Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET)

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) offers you an introduction to teaching in further education . 

The qualification covers: 

• Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training;
• Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education;
• Understanding assessment in education and training.

AET Teaching Requirement

This AET is a knowledge-based qualification. You do not have to fulfil any no minimum teaching practice requirement to gain the award. So, you can take the AET if you are not in a teaching role. 

However, you do have to part in one hour of peer teaching as part of the Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training (Level 3) unit. These microteaching sessions involve planning at least one 15-minute observed and assessed lesson for a group. We usually use a peer group of other learners. After delivering the teaching, you review the session and respond to feedback from the observer and the ‘learners’. You can deliver additional sessions to meet the additional required 45 minutes of microteaching. Alternatively, you can observe the microteaching of other trainee teachers.  

Of course, if you are a trainee teacher already in a teaching role, you may be able to use your usual workplace teaching for the micro-teaching requirement.

Level 3 Award Progression

The Level 3 AET qualification is not a prerequisite to you joining a Level 4 CET or a Level 5 DET. The suite of education and training courses is not primarily a progression path to full qualification. 

Award in Education and Training Employment

The level 3 award in education and training offers you limited opportunities for employment. However, the award will provide you with an informed basis for deciding whether or not to take further qualifications and pursue a career in further education.

The Level 3 AET is an introductory generic teaching qualification. However, if you decide to take the Level 4 CET after the Level 3 AET there is no credit transfer between the qualifications. 

No credit from the Level 3 Award is transferable to the Level 5 DET.

The AET qualification was previously known as the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). In 2013, the PTLLS course changed to the Level 3 Award in Education and Training ( AET ). It is for those who want to work as tutors/teachers in the further education sector.

The AET qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective teaching. Whether you’re entering the education sector for the first time, or looking to enhance your existing teaching skills; the AET qualification provides a solid start.

This qualification covers key areas such as:

• understanding teaching roles, responsibilities, and relationships;
• planning and delivering effective lessons;

Choosing the Right AET Training Course

With the Education and Training course, you must achieve ’12 credits’. The 12 credits break down to:

• 3 credits from Unit 1, the mandatory unit.
• 9 credits from the further optional units.

So whilst every training provider will offer Unit 1 as part of their AET course, the following units will differ to make 12 credits.

At Brooks and Kirk, our AET course is packaged as Unit 1, 4 and 5. We chose these units because the others come from the ‘Learning and Development suite’. Learners who undertake the Learning and Development suite’s units are “required to provide evidence from their or work-based practice in order to meet the criteria”. Consequently, this isn’t always convenient for our learners. So, it’s not something you will have to worry about when taking your AET training course with Brooks and Kirk.

What’s involved.

With Brooks and Kirk, the AET qualification is split into three small units. As mentioned before, this includes the mandatory unit and 2 optional units.

Unit 1 – Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training

The knowledge based unit, exploring the roles and responsibilities as a teacher.

Unit 4 – Facilitate Learning and Development in Groups

This is where you will deliver a practical lesson via zoom, amongst your trainee-tutor peers.

Unit 5 – Understanding Assessment in Education and Training

Your final unit focuses on enhancing your understanding of assessment methods and techniques in educational settings.

What are the entry requirements?

At Brooks and Kirk you must be 18 years old or over to enrol on our AET course . For your own benefit, it is preferred that you hold a certain level of English proficiency. This is because the course involves written assignments and communication skills. Likewise, there is also a strong recommendation for learners to have a relevant subject knowledge or experience in the field they intend to teach.

Of course, as AET is an online course, a desktop PC/laptop is required to complete your coursework.

AET Online VS In-Person

Deciding between an AET course online or in-person depends on your learning style and preferences. Online courses offer you the flexibility to study from anywhere and at your own pace. They suit individuals with busy schedules or those who prefer self-directed learning.

In-person courses offer a more ‘structured’ learning environment. Whether suits you positively or negatively depends on your preferences. However, in the modern world, individuals often prefer the flexibility of online courses. The main consideration is the quality of the education you will receive. How Much Are AET Training Courses?

