Anyone interested in Contena can sign up as a freelance writer by completing a 5-minute survey. Users can also pay for a premium account that connects them with a Contena coach.

For employers:

Posting a job on Contena only takes a few minutes, but will cost you $99.

2. Contently

Contently is a robust content marketing platform that blends the strategic power of AI and the creative power of high-quality freelancers to supply businesses with marketing content. The network includes audio, video, and UI/UX designers as well as writers.

Anyone can register as a Contently freelance writer. No previous experience is required.

Business owners must take a product tour of Contently and sign up for an account before they can use the platform. Companies will be provided with a quote for using the platform at the end of the product tour.

3. WriterAccess

WriterAccess is a robust content platform that allows businesses to plan content, hire and manage freelance writers, and publish the content they create directly to most platforms.

Skyword is a full-service content marketing platform where businesses can get help with content strategy, hire writers and photographers to create the content itself, and use analytics tools to track how successful your content is.

Freelance Writing Gigs is more than a job board; the site also features a massive list of websites that pay writers (we have a list like that as well), an annual list of writing contests, and many articles on the business and craft of freelance writing.

There are two main ways to find jobs on Freelance Writing Gigs: by looking at the job board and by reading the blog where new jobs are posted every weekday. You don’t need to create an account to apply for jobs.

Employers must register with Freelance Writing Gigs and pay $30 for each 30-day ad.

12. All Freelance Writing

All Freelance Writing is a long-running site with a directory of freelance writers and a job board for freelance writing positions.

Anyone can add their information to the writer directory and apply for jobs posted on All Freelance Writing, no account needed. You can also take advantage of their rate calculator and keyword tools.

Employers can post a job for $34.95/30 days. If you need the ad to go on for more than 30 days, you must renew it manually.

13. Working in Content

Working in Content is a job board with positions for content writers, strategists, and marketing professionals. UX writers and technical writers can also find work on this site.

Best Writing is a pretty straightforward job board that features all kinds of content writing jobs, including part-time and full-time employment.

Anyone can apply for jobs on Best Writing for free. You can also sign up to receive daily job alerts for $10/month.

Employers can post a job ad on Best Writing for $100.

15. Problogger

The Problogger job board is a hub for blogging jobs of all kinds, with an emphasis on freelance and contract positions. If you want to make an income by blogging , this is a great place to start.

Anyone can apply for jobs on Problogger. You do not need to create an account.

These are the top sites which are flooded by all kinds of freelancers from around the globe and their popularity means nothing if you can’t earn. I`d rather advice new low competitive freelancing platform for beginners. Beesy.pro and Craigslist are totally free, partimerz has a symbolic charge and all of them are good if you want to work, not only search for it.

Remember one thing while the above mentioned sites, just because a skill has a higher demand or pays well than the others doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best path to follow because there are so many people who are offering $5 services, so you need to really hone your skills to be able to find high paying clients.

Yes agree that Upwork is a top notch site for freelancers and way better than most of the other platforms such as Fiverr where there’s just too much noise. The good thing about using Upwork is that you can choose the Free or Pro Membership options, depending on how often you plan on using the website. Free is upto 60 “Connects”/month, currency you pay to submit proposals to potential clients. For $10, Pro is 70 “Connects” and you get a personalized url, as well as some average insight into how much people are offering to charge on each job, so you can use those plans smartly to make more money through upwork.

Hey Alta, Fiverr is a great place if you know how to approach clients with your gigs and if you’re just starting out, you can find thousands of customers who are interested in your services as Fiverr is one of the biggest online platforms where people find cheap services. That being said, it usually don’t provide you much profits when compared to other sites like UpWork. You can also check out the remaining site mentioned above for finding the freedom to work when you want, from where you want. All the best.

• Managed Content Projects : On these projects, you’ll work with a project manager (an employee of Crowd Content), who will act as a liaison between you and the client.

Fees and commissions : It’s free to sign up, although you’ll only be allowed to bid for projects 6 times per month. If you’d like more bids, you’ll need to pay.

Freelancer.com also takes a commission from both businesses and freelancers. For fixed-fee projects and contests, they charge freelancers 10% or $5.00, whichever is higher, and for hourly projects, they charge 10%.

Experience level : Suitable for beginners and experienced writers, although experienced writers may find it easier to land projects.

Earnings : Varies; dependent on the project and your assigned writer level.

Fees and commissions : iWriter will take a commission ranging from 30%–35%. You’ll get paid 65% of the price of each article that you pitch to a client and 70% of the price if you receive a direct request.

Experience level : Suitable for beginner and experienced writers, although their rates are on the low side for experienced writers.

About the company : Scripted is an online marketplace that connects writers and businesses.

Jobs available : You can get paid to write blog posts, articles, and social media posts on Scripted.

Earnings : Varies from tier to tier and project to project

Fees and commissions : Writers are divided into 4 “tiers” and can move up or down based on performance. Your tier affects how much you’ll get paid.

Writers in lower tiers will also be charged a per-project processing fee (20% for the Bronze tier and 10% for the Silver tier). Higher tiers don’t have to pay this fee.

Experience level : Suitable for beginners and experienced writers, although if you’re new to the freelancing game, it may take you longer to advance to one of the higher tiers.

Signup requirements : You’ll need to provide your LinkedIn profile when you create an account and submit at least one professional writing sample. If you’re approved, Scripted’s staff will contact you on LinkedIn.

