Perceptions and Lived Experiences: A Phenomenological Study of Technical Vocational and Livelihood Strand Students During the New Normal Education

Profile image of JEFFRY M O R I L L A SARO

2022, Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal

Education is a valuable possession in the society that people live in today, and many strive hard to acquire it. Education is essential for everyone to lead fulfilled lives. This study aimed to assess and investigate the perceptions and lived experiences of Grade 12 TVL strand students from San Luis National High School, particularly in the Senior High School Department, during the school years 2021 to 2022 of the new normal education system. The study used a qualitative type of research design, particularly a phenomenological study method approach to analyze and questions were defined by the researchers from a phenomenological standpoint in the TVL strand. The Grade 12 TV students are currently dealing with a variety of obstacles brought on by the pandemic. The viral threat is not the only problem the students are facing; they're also having academic difficulties. Based on their personal experiences, the participants turn to their fellow students to help them overcome obstacles in the new normal education system. Due to the nature of the learning environment, the students develop their support network digitally, allowing them to interact socially. On the basis of the respondents' responses, it is possible to surmise that there is a difference in the student's performance and experiences when participating in traditional learning and new normal learning. According to their responses, it may be inferred that the students preferred the traditional educational setting.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the Philippine education system, prompting the Department of Education (DepEd) to suspend classes and shift to alternative teaching methods. This study investigates the perceptions and lived experiences of Grade 12 Technical Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) strand students at Aparri East National High School during the 2022-2023 school year. Employing a qualitative, phenomenological approach, data were gathered through interviews to understand the impact of blended learning on students. Findings revealed that while students appreciated hybrid learning for its engagement and innovative teaching methods, they also faced challenges such as mental health issues, financial instability, and inequitable access to resources. These insights align with global studies emphasizing the benefits and challenges of hybrid education in the pandemic era. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive support systems to address students' financial and emotional needs and recommends continuous development of innovative pedagogical practices to foster resilience and adaptability.

A total of 85 participants were purposely and conveniently selected to participate in an electronic survey through Google Forms. Further, to qualify and clarify responses from the respondents, the researchers conducted phone call interviews. The data were evaluated qualitatively using the NVIVO software. The findings revealed that the student’s difficulties in the new normal can be summed in 10 significant themes, namely: i) Vague module content; ii) Poor internet connectivity; iii) Lack of teacher’s guidance and motivation; iv) Financial pr...

Everyone is currently in the worst predicament because of the pandemic. The coronavirus has brought attention to the world of education, making it inaccessible to everybody. Teachers are challenged with concerns about how to instruct and engage the learners amidst the pandemic. With limited studies about the means of delivering instructions in cookery, this study is made to explicate the lived experiences of teachers teaching cookery using a blended learning modality. This study used the seven-step Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of Van Kaam popularized by Moustakas, and the Heideggerian phenomenological design. To prevent bias, the researchers conducted bracketing prior to collecting the data. To conduct the interview, a semi-structured interview guide was used to interview the (5) participants from the different public schools in District VII of Central Visayas via digital format. The data gathered were evaluated, analyzed, and interpreted. The following themes were successively extracted as a result:(1) Instruction, (2) Learning Approach, and (3) Evaluation. Results showed that teaching instruction was changed to be flexible enough to adapt to the blended learning modality. While a new learning approach is made, different teaching strategies were done. Then, the evaluation of students' performance differs depending on the learning modality they are into. However, teachers continue to be optimistic in every circumstance and determine where they can best educate learners, particularly those majoring in the technical field. Moreover, this study recommends seminars and symposiums to be conducted especially on the mechanisms of teaching cookery.

Lived experiences from diverse contexts can be transformational in education. Learning science is intertwined with various experiences, which consequently strengthen the formation of a science concept, thereby increasing students' performance in school. Thus, this paper sought to explore the lived experiences of senior high school students in learning science. Based on this concept, the researchers employed the phenomenological technique of qualitative methodologies to collect complex data regarding students' experiences in science subjects in a blended learning environment and to grasp the phenomenon from their perspective. The study revealed four distinct themes in the students' lives: (1) varied experiences of students in learning the science subject during the pandemic, (2) challenges encountered, (3) coping strategies employed, and (4) resources needed in learning science. Based on the findings, the student's learning experiences were affected by the academic ex...

Blended learning cut the barriers brought by the distance between teachers and students through online and traditional teaching and learning methods. Thus, it is subjected to many challenges such as forced consideration of digital technology characteristics, which demands skills and knowledge and the improvement of the reading comprehension ability of each student. This study is intended to identify the lived experiences of the students towards blended learning amidst pandemic, specifically: (1) to describe the experiences in blended learning, (2) to describe the challenges experience on blended learning, and (3) to describe their coping mechanisms. Thus, the study utilized Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA) with ten (10) respondents from the community. Based on the study, the findings are the following: (1) Blended learning implications are mostly negative. (2) The respondents are most challenged in adopting a lesson and lacking resources. Due to the sudden changes, they resorted to adjustments, but conflicts such as not having enough sources necessary for blended learning requirements still emerged. Finally, (3) most of the respondents need to seek social support to cope with blended learning.

While established educational pathways exist in many nations, the Philippines offers a unique opportunity to investigate the development of entirely new ones. Prior to the 2010s, compulsory education only extended through grade 10, with all students on a general track. The implementation of the 2013 Enhanced Basic Education Act significantly altered this system. It extended the basic education cycle to 12 years and introduced the Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track as an alternative to the traditional academic track during the final two years. This study explores the determinants influencing the implementation of secondary TVL tracks in the Philippines, while also focusing on how stakeholders perceive its viability as a pathway to postsecondary vocational training and employment. The research draws upon Najam's (1995) "5C" framework, which posits that policy implementation is influenced by five key dimensions: content, context, commitment, capacity, and clients. This framework guides the exploration of how these factors interact and impact the realization of the TVL track. A qualitative research approach is employed, utilizing data from interviews and focus groups conducted with key stakeholders from both the K-12 and postsecondary education sectors. Additionally, a document analysis of relevant sources from government agencies is undertaken to provide further context. The findings offer valuable insights into the perceptions of stakeholders regarding the TVL track's effectiveness, challenges faced during implementation, and its potential as a viable pathway for students.
