Staying Focused – Nehemiah 6:15-16

Nehemiah Chapter 6 recounts the extraordinary political intrigue taking place behind the scenes attempting to prevent Nehemiah and the Jews from rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem.

Nehemiah was intimidated and threatened by former political officials and even some of the Jewish leaders conspired with these former officials to have Nehemiah killed. Yet, despite all this opposition, Nehemiah was able to organize and spearhead an initiative to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem and complete the project in just fifty-two days!

The speed and success of the reconstruction project testifies to the fact that with God’s help, His people can accomplish quite amazing things!

Nehemiah remained remarkably focused on the task God had called him to do in spite of all the distraction. In fact, the more pressure that was applied to Nehemiah, the more determined and steadfast he became: “They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination” (vs. 9).

The focus on accomplishing God’s plans and purposes that Nehemiah demonstrated required that he was sure of his calling and certain that God was at work in him and through him.

When we stay focused on what God wants to do with us and through us, then He will give us the enabling power and staying power needed to accomplish our respective assignments.

“I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:13-14, NLT )

Each of us has received grace-gifts from God. And “as each has received a gift,” we are to “use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). We are given these gifts for the “progress and joy” of one another’s faith (Philippians 1:25).

Pride-Infected Gift Stewards

But we are all by sin nature selfaholics, born with an addiction to the intoxication of thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think (Romans 12:3) and others thinking more highly of us than they ought to think.

And because remaining sin still dwells in us born-again saints, we find this old addictive pride still infects our view of ourselves and others when it comes to the grace-gifts we receive from God. Rather than seeing our gifts as things we don’t at all deserve and seeing others’ gifts as merciful means of grace to us, we frequently battle sinful discontentment. We often feel that we are not as gifted as we would like to be, or that our gifts don’t receive enough recognition, or that we would prefer another set of gifts altogether, impressive gifts like So-and-So has.

How Our Gifts Bless Others and Sanctify Us

Now, this exposure of pride in us is actually part of God’s design in the distribution of gifts among his children. As God doles out these unearned gifts among us in unequal measures, it has the gracious effect of drawing pride out into the light from the murky darkness of our deceptive hearts. Every time we compare ourselves to others and either exult in feeling superior or resent in feeling inferior to them, God is inviting us to glorify him by repenting of our pride and humbling ourselves under his mighty, wise hand and trusting him to exalt us in the time and way it seems best to him (1 Peter 5:6).

“Our lives are not about pursuing our dreams.”

That makes this a glorious design! It is sheer genius. It is a two-way channel of blessing if we will embrace it. God gifts all of us in such a way that our gifts channel blessings to others by meeting various needs, and they channel the blessing of humility to us by exposing our pride and pushing us to receive God’s grace to live by God-pleasing faith (Hebrews 11:6). When this happens it produces gratitude in everyone. It’s perfect! Our gifts work to bless others and sanctify us. It’s exactly what recovering selfaholics need.

Our Gifts Are for Others’ Benefit

Back to Peter’s words: “each has received a gift” (1 Peter 4:10). This needs to land on us with appropriate weight. God wants us to know that our gifts are not an accident of genetics and experience. He knew what he was doing when he made each of us and he has intentionally given us the gifts we have in the measure we have them.

Therefore, we are stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to us. And he has entrusted them to us primarily for the benefit of others (1 Peter 4:10; Romans 12:4–6). Our gifts are not intended to be platforms where we try to gain our sense of significance from the esteem of men. Our real significance comes from God choosing us in Christ, gifting us, and deploying us in his kingdom for his purposes. There is more significance there than we can fully comprehend and appreciate. The praise of men is usually vicarious fluff.

Live Your Assignment

You are on assignment from God. This is why Paul says, “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him” (1 Corinthians 7:17). “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). You are “a bondservant of Christ” (1 Corinthians 7:22) and a steward of the gifts you have received. Others need your gifts. That’s why you have them.

“There is no higher calling for you than to be who God called you to be.”

Our lives are not about pursuing our dreams. Many of our dreams are self-exalting pride fantasies and gratuitously selfish when we really examine them. And the truth is, we rarely know what’s best for us and what will really make us happy. But our Designer knows. He knows exactly what we’re made for and how we can live the life we’ve been given to the fullest and most fruitful. If we follow him by faith, he will lead us in the most ultimately fulfilling paths — even when those paths lead through suffering and death.

So, live your assignment. Steward your gifts to the utmost for the sake of others. Aspire to be the very best and most fruitful you that you can be for God’s glory. Don’t dishonor God by devaluing the gifts he’s given you. Don’t waste valuable time grumbling about gifts you don’t have or resenting others for the gifts they do have, or even for the sinful pride they might exhibit. They’re stumbling, recovering selfaholics just like you and God knows how to graciously oppose them (1 Peter 5:5). Pray for them.

“So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God” (1 Corinthians 7:24). There is no higher calling for you than to be you, and God will reward you beyond your wildest dreams if you faithfully steward your gifts for others.

What Does The Bible Say About Focus? A Christian Study

D istraction is the nemesis of focus. We are constantly tempted to pull away from a consistent focus on Christ. As a result, we often find ourselves being tossed to and fro by the concerns of life.

Keeping focus on Christ means that we’re purposefully fading out everything that pulls us away from connecting with Him. It’s a disciplined lifestyle of choosing to see every blessing and struggle through the lens of Christ. How can we stay focused in a world of busyness?

Focus on God

“Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame” (Psalm 34:5).

Have you ever been in the company of someone who makes time with God a priority? There’s a certain radiance in their attitude, prayers, and overall outlook on life. Their investment of focusing intently on God instead of their circumstances magnifies His glory on their lives. Seek after the Lord first in your day with a precision-like focus on His presence.

Focus on eternal life

“…we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).

It’s so easy to get caught up into the cares of this world and neglect the hope we have in the next one. There’s nothing wrong with being involved and engaged in politics, work-related issues, family demands, or community concerns. Our problems arise when we let them take so much ground in our lives that we forget this place isn’t our home. Pray that God will renew an expectancy of eternal life that will release the pressure of worldly concerns.

Focus on things above

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).

At the present moment, Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of God interceding for you and everyone who belongs to Him. Many times we pray through times of difficulty and it feels like our trials will never change. Not only does the Lord motivate other believers to pray for you, Jesus our Lord is praying for you as well. Every time you pray remember that the Lord is praying along with you that God’s will be done.

Focus on the right path

“Set your heart on the right path” (Proverbs 23:19).

Every day there are different paths for us to take. We choose daily the paths of righteousness or unrighteousness. Sometimes the right path is filled with uncertainty (does God really hear my prayers?), risk (does God really want me to go this way), or potential disruption (how is this all going to work out?). Yet if we trust in the Lord…He will surely lead us to the right way. It’s our responsibility to choose the right thing even if it brings pain.

Focus on His decrees

“My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end” (Psalm 119:112).