12. Textbroker

About the company : Textbroker acts as a bridge between writers and companies looking to buy content.

Jobs available : You can find all sorts of writing jobs on Textbroker.

Earnings : The platform features three types of orders: “DirectOrders,” “TeamOrders,” and “OpenOrders.” Here’s how they work:

• DirectOrder : These are orders that clients submit directly to you. You can set your own rate for these (at a minimum of 2.2 cents per word).
• TeamOrder : On Textbroker, you can (optionally) join “teams” of writers. Teams are dedicated to producing a specific type of content, or content for a particular set of clients. TeamOrders are available to any writer on a given team on a first-come, first-served basis. Rates are set by the client at a minimum of 2.15 cents per word.
• OpenOrder : These are orders that are available to all writers on the platform. You can choose an assignment from the projects available to you based on an externally assigned rating system, which in turn is based on what Textbroker’s editors think about the quality of your writing. You can see the pay scale in the table below.

Payouts are processed twice per week. You must have earned a minimum of $10 to cash out.

Fees and commissions : Free for writers.

Experience level : Suitable for beginners. The earnings listed above are relatively low and you generally shouldn’t take jobs at those rates once you’re an experienced freelancer.

Signup requirements : When you create an account, you’ll be prompted to submit a writing sample. This sample will be evaluated and will determine your initial Order Quality Rating.

About the company : Upwork is one of the largest freelance marketplaces in the world. It connects freelancers in all fields with businesses and individuals seeking talent.

Jobs available : You can find virtually every kind of freelance writing job on Upwork (as well as gigs of other types).

Earnings : Earnings vary from project to project and are set by the clients who use the platform. You’re free to accept or reject jobs based on how much they pay.

Fees and commissions : Freelancers are charged a 10% fee on all their earnings through the platform.

About the company : Valnet is a little different from the rest of the companies on this list. It’s not a freelance writing site and it doesn’t connect you with third-party companies or clients. Instead, it’s a media company that owns several well-known sites, including Screen Rant , TheGamer , and CBR .

Jobs available : When you sign up to write for Valnet, you’ll create content for their own network of sites. Many of the jobs involve writing about pop culture, such as movies, TV, and video games.

Earnings : While none of the jobs that Velnet lists specify their rates, anecdotal sources report that the pay is quite low, at around $0.02 per word.

Valnet sites often pay writers a bonus if their articles reach a certain number of views. This bonus is reportedly between $0.50 to $0.60 per 1000 views, which is also on the low end relative to other pay-per-view sites, such as Medium .

Fees and commissions : As Valnet is essentially a client and not a marketplace or job board, they don’t charge fees or take a commission. However, as mentioned, their rates are fairly low.

Experience level : The level of experience required varies from one position to another, with some ostensibly requiring at least 1 or 2 years of writing experience. That said, given Valnet’s low pay, this might not be a very strict requirement.

For most roles, you’ll need in-depth knowledge of the topic you’re applying to write about, as well as strong time management skills (to meet Valnet’s tight deadlines).

Signup requirements : You’ll need to submit an application that includes your CV or resume, a cover letter, and several writing samples and/or pitches.

People will often mention needing writers in status’ or recruiters might reach out to you if you make your profile specific enough using keywords. Tons of freelance writers like LinkedIn because it also allows you to connect to business owners so you can get your foot in the door for dream clients and industries.

Even though you’re a freelancer, LinkedIn also lets you keep an eye on actual job postings from companies, if you ever decide to submit your resume and find some full-time or part-time work.

Pros of LinkedIn:

• Great for networking and growing your career as a freelancer
• Able to connect with editors at dream publications
• Freelance work of all kinds and in all industries are able to be found on LinkedIn

Cons of LinkedIn:

• Focused more on jobs than specifically freelance work
• Need to spend a bit of time setting up your profile to make it stand out
• LinkedIn lets you create a free account, but there are some advanced paid features if you choose to extend your reach

The good aspect of Upwork is that there are thousands upon thousands of jobs posted at any given time for writers to hunt through. You will need to set your filters so you can find the jobs that are a better fit for you, but there are more jobs there than on almost any other freelancing site.

Now, Upwork does not have the best reputation for freelance writers due to the (often) low rates on jobs.

However, with a little bit of digging and persistence, writers can make a decent rate through Upwork. It might take a while to build your reputation on that site and increase your referrals, but that’s how you can increase your rate through that site.

• It’s free to scroll through their site and apply to the jobs

Constant Content is mostly focused on content for businesses. So, imagine a lot of SEO articles, blog posts, product descriptions, and so on.

They have a variety of writing jobs to choose from, whether you choose to sell articles you write in the marketplace or take on specific gigs for clients, you have a variety of ways to grow with their site.

They have over 100,000 websites that buy content from them, so there are endless opportunities and postings to choose from. According to their website, the top writers make $90,000+ a year (but there’s no details on how much they’re working or how many writers this includes).

• There are clear guidelines with pieces so you’re not writing in the dark

It’s a cliche tip but it’s the truth — networking can be an incredibly effective way to get work as a ghost . More experienced writers can reach out to previous clients who probably know other authors in need of writerly expertise. Another story-based nonfiction magazine, Narratively is an alternative for those who love finding hidden stories in life but would prefer to work on something shorter than an Atavist piece. Narratively asks for unique stories with a clear arc that engages the reader, so some creative writing skills are crucial. They pay around 0.10$ per word, and most articles are within the 2,000-5,000 words range. 

