Nani's Dasara hit theatres on March 30.

  • Nani's Dasara graced the screens on March 30.
  • The film is directed by Sirkanth Odela.
  • Keerthy Suresh, Deekshit Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko and Samuthirakani play pivotal roles.

Release Date: 30 Mar, 2023

Nani has been everywhere for the past few weeks. Be it promotional events or social media, he went all out in promoting Dasara as a pan-Indian venture. When the trailer of Dasara dropped, many felt that it reminded them of Pushpa and KGF. However, Dasara was neither Pushpa nor it was KGF. It had Srikanth Odela’s stamp despite the predictable storyline.

Dharani (Nani), Suri (Deekshit Shetty) and Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) are childhood friends. They hail from a village called Veerapally, where men take the bottle. Their alcoholism affects the women in their lives. Dharani and Suri are best friends. So much so that Dharani will give up his love for Vennela, who is in love with Suri. As Suri and Vennela take their relationship to the next level, it does not go down well with Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko). The village, where coal mining is a way of life, is divided because of Rajanna (Sai Kumar) and Shivanna (Samuthirakani).

Srikanth Odela is a debutant filmmaker, but he is a promising talent. With Dasara, he has built a semi-fictional world and has successfully transported us to the village of Veerapally. He shows Dharani as a vulnerable underdog. For a hero, he cries on screen, has no bladder control and shakes up in fear when trouble knocks on the door. In contrast, Suri, his friend, is his strength. While Dharani is naïve, Suri is practical. Meanwhile, there’s a feisty Vennela, who is a breath of fresh air.

Dasara is a film that relies on its drama. Srikanth Odela is in no hurry to dive into the story the right way. In fact, it looks like he knew he had a predictable storyline in hand and decided to build a world around it so he could create an immersive experience for everyone. Dasara has so many layers. The film talks about women and how they are exploited, rampant caste politics and superstition.

While the world-building, and characterisations of the lead roles and music make Dasara enjoyable, certain tropes hold the viewers back from completely enjoying this brilliantly shot revenge drama. In a scene, Dharani takes a decision which affects Vennela’s life. However, Dasara has another scene where Vennela questions whether she has a say in her life because she was never asked! And the hyper-masculine hero apologises.

The power dynamics in the village of Veerapally keep you hooked. However, some of the initial stretches of Dasara could test your patience. Nani’s Dharani holds back for the most part of the film, while Deekshit as Suri takes the cake. It is probably because of this that the interval sequence leaves you in a state of shock.

Nani is the soul of Dasara. From expressing his vulnerabilities to crying his heart out and emoting in silence, he has given his career-best performance. Keerthy, too, has a meaty role in the film. It is actually Suri who stole the show with his effortless acting.

Something that Srikanth Odela could have worked on is the characterisation of the villain, Shine Tom Chacko. It treads on a wafer-thin line and after a point, it does not create an impact.

Santhosh Narayanan’s music and Sathyan Sooryan’s visuals make Dasara what it is. The film could remind you of Dhanush’s Asuran and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara. While the film deals with a predictable story, it does have enough meat to hold onto its own.

<i>Dasara</i> Review: A De-Glammed Nani Makes Film A High-Voltage Affair

Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko and Samuthirakani

Director: Srikanth Odela

Rating : Three stars (out of 5)

Popular movies often fall prey to the second half curse. The power-packed and engaging Dasara , directed and co-written by first-timer Srikanth Odela, does not. It treats its first half essentially as a springboard for a successful post-interval leap to a meaningfully higher plane. And that is where the film stays perched all the way to an impressively executed finale.

Other significant attributes set the Telugu-language film apart from blockbusters like Baahubali and Pushpa . Its exploration of entrenched caste dynamics, bitter political rivalries and debilitating social ills in a coal mining village in Telangana pushes it closer to Tamil films from the Pa. Ranjith, Vetrimaaran and Mari Selvaraj stables.

Dasara remains steadfastly within the parameters of mass-oriented cinema and employs familiar Ramayan -centric analogies to carry the story forward. It still manages to break free at crucial junctures from its stylistic inspirations to dress an old, even perhaps trite, construct in fresh, eye-catching attire.