A careful and deliberate study into God’s word will always realign our focus with His will. The scriptures can direct our attention towards the spiritual gaps. Many times our busyness hardens our hearts to the realities of our shortcomings and sinful ways. However by allowing the penetration of God’s sword (the Bible), our vision is softened and we see more clearly the way of the Lord. Study the Bible with greater diligence than any other activity of your day.

Focus our thoughts on Jesus

“Fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest” (Hebrews 3:1).

Our minds are constantly bombarded with thoughts about ourselves, work, family, friends, finances , and much more. Even when we determine to pray and study the scriptures—our minds can float away to other places rendering our time with God as fruitless. It is when we discipline our mind to focus on Jesus and what He has done in order that we may have eternal life—we are changed. Pay attention to when your thoughts wander and ask the Lord to help you discipline your mind.

Focus on grace

“Set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming” (1 Peter 1:13).

Sometimes when we have a good streak of religious activity such as serving at our church, fasting over a period of time, spending rich moments in prayer or Bible study—we can be tempted to forget about grace. We may start to feel a little proud of ourselves for being so faithful to God without focusing on how He gives the grace for us to do it. It’s God’s unmerited favor on our lives that gives us the ability to do works of righteousness. Take a moment to reflect on His rich grace on your life and give thanks to God for it.

Focus our eyes on Jesus

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (Hebrews 12:2).

As believers, we are running on the track of life towards our Savior. He is at the finishing line with a great group of witnesses on the sidelines cheering us forward. Those who run in races recognize the value of focusing on crossing that finish line. Those who are distracted by the crowds, weather, or other runners tend to lose their speed costing them the race. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus in spite of the storms and trials that want to consume our attention.

Focus…Focus…Focus

Wearing eyeglasses helps many of us see more clearly. Otherwise our world would look like a blurry mess. Focusing on the Lord instead our needs or wants takes great discipline. We must be willing to lay aside our fears, worries, or anything that seeks to drain us of hope in Christ. He knows what we need and when we must absolutely have it. Our focus should and always remain grounded in faith that God is in control. Take some time today to clean your spiritual glasses so you can see more clearly the Lord who loves you unconditionally.

7 Spiritual Keys to Fulfill Your God-Given Assignment

In today’s culture of increasing identity confusion, there is a need for believers to understand and model a healthy identity and purpose that is Christ-centered and kingdom-focused. When we know who we are, why we’re here and where we’re going, we will offer to the world a picture of what a true son and daughter of the kingdom looks like. Here are seven keys that may help start the process in learning how to know your true identity in the kingdom of God in order to fulfill your call and assignment.

1. Determine to love Jesus more than anyone or anything . Simple? Yes. Easy? No. We become what we focus on—who we focus on. As we fix our eyes on Jesus and determine to please Him above all else, our hearts and affections will be rightly placed. In order to make wise choices and determine God’s will, loving Jesus first and foremost is foundational to everything else. We will never know who we really are apart from learning who Jesus really is. We are to be a reflection of Him.

2. Walk in the fear of the Lord, not the fear of man. Once we have settled to love Jesus most, we can expect to be tested in it. The fear of the Lord keeps us faithful to His purposes even when others may misunderstand us, mock us or challenge us. Though I can walk with sensitivity towards people’s needs and perspectives, I don’t have to bow to them or change my beliefs for validation. Especially in the current atmosphere of hostility towards those who seek godly truth, we must guard ourselves from compromise at the altar of “acceptance.” Walking in a healthy fear of the Lord provides wisdom, protection and confidence in all things eternal and right.

3. Seek a reputation in heaven more than on the earth. In today’s social media, the more friends you have, the more tweets you post and the more “likes” you get, the more likely you are to draw a crowd. But getting attention is a lot different than having influence. Standing out in the crowd isn’t hard to do in our shock-driven, entertainment-saturated culture. What’s a lot more challenging is saying or doing something that will cause heaven to move on your behalf to change entire cities and even nations. Sometimes those in the secret place are changing history a lot more than those in the public eye. Seek to move heaven first and then watch the earth respond.

4. Know your spiritual gifts. You have been given a measure of spiritual gifts that have marked you from creation. The seven gifts listed in Romans 12:3-8 point to the motivations and passions your heavenly Father put within you from birth: prophesying, serving, teaching, exhorting, giving, leading and showing mercy. When you can identify your primary “motivational gift,” you can better know your strengths and weaknesses and where you best fit in the body of Christ. Though these gifts do not necessarily define who you are, they do point to what you’re good at and what will bear the most fruit in your life.

5. Know your call. Where your spiritual gifts explain your primary motivation, your calling is what you were born for, or better yet, who you were born to reach. God’s priority is always people, and our calling will be a reflection of His heart to reach someone. This may take a lifetime to fulfill, but you will know it is His call because it continues to burn in your heart, keep you up at night and never quite goes away regardless of challenges or setbacks. It will require faith and is bigger than you are, but your call is what draws your heart and inspires your journey.

6. Know your present assignment. If your life story was written as a book, your calling would be the title. Your spiritual gifts would shine in the unique writing style and illustrations. The individual chapters would highlight the various assignments throughout your journey. Specific assignments will come and go and serve to advance the kingdom, increasing the measure of grace on your life to ultimately fulfill your call. Some may seem like side roads to your destination, but all will lead to His purposes as you trust His heart in knowing how to prepare and equip you.

7. Measure your success by the fruit. Regardless of our call, gifts and assignments, the true measure of success will be in the fruit that follows us. If we are walking in the fullness of our identity, the people around us will recognize it, grow from it and encounter Christ through it. God’s grace will flow out of us and will exponentially increase in those around us. Look for disciples, not just followers. Look for reproduction, not just reputation. Look for transformation that lasts, not just a fascination that quickly fades.

Ultimately, knowing who you are is not about “finding yourself,” but losing yourself in order to find Christ. Seek to know His heart above your own and trust His plans in molding and shaping your life to be a perfect representation of Him. There won’t be any identity confusion. In the end, the world won’t see you anyway; just Him! {eoa}

ALIGNMENT FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT

TODAY’S PROPHETIC WORD

You were not only made for such a time as this, My plan for you was set in My heart before your birth, but only you can fulfill your destiny. Come into alignment for your assignment and watch your borders expand.

The Promised Land is not just an open place, it’s an assigned territory. While the Promised Land is huge, I’ll tell you right now, there are borders to it.

God Almighty will say to you, “I want you to cultivate, steward, and to fight for what I’ve given you – not for what I’ve given to someone else. You’re grown up enough now to know this is the life I’ve given you. You can take it as deep and as far as you want to, but these are the borders.”

Everything in the Promised Land is strategic. You go from a shotgun to a laser beam. He gives you an assignment. He assigns you things in the Promised Land. There is nothing random. You begin to walk in very specific things in the Promised Land and you begin to build up very specific skill sets.

In Promised Land living you have specific territory and specific assignments. That comes from Jesus Himself in the book of John.

“As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.” – John 17:18

Jesus came into the world for specific assignment. Just like He was sent into the world, you and I are sent out into the world in our Promised Land experience for a specific assignment.