15. Boulevard Magazine 

If you want to write short stories and get paid for it, consider submitting to Boulevard . They’re open to fiction, non-fiction, and poetry submissions from November 1 to May 1, and they pay up to $300 per prose piece and $250 per poem. If you like writing tutorials and have a knack for technology, Tuts + will pay $100 and up for tutorials focuses on technology-related topics such as web design and Flash as well as other topics like photography and writing.

WordPress is one of the most popular site platforms. So if you know how to navigate WP, WPHub will pay $100-$200 for posts about web design trends, coding, and other WordPress-related topics.

37. Digital Ocean

Digital Ocean is an online resource that deals with cloud-related products. They are looking for writers who can create tutorials and guides on technical subjects such as DevOps and CLoud.

They will pay up to $300 per article and $400 for more complex content.

38. Sitepoint

Sitepoint is an online learning resource for web developers. They pay their writers $150-$300 for tutorials, particularly ones on HTML and CSS. You can also use their form to indicate what topics you are interested in and if they need an article they will reach out to you.

Travel and Food

Travel and food are a popular creative writing jobs for new writers. If you travel or love cooking and food, then check out these sites that pay.

39. Great Escape

Great Escape is a site about how to get paid to travel so they are always looking for travel bloggers to share their stories.

They pay $50-$75 per article for their website and $100-$150 for interviews and personal stories!

IWA is all about wine and focuses on accessories and how to store it. Their rate of pay starts at $50 per article. So if you’re all about wine, this could earn you some easy money online!

41. Serious Eats

Serious Eats is a Medium publication that pays $100 for food-related articles about cooking, food, and other eating topics. So if you’re a food blogger, or have a recipe category on your lifestyle blog, this could be a great paid guest-posting opportunity!

Saveur is looking for amazing stories about food and travel and offers a pay rate starting at $150 per article. They accept submissions via email.

43. Cooking Detective

If you’re a food blogger or a lifestyle blogger with a focus on being healthy, you should check out Cooking Detective where you can get paid to write food and cooking content.

They’ll pay $150-$250 for guides and $50-$75 for articles.

44. Horizon Guides

Horizon Guides is a contributor travel site that shares “less ordinary” travel stories. They don’t publish how much they pay but I know they pay up to $200 per contribution . Join their contribution network to get started!

Ah! Did you now you can get paid to write about writing? It’s very meta but there are sites that pay about writing topics. From grammar errors to boosting your vocabulary and more, these sites can help you find credible writing jobs as a writer that writes about writing 🙂

45. Funds for Writers

Funds for Writers pays $50 for original pieces and $15 for reprints and prefer 500-600 words. They look for no “fluff” style writing about earning a living as a writer, so make sure you stick to the point since these are short submissions.

46. RankPay

RankPay is a site that focuses on SEO content marketing and social media. They will pay $50 for guest posts on these topics. If you understand SEO principles and have a blog that performs well, this is a great way to get paid to write.

47. Make a Living Writing

Make a Living Writing is all about helping writers of all kinds, from fiction to blogging to freelance writing and even scriptwriting.

They publish guest posts that help writers make an income and pay $75-$150 per accepted submission.

If you want to get paid for you poetry writing or content about art then Peril is the publication for you. They are an art and culture magazine and the have open calls for submissions.

On their write for us page they say they pay $200 for poetry, visual arts, political pieces and non-fiction works and $300 for longer essays up to 2,000 words.

49. The Barefoot Writer

One way to make easy money online as a freelance writer is to write about freelance writing! The Barefoot Writer is a magazine dedicated to helping freelancers start their businesses and work from home. Depending on the content you submit, the pay can range from $100-$300.

VQR is a literary journal that focuses on excellent writing. They look for unpublished poems, short fiction (up to 8000 words), and nonfiction (up to 9000 words).

The pay rate is $200 per poem and $0.25 per word for prose but book reviews could earn you $500 ! Their submissions aren’t always open, so it’s best to check to see if they are accepting any .

How to Have a Successful Pitching Process

Applying to any of these sites involves sending a pitch .

A writing pitch is an email or message you send to the site’s editor explaining your article idea and how it would be perfect for their publication.

When you write a pitch, you don’t want to go overboard!

Pitches need to be concise and outline your story idea while explaining why they should pay you to write it.

The idea of pitching can be intimidating and don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time – or the first few times.

Once you start pitching for these sites that pay, you’ll get better at selling yourself and your content as a freelance writer.

To get you started, here are some tips for successful pitching :

• Learn about the website. If you’re going to pitch to a site, you need to know who they are and what type of content they are looking for. You can check out their about page, Linkedin profile, and social media accounts.
• Write a compelling subject line. These types of sites probably receive tons of submissions in their inbox so you want to make sure yours stands out! Capitalize keywords and try to highlight your expertise.
• Link to your portfolio. Because you’re not sending a full article, the editor or recipient of the pitch may want to get a sense of your writing style.
• Personalize each pitch. I know there are a ton of pitch templates out there but you don’t want to simply copy and paste generic emails for every site you submit to. Start with a personal greeting and tailor each pitch to the site you are sending it to.

Lastly, you want to send a pitch that showcases your skills and confidence.

Never state that you are a new writer or that you’re new to a certain field. Also, avoid phrases like “I hope” and “I think”.

Go in strong knowing you are the perfect writer to contribute to their site!

Freelance writing can be a lucrative, flexible way to make a living for those with a knack for written communication.

