AI resume builder FAQs

What is an ai resume builder.

An AI resume builder is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to assist users in creating their resumes. These tools often have features like customized templates, content suggestions, optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), custom tailoring, feedback, and revision options.

What features does Enhancv’s AI resume builder offer?

Enhancv offers a range of AI features to help you create your resume with ease:

  • Templates and customization: AI resume builders typically offer a variety of templates that users can choose from. These templates are designed to be both visually appealing and to meet the standards expected in different industries.
  • ChatGPT-powered resume content writing and suggestions: Enhancv suggests content based on your input. For example, after entering your job history, you will receive suggestions for expanding upon your professional accomplishments or skills that align with your experience.
  • Optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): These systems are used by employers to screen resumes before they are seen by a human. Our builder suggests keywords and phrases that are likely to be favorable in these systems based on your job title.
  • Feedback and revision suggestions: we’ve got a resume checker that provides feedback on the overall quality of the resume, including suggestions for improving layout, grammar, and wording.

How do I use ChatGPT on my resume?

You can use ChatGPT on your resume for a range of activities, related to resume building, including:

  • Rewriting or writing from scratch difficult-to-write resume sections, such as your resume summary and job descriptions.
  • Making your resume bullet points more action and performance-oriented.
  • Suggesting skills and other keywords to include in your resume based on a job title.
  • Suggesting extra sections that can help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Using your resume as a starting point for an interview preparation mockup.
  • Using your resume as a base for writing your cover letter.

Can recruiters tell if my resume was written by ChatGPT?

As long as your application is customized with your job history and accomplishments, it’s unlikely that recruiters can tell if you used ChatGPT. ChatGPT can only help improve your resume writing, but lying on a resume is unacceptable.

Are resumes scanned by AI?

Resumes in some companies are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may or may not have AI features. These systems parse resumes and match them with job descriptions. Enhancv’s resume templates are tested for ATS compatibility, though a 100% parsing rate is not guaranteed due to varying ATS models because the content of the resume is more important for ATS-friendliness than the template itself.

Enhancv Executive has changed my life: One week & four interviews later, I will be making 150% more doing the job I chose.

Your resume is an extension of yourself – make one that’s truly you.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Resume Builders

Do you still have some questions? Check out the answers to the most common questions related to AI resume builders.

1. How can you effectively use an AI resume builder?

The best way to use AI to create your resume is to provide it with comprehensive information.

First, figure out exactly what’s in demand for the position you’re applying for. If you only give the resume builder a general idea of the role you’re aiming for, it’s going to give you a generalized resume.

The more details you provide about the exact job you want to apply for, the better. The AI will be able to focus on those particular areas and help you highlight your most relevant strengths and experiences.

Artificial Intelligence works best with well-structured data, so by inputting as much of it as necessary, you can get the most out of the AI resume builder.

So, add all your work experience, skills, details about your education , and anything else you think is relevant.

2. Can AI update my resume?

Yes, AI can be used to update your resume.

You can, for example, use an AI-powered resume builder to input your updated career information and then the AI will provide suggestions. The suggested changes may include optimizing the language on your resume, formatting the layout for more readability, or highlighting skills and experiences based on the job you want.

However, while AI can provide guidance, the final decision on everything is up to you. AI can’t fully understand the complexities of your personal experience and career objectives but it can make the resume-writing process a lot faster and easier.

3. Are there free AI resume builders?

While most AI resume builders include a paywall, some have a free version.

For example, Novorésumé offers a free version of the resume builder which can greatly help you create a compelling resume. The AI provides suggestions for improving your resume’s content and layout, as well as offers keywords based on your industry and professional background.

Give it a try for yourself!

And that’s our list of the best AI-powered resume builders!

Hopefully, now you’re familiar with the tools at your disposal and you’re ready to make the perfect resume with the help of AI and a user-friendly resume builder.

AI Resume Writer Frequently Asked Questions

How does an ai resume writer work.

An AI resume writer analyzes thousands of existing resumes across industries and job titles to learn how to write the perfect resume for any application. Simply input basic information such as your current job title and skills, and let our AI resume writer generate text for your resume’s summary and work experience sections.

Can my AI resume be personalized to each job I apply to?

AI resumes are the perfect option when you’re applying for many positions, because they allow you to personalize each resume quickly and efficiently. Whether you choose to personalize the content manually, or request changes from the AI itself, our AI resume builder can generate unlimited personalized resumes.

How effective are resumes generated by an AI resume writer?

Resumes generated by an AI resume writer are just as effective, if not more effective, than traditional, manually written resumes. Because our AI resume writer has analyzed so many effective resumes, it understands exactly what to say to help you stand apart from the crowd and catch a hiring manager’s attention, fast.

How long does it take to build a resume using AI?

An AI resume can take just minutes to build. Once you’ve input your information, VisualCV’s AI resume writer will generate your content in a matter of seconds. After that, it’s up to you how much or how little you’d like to change the content or add any extra sections, such as skills, to your resume.

What information should I provide an AI resume writer?

The more information you provide an AI resume writer, the better. However, VisualCV’s AI resume writer can create resume summaries and resume work experience entries using minimal information, such as your industry and level of experience. For example, telling the AI resume writer that you work in finance and your current job title is portfolio manager will lead the AI writer to create content based on previously analyzed portfolio manager resumes. This approach may require more editing on your end, but can be a great jumping off point when you’re feeling stuck. On the other hand, if you include more information about your accomplishments at your current position, the AI resume builder can give your work experience or summary sections that extra bit of polish you’re looking for.

Will my resume pass Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software?

All of VisualCV’s professionally designed resume templates have been formulated specifically to pass ATS software. Using our AI resume builder will not impact your resume’s ability to be seen by a real person in any way!

Should I use an AI resume writer, or a professional resume writer?

Whether to use AI or a professional resume writer can be a tricky decision, but, in general, our AI resume builder is a perfect jumping off point when you’re not sure how to begin writing. If your career has been especially long, you have many jobs to speak about, or your journey can be difficult or complicated to explain in a resume, you might find it easier to work with a (human) professional resume writer. However, the majority of resumes are straightforward and perfect candidates for our AI resume writer.

Can I make edits to my resume after the AI resume writer creates it?

You can always edit your resume in VisualCV’s resume builder after our AI resume writer has created it. If you aren’t happy with the content the AI resume builder provides, you can either edit the existing content or regenerate the provided content for a new suggestion.