So many people in the body of Christ are ineffective because they’re in the wrong assignment. Many people love God with all their heart and have no power at all. All their energy goes toward things that do not matter. But that’s not you!

You know how to fight for what matters. You have to fight for your assignment. Just look for the borders and steward what’s inside them.

Spreading scriptural holiness, christ’s assignment (luke 24:36-53; acts 1:4-9).

Our Scripture reading breaks in on the scene just after the Resurrection of Christ. The disciples were still reeling from His crucifixion and death. They heard this day that a few of Jesus’ followers had seen Him alive! You know how hard that would be to believe! The story is old so, of course, we think they should have believed it, but if it happened to you, even now—even though we know God has done something like this—if it happened to you, it would be just too shocking to believe! They hardly knew what to think.

In the midst of their consternation, Jesus appeared in the room where they were, not even having opened the door to enter. No wonder it says they were terrified, they were affrighted! They thought they were seeing a ghost! They were rubbing their eyes, backing off to the wall, thinking, “What’s going on here?”

He spoke comfortingly to them and began to explain the new developments. Things had certainly taken an unexpected turn. Not because Jesus did not tell them about it! In their minds, they had another pattern figured out, so anything that did not fit what they wanted, they just pushed it off to the side. That’s the way we learn. It’s the way we don’t learn sometimes. Whenever something new comes that we don’t know how to fit in to our thinking, we push it out of our minds. That’s what they did with Jesus’ teaching. Everything they had thought was going to happen did not work out. The worst thing imaginable happened! Jesus was killed, crucified! It was an awful, gory, bloody, gutty scene, and they were still shocked from it. And now, all of a sudden there was talk of a Resurrection!

What was Christ trying to accomplish after His Resurrection? He wanted to prepare His disciples for the work He left for them to do. He gave them directions. He showed them that He was physically resurrected from the dead. He invited them to touch Him, to handle Him, to get Him some food so He could eat it in front of them. They could see that Jesus was there bodily. But He was doing more than just telling them about the Resurrection. Because of the Resurrection, there was a whole new job ahead of them. They have got to take this story to the ends of the world, and so Jesus is preparing them for that. He gave them first of all an…

Assurance for their Faith — Believe!

He encouraged them, “Believe! Go ahead! You want some evidence? I’ll give you evidence!” I love the story of Thomas. Jesus, knew that Thomas had declared, “I will not believe unless I put my fingers in the places were the nails were and in the place where the spear pierced His side.” Now Jesus prodded him, “Go ahead. Do what you wanted. Touch Me! If you want evidence, if you want something to base your faith on, go ahead and touch Me.” Thomas just fell on his knees and worshipped, “My Lord and My God!”

They had to know what they were testifying, what they were talking about. Effective testimony can only come from conviction — being convinced about the facts, being convicted about the truth. Conviction is born only out of this kind of certainty.

The disciples had seen:

CHRIST’S WONDERFUL POWER

As with most people, the disciples noticed His miracles first. That was part of God’s strategy. Nicodemus understood. He came to Jesus and said, “I’ve seen Your miracles. I realize God is doing something here. What is Your message from God?” That’s the way these disciples had had their attention caught up because they saw His wonderful power. They realized that God was doing something marvelous in their midst. They heard –

CHRIST’S WISDOM

His profound, yet simple teaching; easy to understand, but deep enough to daze the doctors. He out-witted even the scribes and Pharisees, who were the professional interpreters of the Holy Writings. These disciples had experienced all that.

They had experienced now –

CHRIST’S RESURRECTION

The shocking, the absurd Resurrection! It’s true, and of course, it’s not absurd. Jesus assured them that everything had gone as it was planned between Him and His Father. His death was no mistake. God had not lost control of the world.

He “opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures” (Lk.24:45 NIV). I have to pray that prayer a lot! Open my mind, that I may understand the Bible. Open our minds that we can take it in! There is stuff here that is too deep for our minds. Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the Scripture, and ever afterwards when they looked back through the Old Testament, they could see Christ all over the place! The early church fathers were very strong on that point. They studied the Old Testament, and it is fascinating how many places the church fathers pointed and said, “That was Jesus; this was Jesus! He was right there. He’s all through the Scriptures.” This is not a new God. He is the same Jehovah-God, who has been relating to Israel for hundreds of years!

Jesus appeared to His disciples quite a number of times. We have at least 11 showings of Christ over a period of 40 days, giving them “many convincing proofs that He was alive” (Acts 1:3) and speaking of the kingdom of God.

Now He was getting ready to leave. He told them in John 14, 15, and 16, “It is expedient for you that I go away. If I do not go away, you’ll never grow up. If I do not go away, you’ll never have the full ministry of the Spirit. If I do not go away, you will always be limited. But if I go away, it will be better for you, because then the Holy Spirit will be with you.” We think, “No, I’d rather have Jesus right here so I can ask Him all these questions that I don’t have answers to and that did not make it into His book!” But He said, “It is better for you to have the ministry of the Holy Spirit.”

CHRIST’S PERSON

As they had witnessed Christ’s Person, His supernatural Person, as they had put all of this together, they were increasingly and deeply convinced that Jesus is the Son of God. And now they had just come through a really difficult time, and Jesus gave them Assurance for their Faith.

He did something more, He gave them –

Adjustment of their Focus — Look on Christ!

He directed them to look at Himself! Not like He is egotistical, but He instructed them where their attention needed to be. He clearly defined their –

“This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem” (Lk.24:46-47, NIV).

They had read the Scriptures before, but they could never see that the Messiah was to be killed. It’s there, once you go back into the Old Testament, understanding what happened to Jesus. Even today, there are Jews, who when you read Isaiah 53 to them, will declare, “You’re not reading out of my Bible. You are reading out of the Christian’s Bible. That’s not in my Bible!” But it is in their Bible! The prediction of the suffering and crucifixion of Christ in Psalm 22 is a detailed description of crucifixion, written long before the horrible way to execute people was invented. God was working all through those centuries to bring about His salvation, and Christ said, “There is no mistake here. I am the fulfillment of all those prophecies. Everything is right on track. Now, let me Adjust your Focus! Come to realize that God is willing to forgive people all over the world!”

He turned their attention away from the temple sacrifices, away from the nation of Israel, away from the ceremonial covenant with Abraham and his physical descendants. He focused their eyes on the spiritual realities He had brought — repentance from sin, forgiveness of sins, the true inward and spiritual significance of the Old Testament covenant.

He turned the lights on, helped them to understand, and put responsibility on them.

RESPONSIBILITY

He taught them their responsibility to carry on the work He had begun. “You are witnesses of these things — You know it first hand, now go spread this message everywhere!”

What is awesome is that the writing of the New Testament is the recording of their witnessing in such precise documentation that we have solid ground to stand on to this day! The Bible is the Word of God preserving that witness of what His Son did.

Jesus laid on them the responsibility of getting the Word out!

