Sony Pictures kicked off this year’s return-to-normal CinemaCon on Monday evening as the first major studio to unveil its slate of forthcoming titles at the Las Vegas event. The studio is already the crowned king of Hollywood in 2022 thanks to the massive success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which since releasing in late December cleared $1.89 billion globally and is the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time. No small feat in a pandemic or any other time, really, and with an 88-day theatrical window, as Sony brass pointed out.
The presentation inside the Caesars Palace Colosseum is hosted by Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures president Josh Greenstein, president of international releasing Steven O’Dell, and president of domestic releasing Adrian Smith. “When I was here seven months ago, I said theatrical would triumph and indeed it has, and we did it together,” said Greenstein upon the presentation’s start, thanking AMC and Regal especially for rallying to save the theatrical experience.
Sony has a bustling slate to come with titles like this summer’s “Bullet Train,” directed by stunt coordinator and “John Wick” filmmaker David Leitch, and starring Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Brian Tyree Henry. The film opens July 29. “We made this movie for the big screen. It’s made to be seen in theaters,” Leitch said. New footage was unveiled (and well-received) in the room, with assassin Pitt walking the streets of Tokyo (in a bucket hat) readying for One Last Job.
There’s also Gina Prince-Bythewood’s period historical epic “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, “Underground Railroad” breakout Thuso Mbedu, and John Boyega. Davis plays Nanisca, the general of the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey that existed until 1904. Nicole Brown, president of Sony-owned production arm TriStar Pictures, lauded Davis’ “Woman King” as the “real-world Black Panther.”
“We were intentional of creating an ensemble of the dopest actors of this moment from all over the diaspora,” Prince-Bythewood said.
Davis, who accepted CinemaCon’s Trailblazer award onstage, cited seeing icon Cicely Tyson (who died last year) for the first time as an inspiration for her long-running and many-award-winning career. “The transformational radical power it gave me to believe in something bigger than even my world, it touched down and landed in me,” she said.
Also coming up from Sony this year is “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” the Whitney Huston biopic from “Eve’s Bayou” director Kasi Lemmons. Naomi Ackie takes on the beloved pop star in a role tipped for Oscar consideration. The film releases December 21. Similarly awards-timed is J.D. Dillard’s war epic “Devotion,” starring Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, and Joe Jonas. It opens limited on October 14. Neither of these films came up at the CinemaCon presentation, however.
Sony’s animated Marvel venture “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” may have been moved off the 2022 calendar to a June 2, 2023 release date, but expect the follow-up to the Best Animated Feature Academy Award winner to show up during the presentation with first-look footage. ( And it did! ) This is just part one, however, of a two-part sequel to the animated hit — and just the latest expansion of Sony’s own Marvel offerings adjacent to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Earlier this year, Sony released the Marvel vampire tale “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto, to mixed but not totally failed box office.)
In an ambiguous concluding reel, Sony teased that more installments in the “Ghostbusters” and “Venom” franchises are on the way, with “Venom 3” and a “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel officially greenlit.
The Sony presentation kicked off CinamaCon 2022 in earnest; the earlier portion of the day was dedicated to international markets. Monday began with a pair of keynote addresses, one by Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramírez Magaña and another from Steven O’Dell, the president of international distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. There was even a panel on gaming and eSports in the lead-up to the real deal.

Sony pops up every few months with a new showcase that highlights titles coming to PlayStation platforms. While fans were hoping for a full-fledged PlayStation Showcase this month as State of Play presentations took place in March and June, Sony decided to hold another State of Play on September 13 ahead of Tokyo Game Show to highlight games coming to PS4, PS5, and PlayStation VR2. As the June State of Play featured the likes of Street Fighter 6 , Final Fantasy XVI , and Resident Evil 4’s remake, this presentation had a lot to live up to.
Like a dragon ishin is finally coming to the west with a remake, god of war looks great and is getting a themed dualsense controller, everything else.
While it wasn’t as impressive, lasting 20 minutes and featuring 10 games, every title shown looked intriguing in its own way. In particular, we got a look at the next Tekken game and an exciting trailer for God of War: Ragnarok ahead of its release in November. This is every announcement that PlayStation made during the September 2022 State of Play.
The announcement that kicked off the show was Tekken 8. We saw some cutscenes and gameplay featuring Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, and it looks just as impactful and satisfying as ever. In a PlayStation Blog post , Katsuhiro Harada explained that this content was taken straight from the game’s story mode, and runs at 50 frames per second. It has no release date but is confirmed for PS5 .