The 5 best AI resume builders in 2024

Hero image with the logos of the best AI resume builders

Searching for a job is becoming a job of its own. With so many open positions, tests, and interview stages, joining the workforce of moving up is becoming harder. And with screening software automatically disqualifying candidates, the chances to get some 1-on-1 time with recruiters grow thin.

But you have something powerful in your corner: AI-powered resume builders can help you generate a starting resume from scratch, optimize an existing one, and help you adapt it to every single job opening you're going for. With dozens of AI resume builders to choose from out there—many of them acting like copies of one another—it can be hard to choose the best one for you.

I spent time testing every resume creator I could get my hands on, and these are my picks for the five best.

The 5 best AI resume builders

What makes the best ai resume builder, how we evaluate and test apps.

Given all that, here's what I looked for in the best AI resume builders:

Accuracy and relevance. Not all AI implementations are tuned the same way, so those that turned up general advice or content that didn't match my job were excluded.

Design and layout. Style is the first step to making a good impression, so I looked for the resume creators with the best templates and design controls.

Optimized for ATS. Most resumes get caught up in screening nets and never see human eyes. To make sure that's not your fate, these resume builders offer clean templates and scoring systems that help you get past the filter.

Adaptation. Not all of your experiences and skills make sense for each different job opening, so the best AI resume creators will offer ways to tune your content based on the target opening.

Extras . Anything that's a helpful plus is great, from cover letter generators to interview prep systems.

I tested these resume apps over the course of three weeks using a variety of methods. I generated resumes from scratch using the suggested step-by-step processes, uploaded my materials in PDF form and watched them get rearranged, and pasted a link to my LinkedIn profile and let the resume builder do the rest. Now that I'm swimming in resumes, take a look at the results.

Teal, our pick for the best free resume builder for tracking multiple job applications

Having a resume and a cover letter in your hands is only the first step. If you don't send it out, no one will really know who you are or see your value. Action is important, and Teal will definitely help you get into gear.

During onboarding, it wants to know your current situation, whether you've just graduated or accumulated decades of experience. You can enter your desired position, target total compensation, and indicate the ideal time to find or switch to a new job. After you fill these in, they'll always display on your dashboard—a quick summary of where you are and where you want to go.

There's more as far as job search productivity goes. There's a pipeline that shows the stages of the job searching process (for example, not applied > application sent > interviewing), so you can track your application process for multiple openings. As something changes in the status of an application, be sure to update it on the platform.

Teal never mentions that it optimizes its resumes for ATS, but there's a good collection of text-based templates, and the scoring system is pretty good at helping you match who you are to what they need. If you have trouble tracking how all your applications are going at the same time, Teal will remove the overwhelm and help you stick to the plan as much as possible.

Teal price: Free plan available with limited AI usage for resume achievements (5), professional summaries (2) and cover letter (1). Paid plans start at $9/week.

Teal, our pick for the best resume builder for building with an AI assistant

Feeling lost while putting together your resume? Enhancv offers an AI assistant that'll help you get everything you need down on the page.

If you've been keeping your LinkedIn profile up to date, you can pull your resume from there. Enhancv will adapt the information it finds there and lay it out in the platform, ready to edit. Once you have a first draft of your resume, click on the AI Assistant to explore the possibilities. Unlike ChatGPT, there's no actual chat input where you'll write prompts—not always, at least. Instead, you can click the commands on the screen to get it to optimize your resume. For example, you can ask to rewrite your title and headline, highlight your strengths, or create suggestions for new bullets. As you click through these options, the preview on the right will update with the new information and suggestions.

The AI Assistant will also help you create a cover letter. It's important that this document is as tailored to the job opening as possible, which is why it asks that you paste in the description. Once you click to create, it will actually display on your dashboard, not on the current screen. Click back to it on the top of the screen, open it, and edit everything until it's sharp enough.

To make sure that you get that face time, there's also a button for running the ATS check. This is a resume scoring feature, running through the entire text to find opportunities to optimize your material. It's a paid feature, so if you're serious about getting the best, consider hopping on the paid plan while you're hunting for a new position.

If you have a mentor or helpful friends and family, you can share your resume with them, and they can leave comments on it. Very helpful to combine AI-powered insights with real human reviews.

Enhancv price: 7-day free trial; from $13.32/month (billed semi-annually) or $24.99/month (billed monthly)

Writing a resume for the first time? Or just not happy with the one you currently have? Kickresume's AI tools can put a first draft into your hands and give you the tools to optimize it into a powerful job-searching tool.

To begin, click the New Resume with AI button. The app opens a chat experience, asking questions about you. It starts with your name and current job position. After that, pick your favorite template, and the AI starts generating. I was a bit skeptical here: will it be able to generate something on-point with so little information? Well, color me impressed: I got a starter resume with an original profile summary, on-point bullets on my work experience, appropriate skills and strengths, and even a set of hobbies.

This is just the beginning of Kickresume's AI features, though. Click the AI Toolbox on the left side of the screen to see what I mean. Here's a tour:

When editing your resume, you can use the AI writer in every section to generate or rewrite parts of it.

As you write, the document is being scored in the background: click the Analysis tab and follow the directions to improve the quality of your resume.

Need to practice some interview questions? Enter your desired job title to get Q&As, along with a brief hint of what the recruiter is trying to understand when asking that question.

The career coach recommends learning resources you should get to know to land your desired job. I've got a few new Coursera courses on my radar now.

When you feel you've got a good resume on your hands, you can get some human-powered insights too: you can purchase a proofreading service to make sure grammar is on point and that readability is good. With such a complete toolset, Kickresume will get you from empty-handed to ready to land your next job.

First, download your LinkedIn profile as a PDF: open your profile page, and click the More button just below your name and tagline. Hit that Save to PDF button, and save it to your computer. Once you upload it to Resume Worded, you'll get a step-by-step scoring and breakdown, offering tips on how to complete your profile with all the information you need. And hey, once you do this for LinkedIn, you can repeat the download as PDF action to get a fresh resume for a fraction of the effort, if you'd like.

If that baseline doesn't work for you, you can still build it inside Resume Worded. The button is hidden on the right side of the dashboard: scroll down to Additional Resources , and click the Don't have a resume? tab. You can browse the ATS-optimized templates, with explanations as to why each one works and how to leverage the structure to pass the automated checks. It's not a free feature, though: you'll have to buy your favorite template before you start customizing it.

