Descriptive Essay on Beauty of Nature

Nature is vast and full of beautiful things that comfort our physical and emotional senses. The beauty of nature is somehow immortal, infinite and eternal. The beauty of nature is a perfect reflection of the art of Allah Almighty. Natural beauty may be extinct at the moment, but as “the joy of beauty is eternal happiness”, so the effect of that beauty on the mind can never be in vain.

Natural beauty is a treasure that will never end. Nature has many faces. They are everywhere. The human eye is always in contact with good things.

One of the many beautiful features of nature is the sunrise and sunset. A person with a sense of beauty will never be able to ignore the beauty of the red light of the rising sun and the fading glow of the stars. Likewise, the beauty of sunset has inspired many sensitive and artistic people to compose verses of praise, write beautiful prose and paint, and capture the event with a cloth or a camera forever.

Another aspect of natural beauty can be found in the night sky. Arriving at your destination, the glowing stars and the glowing moon of the moon have nothing in common. Under the influence of the moonlight, this world also becomes a beautiful world and a dream world.

The changing seasons have their beauty that has fascinated the human mind for centuries and will continue to impress until the end of the universe. Spring is the most beautiful of the seasons and is undoubtedly the queen of the seasons. During this period, The earth was filled with lush vegetation, colours, and aromas. Spring is a time of beauty and love, hope and happiness, life and happiness. Forests, lush plains, fields, and meadows prowl the lush vegetation to attract attention. Spring has endless and countless charms and beauty. Autumn has its golden, brown and mature colours. A life that started in the spring matures in the fall. This is a time for maturity and maturity. Summer is a season that helps the ripening process. It has its charms and beauty in the form of the most delicious fruits and vegetables.

Cold winters, snow and fog have other advantages. It is a season of white, grey and black. Snow and ice have a fantastic effect on the human mind and are not as appealing as the dark clouds and the wind.

On the other hand, nature has the beauty of the refreshing sky, the snowcapped mountains, and the deep green valleys. On the other hand, it has the mysteries and incomparable beauty of the deep blue sea. Nature preserves the beauty of the desolate desert and empty sand during the oasis. Its long-date trees that grow in the spring of freshwater show excellent scenes for tired and thirsty travellers.

Nature has endless treasures of beauty in the form of various beautiful living creatures. The world of birds, beasts, reptiles, and fish is teeming with life and millions of species of all kinds, in size and colour and on the earth, in the sky and the water. They are everywhere and at all times. They adorn the environment by simply being present.

Humans, the “crown of creation,” is by no means the most beautiful. Beauty lies in the condition of the body, the brain and the soul. It exists like human nature, such as mother, sister, brother and father, friend and companion.

Beauty is present in the child’s smiling face, the mother’s prayerful hand and the anxious state of the father. Beauty is like the reassuring handshake of a friend, the gentle touch of a brother and the love of a caring sister.

Undoubtedly beauty exists in man, in the environment, green fields, high mountains and small hills, in the moonlight and stars. Nature is full of the beauty that exists, almost everything scattered about us. “Beauty, truth, truth, and Beauty,” as the saying goes.

Introduction

Description of a beach.

Summer is the perfect time for individuals to visit and enjoy the marvelous scenes along the coast. In addition, the feelings and experiences felt on the beach during the summer are always fantastic. Several sceneries and experiences are seen and felt at the beach during summer. These include; the plantation along the beach and inside the sea, the animals, the waters, and the people found on the beach.

The beach appears to be alive and joyful with the presence of the natural vegetation. There are evergreen plantations both along and inside the beach. Images of buoyant seaweeds can be seen along the shore. Palms trees are seen to stand tall along the beach, dancing to the tune of the breeze emanating from the waters of the sea.

The sea grapes and the sea oats are also observed gathered in clusters in the sea next to the shore. Their colored flowers are splendid and brighten at the shining of the summer sun. The sweet scent of the flower grapes sends a signal to the world about the hope brought by nature.

The atmosphere is fully intensified by the aroma produced by the buoyant sea flowers. In addition, from afar, images of leafless trees are also observed. The perfect combination of the vegetation along the beach and inside the sea displays the beauty of nature to the highest peak.

It mesmerizes the eyes to gaze at the beautiful creatures that hover all over the beach and on the deep-sea waters. There are sights of beautiful birds that fly all over the dry shoreland and over the seawaters. Their colored feathers brightened the sea with a marvelous appearance at their illumination by the sun’s rays.