Rya Ga Gotoku: Ishin is getting a full remake treatment. This game was released for PS3 and PS4 in the early 2010s but never came to North America or Europe as the Yakuza series was not yet popular in the West at the time. It’s now titled Like a Dragon: Ishin!, remade with Unreal Engine 4, and will be released for PS4 and PS5 in February 2023.
To wrap up the show, Sony revealed that a limited-edition DualSense wireless controller based on the next God of War game is launching on November 8 before providing a deeper look at God of War: Ragnarok . We saw more interactions between Kratos, Tyr, and Atreus, as well as some new gameplay featuring the awe-inspiring fantasy enemies and set pieces players will encounter during the game. God of War: Ragnarok launches on November 9.
Sony is off to a fairly strong start in 2024, with games like The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade, but the PS5's lineup for the back half of the year is still shrouded in mystery. Thankfully, a new State of Play stream is imminent. We're hoping that the 30-minute presentation gives us a new look at Until Dawn's remake and Firewalk Studios' multiplayer game Concord, as well as some surprises.
Although it isn't a full-blown PlayStation Showcase, it's definitely still worth tuning into for PS5 owners. If you're planning to do so, you're also probably wondering when and how to watch it. To help, we've rounded up all relevant information about the event so you can be ready when the livestream begins today. When is May 2024's State of Play? Sony has confirmed that the May 2024 State of Play presentation will start airing live today at 3 p.m. PT. According to the PlayStation Blog, it will be a "30+ minute show," so set some time aside to watch it tomorrow afternoon. How to watch May 2024's State of Play State of Play | May 30, 2024 | [English]
PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.
State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.
I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.
Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.
From cameras and ps5s to electric cars.
By Richard Lawler , a senior editor following news across tech, culture, policy, and entertainment. He joined The Verge in 2021 after several years covering news at Engadget.
During Sony’s keynote presentation at CES 2022, the company rolled out the Vision-S EV we saw last year, along with a new concept SUV dubbed Vision-S 02. But the big surprise ( this time ) is the launch of Sony Mobility , a new company that will focus on electric cars. While the tech industry has been speculating for several years on whether Apple might produce a vehicle , Sony already has a working prototype packed full of its technology, and now it’s going a step further.
Sony will establish an operating company “Sony Mobility Inc.” in the spring of 2022, through which the company intends to explore entry into the EV market.
Sony posted several demo videos on YouTube featuring both Vision-S prototype EVs. Some, like the two-minute Concept Movie above, give hints of the picture-perfect lifestyle these cars could enable. Others show off the design of the user interface or feature a test of remote driving via a 5G connection linking Tokyo and Germany in real-time.
We don’t know if this all leads to actually taking a Sony-brand car for a spin someday, but clearly, it has a vision for the autonomous, electric future that it’s pursuing. “We are exploring a commercial launch of Sony’s EV,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, the company’s chairman, president, and CEO. That exploration will apparently find out how a “creative entertainment company” can “redefine mobility.”
During last year’s reveal of the Vision-S, Sony talked a lot about its capabilities with sensors, and we’ll see how it uses that technological advantage in the car industry. In 2021, it already shared some pain with automakers in dealing with the chip shortage, whether it intends to join the party as a full-fledged competitor or some form of supplier or partner is what we, and possibly Sony, don’t know yet.
Microsoft is rebranding copilot in the most microsoft way possible, nothing is requiring employees to be in the office five days a week, elon musk says x staff can get their stock — if they prove they deserve it, starlink has a pricey new plan to stop scalpers.
Sony opened the studio presentations at CinemaCon 2022 with a victory lap. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, who energized the studio’s 2021 showcase to exhibitors by expressing a strong commitment to theatrical exclusivity , took the stage at Caesars Palace with the confidence of someone who’s been proven right. Sony has earned a whopping $3.3 billion in global box office since their last appearance in CinemaCon, only eight months back.
That success has won the studio considerable goodwill from the exhibition community, even as the studio continues to offload select titles to streaming companies like Amazon, Apple, and Netflix . The movies Sony does release under its own banner, however, do stick to longer exclusivity windows—one of the few studios to prioritize a longer runway for their films’ theatrical performance.