To wrap up this useful feature set, you can also adapt your resume to job openings, with a similar user experience to others on this list: after pasting the job description, Resume Worded compares your resume with the requirements, offering a score to show you how far away you are from it. And whenever you log back in to keep working on it, you can access your resume and LinkedIn profile scores, so you know how long it's going to take to get that perfectly optimized resume.

ResumeNerd, our pick for the best resume builder for adapting your resume as you browse jobs

Personalization is everything in job searching. When you tailor your experience and skills to the job descriptions, you hit all the positive signals that recruiters are looking for. ResumeNerd can help you laser in and exceed expectations.

Complete the onboarding, and add your resume to the platform. There's a step-by-step flow to make sure you add everything about you, your skills, and your experiences. At the end of the process, you can choose one of the templates, each with a short description of why it rocks. Pick the color that you like the most and move forward to the last step. You'll always be able to add new sections if needed. Caveat: you can only download it as a TXT file for free—all other formats are locked behind the paid plan.

Back on the dashboard, you'll notice that ResumeNerd scores your current resume. When you click to see all the improvements you should make, there's a list of issues you can tackle to bring the score all the way up to 1,000. Keep adding more details to make sure that document is the most accurate representation of your professional life.

After you add your resume to the platform, click the jobnerd button at the top of the screen. There's a job feed there with the day's suggestions of jobs that fit your skills, with a percentage score of how much your resume is matching the description. You can click to see the job opening's details. While there, ResumeNerd is detecting the skills the company is looking for, and it offers you shortcuts to add those skills to your resume, ensuring you're matching what they're looking for.

On the right side of the job posting, you can click to generate a cover letter based on your resume and the job posting you're currently looking at. Sadly, it doesn't actually generate anything with AI—it's a stock template that you have to customize with your own data manually. Fill out the placeholder data with your personal information, and give it a good proofread to make sure you're hitting all the targets.

When you're ready to apply, you can click the link within the platform. You'll be taken to the original posting's page and you can do everything you need to apply. This is a nice shortcut to get you to apply to more jobs. Keep repeating this flow for all other positions that you're interested in, and those interviews are sure to come along soon.

One warning: you can use ResumeNerd on the cheap for a couple weeks, but the price will go up significantly after that, so keep an eye on those subscription costs.

ResumeNerd price: From $2.75 for 2 weeks; the price goes up after that

Can AI write a good resume?

As with most things generative AI, resume builders are good starting point, but you shouldn't rely on them to get you from zero to complete on their own. Use AI to get a few good ideas and do some research: How much did your work with your previous company improve revenue? Did any of your projects have a big impact in daily operations? Are there any notable achievements? AI gets the ball rolling, but it's up to you to score the goal.

At the same time, be sure to rewrite parts of the generated content to make it match to your personality and original voice. While an AI-optimized resume may get through the ATS systems, a recruiter may be able to tell that a resume has a lot of generated content and toss it in the digital trash. If someone's looking to hire a human, they want to see that humanity from the start.

With the help of AI, you don't have to invest as much time writing a resume or cover letters from scratch. You can now dedicate more time to strategy and personalization, ensuring you get through automated screenings, land more interviews, and secure your dream job.

Supercharge your job search with Rezi

I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

Man holding resume in front of a computer

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

Sign up to get the BEST of Tom's Guide direct to your inbox.

Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

Resume created by Rezi.ai

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

Resume created by Resumaker

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

Resume created by Teal

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

Resume created by Kickresume

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

Honorary score: 4/5

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

10 resume writing tips that will make you stand out.

Here are some helpful tips on how you can ensure that your resume not only highlights your accomplishments and skills, but also captures employers’ attention immediately. 1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. Your resume should showcase your skills and accomplishments as it relates to the role you are applying for. Even if your employment history is not aligned with the role, it is important to find elements that match the requirements of the position you are applying for. This will show employers that you have the potential to grow within the role, and therefore will be more inclined to move forward with your candidacy. 2. A good self-introduction can do wonders. Before you dive into the technical details of your past roles and education, try to add a short introduction of no more than 2-3 sentences. This is your place to tell employers a little about yourself and don’t be afraid to be creative. A few sentences can give employers a chance to get to know you and your potential contribution to their companies. Also, a self-introduction can be useful if you are applying for a role that is outside your current field - use this section as a means to tell employers why this specific position or field interests you. 3. Remember to use a reverse chronological order when listing your jobs, degrees and/or projects (from new to old). Your resume space is limited to one page (unless you have particularly extensive experience) and employers read it from top to bottom when looking for the latest employment experience at the top. 4. Do not use first person in your writing, such as "I made presentations", or “I managed people". This is incorrect and it makes the resume seem like a story. Since this is an official document, it should speak a professional language. For example, you should write that your role in a certain company included: "Preparing presentations", "Managing employees", "Creating collaborations". These should appear as bullet points and neatly organized. 5. Be brief! It is not necessary to list all the roles you have ever held. You want to showcase your most recent experience as it is most relevant to who you are today, and share your less relevant experience in one line at the bottom of your resume. Refrain from including short-term positions that are not relevant to the skills that are required for the position you are interested in (working as a waiter during the studying for a degree, etc.). Also, be careful not to leave "blanks" in your resume, or period during which you did not work. This can make employers wonder about your credibility and reduce your chances of being considered for the role. 6. Use quantitative information to outline your accomplishments. People find it easier to grasp quantitative information, so try to use numbers and percentages when describing your professional experience. Using data will not only specify your experience, but also make it sound more powerful by using concrete examples. For example, instead of saying "budget management", try using "budget management of 10 million dollars per year". Or instead of "employee management", you can say "managing 6 employees". This tip is also useful for entry-level jobs - instead of saying "responsibility for handling customer inquiries", try saying "responsibility for handling about 10,000 customer inquiries a month". 7. Don’t forget to include your soft skills. In your skills section, you should emphasize both your technical and analytical skills, as well your human relations skills. Employers want to know that you will be able to get along with others on the team, so even if you are a security expert with extensive knowledge on the most innovative software, your resume should also emphasize your ability to work in a team environment and communicate well with others. 8. Incorporate keywords into your resume. Use keywords that derive from the job description, from recruiting company’s website, or from descriptions of similar jobs in other companies. For example, if it says that candidates must have knowledge in Microsoft office, add it to your resume - do not let the employer make assumptions about your experience. Be mindful to not overdo it - stay true to yourself and your experience. 9. Pay attention to the smallest details. Impressive design, no spelling errors, a uniform font, bulleted chapter headings, and spaces between paragraphs with reasonable margins. All of these finer details show that you not only invested in your resume, but also you are organized and attentive to detail – which are important qualities to have in any position. 10. Make sure your resume is neat, easy to read and symmetrical. You will have a lot to say about your accomplishments, but the important highlights of your career will be lost if your resume is cluttered and tires the employer. Choose a professional design that highlights your experience and capabilities, and do not be afraid to add a little color so that your resume stands out from other candidates.

