WATCH: King Charles III gives 1st address to Britain and the Commonwealth as new monarch

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III vowed in his first speech to the nation as monarch Friday to carry on Queen Elizabeth II’s “lifelong service,” as Britain entered a new age under a new sovereign. Around the world, the queen’s exceptional reign was commemorated, celebrated and debated.

Watch King Charles’ remarks in the player above.

Charles, who spent much of his 73 years preparing for the role of king, addressed a nation grieving the only British monarch most people alive today had ever known. He takes the throne in an era of uncertainty for both his country and the monarchy itself.

He spoke of his “profound sorrow” over the death of his mother, calling her an inspiration.

“That promise of lifelong service I renew to all today,” he said in the recorded, 9 1/2-minute address, delivered with a framed photo of the queen on a desk in front of him.

“As the queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I, too, now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation,” he said.

The king’s speech was broadcast on television and streamed at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where some 2,000 people attended a service of remembrance for the queen. Mourners at the service included Prime Minister Liz Truss and members of her government.

As the country began a 10-day mourning period, people around the globe gathered at British embassies to pay homage to the queen, who died Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

READ MORE: King Charles III will succeed Queen Elizabeth II. Who is next in line to take the throne?

In London and at military sites across the United Kingdom, cannons fired 96 shots in an elaborate, 16-minute salute marking each year of the queen’s life.

In Britain and across its former colonies, the widespread admiration for Elizabeth herself was occasionally mixed with scorn for the institution and the imperial history she symbolized.

On the king’s first full day of duties, Charles left Balmoral and flew to London for a meeting with Truss, appointed by the queen just two days before her death.

He arrived at Buckingham Palace, the monarch’s London home, for the first time as sovereign, emerging from the official state Bentley limousine alongside Camilla, the queen consort, to shouts from the crowd of “Well done, Charlie!” and the singing of the national anthem, now called “God Save the King.” One woman gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Under intense scrutiny and pressure to show he can be both caring and regal, Charles walked slowly past flowers heaped at the palace gates for his mother. The mood was both grieving and celebratory.

The seismic change of monarch comes at a time when many Britons are facing an energy crisis, the soaring cost of living, the war in Ukraine and the fallout from Brexit.

As the second Elizabethan Age came to a close, hundreds of people arrived through the night to grieve together outside the gates of Buckingham Palace and other royal residences, as well as British embassies worldwide. Some came simply to pause and reflect.

Finance worker Giles Cudmore said the queen had “just been a constant through everything, everything good and bad.”

At Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, mourner April Hamilton stood with her young daughter, struggling to hold back tears.

“It’s just such a momentous change that is going to happen,” she said. “I’m trying to hold it together today.”

Everyday politics was put on hold, with lawmakers paying tribute to the monarch in Parliament over two days, beginning with a special session where Truss called the queen “the nation’s greatest diplomat.”

Senior lawmakers will also take an oath to King Charles III.

Meanwhile, many sporting and cultural events were canceled as a mark of respect, and some businesses — including Selfridges department store and the Legoland amusement park — shut their doors. The Bank of England postponed its meeting by a week.

But while Elizabeth’s death portends a monumental shift for some, day-to-day life in Britain went on in other respects, with children in school and adults at work, facing concerns about inflation.

Charles, who became the monarch immediately upon his mother’s death, will be formally proclaimed king at a special ceremony Saturday. The new king is expected to tour the United Kingdom in the coming days.

The queen’s coffin will be brought to London, where she is expected to lie in state before a funeral at Westminster Abbey, expected around Sept. 19.

Elizabeth was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a symbol of constancy in a turbulent era that saw the decline of the British empire and disarray in her scandal-plagued family.

The impact of Elizabeth’s loss will be unpredictable. The public’s abiding affection for the queen had helped sustain support for the monarchy during the family scandals, including the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, but Charles does not command that kind of popularity.

“Charles can never replace her, you know,” said 31-year-old Londoner Mariam Sherwani.

Like many, she referred to Elizabeth as a grandmother figure. Others compared her to their mothers, or great-grandmothers.

But around the world, her passing revealed conflicting emotions about the nation and institutions she represented.

In Ireland, some soccer fans cheered.

In India, once the “jewel in the crown” of the British empire, entrepreneur Dhiren Singh described his own personal sadness at her death, but added, “I do not think we have any place for kings and queens in today’s world.”

For some, Elizabeth was a queen whose coronation glittered with shards of a stunning 3,106-carat diamond pulled from grim southern African mines, a monarch who inherited an empire they resented.

