The cover letter serves as an introduction to your application package and answers the following questions: Who are you? When will you defend your dissertation (if you’re currently ABD)? Why are you interested in applying for this assistant professor position? Why are you interested in this institution? What is your dissertation research about? What are your future research plans? What kind of teaching experience do you have? How will you contribute to our department and institution? Why is the school a good fit for you and vice versa? A strong cover letter will be tailored to the institution to which you’re applying. For the humanities and social sciences it is typically 2–3 pages long, and for STEM fields 1–2 pages, but this may vary depending on your specific discipline.

The Purpose of a Cover Letter

Sometimes called a “ letter of intent ” or “ letter of interest ,” a cover letter is an introduction to the rest of your job application materials. The purpose of a cover letter is to quickly summarize why you are applying to an organization or for a particular position, and what skills and knowledge you bring that make you the most suitable candidate for that position. The cover letter is often the first impression that a prospective employer will have of you, especially if they do not know you or have not heard about you from their network of contacts. First impressions count, and so getting your cover letter right is a critical step in your job application process. Like all your job application materials, it may take time and focus to write your cover letters well. You will likely have several drafts before you come up with a final version that clearly articulates your skills and your understanding of the employer and the job requirements.

While your CV briefly states your skills, knowledge, experience, and (most importantly) what you have achieved using your abilities, the cover letter gives you an opportunity to create a narrative that shows the path you have taken in your career or education, emphasizing the skills you’ve used along the way, and explaining why the position you are applying to is the next desirable step on this path.

Timeline: Getting Started with Your Cover Letter

Step 1: The first step to writing a good cover letter is to have a good CV. Your cover letter expands upon some of the information you include within these documents and describes the role you have played in achieving your academic goals (i.e., showing how your experiences have made you the best candidate for the position).

Step 2: The next step is to find an open position that interests you. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all cover letter, as each should be tailored to each job you apply to, but there will certainly be parts of the letter that will stay much the same and be appropriate for multiple jobs. A 1-3 page cover letter might be the norm when applying for a tenure-track faculty position, but you need to check with your own department to find out what the standards are in your field.

Step 3: Go through the job ad and carefully note all of the requirements and skills the employer is looking for. Based on your background research of the employer and the people you have spoken to who know about this employer (whether a business or a university department), try to identify the two or three most important skills that the employer is looking for. You should then try to create a cover letter that illustrates that you have these skills and have used them effectively.

When applying for faculty positions, you will be expected to spend some time in your cover letter talking about your past research experiences and future research goals as well as your teaching—even though you may have covered these in more detail in your research statement and teaching philosophy documents. How much time you need to spend talking about teaching and research will depend on the nature of the position and your field of study. For some humanities and social sciences applications, you will not be asked for a separate research statement, and this information will need to be integrated into the cover letter. Cover letters for scientific positions will generally be shorter, as more (but not all) of the information about research will be covered in the research statement.

Keep in mind that academic letters also need to cover everything that non-academic cover letters address. You need to show that you are not only a good academic, but that you are a good person to work with who is committed to making meaningful contributions at that particular institution. Make sure that you address the requirements of the position as stated in the job ad. Speak to faculty in your department to get a sense of what is expected in cover letters in your discipline. See if any faculty you know have been involved in search committees, and find out what they looked for in cover letters.

Targeted retention incentive payments for school teachers

Eligible chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics teachers can apply for targeted retention incentive payments between October and March.

Applications are currently closed

You can no longer claim for the academic year 2023 to 2024. You’ll be able to claim for the academic year 2024 to 2025 from October. You must claim by 31 March 2025.

The targeted retention incentive payment ranges from £3,000 to £6,000, from the 2024 to 2025 academic year, depending on the school you teach in.

You can apply from October in the 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026 academic years.