The studio’s 2022 presentation began with an extended look at the upcoming comedy-action caper Bullet Train (July 29). CinemaCon delegates got to see around a reel’s worth of footage from the film, getting a better sense of the title’s comic sensibility and intricate action sequences from Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. The evening continued with looks at Where the Crawdads Sing (July 15) and The Woman King (September 16), original titles the studio believes will help balance the tentpole-heavy release schedule of the coming months.
Rothman acknowledged the industry’s lack of original films over the past year, committing to bringing more original and diverse stories to the screen in the coming years. That promise won’t be at the expense of their current tentpole strategy, however, as Sony also revealed for upcoming Marvel superhero titles. We only caught a glimpse of a Venom 3 title card at the presentation, but the studio did go into detail on plans to bring a new Marvel character to the big screen. Music artist Bad Bunny was brought on stage after being announced as the star of an upcoming film based on El Muerto, the first Latin American character to lead a Marvel live action movie. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on January 12, 2024.
The most rewarding part of the evening came when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller came on stage to personally introduce around 15 minutes of advance footage of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (June 2, 2023), the first of two animated sequels coming to theaters in the years ahead. The footage screened was still in early stages of animation, but the CinemaCon crowd responded favorably to several new multiverse characters and comedy sequences from the film. The second sequel planned for release was given its official title at the event, Beyond the Spider-Verse , and will reach theaters on Easter weekend of 2024.
Sony’s presentation closed with a surprise footage reveal of the upcoming George Foreman biopic, scheduled for April 7, 2023. The sports drama has real potential to connect with sports fans—Foreman’s life story is nothing short of cinematic—but there is an even wider base of faith-based viewers who could turn out for the film if Sony plays its cards right.
Panel Sessions Emphasize Need to Reconnect with Lost Audiences
Day one of CinemaCon 2022 began with the return of International Day, a morning-long series of panels and presentations focused on theatrical exhibition outside of the North American market. Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramirez Magaña launched the event by delivering a keynote address on the pace of recovery overseas, providing a glimpse of the devastating impact the pandemic continues to have on emerging markets. The Latin American region had generated between $2.7 and $3.4 billion per year in the period between 2017 and 2019. The pandemic slashed those figures significantly; Latin America has been unable to cross $1 billion in annual box office since 2020 . That struggle is attributable to market-specific closures and policies from local governments. Cinemas in Chile and Peru, for example, remained closed for 16 and 18 months respectively.
Box office figures from Europe reveal a speedier recovery for the region. Laura Houlgatte, CEO of UNIC, the European cinema trade body, detailed the progress made by the region’s movie theaters since reopening from the pandemic. Strong results from studio tentpoles lifted key markets in Q3 and Q4 of 2021. Individual markets turned to local titles to complement the array of blockbusters on the schedule, providing much needed stability whenever Hollywood couldn’t supply films to theaters . That trend has introduced unease across the sector, a dependency on expensive studio films that puts as much pressure on distributors than it does exhibitors.
“In a world where there are fewer movies, our movies have to work on a global basis,” said Andrew Cripps, president of international distribution at Warner Bros., during an international day panel session. Additional panels on programming and marketing beyond tentpoles further addressed the matter, with a session entirely dedicated to e-sports and gaming in cinemas echoing similar observations made in a diverse programming panel earlier in the day.
Reaching audiences who have been hesitant to return to the cinema was a consistent theme throughout the day. Older moviegoers in particular have often been cited as a difficult demographic to reach since cinemas reopened. Sarah Lewthwaite, chief client officer at Movio, a moviegoing data analytics firm, noted that the conversation around re-engaging audiences shouldn’t be based on demographics, but prior consumer behavior. “The data we’re seeing tells us that someone’s past frequency [as a moviegoer] is a better indicator on their speed to return to the cinema than their demographic. If you are 50-plus and were a frequent moviegoer, you’ve already come back to the movies.”
Theatrically exclusivity was another big topic throughout the morning’s sessions, particularly in relation to preventing piracy stemming from day-and-date releases on US streaming platforms. Studios’ gold rush to capture market share in the US streaming market has come at the expense of international box office when it comes to day-and-date titles, according to Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramirez Magaña. “The day and date model is a recipe for piracy consumption and lost income, both for distributors and exhibitors alike,” said the executive during his keynote address. “The main beneficiaries from a day-and-date release model are the pirates who are given access to a pristine copy of a movie in virtually every language on day one.”