But there’s often a big downside to being a freelance writer: the extra cash it generates doesn’t always hit your account when you need it. In fact, some freelance gigs can take a month or more to pay.

Whether you’re looking to make money writing part-time or full-time, timely payment is a reasonable expectation — and the ability to withdraw your funds on demand can be a valuable perk.

For this post, we combed through dozens of writing sites to find the few that pay daily (or even instantly).

It’s important to note that two of the biggest sites on this list (Upwork and Fiverr) have a “pending” period for your earnings. So while you can withdraw your funds daily, there will be either a seven-day or 14-day lag between when you complete the work and when you can access your money. However, because of the opportunity, it’s worthwhile to consider these in your search. 

Overall, we’ve found that the most effective way to write and get paid daily is through a prearranged agreement with a business. This involves setting clear expectations about the work to be delivered and the payment terms.

Five Writing Sites That Pay Daily

We’ve put together expert-written resources including a list of the best online writing job boards and a comprehensive step-by-step guide to kickstarting your freelance writing career . 

These resources will be tremendously helpful in your journey. However, if your goal is to write and get paid instantly, the landscape looks a bit different. 

While the job boards we recommend are excellent for finding freelance work, they don’t typically offer quick payment terms. If you’re specifically seeking writing sites that provide daily payments, your options may be more limited.

The following sites are well-reviewed by countless writers and offer some of the most flexible payment terms in the industry.

Submission requirements : Varies from project to project.

Upwork is a freelancing marketplace. This means you can search for clients who have posted jobs matching your skills, and then bid on those projects. This allows you to find work that’s suitable for you, whether the job is posted for entry-level writers, writers with SEO experience, writers with a blogging background, or those with social media experience.

Upwork can be competitive, as you’re going up against thousands of other freelancers trying to make a living. But if you’re looking for a legit way to network with clients and build your online writing portfolio, it can be a great place to go.

One of The Ways To Wealth’s writers, Jenni Sisson, is a testament to this. Starting from scratch, she has found significant success as a freelance writer on Upwork , and has built a sustainable career in a short time period, with clients like Business Insider . Her journey serves as an inspiration for those willing to put in the effort and navigate the competitive landscape of freelance writing.

There are a couple of different ways to get paid on Upwork, including hourly and fixed-rate. You cannot get paid daily if you charge by the hour, as your weekly timesheet is finalized on Sunday night and billed to the client in one lump sum. After that, you have to wait an additional five days for the funds to clear.

If you charge fixed rates, your earnings will enter that clearance period as soon as the work is accepted by the client. So if you submit a project on Monday and it’s accepted on Tuesday, you can withdraw your funds on Sunday.

#2. Listverse

Submission requirements : A listicle with at least 10 concepts, with at least a one to two paragraph summary for each item (and you must have a PayPal account).

Listverse is a site filled with viral lists covering topics like entertainment, web design, politics, and everything in between.

Unlike many writing sites, Listverse only asks that submissions be 10 items with one or two paragraphs. Humor is allowed in Listverse articles, and all pieces must be original and written in native-sounding English.

If you have some fun ideas for lists that you feel have the potential to go viral, pitch them using the Listverse submission form .

If your list is accepted, you’ll be paid $100 via your PayPal account. The approval process isn’t always instantaneous, but they do claim to pay quickly, with same-day payment being the norm.

#3. ProBlogger Job Board

Submission requirements : Submit a proposal and cover letter to win a job.

ProBlogger is a highly reputable job board frequented by blogs and freelance writers alike. 

Blogs pay to post their job listings, and freelancers can bid on these jobs at no cost. This platform is especially popular among sites that specialize in SEO content writing, making it an excellent fit for writers with specific subject matter expertise.

Unlike Upwork, ProBlogger doesn’t process payments directly, which allows for flexibility in payment arrangements between you and your client. For example, if you agree to be paid via PayPal within 24 hours of submitting your piece, there’s no delay in receiving your funds.

To position yourself for a “write and get paid instantly” opportunity, consider proposing a unique arrangement to potential clients: in exchange for immediate payment, commit to delivering the article within a very short turnaround time. 

You might want to say something in your proposal like, 

“Given the quick turnaround time I can provide, I propose a payment arrangement where I would deliver the completed article within 24 hours of assignment, and in return, I would appreciate if the payment could be processed immediately upon submission via PayPal. This arrangement ensures you receive your content promptly, and I can maintain a steady workflow. Please let me know if this arrangement works for you, or if you have any other suggestions. I’m open to discussion to find a mutually beneficial agreement.”

For newcomers to the platform without a portfolio, it might be necessary to start with lower bids. However, as you build your reputation and portfolio, you’ll be able to gradually increase your rates. 

Submission requirements : None — you create your own projects.

Unlike Upwork, Fiverr is a freelance marketplace centered around the freelancers rather than the clients. At Fiverr, you create your own service listings, set your prices, and then wait until you get a bite. Once a client has put in an order, you fulfill the order by completing the requested service.

After the client has accepted your work, the funds go into a 14-day clearance period. (It’s only seven days for top-rated freelancers, but you need $20,000 in lifetime revenue to earn that designation.) Once the funds have cleared, you can withdraw them once per day, on demand.

Like Upwork, Fiverr can be competitive. But you get to control the pay rates and services offered. While you may not find work right away, the site can be a potentially powerful way to start your freelance career, build a portfolio, and meet clients.

