Schemes of Work for teaching RE to all key stages

We know that planning schemes of work is a laborious and time consuming job for busy teachers, which is why we have created ready-to-use schemes made up of 35 units for Primary schools and 15 units for Secondary schools.

You can view the full list of units here .

Units include lots of teaching and learning ideas, links to useful resources, learning outcomes and assessment guidance and suggestions. Each unit offers on average eight hours of classroom ideas.

We have created these units of work to support its syllabus model A, currently in use in a number of local authorities. However, they offer a resource to support you in teaching RE wherever you are in the country, even if your syllabus is not an RE Today model.

Our Schemes of Work are a resource offering a range of ideas for your classroom. They do not supersede your agreed syllabus.

Check out our handy guide to planning with RE Today units of work to support you in deciding whether these schemes will work for you and your school.

As these are external third-party websites we are unable to remedy this. The schemes of work are not lesson plans, and do not contain PPTs alongside the content.

RE Today is not responsible for content on external websites. Links were active and correct at time of publication, but they do not always last. Please do check content etc before passing on to students/using in the classroom. Enough information is provided with links for teachers to search for a suitable alternative should links break

The scheme is not statutory; you can use as much or as little as you wish. You could use the whole scheme or individual units. The sections on 'using this scheme' and 'sequencing the units' can help you to decide how you want to use the scheme. The units are aimed at pupils who are attaining at levels that are broadly appropriate for their age. You may therefore need to adapt them to meet your pupils' needs. The 'Adapting units' section provides guidance on doing this. You may also wish to combine these units with units from another subject. The 'Combining units' section gives information on exploiting powerful links between subjects. -QCA Click to expand...

Aimed at teachers of 5 to 7 year-olds, this is a guide to planning, differentiation and assessment for primary RE. The book relies on SCAA models as a "benchmark" in providing a series of structured lessons, enabling children to explore human experiences in religion and the beliefs of six major world faiths in relation to their own. This book may stand alone or be used alongside "Religious Education Key Stage 2". References are also provided to the Scottish Guidelines for Religious and Moral Education 5-14.

Key Stages One and Two Schemes of Work - Science

A scheme of work produced as optional guidance from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to support the teaching of science at Key Stages One and Two (students aged 5-11), and intended to cover all the requirements of the 2000 National Curriculum programme of study.

Context While the scheme of work is intended to be “a comprehensive and stimulating basis for schools planning their science curriculum for 2000 and beyond”, and to “help schools improve standards” the guidance stresses that the material was optional and shows “one way that they science programme of study can be interpreted for the classroom”. It was intended for adaptation by teachers to meet students’ diverse needs.

Development The scheme was developed by QCA 'with teachers, advisers, researcher and those working in science education' – and informed by reports of good practice, research projects, and evidence from student performance in tests.

The units were written in such a way as to cover the statements of the National Curriculum programme of study. The guidance outlines expected levels of progress of most students through Years One to Six. The teaching sequences of each of the units are suggested – each unit being mapped to the programme of study statements for science (both content and scientific enquiry), and links being provided to show where the unit fits in, prior learning, health and safety, language for learning, resources and out-of-school learning. Each of the suggested teaching activities has learning objectives and outcomes, and other relevant points to note.

Components The Scheme of Work comprises 38 teaching sequences presented as units of work, named by year-group from Years One to Six:

Unit 1A Ourselves Unit 1B Growing plants Unit 1C Sorting and using materials Unit 1D Light and dark Unit 1E Pushes and pulls Unit 1F Sound and hearing Unit 2A Health and growth Unit 2B Plants and animals in the local environment Unit 2C Variation Unit 2D Grouping and changing materials Unit 2E Forces and movement Unit 2F Using electricity Unit 3A Teeth and eating Unit 3B Helping plants grow well Unit 3C Characteristics of materials Unit 3D Rocks and soils Unit 3E Magnets and springs Unit 3F Light and shadows Unit 4A Moving and growing Unit 4B Habitats Unit 4C Keeping warm Unit 4D Solids, liquids and how they can be separated Unit 4E Friction Unit 4F Circuits and conductors Unit 5_6H Enquiry in environmental and technological contexts Unit 5A Keeping healthy Unit 5B Life cycles Unit 5C Gases around us Unit 5D Changing state Unit 5E Earth, Sun and Moon Unit 5F Changing sounds Unit 6A Interdependence and adaptation Unit 6B Micro-organisms (short unit) Unit 6C More about dissolving Unit 6D Reversible and irreversible changes (short unit) Unit 6E Forces in action Unit 6F How we see things (short unit) Unit 6G Changing circuits (short unit)

CEVAP schools, academies and free schools may do so.

A new syllabus came into force from September 2023:

Where do I stand? Suffolk Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2023  | Weblink

We have recorded training to enable teachers to get to grips with the new syllabus and find out how to apply and use it successfully in their schools.  For further information, please contact Jacqui Studd .

Church of England schools in Suffolk are advised to use the Emmanuel Project scheme of work, which fulfils RE requirements for all schools, and is based on the Suffolk Agreed Syllabus.