Someone raised the question of a literal kingdom and Jesus’ Second Coming. “Lord, is this the time when You will restore the Kingdom to Israel? Is this the time for the end of the world?” They had their prophecy calendar together. Funny thing about it was, Jesus did not fit their prophecy calendar. That’s why some of the people refused to believe in Jesus. The disciples realized they had been mistaken about what was going to happen, but now they knew what had transpired and they chose to believe! He redirected their attention to what was on His mind, and He gave them an –

Appointment for their Fulness — Seek!

“I am going to send you what My Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (Lk.24:48-49, NIV).

Christ makes no reference in this scene to their failure in forsaking Him during His suffering. He has already taken care of that in other conversations. We have at least one where Jesus dealt with Peter about his failure. But they could not bear a scolding now. The time for that was past. They need to have an Appointment for their Fulness, so He urges them to seek.

“Tarry in the city!” Stay in the city –

“Until ye be endued with power from on high”! He sends them back to the city to seek and to wait, but God does the filling.

Power for service and power for purity!

In this passage, Jesus speaks of being “clothed” with Power, but elsewhere Scripture also speaks of our being “cleansed,” in reference to Purity. We need to emphasize both aspects of what God does for us in that second, further work. People tend to major on one or the other. Those who major on power often grow careless about the purity. They are focused on the more exciting shows of power. The more exciting the events they can achieve, the better it proves they’ve got the power! But others say, “No, we don’t want to go off on this power stuff and the strange things that can happen there.” They focus on purity and some of them tend to sink into a small-souled pessimism that sees little accomplished for God. Jesus intended that we keep both in balance — Power for Service and Power for Purity!

Later, Peter, looking back, explained what happened on the day of Pentecost, he testified, “Here is what happened. The Holy Spirit purified our hearts by faith” (Acts 15:8-9). It was the same experience with a slightly different emphasis — endued with power and purified by faith!

This power is Can-Do power, ( dunamis — ability, strength, capacity) to live in such a way that both word and deed glorify God before our fellowman. Power to deliver the message. But the power is not for a show. The world is always out to see a show, and sometimes God does spectacular things, but at other times He works in quieter ways. Either way, He is still at work. Throughout His own ministry, Jesus steadfastly resisted the temptation to make His miracles just a show, just to attract people to see something exciting. The power is for the glory of God on our lives so that others will come to know and love the same Savior we worship.

A mouth that proclaims holy truth, but that is not backed by a holy life is the mouth of a hypocrite! God requires no less a standard than “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (I Pet.1:16). Out of a pure heart comes a powerful witness.

The power could only come as they were filled with the Holy Spirit. That fulness can also be described as a fulness or perfection in love.

Christ’s will is that we preach this message with a heart all aflame with Divine Love. He gave them an Appointment for their Fulness. He also gave them an –

Assignment for their Future — Go!

“You shall be witnesses unto Me … Jerusalem Judea Samaria Uttermost parts of the earth”

“Go ye into all the world….” There is an imploring Go in Gospel! Jesus thrust them into the work for Him. It was far bigger than anything they had ever imagined. Yes, the psalmist had sung about letting the heathen know, but Israel had never gotten into really big, powerful moves, with people getting converted or coming to God. Now something new was going to happen! It was so new it shocked the church. Throughout the book of Acts, you usually do not see them planning and strategizing missions. They were trying to keep up with what God was already doing. They were shocked! “You know what? God is saving people without making Jews out of them!” It was a shocking development to them! “We know they are saved! How do we explain that? What shall we do?” They ran to the Scriptures. They recalled the teachings of Jesus. They argued and debated. They tried to figure out, “What is God doing?”

There is this Go in the Gospel!

As Jesus approached the time of leaving His earthly ministry, Jesus repeatedly stressed that He wanted His disciples to carry the message to the entire world. On four different occasions He inculcated His passion. In Luke 24:36-53, Luke recorded two separate occasions — one on the day of his Resurrection, the other on the day of His Ascension. As Jesus prepared to leave, some of the last words that He spoke to them were about their being a witness. He urged the Great Commission time after time! I wonder if He actually talked with them about it more than four times, but we have at least four occasions recorded where Jesus presses them, “Go Tell Everyone!” Jesus’ last Commission should be our first concern.

Jesus concentrated on preparing His disciples for the job ahead. He had to give…

Assurance for their Faith – He knew they needed help for their faith. If you are struggling in your faith, come back to Jesus because He will give you strength and reason to believe.

Adjustment for their Focus – They wanted to construct a prophecy chart. Who would know more about the future and what God was going to do than Jesus Himself? We’d better ask Him before He leaves. But He shut down the conversation. “It is not for you to know.” Every time big world events take place, especially when they concern Israel, people adjust their prophecy chart so they can explain it and let people know what will be next. The big deal is to get people saved, to let them know about Jesus, to tell them He already knows what will happen, and to assure them that Jesus has all the power necessary to give them victory over sin and take them all the way to heaven!

Appointment for their Fulness – I want you to tarry until ye be endued with power from on high!

Assignment for their Future – What He spoke to the disciples is just as appropriate for us today. He wants us to find every person who doesn’t know and tell him or her about Jesus! His will has never changed! We are to be ever at the job of getting people reached because that Go is still on the heart of God!

When God Has An Assignment On Your Life You Can’T Hang With Everybody

Have you ever felt like you’re on a different path than some of your friends or that you need to pull away from certain relationships in order to pursue God’s calling for your life? This is a common tension believers face when maturing in their faith.

In this detailed guide, we’ll explore why you may need to limit interactions with certain people when God gives you a special assignment to fulfill His greater purposes.

If you’re short on time, here’s the quick answer to why you can’t hang with everybody when God has an assignment on your life: Your assignments from God require focus, wisdom and often sacrifice . Not everyone in your life will understand or support these callings, which can hinder your ability to wholeheartedly pursue your kingdom purpose.

Understanding Why God Assigns Special Purposes to Specific People

We are each called to play unique roles in god’s plan.

As children of God, we each have a special purpose and calling that only we can fulfill (Jeremiah 29:11). Our creator has intricately designed us with specific gifts, talents, personalities, and experiences to carry out unique roles in His great plan.

Just as parts of the human body work together, with each playing vital roles, so too are we parts of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). The eye sees while the ear hears. Similarly, one is gifted at teaching while another has the mercy to care for the sick.

Our diversity and differences enable us to complement each other.

Focus is Required to Fulfill God’s Special Callings

Fulfilling God’s special assignments requires undivided attention and focus on hearing His voice. We must block out distractions and “tune out” other voices calling us in different directions (Matthew 13:22).

Seasons of separation unto God are often needed to discern our assignments without outside influence.

Jesus himself modeled this laser focus during His earthly ministry. Though crowded and busy, He maintained connection with the Father and walked in step with His will (John 5:19). We too must fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Our Assignments Require Us to Be Set Apart for a Season

There are biblical precedents showing those with special callings on their lives experienced periods of separation from others. Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness before returning to deliver the Israelites from Egypt (Exodus 7:7).

Paul, after his radical conversion, went to Arabia for three years before starting his missionary journeys (Galatians 1:15-18).