Eligible teachers of the following subjects can claim a targeted retention incentive payment for teaching in eligible state-funded secondary schools:

  • mathematics

When to apply

Use the table to find out when you can apply for a targeted retention incentive payment. If you are a postgraduate, use the academic year your initial teacher training ( ITT ) course started. If you’re an undergraduate, use the academic year your ITT course finished.

The academic year normally runs from 1 September to 31 August. Some ITT courses may start slightly earlier, such as from 1 June, but should be treated as starting in the following academic year. Applications open in October of the year shown.

You will not be able to make a claim for a specific year once the application window for that year has closed.

Eligibility criteria

You must meet the eligibility criteria to be able to claim any additional payments.

From October 2024 to March 2025, you’ll be able to answer some questions to find out what additional payments you’re eligible to claim.

You’ll only be able to claim either an early-career payment or targeted retention incentive payment per academic year, even if you’re eligible to claim for both payments.

School eligibility and payment amount

Targeted retention incentive payments are offered to teachers in schools identified as having a high need for teachers. If you teach in an eligible school in an education investment area, you’ll receive a higher payment.

Qualifications

To claim, you must have completed at least one of the following:

  • an ITT course specialising in mathematics, physics, chemistry or computing
  • a UK undergraduate or postgraduate degree related to mathematics, physics, chemistry or computing on the JACS 3.0 principal subject codes or with a relevant higher education classification of subjects (HECoS) code ( ODS , 9.25 KB )
  • an equivalent non-UK degree

If you were awarded qualified teacher status ( QTS ) through assessment only or overseas recognition in an eligible academic year, you’ll be eligible if you completed one of these qualifications.

QTS and QTLS

You must have either:

  • qualified teacher status ( QTS )
  • qualified teacher learning and skills ( QTLS ) status and membership of the Society for Education and Training

You must be employed as a teacher in a state-funded secondary school (or middle-deemed secondary school) in England when you apply for the payment. State-funded schools include:

  • local-authority-maintained secondary schools
  • academies, free schools or multi-academy trusts
  • local-authority-maintained or non-maintained special schools

You must have spent at least 50% of your contracted hours allocated to teaching one or more of the eligible subjects at the time of the application.

Supply, independent school and sixth-form college teachers

If you’re a supply teacher, you must:

  • be employed directly by the school
  • have been working for at least one term before applying

If you’re employed by a private supply-teaching agency or teach in an independent school, you’re not eligible.

Part-time teachers

If you’re a part-time teacher, you’re eligible for the same targeted retention incentive payment amount as a full-time teacher.

You still need to meet all the eligibility criteria.

Breaks in teaching

You’re still eligible if you have some breaks in your normal employment such as:

  • maternity, paternity, parental or adoption leave

You should apply for payments as usual during these breaks before the claim window closes each year.

Performance

You must not currently be subject to any:

  • formal performance measures as a result of continuous poor teaching standards
  • disciplinary action

We make the payment in one lump sum.

If you’re eligible for both the targeted retention incentive and early-career payments, you can only claim one of these additional payments in the same academic year.

However, if you’re eligible to  claim back your student loan repayments , you’ll be able to claim these as well as a targeted retention incentive payment or an early-career payment.

Taxable income and National Insurance

We’ll pay National Insurance and basic rate Income Tax for the payment on your behalf. If you are or become a higher-rate taxpayer, you’ll need to pay any Income Tax at the higher rate through PAYE.

The payment is not part of your salary from your employer. You, your employer or the government will not make a contribution to your pension as part of this payment.

Your payment, along with the Income Tax and National Insurance contributions paid on your behalf, will all count towards your income. You should consider how this will affect any other benefits or tax credits.

Student loan deductions

If you have a student loan you’re currently paying off, a deduction will go towards repaying it. This is automatically taken from your payment.

What are the Writing Sample requirements, should it be on any specific topics?

The Writing Sample is required to be 3pg minimum – 4pg maximum, not including citations in APA format with Times New Roman font. The topic or subject of your Writing Sample is of your choice.