Dasara is a rustic love story-cum-bromance dovetailed into a revenge drama with a strong emotional underpinning. The composite is presented with a directorial vision that suggests that Odela could, and should, produce works of greater originality and distinction. This film testifies to his skill - and the vision - to tap massy, easy to grasp methods to tell important stories.

The denuded landscape reflects the state of the lives that Dasara depicts. The film is set in Veerlapally village, a speck on the map. It is a place that swarms with men who drink themselves silly and the women bear the brunt of their unruliness. At the centre of the village is a bar - it is named after Silk Smitha - that is out of bounds for all but upper caste drunks.

The narrative straddles a decade and a half from mid-1995, the final year of NT Rama Rao's third term as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, to 2010. The film's two principal male characters - Dharani (Nani) and Soori (Deekshith Shetty) - pilfer coal from running goods trains when they are not sloshed.

They are in love with the same girl, Vennela (Keerthi Suresh). The three have been friends since childhood. The altruistic Nani, who is meek-natured and believes in staying off confrontations, steps back and lets his best friend profess his love to the girl.

Several years on, the love triangle is aggravated by unseemly power politics between Rajanna (Saikumar) and Shivanna (Samuthirakarani), two half-brothers at war for control of the village and the bar. The latter has a son, Nambi (Shine Tom Jacob), whose aggression triggers a tragedy at the film's halfway mark.

A blood-curdling act of violence throws Dharani's life into disarray. He is a cowering mess until he gathers the courage to plan a retaliation. The timid, responsibility-shirking man is forced to make a choice between being resigned to his fate and taking a stand.

The first half, expended on creating a context for what is follow, takes its own time to pick up momentum. Parts of it meander a tad and even feel somewhat wayward. But the turning point just ahead of the interval gives the deliberate and staccato pace a rationale.

The troubles that confront Dharani, whose name means Earth, Soori (meaning Sun) and Vennela (alluding to the Moon) are caused by one man. The villain's motives are hackneyed and the threats that he makes spring from the power that he wields on account of his political and caste clout.

One wishes Dasara had pushed the caste divide envelope a little further and also stressed upon the relationship between the three main characters with some more clarity in terms of its wider societal implications. Is it possible that Dharani's suppression of his love for Vennela has something to do with where he stands in the caste hierarchy? The film does not raise that question, let alone devote a minute or two to answer it.

Another point at which Dasara slips up a touch is in the manner in which the key female character is deprived of agency when it comes to deciding her own future? Dasara makes amends of sorts when the woman demands an explanation why her consent wasn't sought before a life-altering choice was made on her behalf. The man spells out why he did what he did. While his defence of his action isn't entirely convincing, his apology is.

In the matter of plotting and pacing, Dasara isn't perfect, but Sathyan Sooryan's lensing and lighting and Santhosh Narayanan's lush and phenomenally effective musical score are both of the highest order. The latter lends the film a propulsive rhythm with its blend of the earthy and the electronic.

Sooryan's camerawork creates a palette that alternates between the inky and the auburn and is skilfully illuminated by the muted glow of non-electrical sources of light.

A de-glammed Nani makes Dasara a high-voltage affair. The screenplay and his own acumen allow him to ease himself into the character arc and capture the man's evolution from a feckless, evasive youth to a man of action after fifteen Dasara celebrations have come and gone with him letting his life drift aimlessly.

Dasara also gives Keerthy Suresh a wide range of emotions to convey. Even in the most melodramatic of moments, she retains control of her faculties and the scene. Deekshith Shetty operates within a more limited bandwidth but makes a lasting impression. On the flip side, the force of evil that Shine Tom Chacko embodies does not convey the requisite menace.

The rousing climax is invested with great power in term of of both visualisation and execution. The weapons used in the final act as well as earlier in the film tell their own story. To begin with, the villain's henchmen wield sharp scythes and sickles, which are farming appliances-turned-arms.

In the violent climactic clash culminates in tree-cutting axes, digging shovels and rock-breaking hammers making an appearance - a not-so-subliminal metaphor for a once agricultural community that has been forced into mining as a way of life.

A few wobbles notwithstanding, Dasara is a triumph because it achieves a delicate balance between the flashy and the essential and, in the process, delivers a piece of highly dramatic fiction that frequently seems to have emerged from the real world.