To get started with Fiverr, create a seller’s profile and start writing out your services offered. From there, you can promote your services on social media and see if you know anyone that has connections with interested parties, or simply wait until clients find you organically via the site’s search engine.

#5. Craigslist

While not traditionally viewed as a job board for freelance writers, Craigslist can serve as one. 

Businesses pay to post their jobs on Craigslist, which provides some quality control, although it may be more relaxed than on platforms like ProBlogger, where posting a job is more expensive. 

That being said, a search for writing gigs on Craigslist can yield some solid opportunities. 

If you aim to get paid instantly, propose an arrangement similar to that suggested for ProBlogger: deliver the article within 24 hours in exchange for immediate payment upon successfully submitting the draft. 

However, remember that some clients may require revisions and withhold payment until they are satisfied with the final product. 

While there are some benefits to searching for local jobs (such as the mystery dining article opportunity above) you can expand your search nationwide on Craigslist by utilizing third-party tools like SearchTempest , which aggregates Craigslist listings from across the country.

Tips on How to Make a Living Writing

Writing can be both a great way to make some quick cash and to develop a long-lasting, lucrative career. Getting started can take time, but there are some things you can do to increase your chances of successfully selling your writing services.

• Focus on quality . Every writing site and potential client is interested in quality content. Whether or not your name will appear in the byline, make sure you’re always putting quality above all else — even if you’re only writing paid comments. Few writing success stories start with a writer who was sloppy or phoning it in.
• Network on LinkedIn . If you’re not on LinkedIn, get set up on the site ASAP. It’s a great place to network with other writers, build a support group, find potential clients, and promote your own skills and services. LinkedIn even offers its own job board, which can be an excellent place to find full-time writing positions.
• Consider blogging . Blogging can be a paying career, but it’s also a cheap way to get some writing experience. Find something you’re interested in, start a WordPress blog about it, and write. Even if it doesn’t turn into a lucrative site, it can help you refine your writing and serve as experience on your resume.
• Look for copywriting work . Even if you’re hoping to make it big with your own content or services, copywriting is an accessible way to break into the field. How to Find Freelance Writing Jobs: 15 Methods to Use Right Now

While there are many factors that distinguish high-earning freelance writers from struggling ones, high-earning freelance writers are ultimately more successful not because they are more qualified or more skilled than struggling ones. Instead, they are more successful because they know how to get freelance writing jobs that pay really well.

And this has little to do with how much a freelance writer is demanding; you could charge a lot and earn a lot, and you could charge little and still struggle to get jobs.

A quick search for “legal writers” on platforms like Upwork brings up profiles of several freelance writers, including the following:

As you can see, the first writer charges up to $200/hour and has billed over $400,000 in freelance work. The second writer, on the other hand, charges a meager $30/hour and has billed just $2,000.

Of course, while there are obviously several factors involved, the point I’m trying to make is that making a good living as a freelance writer is about more than just how much you charge. Competing on price won’t necessarily give you an advantage because there is more than enough money to go around – research shows that the content marketing industry is worth over $300 billion.

In other words, there is a lot of money to go around; you just have to know where to find the better paying jobs.

🤔 How much can you earn doing freelance writing jobs?

The following are the typical rates for freelance writing work according to the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), the most authoritative source on freelancing rates:

According to the EFA, you can expect to earn between $40 and $100 per hour or between 20 cents and $2 per word for freelance writing jobs depending on the nature of the writing. Of course, some freelance writers earn much more, and some earn much less, but this is often determined by a number of key factors such as:

• Your level of experience : Experienced freelance writers will always earn much more than beginner or entry level freelance writers – often by a very significant margin. According to Make a Living Writing’s survey of 1,400+ freelance writers , freelance writing earnings are strongly correlated with level of experience – with experienced freelance writers (2+ years) easily earning double or more what entry level freelance writers (less than one year) are earning for the same jobs. This fact was corroborated by similar research on freelance writer pay from ClearVoice.
• Content type matters : You’ll get paid more for advanced kinds of content such as whitepapers, copywriting, technical writing, and ghostwriting than for much simpler ones such as SEO articles or blog posts. The more difficult it is for other writers to do the kind of writing you’re doing the more you’re likely to earn.
• Specialization and qualification : Most freelance writing jobs do not require you to have any form of qualification and aren’t too specialized. The few that do – such as those in the legal industry or the healthcare industry – often pay significantly more, though. If you have any qualification or experience level that can help with these specialized writing jobs, it will be a good idea to capitalize on it.

I generally charge $0.30 to $0.40 per word (or about $300 to $400 per 1,000 words article), or more depending on the nature of the project. I used to struggle to charge $50 per article, until veteran freelance writer Carol Tice once told me, point blank, during one of our discussions that I was undercharging and asked me to increase my rate. I immediately doubled my rate for new clients and they paid. I did that again for the next ones and they paid as well.

This made me realize a key fact : you’re often worth as much as you’re willing to charge. In a lot of cases, you’re probably undercharging and should just go ahead and increase your rates!

While the above is a non-exhaustive list of different types of freelance writing jobs you can do, the real question is how do you actually get these jobs?

Of course, many people are quick to rush to online job boards and online job platforms . While these are often a good first stop for beginners, relying on just online job platforms isn’t always a good idea.

According to the freelance writer pay survey from Make a Living Writing that I earlier referenced, virtually none of the high-earning freelance writers surveyed use job boards and online platforms like Upwork and content mills. Instead:

• 55% use word of mouth and a strong referral network
• 24% send pitch letters
• 11% receive inbound leads, via online profiles on writer sites, LinkedIn, etc.