What is the difference between Resume and CV?

The distinction between a resume and a CV lies in their length, content, and purpose. In the United States, the terms are often used interchangeably, but in other parts of the world like Europe, they have different meanings.

Resume: - Length: Typically 1-2 pages. - Content: Summarizes your work experience, education, skills, and achievements. It's tailored to the specific job you're applying for, focusing on relevant qualifications. - Purpose: Mainly used for job applications in various industries. Its concise format makes it suitable for quickly showcasing your qualifications to potential employers.

CV (Curriculum Vitae): - Length: Can vary in length, often several pages. - Content: Provides a comprehensive overview of your entire professional history, including all jobs, education, research, publications, presentations, awards, and more. It's more exhaustive and doesn't necessarily get customized for each application. - Purpose: Commonly used in academic and research fields, as well as when applying for positions where a detailed overview of your accomplishments is crucial.

In the US, the distinction between these two terms is prevalent. However, in many other countries, especially in Europe, the term "CV" is used as a synonym for what Americans would call a resume.

It's important to note that conventions can vary, so when applying for jobs or academic opportunities, it's always wise to follow the regional norms and expectations. If you're interested in delving deeper into the subject of Curriculum Vitae, explore our comprehensive guide: "How to write a Resume."

What to include in a Resume?

A resume is a concise document that highlights your qualifications, skills, and experiences, tailored specifically for a job application. It should effectively showcase your suitability for a particular role and capture the attention of potential employers. Here's what you should include in a resume:

  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Optional: LinkedIn Profile (if it's professional and up-to-date)
  • A brief statement that summarizes your career goals, skills, and what you bring to the role.
  • Tailor this section to match the specific job you're applying for.
  • Highlight relevant skills that align with the job description.
  • Categorize skills into sections like Technical Skills, Soft Skills, Language Proficiencies, etc.
  • List your relevant work experiences in reverse chronological order.
  • Include the job title, company name, location, dates of employment, and key responsibilities and achievements.
  • Use bullet points to describe your accomplishments in each role.
  • Quantify your achievements when possible (e.g., "Increased sales by 20%," "Managed a team of 10").
  • List your educational background in reverse chronological order.
  • Include the degree(s) earned, institution name, location, dates attended, and any honors or awards.
  • Include relevant certifications, workshops, seminars, and training programs.
  • This section can demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Highlight relevant projects you've worked on, especially if they demonstrate your skills and accomplishments.
  • Include the project's name, your role, a brief description, and outcomes.
  • Include any relevant awards, honors, or achievements that showcase your capabilities.
  • List memberships in industry associations, organizations, or societies that pertain to the role.
  • Include relevant volunteer work or extracurricular activities that highlight your character and skills.
  • Similar to the resume, you can mention that references are available if required.
  • Use a clean and professional format with a readable font.
  • Use bullet points for easy scanning.
  • Keep the resume to one page for early-career professionals; consider a second page for more experienced candidates.
  • Ensure consistent formatting for headings, bullet points, and text alignment.

Tailor your resume for each application by aligning your experiences and skills with the job description. Focus on the most relevant information that will make you stand out as a strong candidate. Proofread carefully to ensure accuracy and clarity. A well-crafted resume will enhance your chances of getting noticed and progressing to the interview stage.

What is a chronological resume, and what order should it be in?

A chronological resume is a type of resume format that focuses on presenting your work history in reverse chronological order. This means that you list your most recent job or experience first and then proceed in reverse order, highlighting your earlier roles. This format is commonly used and is particularly effective if you have a consistent and strong work history. The order of sections in a chronological resume typically follows this structure:

Remember to keep the layout clean, use clear headings, and employ bullet points for easy readability. Tailor your descriptions and achievements to align with the job you're seeking. The chronological format is effective for showcasing a strong work history, but if you have gaps in employment or are changing careers, you might consider other resume formats that better highlight your strengths in those situations.

  • Contact Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of the page.
  • Summary or Objective Statement: Provide a brief overview of your skills, experiences, and career goals. This section is optional but can be beneficial if tailored to the specific job you're applying for.
  • Job Title: Your job title in that role.
  • Company: The name of the company you worked for.
  • Dates: The duration of your employment (month and year).
  • Responsibilities and Achievements: Use bullet points to outline your key responsibilities and accomplishments for each role. Focus on quantifiable achievements and specific contributions.
  • Degree: The degree you earned.
  • Major: Your field of study.
  • Institution: The name of the institution where you studied.
  • Graduation Date: The date you graduated or expect to graduate.
  • Skills: Highlight relevant skills, both hard and soft, that are pertinent to the job you're applying for. This can include technical skills, languages, software proficiency, and more.
  • Optional Sections: Depending on your circumstances, you might include additional sections such as certifications, awards, volunteer work, or relevant projects.
  • References: Mention that references are available upon request. You can include this statement, or if requested by the employer, provide references' contact information.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a formal document that accompanies your resume or CV when applying for a job, internship, or other professional opportunities. It's typically sent along with your application materials, either as a physical letter or as part of an email. A cover letter serves as an introduction to your application and provides additional context about your qualifications and motivations.