Dasara movie review: Nani film is a familiar but riveting tale of friendship and revenge

Dasara movie review: while the nani-starrer uses every trick in the book, it succeeds in sucking you into a world you haven’t experienced before..

Nani’s Dasara, like its recent counterparts like Rangasthalam (2018) and Narappa (2021), is a very familiar tale about the ugly side of caste politics. The familiarity also seeps into the fashion in which it narrates a tale of friendship and revenge. Nevertheless, the film still manages to leave you in awe, thanks to the world it’s set in and how debutant Odella Srikanth presents it. It’s deeply rooted setting and how Srikanth manages to transport the viewer to a never seen before milieu of coal-laden hamlet that really works in the film’s favour.

Nani plays a man named Dharani, whose life revolves around his friends.

The story is set in a small village called Veerlapalli, which is surrounded by coal mines. Nani plays Dharani, whose life revolves around his best friend Suri (Dheekshith) and his gang of friends. In their introduction sequence, we see the gang pull off a daredevil stunt by stealing coal from a moving train. In this village, drinking is a tradition, a way of life and the local bar is a place where all the men conglomerate to waste time. The bar, which is reserved for the upper caste men, is the place where power as well caste dynamics come into play.

Men from the lower caste drink outside and wouldn’t dare to set foot inside. When Suri and Dharani unknowingly become responsible for a shift in the power dynamics involving the bar, they cross paths with men – Samuthirakani and Shine Tom Chacko - from the most powerful family in the village. The repercussions that both Suri and Dharani have to face for their actions forms the crux of the story.

Dasara pretty much uses every trick that’s been used before when it comes to such stories. However, it still manages to leave a strong impact because of how it succeeds in sucking you into a world you haven’t experienced before. Veerlapalli is carefully built with characters that are full of life. Unlike Pushpa or KGF, this isn’t a story that rides on the hero’s bravado.

In fact, for a good 60-70 percent of the film, Nani plays a character that’s mostly scared out of his wits and he takes solace in alcohol to swallow his fear. Throughout the first half, Nani can be actually seen standing behind Suri. When the transformation happens at a crucial juncture of the film, Srikanth has spent a great deal of time in building Nani’s character. Hence, when his moment of uprising comes, we buy into the transformation.

Dasara does try and get massy towards the end. But the predictability doesn’t come across as a major grouse as the slow world-building really helps in keeping the viewer invested right till the end. Two of the film’s best moments come in the form of extremely well-choreographed action set pieces right before the interval and during the finale portion.

The interval action sequence is so well shot that it infuses a deep sense of shock and fear in the viewer, pushing one to the edge of their seat. Nani turns in such a believable performance and he sells his quest for revenge so convincingly. Keerthy Suresh once again proves why she’s one of the best mainstream actresses we have today with her effortless performance. Sathyan Sooryan’s visuals play a pivotal role in making Dasara not just eye-catchy but highly immersive in every frame.

‘Dasara’ movie review: Nani, Keerthy Suresh lead this gritty, emotional ride

Srikanth odela makes an assured directorial debut with the telugu film ‘dasara’, exploring caste politics in a mainstream format, backed by good performances from the cast led by nani and keerthy suresh.

Dasara, written and directed by first-timer Srikanth Odela, ventures into a space that mainstream Telugu films do not often dare to. It tries to be a ‘massy’ Telugu film that explores the ugly caste politics in a semi-fictional story set in the coal-laden hamlet Veerlapally, Telangana, with earnestness, and achieves this balance reasonably well. One of Dasara’s highlights is a chilling pre-intermission episode. The three central characters — Dharani (Nani), Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) and Suri (Deekshit Shetty) — are integral to the happenings. There is no scope for the display of machismo or bravado. The fear-inducing episode made me wonder, briefly, if this was the real incident based on which Srikanth had written this semi-fictional story.

First, to address the elephant in the room, Dasara is not a wannabe Pushpa or KGF . Rather, it tries to bring in the grittiness of Tamil films such as Jai Bhim, Asuran and Karnan , in its depiction of power equations.  Dasara is also in a zone similar to Rangasthalam , one of the few significant ‘massy’ Telugu films that explored caste dynamics in recent years.