So what are the most effective ways to get freelance writing jobs? Below are 15 methods (broken down into three different categories):

• Content marketplaces
• Inbound and outbound marketing methods
• Freelance writing job boards and online writing jobs listings

If you have the required level of experience and some social proof, content marketplaces and job directory websites can be some of the best sources of writing job opportunities for you. Basically, content marketplaces are platforms that facilitate a connection between freelance writers and brands engaging in content marketing .

Many content marketplaces make it easy for freelance writers to earn a decent rate and some even allow writers to earn really well. This is done by publicly advertising these rates on their platforms and carefully vetting clients who use their platform to ensure compliance with these rates.

For example, CloudPeeps publicly advertises $100 to $250 as the rate for blog posts on their rates page and an hourly rate of up to $80 per hour for writers. Scripted publicly advertises an average minimum of 10 cents per word, and these are just two of about seven content marketplaces listed below.

1. CloudPeeps

CloudPeeps is an online marketplace designed for businesses that want to leverage the power of content marketing. Unlike most of the other marketplaces listed below, they aren’t focused just on content as they also facilitate other marketing-related activities (such as social media management, web design, and PR), but they stand out for their effort towards ensuring freelance writers get paid fairly for their work.

Freelance writers can expect to earn between $100 and $250 per post on CloudPeeps, between $30 and $80 per hour, and between $500 and $1,500 per month when they use the platform. Besides the fact that they limit registration to about 23 countries, setting up an account with CloudPeeps and using their platform is a relatively easy process.

2. Scripted

Scripted is another quality content marketplace you should consider signing up for to get freelance writing gigs. Scripted is specifically designed for freelance writers and copywriters, and they are seeking freelance writers who can create blog posts, website copy, email newsletters, and social media posts for brands looking to utilize content marketing.

I also particularly like Scripted because there is no ambiguity about what freelance writers using their platform can earn. They make it clear that their freelance writers earn an average of ten cents or more per word.

3. Contently

Contently is another online content marketplace that freelance writers can rely on to get writing jobs and opportunities.

They connect writers with brands who need help with their content, and jobs available on the platform include blog posts, reported articles, whitepapers, and much more depending on client needs.

Based on official information available from Contently, rates start at $255 for articles (300 – 500 words) and can be as much as $2 per word for whitepapers depending on what vertical you’re writing in. Again, as I’ve earlier said (about becoming specialized to increase earnings potential), specialized niches like finance, enterprise tech, and law pay the most on this platform.

4. ClearVoice

ClearVoice (owned by Fiverr) is another content marketplace that connects freelance writers with brands that need content, presenting you with an opportunity to get writing jobs.

While I couldn’t find official information about rates for ClearVoice writers, third-party information shows that they generally pay between $250 – $400 or more for articles.

Quietly also connects freelance writers with brands and agencies in need of quality content, and boasts having brands that include Adobe, Dell, Slack, and Unbounce as clients.

You can sign up with this platform to increase your chances of getting paid writing jobs.

Finally, on the list of online content marketplaces you should consider joining to increase your chances of getting freelance jobs as a writer is Copify. Depending on what part of the world you’re located in, you’ll be redirected to the relevant site and given an opportunity to join their platform.

While there is no official source for information on rates for freelance writers, third-party research shows that Copify pays a lot less than most of the platforms on this list. You can expect to earn up to $50 per article with this platform, however.

7. Set up a writer website

One of the most basic things you can, and should, do to position yourself to start getting freelance writing jobs is to set up a writer website.

If done right, a website serves as your online shop/location where potential clients can easily find you, shows that you are a freelance writer who knows what he/she is doing, helps you highlight your services and relevant social proof, and allows you to give potential clients an option to get in touch with you.

There are several ways in which your writer website can help you attract freelance work:

• Through people discovering it via the search engines and reaching out to you.
• Through people discovering it via referrals and reaching out to you.
• By linking to it in guest posts and your outreach efforts.
• By using ads to drive traffic to it.

🤺 An about page that gives necessary personal and professional information about you in a clear and descriptive way; it should contain a personal picture, your background information, your experience and qualifications, and how you plan to help your clients.

💼 A services page that lists and clearly describes your services and how they can help potential clients.

✍️ A portfolio page that lists relevant examples of work you’ve done before to give potential clients an idea of what you can do for them.

☎️ A contact page that makes it easy to get in touch with you.

Once all of the above are in place, you also want to make sure to highlight important testimonials and social proof on key pages of your website; this includes on your homepage, on your about page, and on your services page.

8. Cold pitch potential clients

Cold pitching is my all-time favorite method for getting freelance writing jobs. I’m particularly in love with cold pitching for the following reasons:

• Anybody can do it . You can send cold pitches and get your services in front of potential clients regardless of your freelance writing experience or how authoritative your website is.
• You get results really fast . While some methods of getting clients (like blogging) can take months, cold pitching can yield results super fast. In fact, during a cold pitching campaign I once closed a freelance writing deal worth $625 in just two hours.
• It is scalable ; during my most recent cold pitching campaign I closed deals worth five figures with minimal effort. If I wanted to, and if I had the ability to do the work, I could close deals worth six figures in months. To achieve this same result through blogging, investing in ads, or other means will require a much greater deal of effort and resources.