The AET course will cost you £295 in full. We also offer an instalments option. You can pay a £50 deposit, and then spread remaining cost across a maximum of 12 equal monthly payments. This totals £395.

How Long Does an AET Qualification Take to Complete?

Generally, learners take around 3-4 months to complete our AET qualifications. However, we have a flexible learning system in place, so you can take up to 2 years if needed. As you can complete the AET course online, all of your coursework can be done at your own leisure. You have 48 Guided Learning Hours and the Total Qualification Time is 120 hours. Therefore keep that in mind when planning how long you intend to take.

Level 3 and Beyond

Upon completing your AET course online, you open up a world of educational opportunities . You have the opportunity to to pair your AET course online with Brooks and Kirk’s assessor course; the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement . By obtaining the AET qualification, you can teach in your sector; with the CAVA qualification, you can assess in your sector. These qualifications go perfectly hand-in-hand. What Is PTLLS?

This training course will start off by enlightening you on the role, responsibilities and duties of a teacher. Entry Requirement

• Learners must be 19 or over, and should have a basic understanding of the English Language, numeracy, literacy and ICT.

In order to qualify for the program  (Awarding Body Registration) you will need to make the payment of £60 (Inc. VAT) and submit a completed application form which will be provided to you. This form should be provided to us within a month of enrolment along with the following;

• Proof of educational qualifications
• You will need to provide a copy of an identification document, such as a passport or driving licence.

Method of Assessment:

Learners must complete:

• Three written assignments
• One micro teaching session (which can be submitted as a recorded video)

All assignments should be submitted via the online portal within four months of the course start.

Additionally, £100 (Inc. VAT) is charged for your assessment and certificate. You need to pay this when you are submitting your assessments only (It is not required to pay initially when you are registering). This payment can be paid in installments when you are submitting your assessments.

I have just completed my course online and can say I was very satisfied with the level of support received from ‘Maggie’ via e mail regarding the completion of assignments and extensions that I asked for. Having 2 jobs during the covid19 pandemic meant at times it was tricky to get assignments completed….I do however wonder if there are several ‘Maggies’ ?! Unless its just an auto sign off and maybe you are not all called Maggie! None the less, all have been great. An easy to follow course with the online modules, examples of assignments and guidance.

A couple of things that I think could be improved are the instructor led powerpoint videos to watch ( Bit dated ) and maybe some more reference to online learning? I was lucky enough to be able to conduct my microteach in a classroom which did feel easier ( I do however appreciate its a fairly new concept and was appropriate for students who due to COVID19, couldn’t microteach in a classroom ) Maybe there could be guidance for doing it online?

All in all really pleased with 1Training for this course. After a bit of time off from learning I will consider doing another course.

Being able to complete this course at my own pace over a 12 month period was very useful. I did not have to travel to any training centres and complete everything from the comfort of my home. My microteach was being planned for February/March 2020, right when the COVID pandemic hit the nation. I therefore had to pause delivering this until much father into my 365 day limit than I would have liked. I am grateful the training company allowed me to complete the microteach using a video call platform, as this has allowed me to complete the course within the timeframe and not have to start over when face to face training could be delivered.

I hope the work I have done results in a pass of this course so I can utilise it and start to deliver training for my clients.

About this TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training Course

Study for the TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training to gain a nationally recognised teaching qualification and begin your career in education. This qualification, formally known as the PTLLS course, prepares you to enter the teaching profession and work within education. Upon completion, students are able to begin working in Further Education and the Skills Sector and the course is designed for anyone – even those with no previous experience in teaching.

The course is studied completely online but with some practical elements. These practical elements are recorded and then sent in to your tutor so a job in education is not necessary to complete the course.

Qualification

To gain the full TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training certification you will need to submit and pass all of the tutor marked assignments and practical assessments. There are 3 written assignments in the course and then a requirement to undertake a microteach session as well as carry out reviews on videos of other teachers. Assessments

To pass this course learners must pass 4 written assignments, a microteach and then 2 reviews of other teachers (videos are provided for these). These are completed after navigating through the corresponding lessons and writing your answers to assignment questions. Once these have been read and marked by your personal tutor, feedback and marks are provided to students which contain helpful tips to improve work in future assignments.

The TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training course assesses the following units:

Unit 1 – Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

In this unit, you will learn what it means in practice to work as a teacher in an education or training setting. The unit is divided into three parts.

The first part examines the roles and responsibilities of a teacher. It includes information about the minimum professional standards all teachers should meet and describes the day-to-day activities teachers do. It also provides an overview of legislation and codes of practice that impact how teachers do their jobs, for example the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (2006).

The second part of the unit discusses ways in which teachers establish and maintain safe and supportive learning environments. You will find out how to identify and meet your learners’ needs, how to promote equality and diversity in the classroom, and how to encourage appropriate behaviour among your learners.

Finally, the third part of the unit looks at the relationships between teachers and other professionals working in education and training settings, for example learning support staff or administrators. You will also learn about professional boundaries and how to refer learners to external services such as health centres and libraries.

Unit 2 – Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

In this unit, you will learn what it means to use inclusive approaches in education and training settings. You will be introduced to both theory and practice, then asked to demonstrate your understanding of inclusive approaches by ‘microteaching’ in a real classroom.

The first part of this unit will set out what is meant by inclusive approaches, and consider what kinds of classroom activity might be more or less inclusive and why.

Next we will move on to discuss ways that teachers create an inclusive classroom in practice, for example the techniques they use to engage learners in their lessons and how they establish rules that everyone can respect.

The final parts of the unit are designed to support you with your microteaching session, which will last up to one hour. Although this can be an intimidating element of the Level 3 course for new practitioners, remember the best way to learn to teach is by teaching!

Unit 3 – Understanding assessment in education and training

In this unit, you will find out more about assessment in education and training. Most courses include some element of assessment, whether formal (like an exam leading to certification) or informal (like teachers asking questions to see what learners have understood). Assessment allows both learners and teachers to see progress, strengths and areas for improvement.

This unit will provide an overview of the types and assessment methods commonly used in education and training settings, their relative merits, and how they can be adapted to meet individual learners’ needs.

The second part of the unit looks at ways that teachers can involve students in the assessment process, for example by encouraging them to set their own learning goals or taking part in peer assessment. Finally we will examine the role and use of constructive feedback in assessment.

Giving constructive feedback is a skill that must be learned, as it can be tricky to identify genuinely helpful action points and communicate these in a way that motivates rather than undermines the student.

Regardless of your role, whether an employer, teacher, teacher trainer, or an employer. There is legislation that affects your role. Let’s start with the Health and Safety at Work Act. Basically, all employers, employees, subcontractors and any third parties have a responsibility to ensure everyone is safe. This should start in the classroom so maybe you are on the Level 3 Award in Education and Training or simply a site manager providing induction training for your team.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training Policies and Procedures

You need to ensure that you have the correct policies in place, you have conducted risk assessments to whom can be harmed or injured and put in effective control measures to ensure that the task or activity is safe. When I train the trainers, its me checking that the measures we have in place and the classrooms that we teach in comply with the HSE regulations, its an employees responsibility or a learners responsibility to follow these procedures and to ensure they conduct themselves safely and ensure that they don’t do anything stupid which may cause injury to themselves or others.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training regulations

Another factor is Data Protection or GDPR. We don’t cover GDPR in the Level 3 Award in Education and Training in great detail but the idea in the classroom or within the workplace is that we have make provisions for processing personal data which is anything that could identify and individuals identity with this date. We need to get permissions first, so trainers need permissions to register learners on qualifications and employers need permissions to register the person on the payroll. The Equality Act is an interesting law, its purpose is not about being equal. Its more to do about being fair. In this instance, if your business works with vulnerable individuals then you need to have a designated teacher or member of staff responsible for dealing with safeguarding, Clear procedures to follow if staff are concerned about a child and for checking staff before they work with children and staff who are trained to identify signs of abuse or other safeguarding issues including what to do if they or someone else is worried about a child.