It takes a while to warm up to the world of Dasara , where alcohol excess is a way of life, a way of escaping the travesty of the daily grind. For the men in the village, life revolves around the only bar named ‘Silk bar’. Srikanth tips his hat to the sultry Silk Smitha.

The bar is where the rules of power become evident. The upper caste men drink inside the bar while the others stay outside. A backstory of the conflicts within a powerful family, involving the characters played by Saikumar and Samuthirakani and later Shine Tom Chacko, forms the undercurrent for the power dynamics in the village. Srikanth places the three childhood friends Dharani, Suri and Vennela in this milieu. Their names aligning with the earth, sun and the moon are metaphors for their characters and relationships.

Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Deekshith Shetty

Direction: srikanth odela, music: santhosh narayanan.

The film draws us into Veerlapally that is carefully built through its many characters, Avinash Kolla’s production design, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan’s stunning frames in brown-black, earthy brownish-reds and the smart use of oil lanterns, along with Santhosh Narayanan’s rustic-meets-jazzy haunting musical score. Pay attention to the score in the cricket match that turns out to be a battle between the caste groups. Added to this, the rural Telangana dialect and the songs that mirror the region’s cultural ethos make the film all the more rooted.

As Suri and Vennela, Deekshith Shetty and Keerthy take centre stage, Nani stays in the background and the narrative is in no rush to push him to the fore. The bonding between the three is depicted beautifully, punctuated occasionally with humour. One of the earlier sequences in the police station helps to delineate the naivete of Dharani as opposed to the comparatively smarter approach by Suri.

Srikanth narrates the story of the hamlet as an insider, depicting how men are numbed by alcohol and why the fact that women voters outnumber men is actually not a reason to rejoice. Not yet. Once the power dynamics is displayed at full throttle, as expected, the underdog rises to hit back and fight for survival. When he etches his name on a sword, you cannot help but root for him.

In the latter half, a sudden shift in the relationship equation between two characters happens when you least expect it. Was it just a ‘mass’ moment to announce the arrival of a saviour? This comes after a tear-jerker sequence that seems plucked from some of the Tamil and Telugu movies of the 1990s. These are the portions in which the narrative wobbles a bit. But the narrative redeems itself in an endearing scene where Vennela questions if she has no say in her life decisions and the man, though his heart beats for her and he intended to protect her, apologises.

The quiet, understated romance that follows, sets the tone for the final encounter that runs parallel to Ravana dahanam . The motive of the antagonist is a trope that we have often seen in cinema. However, it serves to draw a parallel to the battle between Ram and Ravana.

Deekshit Shetty is a revelation as Suri and shows that he is an actor with immense potential. Dasara is no Mahanati for Keethy Suresh. Nevertheless, she is central to the drama and gives it her all. She portrays Vennela’s spring in the step as a young bride and later the quiet resignation to fate followed by resilience convincingly. Jhansi and the several supporting actors contribute by doing their parts well. The film ultimately belongs to Nani. In a completely de-glam part, watch him cower in fear and later in shame that he cannot think straight under the influence of alcohol. Several portions require him to convey his emotions with his body language and silence, and he is fantastic. In the final episode, he displays the rage of Dharani in full glory.

Dasara is not perfect. A few tropes could have been smarter. But this is a film with a lot of heart and succeeds in hitting the sweet spot between a gritty drama and a ‘massy’ mainstream film.

Nani's much-awaited film Dasara is finally in theatres but is it worth watching? Read our review here.

Telugu superstar Nani’s much-awaited film Dasara is finally in theatres. Produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri and Srikanth Chundi and directed by debutant Odella Srikanth, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko, Samuthirakani and Sai Kumar in key roles.

The film revolves around a boy named Dharani and is a story of love, heartbreak, friendship, and revenge.

The first scene of Dasara might remind you of Yash starrer KGF. While KGF revolved around gold mines, Dasara’s introduction scene establishes that the film is based in a village where people earn their living because of a coal mine. However, there aren’t similarities between Dasara and KGF.

Next, the film might give you an impression that it will be like RRR. While some might compare Dharani and Suri’s friendship to that of Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem from SS Rajamouli film, as the film progresses, you realize that there aren’t any similarities.