With the above benefits outlined, how then do you go about cold pitching effectively. There are a few key things to put in place:

• Set up your website and online presence : When you send cold pitches to potential clients, you should realize that you are a stranger to practically all of the people you’re cold pitching. You’ve had no interactions with them before and they probably haven’t heard about you. So guess what they do first when they see your email? If it isn’t trite enough to be ignored, they do a background check on you by searching for your name on Google. If they find a website and an established online presence you’ll be at an advantage.
• Ensure your cold pitches are sent from your professional email address : While many freelance writers looking for job opportunities send cold pitches using free email addresses like Gmail and Yahoo Mail, this is something I strongly advocate against for a key reason: spammers abuse free emails a lot, and as a result most people ignore them or even have filters against them. A professional email address associated with your website (e.g. yourname[AT]yourwebsite.com ) stands out on the other hand and ensures you’re more likely to be taken seriously.
• Keep your cold pitch simple and to the point : Remember, you’re a stranger in this person’s inbox so he/she doesn’t have the time to read an epistle from you. Assume that you’ve wasted the opportunity you have if a prospect needs to spend more than a minute to read your cold email. All the better if you can keep it under 30 seconds.
• Do your homework : Take a few minutes to do your work. Know the name of the person you’re cold pitching and the name of the person at the organization you’re pitching, then ensure you address the person by name.
• Specify what you can do in the email : Mention what service you’re offering and how it can help the person reading the email. Don’t ask the recipient of your message to click a link to read more about your services. That’s a mistake. Most people won’t click a link in an email from a stranger.
• Highlight social proof you have in your email : If there’s anything significant you’ve done with your writing, be sure to highlight it in your email. This includes having a popular blog, having been featured in popular publications, having won an award, having published a book, and or having helped clients achieve certain key results with your writing.
• Be ready to follow up : You’ll often have to follow up a few times before getting a response to some of your cold pitches. It is important to also learn how to craft a good follow up email.

To give you an idea of what a good cold pitch looks like, below is the screenshot of the exact cold pitch that I used to close a writing deal worth $625 in two hours (which eventually led to five figures from the same client over time):

9. Optimize your LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is undoubtedly the biggest social network for professionals and, if used the right way, it can serve as a great platform to promote your freelance writing services.

I’ve had many potential clients (like the one below) reach out to me with freelance writing opportunities on LinkedIn:

There are several ways to use LinkedIn to get freelance writing jobs. Below are some tips to help you maximize the platform:

• Use a clear and professional headshot.
• Make sure your LinkedIn profile clearly highlights your experience and organizations you’ve worked.
• Make sure relevant terms and keywords are present in your profile to ensure your profile comes up when people search for these terms. Examples: “b2b freelance writer,” “Seattle freelance writer,” etc.
• Ensure your LinkedIn profile highlights your portfolio and strong pieces of content you’ve helped create.

The following screenshot, of freelance writer Elna Cain’s LinkedIn profile , is a good example of a well-optimized LinkedIn profile. Besides using a clear and professional headshot, it is clearly descriptive and uses relevant keywords that make it easy for potential clients to discover Cain when using the LinkedIn search feature.

10. Tap Into Quora’s increasing popularity with decision makers

While many are familiar with Quora as a leading question and answer website where you can get insights on pretty much any topic, very few realize that Quora can also serve as a good source of freelance writing jobs.

With over 300 million monthly users , 54 percent of whom report an annual household income of more than $100,000, and 37 percent of whom are likely to be in management positions, there is an abundance of writing job opportunities on Quora – if you know how to use it.

Below is a response to a particular Quora thread that was made by a freelance writer looking for jobs:

There are a few key steps to get freelance writing jobs on Quora:

• Make sure your Quora profile is properly set up. The same rule always applies: use a professional headshot and clear profile description with relevant keywords and that highlights your expertise.
• Ensure you are highly active on Quora, particularly in sections related to your niche and the services you offer; for example, you should be active where content and writing as related to your industry is being discussed.
• You should regularly contribute relevant and in-depth articles to questions relevant to your industry and, if possible, highlight the fact that you are a freelance writer for hire (directly or indirectly).

11. Use SEO to build a long-term stream of clients

SEO is something I strongly believe every freelance writer should know and take advantage of; besides the fact that a lot of potential clients expect you to have at least a basic knowledge of SEO , it can also help you rank your website for relevant keywords that potential clients are searching for.

SEO can help you get freelance writing opportunities directly and indirectly. Here’s how you can use both the direct and indirect approach to SEO to get writing jobs:

This approach aims to rank your freelance writer website for relevant freelance writer terms so that when clients search for these terms they come across your website.

For example, your website could be optimized for the term “b2b freelance writer,” or “Whitepaper writer,” or “Maryland freelance writer.” You then focus on gradually building relevant backlinks and creating relevant content aimed at helping your website get to the top results where you become the first website that potential clients see when they search for those terms.

The advantage to this approach is that, if done right and your website starts ranking well, you will keep getting client inquiries and new clients for months and years for as long as you maintain your rankings. The disadvantage is that, depending on how competitive the term is, you stop getting new freelance writing inquiries as soon as your rankings begin to drop.

I once published an ultimate guide to guest blogging, built some quality backlinks to it, and watched it slowly climb up in the search engines until it was on page one for several guest blogging related terms. During this period, I kept getting a lot of inquiries from people who wanted me to do both guest blogging and other freelance writing work for them.

This is just one piece of content that has brought in a great deal of freelance writing work for me; I have others, too.