Data collected by piracy tracking site TorrentFreak reveals that the most pirated films of 2021 were all day-and-date titles. The longer a film’s exclusivity window, the longer it took for a pristine digital copy to rank among the top pirated titles of a given week. Warner Bros.’ Andrew Cripps emphasized that point, remarking that Dune ’s day-and-date release on HBOMax was a factor in having the title open in Europe 5 weeks ahead of its domestic release. Cripps was joined by Dune director Denis Villeneuve (dialing in from Budapest, where he is in production on Dune II ) in a conversation that touched on the challenges of international distribution in the post-pandemic market. Using Dune as an example, Cripps cited Villeneuve’s insistence on promoting the film as a theatrical experience despite the title’s day-and-date streaming release, a marketing campaign that helped the film earn 38 percent of its domestic box office in premium large format (PLF) screens that command higher ticket prices.
Villeneuve isn’t known to mince words when it comes to his support of the theatrical experience. The director spoke about his desire to work more closely with exhibitors in the future in ensuring his films receive a theatrical release. “I’m worried about the theatrical window getting shorter and shorter,” he said. “I’m a strong believer that the theatrical window should be as long as possible. [With a longer window,] the audience will feel that [the theatrical] experience is something precious, that it is something unique, that it is something that they cannot access soon on TV, that is something that if—he wants to be part of the conversation, of the zeitgeist—then he has to experience it in a theater.”

Former xbox exclusive is reportedly selling great on ps5, playstation stars users angered after removal of popular features, key takeaways.
Sony has revealed some of the games it will exhibit at the PlayStation booth during the upcoming 2024 iteration of Tokyo Game Show. Scheduled to take place from September 26 to September 29, PlayStation 's attendance as a general exhibitor at Tokyo Game Show 2024 is rather noteworthy, as the gaming giant was last present at the Japanese event in a similar capacity half a decade ago.
The relevance of physical gaming trade shows has diminished in recent years, especially after the 2020 pandemic. Online livestreams like State of Plays and Nintendo Directs have taken over, and E3's permanent cancellation has only driven the point home further. Even though it's one of the biggest players in the games industry, Sony's participation at third-party trade shows has waned since 2019, with the company mostly sticking to its State of Play and Showcase livestream formats to announce first-party games.
Sony's upcoming appearance at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show has plenty of rumors swirling, and more than a few of them involve FromSoftware's Bloodborne.
Therefore, it was quite surprising when PlayStation was confirmed to attend Tokyo Game Show 2024 as a general exhibitor. Since then, many PlayStation fans have wondered about the scale of game announcements that the company has planned for the event. Now, some of these plans have been confirmed in a recent post on the Japanese PlayStation.Blog website. Sony has confirmed that at least two games will be playable at the PlayStation booth, namely Astro Bot and Monster Hunter Wilds . Moreover, PlayStation will also hand out exclusive branded merchandise, such as t-shirts and keychains, to players who try out these games at its booth.
Most notably, though, the PlayStation booth will host a special segment centered around Death Stranding 2: On The Beach at Tokyo Game Show 2024 on September 29. Director Hideo Kojima and Japanese musician Daichi Miura will be in attendance to present the highly anticipated PS5 exclusive, alongside guests Kenjiro Tsuda, Nana Mizuki, Tomokazu Sugita, Shion Wakayama, and Nicolas Winding Refn. That's not all either, as Sony says it will announce details about "other playable titles and stage events" at a later date.
So far, PlayStation's exhibition at Tokyo Game Show 2024 seems to be focused on existing and announced titles rather than a full blowout with new first-party game reveals. After the lukewarm reception to the May 2024 State of Play, several fans have questioned whether Sony plans to host a PlayStation Showcase this year. Rumors of a potential September PlayStation Showcase have been floating around, but nothing official alludes to that right now.

Imaging and Analytics Solutions/Remote Communications
· Edge Analytics (REA-C1000) allows users to create video content in real time, without the need for specialized training, additional staff or equipment. When used alongside Sony’s PTZ cameras, Edge is a virtual camera operator that can elevate and capture a presentation. Additional licenses can be incorporated to enable features including handwriting extraction, PTZ auto tracking, close-up by gesture, chroma keyless CG overlay and focus area cropping.
· The SRG-X series of remote cameras, including the SRG-X400 , SRG-X120 , SRG-XP1 , and SRG-XB25 combine exceptional image quality with powerful zoom and smooth operation and can be paired with Edge Analytics to create a powerful presentation tool. Additionally, Sony will be introducing the SRG-X40UH , a new 4K 40x zoom camera with USB and UVC connections, allowing easy integration into collaboration applications.