Nani is amazing in what he does. He is a treat to watch and it would not be wrong the say that the superstar is the backbone of the film. He plays his part with utmost ease and perfection. He has a swag and it is unbeatable. When you walk out of the theatre, you’ll miss Nani as Dharani. Nani’s physical look in Dasara might also remind you of Allu Arjun in Pushpa: The Rise. In several scenes, the two look very similar. However, Nani has also been given less screentime and dialogues in the first half of the film which might leave his fans a little disappointed.

There are also hints of Nani’s character Dharani being bisexual. He is overprotective and extremely caring towards his friend, Suri. Even though he says that he likes Vennela, he leaves her because of Suri. He tries hard to get Suri a job. For him, Suri’s happiness is of utmost importance. However, it should also be noted that nothing has been explicitly said or shown regarding Dharani being bisexual.

Keerthy Suresh is good at whatever she does but nothing extraordinary. She is a bundle of energy and bravery in the first half of the film. However, her character completely transforms in the second half. It has nothing to do with Keerthy as an actor but was rather the demand of the script.

However, Keerthy’s dance in the film is a treat to watch. Whether it was the Dhoom Dhaam song or the baraat scene, Keerthy Suresh dances her heart out and compels the audience to tap their feet too.

What Dasara lacks is a strong storyline. The film’s plot is very predictable and offers nothing new or extraordinary for the audience. What also looks a lot forced in the film are its songs. They don’t fit well and divert our attention from the seriousness of the movie. The film also has several gory scenes which might be difficult for some to watch. Even the title of the film, Dasara is justified very late in the movie.

But it is the climax of the film that will give you goosebumps and is worth watching. It is a complete package. Besides Nani’s killer expressions and top-notch action sequences, it is a visual treat too. The makers create magic on screen with this never-seen-before climax and it is worth all the wait. Pat on the back of cinematographers too!

Natural Star Nani is coming with Dasara in a new rugged look in a raw and rustic backdrop. In the direction of newcomer Srikanth Odela, the talented actor seemed very confident in the output. The trailer raised curiosity all over. The movie was released in theaters today and here is the review from the US premieres.

What Is It About?

A village in coalmine backdrop, Veerlapalli is in the clutch of politics and alcohol addiction of villagers. Dharani (Nani) and Suri (Deekshith Shetty) are childhood friends. Dharani falls in love with Vennela (Keerthy Suresh), but she loves Suri. The focus shifts toward Dharani and Suri after the politics between big heads involve them coincidentally. Dharani gets a shock of his life amid many twists. What happened to him and how does he fight back? This forms the story of Dasara.

Performances

Nani is one gem of an actor and proved it umpteen times. In Dasara, Nani reinvented himself and we see only Dharani from beginning to end. Undoubtedly Dasara remains Nani’s best performance so far. From the accent and appearance to emotional scenes and action sequences, Nani excelled in each and every frame. There are many highlight scenes of Nani where he snatches the show with his onscreen brilliance. Keerthy Suresh’s acting prowess could be seen alongside the scenes with Nani. Deekshith Shetty gives an on-par show with Nani and his terrific presence makes quite an impression. The leading trio’s performances are that pushes Dasara to the next level.

In other actors, Sai Kumar and Samthurakani get very limited roles and they did fine. The friends’ gang of Dharani is good. Shine Tom Chacko looked ordinary and could have been more vivid and striking.

Technicalities

We have seen many films with rustic backgrounds and raw characters. Dasara is not just one of them but also a technically remarkable and superior one. The cinematography is top-notch. From the frames where we see the roads around the quarry to the sunset shots, the inland feel is so well maintained to level with the narrative. The dark-lit mood stays throughout the movie and that tone also sets the premise. The background music is excellent and it raises the graph during the action sequences. The screenplay is good. Chamkeela Angeelesi song is impressive in every bit.

Thumbs Down

Villain Slow narration in some parts Straightforward story

Nani did not just act so well for Dasara but also promoted it like never before. He had been telling that he instantly liked the narration and went ahead with it. Dasara is pretty much a straightforward story with fewer twists and more emotions. Nani along with Keerthy Suresh and Deekshith Shetty managed to keep it high with their exceptional performances.