These pieces of content rely on the indirect SEO approach to getting clients; where you create a solid piece of content that promotes your freelance writing services and then try to get that content to rank well in search engines.

If you have a blog, or a freelance writer website, then it might be a good idea to publish a few of these in-depth guides and resources, optimize them to lead clients to your services page, and promote them with link building efforts such as guest blogging and outreach. Over time, these articles will start to rank for relevant keywords and result in potential clients who are interested in your services reaching out to you.

12. Start guest blogging the smart way

Guest blogging is one of my favorite methods for getting freelance writing jobs and it has been responsible for six figures in freelance writing income for me over the years.

There are two ways you can use guest blogging to get freelance writing jobs:

The aim of this approach is to get potential clients to reach out to you directly as a result of your guest post. Often, this is done by writing a solid and relevant guest post on a highly authoritative publication and including a link to your services in your guest post bio.

Here’s an example bio from a guest post on Problogger:

As you can see, the bio clearly shows that the author of the guest post is a professional guest blogger and links to a page where the author can be hired.

When using the direct approach to guest blogging, there are a few things you should focus on:

• Select a highly authoritative blog that has a lot of traffic ; since you are hoping that people will reach out to you after reading your guest post it is important that people read it. You don’t want to guest blog on a publication that has no readers.
• Ensure that the publication you are writing for has your target audience and that your guest post is highly relevant to both your target audience and the services you’re offering.
• Ensure your guest post bio clearly shows that you are a freelance writer that can be hired (as demonstrated in the above example with the Problogger guest blogger).

Indirectly :

Another way to get freelance writing jobs by guest blogging is through the indirect approach. The focus of this approach is on using guest blogging as a means to build relevant links to your writer website or other pages on your website.

When you use this approach, the links in your guest posts can be contextual (relevant and in-content) or in your bio. There are a few ways you can go about it:

• Ensure your guest posts are relevant to your website/services/page you desire to link to, or that there is a section of your guest post that is relevant, and then link to this page in that relevant section.
• You can link directly to your homepage, especially if you’re trying to rank for key terms that potential clients are looking for e.g. “b2b content writer,” “Seattle freelance writer,” etc.
• You can also link to key content on your website that is designed to qualify potential clients and get them to reach out to you. This could be an ultimate guide, a case study, or some other relevant piece of content aimed at directing people to your freelance writing services.

Both of the above approaches can be used with great success to get freelance writing jobs, and both have been responsible for generating six figures in freelance writing income for me over the years.

13. Pitch new services to existing clients

Oftentimes our focus is on getting new clients when trying to get freelance writing jobs. We seldom think about our existing clients as a source of new jobs and lose out on a lot of income in the process.

In my experience over the years, it is a lot easier to get high-paying freelance writing gigs by focusing on existing clients instead of new ones. These clients know you and have a feel for what you can do, so you don’t have to do much to convince them to give you work.

Earlier on in this article, I had listed 20+ different services you can offer to potential clients; if you’re offering just one or two of these services to a client, then you have an opportunity to earn a lot more – by offering additional services to the same client. Doing this has easily added six figures to my bottom line over the years.

I initially realized the power of offering additional service to existing clients when a client in the CPA education niche that I had been working on guest posts for asked me if I can write landing page content for their website.

I accepted the offer and would eventually earn five figures just creating landing page content for this client within a few short months; earning significantly more than I was earning doing what I was initially hired for. I kept thinking about how I could have lost this opportunity due to thinking I only had to work on what I was initially hired to do.

Ever since, I’ve relied on pitching existing clients with new services to get more jobs and increase my earnings.

For example, one of my major clients is a leading comparison site in the web hosting niche; while the client initially hired me to help with ghostwriting guest posts, I noticed they kept publishing new content on their blog that I didn’t help create. I simply pitched them my blog content services, was commissioned to write about 27 reviews for five figures and have since been given other writing-related projects (including a tutorial-style blog post for mid four figures). This is despite the fact that this wasn’t what I was initially hired to do.

14. Take advantage of website flipping marketplaces like Flippa

You’ve probably heard of Flippa before.

If not, it is the leading online marketplace for buying and selling websites. While you sometimes see sites being sold for low and mid five figures, a good portion of websites on Flippa are sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions.

So what does buying and selling websites on Flippa have to do with getting freelance writing jobs? A lot. Majority of the people buying and selling websites on these platforms often do so as a business model; they buy an authoritative website, update it with lots of quality content, build more links to it, and sell it for multiples of what they bought it for.

Or, in some instances, they build up websites from scratch, update it with relevant content and build backlinks to it and then sell it for five or six figures.

In both of these instances, you can come in by positioning yourself as the freelance writer who helps them with the content they publish on these websites.

Here’s an example:

Take a look at the above Flippa ad and a few facts instantly stand out:

• $17.6k monthly profit
• 16k email subscribers
• 283.4k monthly unique visits
• More importantly: a content site

The above Flippa listing is an ad for a site looking for a buyer; when you look at the nature of the site and the business model, there is clearly a need for a writer for this site. There are many more ads like this on Flippa and related websites, and they present an opportunity for you.

Simply visit the Flippa category relevant to your niche, identify sites that might need the kind of content you create, and pitch your services to BOTH buyers and sellers of websites in these categories.

⚡ Pro tip: Finally, you can also get freelance writing jobs by taking advantage of freelance job boards and listings of paid writing jobs.