Similarly, fulfilling our Kingdom assignments may require seasons of relative isolation to receive needed preparation, wisdom and anointing from God. During these seasons, many relationships and activities that previously occupied our time may need to be laid down for a period to fully focus on God’s plans.

Examining Biblical Examples of Assignments Requiring Separation

Joseph: betrayed by his brothers while fulfilling god’s purpose.

Joseph received a vision from God that he would one day rule over his brothers (Genesis 37:5-11). However, his bothers became jealous and sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt (Genesis 37:12-36). Joseph was thus isolated and betrayed by his own family while walking in his divine assignment .

Yet later, Joseph was elevated to become second-in-command to Pharaoh and helped save Egypt and his family from famine (Genesis 41:37-57). As evidenced in Joseph’s story, carrying out God’s will can sometimes require painful separation from those closest to us.

Moses: Isolated in the Desert to Prepare Him

Moses spent 40 years in isolation in the desert before returning to Egypt to deliver the Israelites from bondage (Exodus 2:11-3:10). This extended time alone was necessary for God to shape Moses into the leader needed for this immense task.

Similarly, seasons of solitude are often required for God to equip us without distractions. As noted on BibleStudyTools.com , God used Moses’ desert isolation to teach him vital lessons in patience, faith and self-control.

Jesus: Tempted in the Wilderness Before Public Ministry

Before launching His earthly ministry, Jesus spent 40 days fasting alone in the Judean wilderness where He was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). This bleak seclusion and temptation prepared Christ for the trials and testing He would face in public ministry.

We too should expect that embracing a God-given assignment may lead us through a spiritual wilderness of isolation and temptation prior to releasing us into greater influence.

Paul: Received Reveled Truth in Arabia Before Joining Disciples

The Apostle Paul spent three years in the Arabian desert after his Damascus road conversion before joining the disciples in Jerusalem (Galatians 1:11-24). As noted on GotQuestions.org , Paul likely used this desert retreat to receive direct revelation from Christ about the Gospel message he would carry to the Gentiles.

Once again, isolation and solitary retreat played a key role in preparing someone for an assignment of great consequence.

Why Those Closest to You May Not Understand Your Assignment

When God gives us a special assignment or calling in life, it’s easy to assume that our closest friends and family will be supportive. After all, they know us best and want what’s good for us, right? Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Here are a few reasons why those closest to you may struggle to understand or embrace the assignment God has placed on your life:

They Have Not Shared Your Encounter with God

If your friends and family have not had the same kind of divine encounter and calling from God that you have experienced, it may be hard for them to fully grasp it. They don’t have that personal relationship with God guiding them, so your calling could seem abstract or confusing.

Give them grace if they don’t immediately “get it.”

Their Support May Enable Counterproductive Patterns

Sometimes, our family and friends support us in ways that actually hinder our growth and purpose. For example, a parent may want to protect you from challenges God wants you to face. Or a spouse may prefer the comfort of the status quo rather than supporting a bold calling that requires sacrifice.

Their intentions are good, but their support contradicts God’s purposes.

Pursuing Earthly Rewards Does Not Align with Eternal Purposes

Many of those closest to us are consumed by pursuing worldly success, pleasures, or comfort. Your calling may threaten their preferred lifestyle or values. For example, a business owner may not understand why you left a lucrative career to begin an unprofitable ministry.

Your eyes are fixed on treasure in heaven, not on earthly rewards.

Rather than judge those close to you, offer grace and understanding. Avoid defensiveness and arguments. Over time, as you walk faithfully with God, He can change hearts and open eyes. Some may eventually become your biggest encouragers!

Until then, rest in the knowledge that God assigns us to special purposes which the world may not comprehend, but His wisdom and grace is sufficient.

Setting Healthy Boundaries to Protect God-Given Assignments

Be selective about who you share with.

When embarking on a God-given assignment or purpose, it’s crucial to be discerning about who you share details with. Not everyone will celebrate the calling on your life. Some may discourages or drain your enthusiasm with their doubts or negative words (See Gideon’s story in Judges 6).

Be led by the Holy Spirit regarding who needs to know specific details. As Jesus said in Matthew 7:6, don’t cast your pearls before swine or give dogs what is sacred.

There’s wisdom in keeping some details private until the appointed time. Consider telling only a small, trusted circle of encouragers who will cover your assignment in prayer and speak life and victory over it. Limit oversharing on social media where scoffers and critics have access.

Limit Time with Those Who Drain Your Focus

It’s admirable to try helping and fixing everyone, but that can easily divert you from what God wants you to uniquely accomplish. You might need to limit interactions with friends or family members who are perpetually negative, draining or distracting.

Set healthy boundaries and limits with them. Politely decline get-togethers that usually veer into vent sessions. Say “no” to nonessential requests for your time and energy. Don’t feel guilty about guarding your anointing, gifts, calling and assignment from the Lord.

He wants you to bear lasting spiritual fruit (See John 15:16 ).

Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Kingdom Builders

God often connects us with specific people to mutually encourage our kingdom purposes. Seek out and unite with Christians who share your values and aspirations – perhaps in a small group, ministry team or informal mentoring relationships (see Proverbs 27:17 ).

Discuss ideas, pray together, collaborate on projects. Brainstorm ways to spread the Gospel, make disciples and transform communities. As iron sharpens iron, you’ll inspire each other to grow, improve skills, overcome obstacles and walk in divine destiny.

Staying Rooted in the Vine While Fulfilling Your Purpose

Guard against self-reliance and pride.

It’s easy to rely on our own talents and become prideful when God blesses us. However, we must remember that all good things come from God (James 1:17). If we think success comes from ourselves alone, we essentially push God out of His rightful place in our lives.

Proverbs 16:18 warns that “Pride goes before disaster, and haughtiness before a fall.” This sin threatens those fulfilling their God-given purpose. After experiencing some success in ministry, it’s crucial to give all glory to the Lord for enabling us (1 Corinthians 15:10).

As Jesus said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine” (John 15:4) . We rely on His life-giving power flowing through us.

Submit Your Desires Daily to God

As Christ’s disciples, we daily surrender our own desires and accept God’s will. Jesus practiced complete submission when He prayed in Luke 22:42, “ Father, if You are willing, take this cup of suffering away from Me.

Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine .” This models the humility we need in fulfilling God’s calling.

Rather than asserting our plans, we pray “not my will but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Our desires may sometimes align with His purpose for our lives. Other times, He calls us to sacrifice comfortable things. But we can trust that His way is best and will bear eternal fruit.

Remember Your True Value Comes from Christ

Knowing our true identity in Christ protects against pride. All value and significance come from Him rather than worldly applause. Ephesians 1:4 declares, “God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” Out of His great mercy and love, He saved us and called us to participate in His glorious plans.

We contribute nothing apart from Christ’s enablement . As Galatians 2:20 says, “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Everything we accomplish comes by His Spirit’s power from beginning to end.

When God puts a special assignment on your life, you often have to make sacrifices relationally and practically to stay focused on fulfilling your purpose. As we’ve explored, both Scripture and modern examples show that isolation, hardship and lack of support often accompany unique callings.