Key components of a cover letter include:

  • Contact Information: Similar to your resume, include your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of the letter.
  • Date: The date on which you're writing the letter.
  • Recipient's Information: Address the letter to the hiring manager or relevant person. If you have their name, use it. If not, a generic salutation like "Dear Hiring Manager" can suffice.
  • Introduction: Begin with a professional and engaging opening paragraph. Mention the specific job title you're applying for and briefly state how you learned about the position or the company.
  • Body Paragraphs: Use one or two paragraphs to highlight your relevant skills, qualifications, and experiences. You can expand upon points from your resume, but avoid restating everything verbatim. Focus on specific examples that demonstrate your suitability for the position and how your skills align with the company's needs.
  • Motivation and Fit: Explain why you're interested in the role and the company. Show that you've done your research and discuss how your goals and values align with the company's mission and culture.
  • Closing Paragraph: Express your enthusiasm for the opportunity and invite the reader to review your resume or CV for more details. Indicate your willingness to discuss your application further and provide your contact information.
  • Closing Salutation: Use a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards."
  • Signature: Sign your name above your typed name.

A well-crafted cover letter allows you to showcase your communication skills, demonstrate your genuine interest in the position, and provide insights that may not be fully covered in your resume. It's an opportunity to make a personalized connection with the employer and stand out from other applicants. Customize each cover letter for the specific job you're applying for, addressing the company's needs and showcasing how you can contribute to their success.

Resume Analytics

First, what is an AI resume builder?

AI resume builders (or writers) are tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms designed to automatically generate resumes and other job-related documents (like cover letters).

Based on user input, these algorithms analyze relevant job postings, candidates’ experience and qualifications, and look for relevant keywords and skills to help users build a tailored resume .

And what are the benefits of using one?

  • It saves you time.
  • It writes personalized content for you.
  • It formats the resume.

Without further ado, let’s find the best one for you!

1. Kickresume's AI Resume Writer

Let's address the elephant in the room — I work for Kickresume. However, I tested our tool the same way as the others, step-by-step, and objectively.

Kickresume’s AI Resume Builder is powered by OpenAI's GPT-3 NLP model. This model is the world’s most powerful natural language processing model, which is very well-suited for creating structured documents like resumes.

All you need to do is enter a job title — and it generates a unique and personalized work experience section. To create a full resume using AI, you simply fill in a 2-minute questionnaire.

How does it work?

After logging in to your account, on the dashboard in Your documents, click on New resume with AI . This takes you straight into a short questionnaire which takes 2 minutes to complete (you can check the preview in the GIF above). It includes questions about your personal information, your most recent work experience, your education, skills, and hobbies.

Your resume will then be generated. You can customize the final resume if you want to — for example, I added some personal details and changed the template. But you can also re-order the sections, change the icons, or add any additional sections (10+ optional sections available).

Alternatively, you can also use AI to write only bullet points for your work experience section. You can either import your existing resume, build it from a resume sample from our database, import your LinkedIn profile, or create one from scratch manually. Then, AI generates bullet points for your work experience section based simply on your job title. It took about 5 seconds.

You can edit these if you want them to have a more personalized feel, add new ones, or regenerate them if you don't like them. Then you can customize the final resume (the design, template, font, re-order sections, etc.).

Pros & cons of Kickresume's AI Resume Builder

  • Increased web traffic by 25% through innovative SEO techniques
  • Wrote and edited compelling copy for the website, blog, and social media
  • Edited and proofread documents for grammar, style, and content
  • Resume design. Kickresume also specializes in resume design, so all of its 35+ resume templates are designed by a team of professional typographers and recruiters. You can customize and adjust every design aspect, like fonts, spacing, colors, and more. What I really like is that you can change the icons for sections and personal information. It made my creative soul very happy.
  • Easy to use. One of the most straightforward AI resume-writing tools out there. All of the steps are very intuitive and are complemented by helpful tips and links to comprehensive guides throughout the process. The developers are clearly no strangers to UX design.
  • You can re-order sections. Depending on which section you want to highlight and place at the top, you can re-order the sections simply by dragging. This comes very handy since by choosing a suitable resume format , you can easily steer attention to certain sections and away from others.
  • Free option. You can create a full resume using AI for free.

The not so good:

  • May require personalization. Given that the text has been written by AI rather than you and had limited information as input, you might still need to make some adjustments and tweak the details to make it more personal in the end. For instance, since this tool only uses your latest job title as input, it has no knowledge of your previous work experience or quantifiable achievements.

Kickresume’s pricing

  • Free: With a free account you can create 1 complete resume using AI. Alternatively, you can generate bullet points for multiple work experience sections.
  • Premium users can create 30+ career documents (including resumes & cover letters) monthly. Premium subscription starts at $5/month .
  • Bonus: Option to get 6 months of free premium for students and teachers
  • Bonus # 2: If you choose the yearly subscription, up to 5 of your friends get a month of Kickresume Premium for free!

By the way, Kickresume also has an AI Resume Checker tool that offers feedback to help you improve it and an AI Cover Letter Writer that produces a rock-solid cover letter in seconds.

2. Resumaker.ai

ai resume builder

Resumaker.ai is a simple resume-building tool that helps you craft a resume in minutes thanks to pre-written phrases.

This resume builder is easy to use and requires minimal effort. You start by picking a resume template design you like. Then you fill in your personal information, your job title, and keywords.

In the last stage, the AI technology helps auto-fill certain resume sections (resume summary, work experience, and skills) with pre-written phrases . You can add more phrases or edit them. These phrases are very complex and high-quality.

In the work experience section, you can add multiple jobs and job titles, each with its unique pre-written description in bullet points. Then you need to manually fill in details like company names or dates, and other sections, including education.

Pros & cons of Resumaker.ai

  • To give you an example, this is a suggested sentence for a Data Scientist resume summary: “ Data Scientist with a deep understanding of analysis and programming, proficient in Python and R. Experienced in building machine learning models and data visualization.”
  • Interactive assistant. The built-in assistant interactively guides you through the application in a few steps.
  • No free option. There's no option to create a resume for free.
  • Limited number of phrases. For the resume summary, the tool suggests 5 phrases to choose from, and for the work experience section, you can choose from 10.
  • Limited customization. You can choose one of the 10 templates. However, you then have very limited options for customization. Line spacing and color are the only things you can change.

Resumaker’s pricing

  • No option to create a resume for free.
  • Subscription starts at $0.99 for a 7-day access . You must cancel this trial before it ends, otherwise, it automatically renews and you'll be charged $29.70 every 4 weeks.
  • Alternatively, a 3-month premium subscription costs $23.75 and a 6-month subscription costs $45.75

3. Resume Genius

ai resume writer

Resume Genius is a resume-building tool featuring a very effective resume generator software that can help you quickly create customized career documents.

You start by answering a few questions about your past work experience and the highest attained education level. In the next step, you're presented with 6 recommended templates, though you can choose to “ view all templates.”