In the years after she became queen, tens of thousands of ethnic Kikuyu in Kenya were rounded up in camps by British colonizers under threat from the local Mau Mau rebellion. Across the continent, nations rejected British rule and chose independence in her first decade on the throne.

She led a power that at times was criticized as lecturing African nations on democracy but denying many of their citizens the visas to visit Britain and experience it firsthand.

While the global fascination with the British queen is puzzling to some, others felt a personal connection to a woman who seemed ubiquitous, from banknotes used on multiple continents to TV shows like “The Crown” — which is pausing production to honor her.

Adi Trivedi, a 33-year-old British lawyer living in Paris, called Elizabeth “a model of humility, a model of duty, taking the ego out of an office of state.” He hopes to join the mourners at Buckingham Palace soon, so that “we can really celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II together.”

Associated Press writer Cara Anna in Nairobi, Kenya, and AP journalists from around the world contributed to this report.

Watch as King Charles III delivers the annual King’s Speech on Monday, 25 December.

His Majesty delivered the second Christmas message of his reign from a Buckingham Palace room decorated with a living Christmas tree.

The King, like Queen Elizabeth II , writes his Christmas broadcasts.

He followed his mother’s well-established template last year, with a personal reflection on the year focusing on current issues with a Christian framework.

The living tree seen in today’s broadcast will be replanted in a nod to the King’s environmental interests.

It comes after he delivered a speech at the recent Cop28 UN Climate Change summit.

Charles’s message was delivered in the palace room that leads on to the royal residence’s iconic balcony, where members of the royal family have made historic appearances such as after Charles’s coronation or Trooping the Colour celebrations.

King’s Speech 2024: What time it is and how to watch

King charles iii is set to deliver his second king's speech.

Britain's King Charles III, wearing the Imperial State Crown and the Robe of State, and Britain's Queen Camilla, wearing the George IV State Diadem, prepare to depart after he read the King's speech, in the House of Lords chamber, during the State Opening of Parliament, at the Houses of Parliament, in London, on November 7, 2023. (Photo by Leon Neal / POOL / AFP) (Photo by LEON NEAL/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

Britain’s monarch will lay out the plans of a Labour Government for the first time in 14 years when Charles III delivers his King’s Speech on Wednesday .

King Charles , opening Parliament for the second time , is expected to unveil more than 35 bills as he reads out a list of policies and commitments written by the new Government.

Labour has pledged to “take the brakes off Britain”, promising that it would be focused on “unlocking growth and improving living standards for working people”

Here’s everything you need to know about what and when the King’s Speech is, including how you can watch it live.

What is the King’s Speech?

The King’s Speech is a speech written by the sitting government and delivered by the monarch, from the Houses of Parliament, to outline the Government’s plans.

How judges saved Starmer from losing control as rioters’ violence spread

How judges saved Starmer from losing control as rioters’ violence spread

The King has no role in setting this legislative agenda, he simply reads out the list on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Government.

The speech will “set out the UK government’s policy and legislative agenda for the new parliamentary session”, according to the UK Parliament website .

A parliament can last for up to five years – the maximum length of time between general elections – but new parliamentary sessions are typically launched each year.

This King’s Speech follows one written by the Conservatives in November 2023 and will be the first laying out the plans of a Labour government for 14 years.

Among its more than 35 bills there are expected to be new laws designed to protect the NHS and other public services against cyber attacks and a resurrection of plans for a smoking ban aimed at creating a smoke-free generation, as well as Labour’s plans for growth, housing, transport and democratic reform.

What time is the 2024 King’s Speech?

The 2024 King’s Speech is expected to be delivered by King Charles from about 11.30am today, Wednesday 17 July.

The King, in his state coach, will head from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament in a procession led by the Household Cavalry, arriving at the Sovereign’s Entrance at about 11.20am.

He will then don the Imperial State Crown and ceremonial robes in the Robing Room before leading the Royal Procession through the Royal Gallery to the House of Lords chamber and taking his seat on the throne, from where he’ll deliver the King’s Speech.

While there is no set time for the duration of the King’s Speech, as a point of reference the King’s first speech in November lasted around 11 and a half minutes and consisted of just over 1,200 words – making it the longest speech by a monarch at a State Opening of Parliament since 2005.

How can I watch the King’s Speech live?

The King’s Speech will be streamed live on i ‘s YouTube channel , as well as on BBC One and Sky News.

i will also bring you the latest updates through our live blog .

What happens at the State Opening of Parliament?

The State Opening of Parliament is the main ceremonial event in the parliamentary calendar and marks the formal start of the parliamentary year.

It is also the only regular occasion when the three constituent parts of Parliament – the Sovereign, the House of Lords and the House of Commons – meet.