While this tension can be painful, we must remember that our identity lies in Christ – not the approval of others or worldly affirmation. Staying rooted in God’s love gives us the strength and discernment needed to set healthy boundaries and finish the race marked out for us.

At this time, do you think or believe that God has given you an assignment? If so, what is it? Are you preparing for it? And in what ways? That’s what I’m going to help you focus on this week from a biblical and practical perspective. So, let’s get started.

For starters, there were many in the Bible we can quickly trace back to such as Noah who was given the assignment of building the ark. Moses who was given the huge task of leading millions of the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Joshua who was given the torch to bring them into the Promised Land. Esther who was chosen to be a queen for such a time to save her people from annihilation. Nehemiah who was heavily passionate and burdened with the task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. And the disciples, as well as the Apostle Paul with carrying out the Great Commission to all the nations and spreading the gospel ( we also have this assignment).

So, has God given you any assignments?

As I thought and prayed about this post, the Lord impressed upon my heart to write specifically about understanding the importance of assignments, who they affect, how we should prepare ourselves for them, and why we do them in the first place. Before I go deeper, just know that any assignment God gives you should be taken seriously and with a confident trust that He will show up and be there to help and lead you by His Spirit. And guess what, no matter what it looks like or how it turns out in your eyes, God’s plans never fail. Remember that.

When you look back at his track record - the ark was built. Moses did lead the people out of Egypt. Joshua successfully lead them into the Promised Land. Esther boldly saved her people from annihilation. Nehemiah and his team did finish rebuilding the wall. The disciples, as well as the Apostle Paul kept the faith and finished the race at all cost. Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:1-2, “I, Paul, am on special assignment for Christ, carrying out God’s plan laid out in the message of life by Jesus.” (MSG). Amen! You see, in all of these successfully completed assignments, God’s plan prevailed.

So, when God gives you an assignment, it’s very important to stay close to Him through prayer and His word for direction. He may even send Spirit-led messengers, volunteers, or instruct you to create a team to assist you. The key is following His divine provision step by step. Trust me. He knows how to get the job done, successfully .

And listen. In your lifetime sis, there will be many assignments given. If you’re a mother, you have the assignment of not only nurturing your kid or kids, but also teaching and training them godly ways and the Word. If you’re a wife, you have the assignment of being a loving, respectful and submissive wife who comes alongside her husband to help him fulfill his God-given assignment. You two are a team.

But also, if you work on the job, you’ll have many natural assignments. You’ll also have the task of being a light even on the dark or hard days. Your co-workers or fellow co-laborers will need encouragement by you and to see Jesus working through you by the way you carry yourself as a Christian. And you and I both have the assignment of helping to fulfill the Great Commission.

Assignments come in big and small packages. Our job is to unwrap them, accept them, and trust that our good Lord will help us carry them out well with the gifts He has so graciously given to us by His Spirit.

So lastly, I’ll ask one more time. Do you have a God-given assignment? Do you have something that you need to work on specifically this week? If so, prepare yourself accordingly. Break out a pen and pad, and start writing ideas down. Or open up a fresh screen on your computer and do some research about how to do what it is that you need to do. Make a list. Plan your week out early. Ultimately, you and God know what it all entails to get the job done and to get it done right and on time.

Don’t forget to pray, watch for His direction, listen for His voice and messengers, and be diligent in working towards completing your assignment. And make sure to give Him all the glory when it’s all said and done. I echo the words of the Apostle Paul from Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved. So let’s be ready from the Inside Out !

On the other hand, Forgiveness is not a feeling, it’s a decision, a choice, a crisis of the will. Hold on to this, “Nobody heals in order to forgive; they forgive in order to heal.”

Illustration, As authority becomes precedent, Authority flows down, and removes all sediment and debris.

Remember this, authority rules in the spirit. As Christians believe, and practice their God-given authority, life advances.

Nothing has the ability to hold back a Christian that believes!

“I believe we live in a day of unbelieving Christians.” PH

Authority cannot be recognized, saturated with un-forgiveness, and bitterness:

Luke 17:1-4 NLT One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting! 2 It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin. 3 So watch yourselves! “If another believer sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive. 4 Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.”

Listen Saints, the millstone had your name on it, my name on it, because we’re all tempted and been tempted. -But Jesus!

You might say, where is Justice? It is in the cross. Jesus Christ died for your sins, her sins and his sins, and everyone else’s sins.

Without the cross, forgiveness isn’t possible.

Someone once said, the cross is the sternest rebuke to mankind‘s selfishness this world will ever see.

19th century, Scottish author, George McDonnell said, that man is perfect in faith, who can come to God in the utter dearth of his feelings and desires, without a glow or an aspiration, with the weight of the low thoughts, failures, neglects, and wandering forgetfulness, and say to him, “thou art my refuge.”

We limit God with our doubts, unbelief and un-forgiveness. Scripture says of Israel in, Psalm 78:14 Yes, again and again, they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

Unbelief, and un-forgiveness, limit the Holy One. -Notice, Israel murmured. Murmuring is always connected to unbelief, and unbelief bloats and crowds out all God given authority.

Israel murmured continually, is God able? Sure, he made a way for us through the Red Sea, but can He give us bread? God gave them bread. But can He give us water? God gave them water from a rock. But can God give us meat? God gave them meat from the sky. But can He deliver us from our enemies? Time and time again, God provided and delivered in every area.

Yes, Israel, God’s people spent 40 years crying, “Can God…? Can God…?”

Beloved, we ought to be proclaiming, “God can, and He will do all that we ask and believe Him for. -Our God is faithful.”

When we understand, God's faithfulness, In return, we become faithful. God's love is steadfast. Unending. God’s love is eternal along with the other 8 fruit of the Spirit.

The apostles Paul states a strong fact this way:

1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

In Galatians, chapter 5, we can read of the 9 fruit of the spirit.

This is what we need to know. These fruit, these powerful characteristics are eternal.

And when walked in, give each believer powerful authority!

Galatians 5:22-23 NLT But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Un-forgiveness rottens fruit. Un-forgiveness makes ‘one’ turn inward. Wrong perceptions, wrong thoughts, wrong motives, cynicism and pessimism mixed with unfaithful lips, wild imaginations, strongholds develop castles and fortresses.

Paul wrote about strongholds in the mind: 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NLT We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

As believers, we think of, Philippians 4:8 . Whatever is good, lovely, brings a good report.

In an army, who has the most authority? The General.

-The General submits to no other rank, but exercises authority over every other rank.

Now, who in an army has the least rank? The Private.

-The private is the opposite. He submits to all other ranks and exercises no authority over any other.

This thought came to me, When does the Private have the same authority as the General? Never?

6 Scriptures for When You Lose Your Focus

This week it happened again. One thing after another stole my attention. I allowed unwanted distraction to disrupt my days, fretting over situations out of my control. Distractions turned to frustrations, and soon I was living in survival mode instead of living with peace and confidence.

Distraction is a tactic of the enemy, who loves to interfere with the lives of faith-filled women. Keeping us busy and focused on other things, so we lose focus on what matters most.