In the next step, you'll complete and fill in all these sections in this order: contact information, experience, education, certifications, skills, career objective, references, and optional additional sections.

In the work experience section, you get 25+ recommended bullet points for your chosen job title (see this stage in the picture above). You can also choose from 60+ recommended skills. Finally, you can choose from 15+ recommended career objectives.

Pros & cons of Resume Genius

  • For example, this is a suggested work experience bullet point for the job of Data Scientist: “ Monitored products from statistical programs for accuracy, consistency and statistical validity. ”
  • Provides tips. This tool is very user-friendly, guiding you through every step as well as providing tips for writing and improvement.
  • A lot of phrases to choose from. The exact number of suggested phrases depends on the specific job title. However, for all of the occupations we tested, there was a pretty lengthy selection (usually 25+, but for some even 99+).
  • Nice templates. The templates are all very sleek and look professional.
  • Step-by-step editor. As mentioned before, when filling in your information, you have to fill them in a pre-defined order and can't jump from section to section or skip them.
  • Very limited customization. Both in terms of customizing the templates (as you can only change the font size and color of the template) and ordering the resume sections. For instance, if you're a fresh graduate and would rather use a functional resume format highlighting your skills at the top of the resume, you wouldn't be able to. Unfortunately, the sections can't be re-ordered.
  • No free option. No option to create a resume for free; you can only start a 14-day trial period for $2.95.

Resume Genius pricing

  • 14-day trial plan: $2.90 (you have to cancel, otherwise it will auto-renew and you’ll be billed $23.90 every 30 days )
  • 1-month plan for $6.40 (you'll be billed annually at $76.80)

ai resume builder

With this AI resume builder tool, you can automatically generate descriptions for certain resume sections. All descriptions are tailored for specific jobs in your field and optimized for applicant tracking systems (ATS) by targeting keywords.

At first, you're asked whether you want to create a resume from scratch, import an existing one from LinkedIn, or create one from a sample resume. Next, you select whether you want a job-tailored resume or a general-purpose one.

Then you need to select the job title you're interested in, a company (if applicable), and you can paste the specific job description, too. You also fill in the name of the field and your experience level.

At the final stage, you have to fill in details for different resume sections manually (check out the picture above). Rezi's AI writer tool can generate relevant and convincing descriptions for selected sections of your resume (experience, projects, involvement, skills, and summary). Finally, you can tweak and edit your AI-generated resume as much as you need to get the ideal final result.

Pros & cons of Rezi.ai

  • AI keyword targeting. Rezi is content-focused — it suggests the right keywords and details that best fit the role you're targeting. The AI picks keywords from the job ad (which you can paste in the first stage) and suggests bullet points that contain these.
  • Gives improvement tips & points out mistakes. This tool also assigns your resume a score based on its current design and content and gives you personalized suggestions for improving both the content and formatting. It also points out any obvious mistakes.
  • Can complete 1 resume for free. With a free account, you'll receive enough credits to create one standard-formatted resume using AI.
  • Auto-adjust to fit one page. Depending on how much content you provide, the auto-adjust feature will re-adjust the content to fit one page and ensure there's either enough or not too much white space.
  • It's a bit time-consuming. Compared to other tools mentioned in this review, this tool takes a bit more time to complete a full resume. There are a lot of sections that require manual completion and the first stage of the process also requires more input.
  • Poor selection of templates. There was only 1 free template which was very basic. The other 5 templates were only for Pro subscription users and were also mediocre at best.
  • No option to re-order sections. Similar to Resume Genius, with this AI resume writer you don't have the option to choose your own order of resume sections.

Rezi's pricing

  • Free: With a free account you get limited credits for the AI tool (enough for 1-2 full resumes using AI tools). Each use of the AI builder subtracts credits.
  • Additional AI credits are available as a one-time purchase for $10 .
  • For $3 per month you get 1 resume limit, a limited access to keyword targeting and content analysis, and can access only standard resume templates.
  • For $29 per month you get full access to all features and 100,000 AI credits which renew every month.

5. Skillroads

AI resume writer

Skillroads is a fairly advanced AI resume builder that can not only generate a resume for you but also assess and review your current one. It relies on the completion of a pretty lengthy, though intuitive questionnaire.

First, you must provide your personal information like name, email, and phone number. What comes next is a 6-step questionnaire containing questions regarding your desired job, your objectives, highlights, experience, skills, and education.

While in some of these steps, you'll only need to click on provided options, some require a bit more time to complete.

Once you get to the last step, your resume will be generated. You can then edit it (to some extent) and preview the final result.

Pros & cons of Skillroads

  • Creates a full resume based on the questionnaire. Though you should personalize some of the details, the AI takes care of everything else.
  • 1 resume generated for free by AI. You can create and download 1 PDF resume for free.
  • Online 24/7 help available. Even though other resume builders also had online chat support (like Kickresume), Skillroads' employee replied in under 2 minutes and was very helpful. Cheers Valery!
  • AI-written resume summary was satisfactory. In the words of Comrade Dyatlov, not great, not terrible. It used the “highlights section” as input, so pay extra attention if you want your summary to be relevant.

The not so good:

  • Can't leave the phone number blank. It required entering a phone number even though I wanted to leave that field blank.
  • The website is lagging. Moving on to the next steps in the questionnaire took way more than it should have — both when trying different browsers and using different devices & wifi networks.
  • No possibility of adding your own content. You can only fill in certain sections with the pre-defined content available. For example, in the skills section, I could only click on the provided skill and not add any of my own. The same happens in the highlights section.
  • Only one available template and no customization. There's no selection of templates to choose from. The pre-defined one is very bland and basic. Plus, there are no customization options at all. The text size is also very small and you can't change it.
  • Can't re-order sections. After the resume is generated, you can't edit the order of the sections, which is not ideal for job seekers who don't want a chronological resume format.

Skillroads' pricing

  • Free : You can create 1 resume using AI for free and download it in PDF or .doc format.
  • For a one-time payment of $9.99 , you can have an unlimited number of resumes (though it doesn't mention whether you can also use the AI tool without limits).

How To Use Artificial Intelligence in Resume Builder

Frank Hackett

Using Resume Builder’s Expert Writing Suggestions

How artificial intelligence can boost your resume, the limits of artificial intelligence, frequently asked questions about using artificial intelligence in resume builder.