The first half of the movie builds the premise with more of the friendship between Nani and Dharani. The pace falls down most of the time in the first half until the pre-interval. The story keeps moving but there are places where it gives the dragged feel. The pre-interval block twist is a surprise and that particular shot is sure to leave an impact. The engaging graph that falls with the love failure song comes back to form with the chase and the killings before the interval. The interval block sets the right arena for the second half.

The audience in the US could have the real raw feeling intended due to the lack of censor cuts. The second half has its own lows and highs. The emotions play high most of the time than the plot twists do. A Dasara-like film from a new director is promising.

The authentic taking and captivating performances from the lead actors work well for Dasara, but the story has too many concepts to be dealt with. The concepts of friendship, caste, and political gamble later get overshadowed by love and then lust. Dasara ultimately emerges as a revenge drama though everything else could mislead the audience from guessing the plot conspiracy. The mix of one too many concepts might be thought of as adding a range of narrative possibilities, but that left the original thread a sloppy one. Dharani’s forgetfulness and courage when he gets drunk is a motif the director had been carrying from the start. The director might have wanted to address that and hence the closure on alcohol addiction.

Coming to the presentation, the director maintained the theme and setting effectively from start till the end. The dark-lit setting and the minute details like party symbols changing in Silk Smitha’s painting do not let the audience deviate from the setting. The villain character appears flat where it should be intense and powerful. While the other lead cast is performing top-notch, the villain character appears weak and inferior mostly. Only the director knows if the characterization is intentional.

The climax of Dasara is one that steals the show. It is a never-before action-packed massacre from Nani and he appears monstrous with a weapon in hand. Overall, Dasara has a common story with an emotional ride and a blend of bewitching action in parts, but it is Nani’s radiance that makes this Dasara blazing.

Bottomline: Raw, Rustic And Nani’s Rampage

Dasara Movie REVIEW:

I have been eagerly waiting for Nani starrer Dasara because the trailer quite fascinated me. And well, after watching the movie, it has left me with mixed feelings. While I thoroughly enjoyed Nani’s presence and his charming swag onscreen, it is the story that didn’t move me as much as I was expecting it to be. It is an emotional movie about friendship and love; however, it was too melodramatic that you will feel saturated at one point.

The highlight of Dasara was the beautiful friendship between Suri and Dharni that will surely move you. In fact, there was a train scene in the movie that resembled Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor starrer Gunday. That’s not it, even Suri and Dhahran’s friendship and bromance also seem to be inspired by Ali Abbas Zafar’s directorial venture. Furthermore, it also seems like the movie is inspired by other movies, so there is nothing new on the table. It is the powerful performances of the stars that seem to be the winner.

Moreover, Keerthy and Nani have worked together in Nenu Local (2017) and their chemistry was loved by one and all. However, if you’re hoping to see their crackling chemistry in this one as well, then you’re in for a disappointment. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see the same in Dasara though it would have been a cherry on top for sure.

Nani starrer’s runtime is 2 hours and 36 mins and still I felt it was a drag. There were a few scenes that could have been edited to make it crisp and impactful. Moreover, it seems like the makers of Dasara poured an extra bucket of drama making it quite overdramatic.

Set in the backdrop of Singareni coal mines near Godavarikhani of Telangana, there live a small village amidst coal mine field. It is a story about friendship, love and good triumphing over evil.

Star Performances:

Nani plays the role of Dharni who is an innocent man whose life starts with his friend Suriya and Vennela. He doesn’t have a motive in his life apart from getting drunk and spend time with his friends. Even though he is unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Vennala, Dharni sacrifices his love for his best friend Suriya who also loves the same girl.

Speaking about his performance, there’s a reason why Nani is called the Natural star. I was enjoy to see him onscreen, his swag, his charming smile and his fierce action are something that drives people crazy and I understand the craze. However, this time, he didn’t play the massy hero but an actor giving a par excellence performance. You can feel his pain and his sadness because he is that convincing in his role. No wonder why Nani is called a Natural star . It seems he understands the essence and the magnitude of the character.