We have responsibilities that demand our time and energy. Those responsibilities can overwhelm us and lead to exhaustion if we forget to keep our focus on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2) When we’re buried under the weight of life’s difficulties, distraction seems to come at us from every direction. In those times we need to refocus our hearts and minds on Christ.

We know God called us to love and care for our people. Our families, friends, and neighbors. We also want to keep connected to Him through prayer and worship. So how do we stay focused as women of God with all the things going on in our lives and in the world around us?

God’s Word offers comfort and encouragement to bring Him back into focus and bring us out of survival mode. Here are 6 scriptures for when we lose focus. Each of these verses will strengthen us and provide renewed peace in the midst of life’s demands.

1. For Focusing Our Daily Thoughts

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

I love making lists. Writing helps me prioritize what needs to be done and remember those things I might forget. (Which happens more often than I’d like to admit.) As a wife and mom, list-making is a vital part of my routine! That’s why I appreciate Paul’s Holy Spirit -inspired advice to the Philippians. He knew the struggles they’d face and that they would need this list of words to help them stay focused.

Philippians 4:8 can serve as a guide for focusing our daily thoughts. The CEB version puts it this way, “...focus your thoughts on these things.” Paul gives a menu of 8 attributes in this one sentence. A perfect list of good things to keep our thoughts in the right place.

Things that are: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

Let’s apply the ideas Paul spoke and see what a difference this verse will make. When my teen rebels? Focus on what is true. When family members can’t get along? Focus on what is praiseworthy. When I’m feeling discouraged about the future? Focus on what is lovely.

Thinking on the right things ushers us into a new place of contentment. A change that begins in our own daily thoughts and overflows to our homes and the people we love.

2. For Focusing Our Perspective

“...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith . For the joy set before him he endured the cross , scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2

It’s hard to keep an eternal perspective with all the struggles we face today. In the middle of family stress or raising kids through challenging stages, we place a burden on ourselves to solve problems that pop up without warning.

We may question our abilities when we don’t have all the answers. Or we may even feel like we’re failing our families.

But God never intended us to carry that burden. In our weakness, He is strong.

Jesus said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” ( 2 Corinthians 12:9 ). So we can rely on Him to be present in our current circumstances and know He is working all things together for our good ( Romans 8:28 ).

When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we reset our perspective on God’s greater plan. Daily struggles lose their power when we know the ultimate goal. We will one day join Christ in our heavenly home. What an awesome promise that is!

So if the trials you woke up facing this morning have drawn your focus away from God’s promise of eternal life with Him, remember to fix your eyes on our Savior. He's the one that will perfect your faith. Our perspective can reach beyond this world!

3. For Focusing Our Hearts in Prayer

“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

I’ve been known to get quiet when things happen and I don’t know how to respond. My husband may even mistake my silence for irritation. He’ll ask, “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” But the truth is, I just need time to process. Especially when situations arise that leave me completely dumbfounded.

Women throughout history have been good processors. Even Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart” after the shepherds came to witness the baby Jesus . ( Luke 2:19 ESV) Mary stored precious memories that would bring comfort through the most difficult moments of her life.

We invite things into our hearts for different reasons. Maybe like Mary, we have a moment we want to cherish. But there are also trials and circumstances that bring us to tears. Things we need to process before we know what to do next.

Processing is good. It gives us time to seek God and decide the best response. But we need to be careful about giving frustration or discouragement a safe place in our hearts. When we treasure something, we give it a temporary home. That’s why the meditations of our hearts need to be pleasing to God.

When we keep Jesus at the center of our hearts, peace and gratitude take up residence there. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...” ( Colossians 3:15 ) Whether we’re meditating on precious moments or heartbreaking situations, praying the words of Psalm 19:14 will help us keep our hearts filled with the good things of God.

4. For Focusing Our Minds

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2

No one understands the draw of temptation like a mom making her way through the grocery checkout line with toddler in tow. Why must they place all those irresistible treats right where little hands can reach them? And once a child locks on to something they want, the battle begins.

I can be a lot like a toddler in a checkout line when it comes to all the shiny things I see in media! Ads for must-have items flash before me on social media, TV, and anywhere else they can grab my attention. They promise things that will make my life easier. Things that will take away hurt and offer comfort.

But what they don’t disclose is, those must-haves only provide a temporary fix.

2 Corinthians 4:18 confirms the back-and forth battle with earthly things. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

The best weapon against thinking we can’t live without that tempting treat is to focus on things above.

Colossians 3:2 will help us “set our minds on things above, not on earthly things” as we maneuver through life’s temptations. Refocusing our minds can begin with the remarkable power of this verse.

When we keep our eyes on what is eternal, we can snap back to reality of what is actually most important as we go through our days.

5. For Focusing to Regain Hope

“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.” Jonah 2:7

The familiar story of Jonah has astounded kids for generations. A man surviving being swallowed by a whale? What a miracle! Many of us remember reading a book or listening to a Sunday school teacher share Jonah’s story. But Jonah’s prayer from inside the whale can inspire us with renewed hope as women, too.

We’re hard-pressed to find any good news lately. Disease, grief, loss, turmoil. We try our best to do good, love others, and walk humbly. But listening to what’s happening in our world can send us into despair and hopelessness.

Jonah’s prayer shows us that hope is ours, even in our most desperate times. “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me” ( Jonah 2:1 ). Deep waters threatened to engulf him, but he remembered God. “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple” ( Jonah 2:7 ).

Let’s allow Jonah’s prayer to inspire us toward new hope. Do you feel hope slipping away? Do current circumstances leave you wondering if your efforts are worth it? Jesus Christ is hope, and with Him we have reason to never give up.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” ( 1 Peter 1:3 ).

6. For Focusing on Our Purpose

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Losing my focus makes me feel like God is far away. Like I can’t hear His voice or sense His presence. Staying in a constant attitude of prayer puts blinders of protection around our focus, keeping distraction out and God’s promises in.

So how do we keep those blinders in place? The best thing we can do when we lose focus is to seek Him. All through the day, every day.

Jeremiah wrote this in his letter to the exiles, so they would stay encouraged as they waited for the day they’d return to what God promised. God encouraged them through the prophet, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” His promise would inspire them to focus on their purpose.

We have a great purpose right where we are. In the dishes we washed this morning, we have purpose. In the kids arguing in the other room, we have purpose. In our family gatherings, meetings at work, and all the things that pull us in different directions. God will fulfill His promises in our lives. We can count on it, and while we wait we can trust His plan in every step.

Learning to focus on the goodness and promises of our Heavenly Father will ensure we leave survival mode behind and walk in victory instead. May we all fix our eyes, seek Him, and never lose hope. May we move forward with purpose, refreshed and refocused on God.

Fact-checking Kamala Harris on Project 2025 limiting access to IVF, contraception

If your time is short.

Project 2025, the 900-page conservative manual for the next Republican administration, doesn’t specifically recommend restrictions to in vitro fertilization, or IVF.