You can use artificial intelligence (AI) to write your resume’s main sections more quickly. While AI can boost your resume, it’s also a good idea to understand its limitations. Read on to learn how to make the most of AI on your resume.

Step 1: Select your career level

When using our resume builder app , you’ll first tell us how long you’ve been working. If you haven’t been in the workforce yet or have little work history, the app will ask if you are a student.

#

Step 2: Select a template

Next, you’ll be able to select one of our 25+ expert-reviewed resume templates. You can always change your template and color scheme later.

#

Step 3: Choose an upload method

You can choose to upload an existing resume either from a document, from Google Drive or from Dropbox. Or, you can start from scratch.

#

Step 4: Use the personal editor tool to edit or create your resume.

Here you will fill out or edit the following sections:

  • Work history
  • Additional Sections

When using the work history summary tool, you’ll first input or edit a job listing.

#

Once you do this, you can use AI to insert expert recommendations with work experience for your job title. You can always edit these to better suit your experience.

#

You can complete the prompts to continue editing and finalizing your resume.

Resume Builder AI expert recommendations can get you quickly from a blank page to a first draft and can give you plenty of ideas for more content to include. It lets you search any word or phrase, not just job titles, so you can turn a prompt like “Spanish” into “Taught Spanish language and culture classes to students of all ages and abilities” in one click. It also helps you add the right keywords so your resume performs well on applicant tracking systems (ATS) .

Suggestions follow best practices for resume phrasing, tone, and verb tense, ensuring you sound appropriate and professional. Using this feature gives you a better sense of that language style, so you can more easily add information to your resume later on.

Generative AI tools are powerful, but they haven’t changed the fact that writing your resume is a two-stage process:

1. Brainstorm positive career experiences. (e.g., What were your duties and achievements for each past job? What work strengths or credentials are you proud of?)

2. Analyze those experiences against your target job and delete any irrelevant ones.

The first stage requires you to think creatively, while the second stage requires you to think critically. AI is creative: It’s useful in the first stage but less so in the second. It can produce strong resume content and ideas, but you still have to view that content through the lens of your target job and determine what to include or omit on your final resume.

For this reason, the AI tool is less useful if you’re making a big career change. It generates text ideas based on your past titles, so those ideas are less relevant when you’re looking for a very different role. Suggestions may also be inaccurate if your job title is unusual or a misnomer. To account for this, search the general title of the role you actually held. For instance, if your role was essentially sales manager, search that title for ideas rather than your given job title.

Finally, AI doesn’t incorporate your performance data such as money saved, percentage of revenue growth, or number of clients served. These are important details you’ll need to add to your resume directly. For example, “Sales Manager” results include:

  • Developed sales strategies and implemented customer service strategies to increase customer satisfaction
  • Developed sales strategies and implemented customer service strategies to increase customer satisfaction by over 20%

Can I use ChatGPT in combination with Resume Builder? -

Yes. Since the Resume Builder app lets you copy in outside information, feel free to work on your job descriptions in ChatGPT as well.

ChatGPT can generate text suggestions based on no more than your job title. After creating your ChatGPT account, try this simple query: “I’m a [job title]. Write a job description for my resume.” Then, review the auto-generated text for ideas of what to cover on your resume. You can then flesh out and resubmit your query with work highlights to generate more specific ideas. For instance, if you’re a sales manager, you could enter: “I’m a sales manager. In the past year, I led my team to generate 120% of our revenue goal. I also developed a training program that helped improve client retention. Write a job description for my resume.”

Does artificial intelligence mean I don’t have to write my resume anymore? -

No. One of the key steps to creating a resume is brainstorming your positive career experiences on a separate document or sheet of paper. This lets you jot down plenty of strong examples and details you can then pull from to write the best possible resume. AI hasn’t changed this. In fact, view the technology as something to support your brainstorming, not replace it. The AI tool’s text ideas are just that – ideas. Let them stimulate your thinking about your past work and help you recall and write about achievements you’re proud of. This is the best approach to building a truly relevant and distinctive resume.

How To Make Your Job Application AI-Proof

While our collective goal is to find a job we can stay in for a stable period of time, the current job market is volatile. Traditional advice in times like these is to always have your resume ready, just in case.

Why AI has revolutionized everything, including job searching

AI has changed the face of job search as much as it has changed nearly everything else. In a more general sense, AI makes all departments more productive . Prodoscore data proves this with a sampling from May 2024, where we tracked the AI use of 1,320 employees.

As a productivity monitoring solution, we can tie that AI use back to employee productivity . We split the employee data into three groups: high productivity, average productivity, and low productivity. None of the AI users were in the low productivity group, and the largest percentage of AI users by far were in the high productivity group. Essentially, the highest contributors use AI judiciously to get their work done.

This definitely holds true for HR professionals; there is simply no way to do the job effectively without the help of AI tools. Shopping for a job today looks very different than it did five years ago. Your resume has to pass AI guardrails that human resources departments have put in place to reduce tidal waves of applications. Getting past the gate requires a complete retooling of your resume.

AI technology that is used to vet resumes is referred to as AI-Powered Application Tracking Systems (ATS) . This requires you to write your resume with two layers: one layer for human readers and one layer for machine readability. Since over 98% of Fortune 500 companies and 66% of large companies use ATS, it is an absolute requirement to optimize your resume for them.

Ditch the Formatting and Graphics

In the 2010s and early 2020s, resumes with an attractive design layout were popular. Now, you have to ditch the Canva and Adobe layouts for a more plain-text version. Resumes with design elements and graphics are too tough to parse and may be automatically rejected by ATS. The plainer it looks, the easier it is for a machine to parse. However, you still want to save it as a PDF as the ATS solutions prefer this format. Use sans-serif fonts and clear section headers.

Keep Writing Error-Free and Concise

Use tools like Grammarly or Gemini for Google Workspace to reduce industry jargon, avoid overuse of acronyms, and keep the tone professional. You will also want to look at keywords from the job posting and ensure they are used in both your cover letter and resume.

Where you have to use an acronym, spell it out, even if it is a commonly used one in your industry. You essentially want to remove any stumbling blocks for AI, including overuse of punctuation. Avoid more arcane punctuation altogether, such as em dashes (—).

Try rewriting your resume and cover letter from scratch, and then run it through one of the above-mentioned tools to catch any issues. You’ll also want to avoid writing in the passive voice, which any grammar tool or AI solution for writing will catch.