How much will I get paid as the Human Resources Fellow?

The Human Resource Fellow will be paid at the minimum rate of the Administrative Officer grade 103. He/she will be paid $2,437.50 twice monthly for the duration of the program.

What if I obtain my Master’s degree in Human Resources Management, Human Resources Management and Labor Relations, Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, or related field more than 12 months prior to the program’s start date?

Only applicants who have successfully completed their Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Human Resources Management or Labor Relations, Industrial/Organizational Psychology less than 12 months prior to the program’s start date (July 5th, 2023) are eligible to apply.

I expect to obtain my Master’s degree after the program start date, can I still apply?

Candidates should have completed their Master’s Degree before the program's start date (July 5th, 2023). Individuals who will obtain their degree after the program's start date should apply for the next year’s Human Resource Fellowship.

Where will the fellowship take place? Where is the College of Physicians & Surgeons?

The Human Resources Fellowship Program is part of the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University Medical Center. Although Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital are affiliated they are two separate organizations. The Human Resource Fellow’s involvement will take place within the Office of Vice Dean of Administration.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons is located at the Columbia University Medical Center Campus, at 630 West 168th Street New York, NY 10032.

Are international applicants eligible for consideration?

The College of Physicians & Surgeons will consider complete applications from all qualified applicants. If you are an international applicant, please be aware that it will be your responsibility to complete all required documentation for an international visa if selected for the Fellowship position. Although we are not able to sponsor an employment visa for the fellowship position, candidates who have OPT (Optional Practical Training) are eligible to apply.

What is the work day/week schedule like for the fellowship?

The standard schedule for the Human Resources Fellow is 35 hours a week, Monday- Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm.

The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Special Education Assistant Principal to lead the students, staff, parents, and community at Marlton School towards a continuous cycle of improvement and academic achievement. Marlton School is a traditional calendar school located in the hills of the historic Leimert Park. The school serves students who are Deaf (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) from 3-22 years of age. In addition, Marlton provides a general education program for Grades K-6. The combined enrollment is approximately 150 students with 92% receiving free and reduces lunch and 38% of English Learners. The school is located at 4000 Santo Tomas Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90008. The Ideal Candidate will: have knowledge of methodologies required for serving deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) learners as well as multi-lingual education of general education students and a strong commitment to improve literacy for DHH students; experience in building capacity of adult learners through professional development with the goal of effective Common Core State Standards across content areas; has strong knowledge of special education policy and procedures and systems to maintain compliance with state and federal laws regarding students with disabilities; has working knowledge of the magnet school system with an emphasis on increasing student enrollment; strong ability to create a culture of collaboration with all stakeholders in order to address instructional and operational needs of the school; strong instructional leadership in meeting WASC requirements, and be proficient with American Sign Language or agree to enroll in a training program to ensure proficiency within one year.

For years, she had been losing hair and weight. She had started forgetting whole days, and sometimes appeared to be in dreamlike trances. Her children and friends worried she had Alzheimer’s.

But in late 2020, after she was summoned to a police station in southern France, she learned a far more shattering story.

Her husband of 50 years, Dominique Pelicot, had been crushing sleeping pills into her food and drink to put her into a deep sleep, the police said, and then raping her. He had ushered dozens of men into her home to film them raping her, too, they said, in abuse that lasted nearly a decade.

Using the man’s photographs, videos and online messages, the police spent the next two years identifying and charging those other suspects.

On Monday, 51 men, including Mr. Pelicot, went on trial in Avignon, in a case that has shocked France and cast a spotlight on the use of drugs to commit sexual abuse and the broader culture in which such crimes could occur.

The accused men represent a kaleidoscope of working-class and middle-class French society: truck drivers, soldiers, carpenters and trade workers, a prison guard, a nurse, an I.T. expert working for a bank, a local journalist. They range in age from 26 to 74. Many have children and are in relationships.