The manual also doesn’t call for restricting standard contraceptive methods, such as birth control pills or intrauterine devices. It does recommend restricting some emergency contraceptives from no-cost insurance coverage and defunding Planned Parenthood.

The document also has language that supports rights for fetuses and embryos, which legal experts said threatens family planning methods, including IVF and some forms of contraception.

Democrats continue to issue grave warnings about Project 2025, a 900-page policy playbook for the next Republican administration. They say the manual , authored by the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank and co-written by more than 100 groups, is a blueprint for a second Donald Trump presidency. Although Trump isn’t involved in Project 2025, and has tried to distance himself from it, about 140 of his former advisers have contributed to it. Trump on the campaign trail has most recently said that states, not the federal government, should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives or IVF .

In a July 18 campaign event in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats’ presumptive presidential nominee, warned that Project 2025 would take away more reproductive health care from Americans. She also highlighted that Trump didn’t mention the plan during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Harris told the crowd that Trump didn’t talk about Project 2025 because "their plans are extreme and they are divisive."

"You cannot claim you stand for unity if you are intent on taking reproductive freedoms from the people of America and the women of America — trying to ban abortion nationwide, as they do, and restrict access to IVF and contraception, as their plan calls for," she said.

The plan doesn’t outright call for banning abortion nationwide. However, it makes several recommendations that could greatly limit how abortions are performed in the U.S., particularly by curtailing medication abortion and the mailing of abortion-related materials.

But does the plan actually call to restrict in vitro fertilization, known as IVF, and contraception?

PolitiFact did not find any mention of IVF throughout the document, or specific recommendations to curtail the practice in the U.S. The manual doesn’t outright call for restricting standard contraceptive methods, such as birth control pills or intrauterine devices, known as IUDs. Project 2025 pointed out the same.

However, it does recommend restricting some emergency contraceptives from certain no-cost insurance coverage. The Harris campaign also pointed to other provisions in the manual, including its call to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, which provides contraception to patients, and allowing employers to not cover contraception over religious and moral exemptions.

In its Health and Human Services section, Project 2025 says that some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella , a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. It labels the pill as a potential "abortifacient," or abortion-inducing substance. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involve a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

The manual calls for allowing employers to deny covering contraception based on moral or religious exemptions, and the defunding of Planned Parenthood, which provides contraception to patients.

Project 2025 does not mention IVF or propose restricting it specifically, but it contains language experts say could threaten the practice.

Project 2025’s Health and Human Services section also says the HHS secretary should pursue a "robust agenda to protect the fundamental right to life, protect conscience rights, and uphold bodily integrity rooted in biological realities, not ideology. From the moment of conception, every human being possesses inherent dignity and worth, and our humanity does not depend on our age, stage of development, race, or abilities." The section continues that the secretary "must ensure that all HHS programs and activities are rooted in a deep respect for innocent human life from day one until natural death."

This, experts said, reflects the thrust of fetal personhood, the belief that the legal rights of people should extend to fetuses or embryos.

In Alabama, the state Supreme Court ruled in February that stored embryos are afforded the same legal protection as children under the state’s 1872 Wrongful Death of a Minor Act. After the decision sparked outrage, and led to some of the state’s IVF clinics temporarily closing, the Alabama Legislature passed a law to protect IVF providers from liability for embryo loss or damage during IVF treatments.

Mary Ziegler, an abortion historian and University of California, Davis, law professor, said it’s not true that Project 2025 has specific plans for contraception or IVF, beyond restricting some forms of emergency contraception. But she said Harris is likely reading into the manual’s general personhood thrust.

"There's some less-detailed plans in Project 2025 around the idea that unborn children are rights-holding persons, and it's reasonable to wonder what that would mean for IVF and figures into what the pro-life movement has been saying, that personhood is incompatible with IVF, as well as some forms of contraception," Ziegler said.

IVF is arduous and expensive and involves months of preparation, tests and procedures to achieve a healthy pregnancy.

A successful egg retrieval may yield several fertilized eggs. About 30% to 50% of fertilized eggs, on average , reach the blastocyst stage – which is an early embryonic stage, about five to six days after fertilization. Reaching this point improves chances that an embryo will implant in the woman’s uterus and lowers the chances of chromosomal disorders. If egg retrieval leaves patients with multiple embryos, those patients may eventually choose to discard remaining ones. This is the sticking point that critics say Project 2025, and other anti-abortion conservatives, will point to to curtail or outlaw IVF as it is practiced in the U.S.

The Heritage Foundation, Project 2025’s lead sponsor, has called for restricting IVF , as have many of the manual’s signatories.

In a June 27 event , Beth Brinkman, senior litigation director at the Center for Reproductive Rights, an advocacy and legal organization, said Project 2025 enables federal agencies to act without congressional involvement against contraceptive and assistive reproductive care.

For example, Brinkman said, under the plan, the FDA could act to "restrict contraceptives" and reclassify emergency contraceptives as abortifacients. Access to some contraceptives, for example, such as IUDs, could be at risk since they work by preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Emergency contraceptives do not cause abortions . The medications are known to be effective only before a pregnancy is established.

"HHS could act to eliminate insurance requirements for contraceptives; it also could expand rights to refuse care," Brinkman said. "And the agencies could try to devolve a type of personhood right from the point of fertilization that’s similar to a recent Alabama ruling that recognized rights for extrauterine children. Those are the kinds of executive branch actions that can be executed under that plan."

Harris said Project 2025 calls for restricting "access to IVF and contraception." The manual doesn’t specifically recommend restricting IVF. It supports removing an emergency contraceptive from no-cost insurance coverage and the defunding of Planned Parenthood, which provides contraception to patients. It doesn’t recommend curtailing contraception access at large. However, the document has language that supports rights for fetuses and embryos, which legal experts say could threaten family planning methods including IVF and some forms of contraception.

Harris’ statement contains an element of truth, but it ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. We rate it Mostly False.

Sonya Massey’s Killing Is Black America’s Sorrow

In the days before she was killed, Sonya Massey was having death premonitions. She kept telling her family that she was going to die, that someone was going to kill her. On July 6, a local sheriff’s deputy became the incarnation of her fears: He shot her in the face in her own kitchen.

Massey, a 36-year-old Illinois woman, had called 911 because she thought there was an intruder in her house. Two Sangamon County deputies arrived and entered her home, and one of them, Sean Grayson, began cursing at her and threatening her over a pot of boiling water that she was holding. Grayson shot her at close range as she ducked behind a counter saying she was sorry.

The Associated Press reported that according to her family, Massey had been struggling with mental illness and “had admitted herself to a 30-day inpatient program in St. Louis sometime during the week before her death, but returned two days later without explanation.”

Sonya Massey’s daughter and son put their arms around Massey’s mother.

At a news conference on Tuesday at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on Chicago’s West Side, Ben Crump, an attorney for Massey’s family, said “many people said she had a premonition” because when the officers arrived she repeatedly said, “Please, God,” she asked one of the officers to grab her Bible and one of the last things she said before she was shot was, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

Among the first things Massey said when she opened the door for the officers was: “Please don’t hurt me.”