Keerthy Suresh plays the role of Vennala who is a school teacher. She is bold and beautiful and lives her life on her own terms and has a voice to stand up for herself. Keerthy was fabulous as Vennela and it is easy to feel connected to her character.

Dheekshith Shetty as Suri is fierce and demanding. He always stands up for his friend Dharni, knowing that he is a ‘fattu’. He stays beside him rock solid no matter and can easily take a bullet for his friend. Dheekshith plays his part quite well.

Direction/ Screenplay:

The debutante director Srikanth Odhela directs Dasara and well, his direction will remind you of quite a few scenes of other South movies. To keep the movie raw and rustic, Srikanth used the undertone colour to make it look real but it will instantly remind you of KGF. Since it is a South movie, Shrikanth all the right flavours to keep it entertaining and interesting.

Conclusion:

Overall, Nani starrer Dasara is raw and gritty but it’s emotional mode can touch your heart. Nani’s performance is killer as always and will make you glued to the screen. Dasara is a slow paced movie and quite melodramatic but you will be entertained that is for sure.

Dasara on Netflix Review: Nani and Santhosh Narayanan Excel In A Distracted Film

Director: Srikanth Odhela

Cast: Nani , Keerthy Suresh , Shine Tom Chacko , Dheekshith Shetty

Here are some film pitches:

A coward who hides behind his macho best friend has to come of age when his best friend is unfairly murdered. Will this coward find the courage?

A young boy finds out that his best friend and the girl of the boy's dreams are in love. Will he get them together? Will he sacrifice his love? What happens when they all find out about each other’s love?

A bar in a remote village in Telangana becomes a site of contention between a Sarpanch and two young men belonging to an oppressed caste. Will the addiction to alcohol consume them as they chase the high given by power?

Ten friends must form a motley crew of assassins to avenge the deaths of those who were unfairly killed by the powerful men in a village. This is juxtaposed against the metaphor for Dasara in which a man with ten heads was killed by one man.

Each one of these ideas can become an outstanding film by itself but writer-director Srikanth Odela’s Dasara packs all these ideas into one film and therefore what we get is an exciting world of Veerlapalli that we know thoroughly.

We know the village has a clear demarcation of caste. We know that even in the bar, the one place where men claim to drown their sorrows and boredom, they cannot drown their differences. Like gossip, we learn that Padma who lives a few houses away from the protagonists is a widow whose husband was killed and the Sarpanch nominee might be involved. We know which grandmother loves to drink a lot. We know that coal mining is the primary livelihood and that the black soot that most would gawk at is viewed as an ornament worn with pride by the villagers. We know that the Sarpanch’s wife has a comfortable life but lives with an uncomfortable truth. We even know that the local priest is the umpire in a cricket match - take that for a metaphor about India’s villages and how caste claws into everyday life.

This world-building exercise by Srikanth Odela is immersive and he makes us feel the spice in the boti curry. We smell the stench of the bar, but we also want a sip of the alcohol they are consuming. The coal mines look exhausting to work at but Odela makes us want to dive in and dance to doom dhaam dostaan with everyone.

But Srikanth Odela struggles because he’s chosen a love triangle to explore this world. Dasara tells the story of Dharani who is in love with Vennela (Keerthy Suresh). But she and Dharani’s best friend Suri are in love and as a child, Dharani “sacrifises” his love. Things take a turn for the worse when a bar and an evil Sarpanch get in the way and the two men turn towards politics.

This love triangle feels the least interesting among the many little stories in the world of Veerlapalli not just because of the similarity in its premise to Sukumar’s Aarya 2 (2009), but also because of how weakly Suri is written. He’s supposed to be the “classic” hero — stronger, braver, nobler, and amiable. And Dharani is the coward, the addict, and the man-child. So Suri’s presence should have been like that of Julius Caesar — imposing despite not being present in the scene. But sadly, his presence ends up propelling the plot and the action scenes forward rather than leave a mark.

It’s not the predictability of his fate but rather how immemorable the character is that makes the triangle least interesting. In Aarya 2 , Ajay was at least cunning - he had flavour. When he took advantage of Aarya, his presence was felt even when he wasn’t in the frame. Here the odds are so heavily tilted in favour of Dharani, the character and Nani, the star that Suri’s eventual fate never registers as a trauma but it is rather a convenient way to skip the line to reach Vennela. By setting up a weak vortex in a love triangle what we get is a straight line and this linearity in such a non-linear complex world feels cumbersome.