As well as the ceremonial parade of the monarch to Parliament and their dressing for the occasion, the event is known for some unique customs, some of which date back to the 17th century.

These include an official for the House of Lords chamber, called Black Rod , being sent to summon the MPs from the House of Commons before the doors to the Commons chamber are slammed in her face – a convention dating back to the civil war, symbolising the Commons’ independence from the monarchy.

After Black Rod strikes the door three times, it is opened and the MPs and the speaker are invited into the House of Lords to listen to the King’s Speech.

Ed Balls interview with wife Yvette Cooper on GMB was a ‘terrible misjudgement’

Ed Balls interview with wife Yvette Cooper on GMB was a 'terrible misjudgement'

The Lord Chancellor, down on a bended knee, then presents the monarch with the speech, carried in a special silk bag.

Members of the House of Lords also wear appropriate ceremonial robes, while judges of the High Court of Justice wear their wigs.

Another tradition, which takes place behind the scenes of a State Opening prior to the monarch’s arrival, is a ceremonial search for explosives in the cellars of the Palace of Westminster – where Parliament is based – by the Yeomen of the Guard. That dates back to the King’s Speech in 1605, in the aftermath of the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot .

There is also a tradition held since 1649 that sees a member of the Commons – usually a government whip – temporarily “taken hostage” in Buckingham Palace. In more fractious times between parliament and the monarchy, this was done as an assurance that no harm would come to the King or Queen while they were in Westminster.

A new parliamentary session will begin after the monarch finishes delivering the speech, with MPs set to debate its contents in the Commons – typically for several days – before it is voted in.

Meanwhile, the Lords’ debates on the King’s Speech are set to take place over six days between 18 and 25 July, with each day focused on a different area of Labour’s plans.

FACT FOCUS: A look at claims made by Trump at news conference

Trump lashes out at Harris, recommits to a Sept. 10 debate at hourlong news conference

In his first news conference since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, former President Donald Trump said he would debate her on Sept. 10 and pushed for two more debates. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for more than an hour, discussing a number of issues facing the country and then taking questions from reporters. He made a number of false and misleading claims. Many of them have been made before.

Here’s a look at some of those claims.

CROWD SIZES

Image

CLAIM: “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken — I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.”

THE FACTS: Trump was comparing the crowd at his speech in front of the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the crowd that attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial.

But far more people are estimated to have been at the latter than the former.

Image

Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service . The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address.

Moreover, Trump and King did not speak in the same location. King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , which looks east toward the Washington Monument. Trump spoke at the Ellipse , a grassy area just south of the White House.

CLAIM: “Nobody was killed on Jan. 6.”

THE FACTS: That’s false. Five people died in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and its immediate aftermath. Pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol that day amid Congress’ effort to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Among the deceased are Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter shot and killed by police, and Brian Sicknick, a police officer who died the day after battling the mob. Four additional officers who responded to the riot killed themselves in the following weeks and months.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by a police officer as she climbed through a broken part of a Capitol door during the violent riot. Trump has often cited Babbitt’s death while lamenting the treatment of those who attended a rally outside the White House that day and then marched to the Capitol, many of whom fought with police.

DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION

Image

CLAIM: “The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden, and I’m no Biden fan, but I tell you what, from a constitutional standpoint, from any standpoint you look at, they took the presidency away.”

THE FACTS: There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democratic Party from making Vice President Kamala Harris its nominee. That process is determined by the Democratic National Committee.

Harris officially claimed the nomination Monday following a five-day online voting process, receiving 4,563 delegate votes out of 4,615 cast, or about 99% of participating delegates. A total of 52 delegates in 18 states cast their votes for “present,” the only other option on the ballot.

The vice president was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by the party’s deadline following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race on July 21.

THE ECONOMY

CLAIM: Suggesting things would be different if he had been in office rather than Biden: “You wouldn’t have had inflation. You wouldn’t have had any inflation because inflation was caused by their bad energy problems. Now they’ve gone back to the Trump thing because they need the votes. They’re drilling now because they had to go back because gasoline was going up to 7, 8, 9 dollars a barrel.”

THE FACTS: There would have been at least some inflation if Trump had been reelected in 2020 because many of the factors causing inflation were outside a president’s control. Prices spiked in 2021 after cooped-up Americans ramped up their spending on goods such as exercise bikes and home office furniture, overwhelming disrupted supply chains. U.S. auto companies, for example, couldn’t get enough semiconductors and had to sharply reduce production, causing new and used car prices to shoot higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 also sent gas and food prices soaring around the world, as Ukraine’s wheat exports were disrupted and many nations boycotted Russian oil and gas.