Prominently Feature Your Skills and Experience

Paying attention to formatting and grammar is important, but the VIP things that ATS tools rank for are skills and experience. Make sure these each have their own section and are clearly denoted with goals that were met and actual results.

Make Your Educational Qualifications Clear

Make sure that your educational qualifications are listed in detail in a section marked “Education.” One of the first things that AI is looking for is an advanced degree. To make it easier to check your qualifications, include a phone number or email from your alma mater, which leads directly to the department an HR professional will want to contact to verify your degree(s).

Test Your Resume With an AI Tool

Fighting fire with fire is an acceptable strategy for the rise of the machines. Upload your resume to an AI tool such as Jobscan , which will check it for AI compatibility. This final check will give you the confidence you need that your resume will eventually be seen by a human. These tools also offer templates for AI-optimized resumes and cover letters that you can follow.

Do Not Skip Optional Assessments

If an assessment on a job site is listed as optional, view it as mandatory. Optional assessments may be just that, or they may be a more elaborate CAPTCHA method to ensure that applicants using bots to submit resumes are knocked out of the race.

The job application process isn’t easy, but AI tools make it easier for both applicants and employers. If you’re a high performer, chances are good that you’re using AI already to optimize your work and are well-positioned to AI-proof your application.

Don’t forget the human element, though. AI is usually used just for initial resume screening. Make sure your resume makes you sound like the creative, results-driven professional you are. There is a danger that too much optimization with AI tools will make it sound stilted and boring. You can walk it back from that pretty easily with some light editing.

Common Mistakes When Applying for AI Jobs: How to Avoid Them

Artificial intelligence (AI) is growing rapidly, offering numerous exciting career opportunities. However, applying for AI jobs can be highly competitive, and many candidates make avoidable mistakes that hinder their chances of success. This article explores the common mistakes applicants make when applying for AI roles and provides practical tips to avoid them, increasing your likelihood of landing your dream job in AI.

1. Failing to Customize Your Resume and Cover Letter

One of the most common mistakes candidates make is submitting generic resumes and cover letters. AI roles can vary significantly from one company to another, and a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works.

How to Avoid:

1. Tailor Your Resume: Customize your resume to highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the specific job you're applying for. Use keywords from the job description to pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

2. Personalize Your Cover Letter: Write a personalized cover letter that explains why you are interested in the role and how your background makes you a strong fit for the position.

2. Overlooking Soft Skills

While technical skills are crucial for AI roles, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are also highly valued. Many candidates focus solely on their technical abilities and neglect to demonstrate their soft skills.

 How to Avoid:

1. Highlight Soft Skills: Include examples of how you have successfully worked in teams, communicated complex ideas, or solved challenging problems in your previous roles.

2. Balanced Approach: Ensure your resume and cover letter reflect a balance of technical prowess and soft skills.

3. Lack of Evidence for Your Skills

Simply listing your skills on your resume is not enough. Employers want to see evidence of how you have applied those skills in real-world situations.

1. Quantify Your Achievements : Use metrics and concrete examples to showcase your achievements. For instance, mention specific projects, the technologies used, and the impact of your work.

2. Portfolio : Create a portfolio that includes links to your GitHub, Kaggle, or any other platforms where you have contributed to AI projects . Demonstrate your work with detailed project descriptions and outcomes.

4. Ignoring Continuous Learning and Development

AI is a fast-evolving field, and staying updated with the latest advancements is crucial. Employers look for candidates who are committed to continuous learning.

1. Certifications and Courses: Highlight any relevant certifications, online courses, or workshops you have completed. Mention the skills you acquired and how they are applicable to the role.

2. Stay Updated: Regularly engage with AI communities , attend webinars, and read research papers to stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies.

5. Not Understanding the Company and Role

Applying for a job without understanding the company's mission, values, and the specific role can be a major turn-off for employers. It shows a lack of genuine interest and preparation.

1. Research the Company: Spend time researching the company's history, products, culture, and recent news. Understand their mission and values.

2. Understand the Role: Thoroughly read the job description and understand the key responsibilities and required skills. Be prepared to discuss how your background aligns with the role during the interview.

6. Poor Interview Preparation

Many candidates fail to adequately prepare for interviews, leading to poor performance and missed opportunities.

1. Mock Interviews: Practice with mock interviews to get comfortable with common AI interview questions. Focus on both technical and behavioral questions.

2. STAR Method: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. This approach helps you provide clear and concise responses.

3. Technical Preparation: Be prepared to solve coding challenges and discuss your projects in detail. Brush up on fundamental AI concepts, algorithms, and frameworks.

7. Neglecting Networking

Networking is a powerful tool for finding job opportunities and getting referrals, but many candidates overlook its importance.

1. Join AI Communities: Participate in online AI communities, forums, and social media groups. Engage in discussions, share your work, and learn from others.

2. Attend Events: Attend AI conferences, workshops, and meetups. These events provide opportunities to network with professionals and learn about job openings.

3. Leverage LinkedIn: Connect with AI professionals on LinkedIn, share relevant content, and engage with posts to increase your visibility.

8. Lack of a Personal Brand

Building a personal brand can set you apart from other candidates. Many applicants fail to create an online presence that showcases their expertise and passion for AI.

1. Build an Online Portfolio: Create a personal website or blog where you can showcase your projects, share articles, and demonstrate your knowledge.

2. Engage on Social Media: Use platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Medium to share your insights on AI trends, technologies, and projects.

3. Consistency: Be consistent in your online presence and make sure your profiles reflect your professional image.

9. Overlooking the Importance of a Clear Career Objective

A clear career objective helps employers understand your goals and how they align with the company's mission. Many candidates neglect this aspect, making it harder for employers to see their potential fit.

1. Define Your Objective: Clearly state your career goals and how the role aligns with them. This can be included in your resume, cover letter, or during the interview.

2. Align with the Company: Tailor your objective to reflect how you can contribute to the company’s goals and mission.

10. Ignoring Feedback

Receiving and acting on feedback is crucial for improvement. Many candidates fail to seek feedback after interviews, missing opportunities to learn and grow.

1. Seek Feedback: After interviews, ask for feedback on your performance. Understand areas where you can improve.

2. Continuous Improvement: Use the feedback to refine your skills, update your resume, and improve your interview techniques.