Similarly, Odela wants to flex cinematic moments that leave the audience spellbound. The climatic action sequence (watch out for the one where Dharani is underneath a heap of bodies), the cycling sequence near the interval, and even the opening stretch show that this debutante has the imaginative muscles to creatively show masculinity and machismo on screen. But what about image-making in emotional sequences?

A song around a funeral seems to match a similar scenario in Rangasthalam (2018). There is a scene in which Vennela finds out an important truth and Odela chooses a bizarre straightforward approach that seems out of character for the person telling her the truth. More creativity and imagination here would have the thawing of a relationship between Vennela and Dharani seem more natural. Even when Dharani barges into the villain’s house (reminiscent of Rangasthalam ) a twist is revealed to him in the least imaginative and convenient of ways.

It is to Odela’s credit that in his debut film, more is expected of him than most could expect from filmmakers in their third or fourth films. But maybe to appreciate his strengths in world-building, which make him feel like an experienced director, his weaknesses in writing needed to be spelt out.

But where the writing falters, Nani and Santhosh Narayanan push the screenplay forward. I can’t think of the last film in which Nani was disappointing and this film proves that we might have to wait longer. Never before has machismo looked so easy on a person's shoulders. Even cheesy scenes where his face lights up at the sound of Vennela’s anklets become lovable because of him. Keerthi Suresh as Vennela, after shining so brightly in the first half, struggles to bring freshness in the second half, but that is because the writer chooses to make her passive.

Similarly, Santhosh Narayanan seems to be at home driving home points when the frames struggle to convey the same. A poorly framed cricket match sequence leading up to a “hero shot” is saved once the rap music kicks in. Similarly, a melodramatic sequence right at the end is saved by a simple background score that reduces the general pitch of the scene.

Srikanth Odela knows his world inside and out. The bars, the gullies, the politics, and even the best recipes for food found in Veerlapalli. But having chosen a love triangle, he falters in doing justice to all ends of the triangle. Luckily for him, Nani and Santhosh Narayanan bridge most of those gaps making Dasara an exciting film to watch, discuss, and dissect.

Jala Harathi programme at Pavitra Sangamam ghat to be resumed by Dasara festivities: Ramnarayana Reddy

dasara movie review bollywood

VIJAYAWADA: Endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy said the state government would resume the Jala Harathi programme, offered to the Krishna and Godavari river waters, by Dasara at the Pavitra Sangamam ferry ghat in Ibrahimpatnam.

Reddy said the government has set a 30 to 45 days target to complete the restoration works at the Pavitra Sangamam ghat.

On the instructions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to resume the Jala Harathi programme at the Pavitra Sangamam ghat, Reddy, along with ministers Ponguru Narayana (municipal administration and urban development) and Kolusu Parthasarathy (housing), visited the ferry ghat in Ibrahimpatnam to get a first-hand report on the prevailing conditions at the ghat area.

The ministers reviewed the situation with Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam (SDMSD) temple body and officials from the irrigation, CRDA, R&B, police and electricity departments regarding the development of Pavitra Sangamam ghat.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy said the government would construct a new temple on 50 acres and develop the island lands on the other side of the river into a tourist spot.

“It has been decided to launch boating and speed boat rides from Prakasam Barrage to Pavitra Sangamam ghat, and the ghat will be developed to cater to tourists and devotees,” Reddy said.

It is estimated that Rs 11 lakh will be needed per month to perfor Jala Harathi and donations will be accepted from the devotees to fund the same. Subsequently, the government will finalise the construction of the temple after consulting with the Durga temple Vedic committee members.

Reddy alleged that the previous YSRC government had stopped the Jala Harathi programme, which was attended by thousands of devotees, in an attempt to reduce the significance of the Pavitra Sangamam region.

Officials explained to the ministers that Rs 88 lakh would be required to complete the restoration works at the Pavitra Sangamam ghat for resuming the Jala Harathi programme.

The ministers have directed the officials repair the road from the national highway to the ferry ghat, ensure proper illumination of the road and execute the works without compromising on quality.