Still, under Biden, U.S. oil production reached a worldwide record level earlier this year .

Many economists, including some Democrats, say Biden’s $1.9 trillion financial support package, approved in March 2021, which provided a $1,400 stimulus check to most Americans, helped fuel inflation by ramping up demand. But it didn’t cause inflation all by itself. And Trump supported $2,000 stimulus checks in December 2020, rather than the $600 checks included in a package he signed into law in December 2020.

Prices still spiked in countries with different policies than Biden’s, such as France , Germany and the U.K. , though mostly because of the sharp increase in energy costs stemming from Russia’s invasion.

IMMIGRATION

CLAIM: “Twenty million people came over the border during the Biden-Harris administration — 20 million people — and it could be very much higher than that. Nobody really knows.”

THE FACTS: Trump’s 20 million figure is unsubstantiated at best, and he didn’t provide sources.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 7.1 million arrests for illegal crossings from Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024. That’s arrests, not people. Under pandemic-era asylum restrictions, many people crossed more than once until they succeeded because there were no legal consequences for getting turned back to Mexico. So the number of people is lower than the number of arrests.

In addition, CBP says it stopped migrants 1.1 million times at official land crossings with Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024, largely under an online appointment system to claim asylum called CBP One.

U.S. authorities also admitted nearly 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela under presidential authority if they had financial sponsors and arrived at an airport.

All told, that’s nearly 8.7 million encounters. Again, the number of people is lower due to multiple encounters for some.

There are an unknown number of people who eluded capture, known as “got-aways” in Border Patrol parlance. The Border Patrol estimates how many but doesn’t publish that number.

CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris “was the border czar 100% and all of a sudden for the last few weeks she’s not the border czar anymore.”

THE FACTS: Harris was appointed to address “root causes” of migration in Central America. That migration manifests itself in illegal crossings to the U.S., but she was not assigned to the border.

NEW YORK CASES

CLAIM: “The New York cases are totally controlled out of the Department of Justice.”

THE FACTS: Trump was referring to two cases brought against him in New York — one civil and the other criminal.

Neither has anything to do with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The civil case was initiated by a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James. In that case, Trump was ordered in February to pay a $454 million penalty for lying about his wealth for years as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to stardom and the White House.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a state-level prosecutor, brought the criminal case . In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

___ Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin and Elliot Spagat and economics writer Christopher Rugaber contributed to this article. ___

An earlier version of this story mixed up “latter” and “former” in the third paragraph. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, drew a far larger crowd than Donald Trump’s speech near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump compares January 6 crowd to MLK's 'I Have A Dream' audience: 'We had more people'

  • Trump said he drew a bigger crowd on January 6 than Martin Luther King Jr. did in 1963.
  • "My friend, we actually had more people," he said at a press conference on Thursday.
  • Trump also claimed that people "never see the picture of the crowd" on the mall that day.

Insider Today

Former President Donald Trump is comparing himself to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. — at least when it comes to crowd size.

During a freewheeling press conference at his Mar-A-Lago resort on Thursday, Trump claimed he drew a bigger crowd on January 6, 2021, than King did for his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.

"I'll tell you, it's very hard to find a picture of that crowd. You see the picture— a small number of people, relatively, going to the Capitol, but you never see the picture of the crowd," Trump said of the "Stop the Steal" rally, which he addressed before some rioters breached the Capitol. "The biggest crowd I've ever spoken — I've spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody's spoken to crowds bigger than me."

"If you look at Martin Luther King, when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people," Trump said. "They said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people. But when you look at the exact same picture, and everything's the same because it was the fountains, the whole thing all the way back to… from Lincoln to Washington. And you look at it, and you look at the picture of his crowd, my friend, we actually had more people."

Trump on his January 6 speech: "Nobody has spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours ... we had more." pic.twitter.com/i9DL82vuLg — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 8, 2024

King's speech drew an estimated 250,000 people. It remains unclear how large the "Stop the Steal" crowd was, though the Associated Press has reported that it reached 10,000 by the afternoon when the riot began.

Related stories

This isn't the first time Trump's compared his crowd sizes to MLK Jr's, or suggested the crowd he drew on January 6 exceeded that of the civil rights icon.

In June 2022, he told an audience in Tennessee that he drew a bigger crowd for his Fourth of July speech in 2020 than King did. He went on to say that the crowd he addressed on January 6 was the "largest number of people I've ever spoken to."

And crowd size has long been a fixation of Trump's.

The week he was inaugurated in 2017, he infamously claimed to have drawn a larger crowd size than President Barack Obama in 2008, leading then-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to berate reporters at his first official press briefing for not reporting that as fact.