There are varieties of birds that are in the vicinity. For instance, there are pelicans and seagulls. Pelicans are seen hovering over the sand, singing sweet melodies that make the atmosphere at the beach vibrant. The seagulls are also observed to be flying over the seawater in small groups. Some of the birds are gathered in groups spreading the wings that cloaked a soft shadow on the gentle water ripples.

Next to the shore, there are sea turtles that seem to enjoy the summer heat from the sun. Their eggs are also seen to be exposed on the sand by the children that play on the shoreline. Bees are seen flying from one flower to another over the sea grapes. The humming of the bees as they gather nectar from the sea flowers attracts insect-eating birds.

Large crowds are observed all over the seashore. These people come to enjoy themselves on the beach at this period of the year. In the sea, people of all ages and sexes are seen swimming and playing with the cool seawater. The scorching heat from the summer sun is felt on the forehead of all individuals.

This makes the people chill themselves in the cool waters of the sea. The children are seen playing beach ball on the shoreline. Some children are also seen pelt each other with sand on the shoreline. Besides, young boys are observed climbing tall palm trees to gather fruits.

What is more, several activities take place along and inside the shoreline. Vendors are seen carrying ice creams and soft drinks all over the shoreline. Views of homes, hotels, and other buildings that run along the peak of the beach are also seen. On the sand where children play, pieces of shells are scattered.

In most cases, children collect the shells for fun. In the shades built along the shoreline, people are seen reading books, journals, and magazines. Some are seen idling on the sand, while few adults are observed playing football.

However, there is a disgusting scene of plastic bags, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beer bottles along the beach. These items seem to pollute the entire shoreline and the seawater.

Anglers are also observed far into the sea casting large nets into the waters to have a bulk catch of their prey. Some of the anglers are also observed perching on the edge of the shore carrying sticks in their hands. Their faces displayed the anticipation that they had for their prey.

The deep waters of the sea produce a marvelous view for anyone who gazes at the sea. The water is seen to be slowly running low on the shore. Small waves are also observed crashing on the shoreline. The surface of the sea is seen to appear blue in color.

However, some portions are also seen to have the spectrum that results from the sun’s refracted rays. Deep inside the sea, there are high waves that lift boats up and down mightily. The shimmering waves of the sea that are clear and blue mirror the rays of the hot sun. The refreshing breeze that emanates from the seawater is enjoyable.

In conclusion, the beach has a perfect view and activities that are delightful to experience during the summer. It is a place that everyone would love to be at all times.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Posted by Amazing Traveler | May 24, 2017 | America | 0 |

Majestic scenery, wilderness, and wildlife make up the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Millions of people travel to the United States to visit Yosemite National Park every year, but for me, it was more than just a national park, it was the most beautiful place I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Drenched in history, the Yosemite National Park was first discovered by Native Americans over 10,000 years ago, and we can thank President Abraham Lincoln who first signed a grant in 1864 to permanently protect the land. Yosemite was one of the first territories preserved for its scenic beauty, public use, and continued enjoyment.

The Yosemite National Park is renowned worldwide for being one of the most beautiful national parks to visit. It situate in Central Sierra Nevada of California, and 95% of the park officially class as wilderness (that is huge considering the entire park covers 1200 square miles)!

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

I will never forget to look up to witness the most incredible, dramatic waterfalls pounding down from sheer cliff edges. Awe-inspiring granite cliffs and crystal clear streams surrounding me and putting the power of nature into perspective. If you have ever considered exploring the Yosemite National Park, please give yourself plenty of time to do so. A week was not long enough for me!

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Placing the enchanted landscapes to the side; my main inspiration to visit Yosemite stemmed from all the stories I had heard of wildlife living in peace and protection in their natural habitats. I had read about wild coyotes, black bears, mountain lions, river otters, pumas, panthers and over 200 species of birds circling the area! Of course, you are not guaranteed to see everything, but by giving myself a week there, I was able to see quite a lot.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Useful & Interesting Fact!

According to various articles, there are approximately 400-500 black bears in Yosemite but it is important you know what to do should you ever come face-to-face with one of them. Yes, they are gorgeous to look at and watch (I had the pleasure of seeing four black bears during my time there) but, as you will be aware, they can be dangerous if you find yourself too close. Maybe easier said than done but try not to show fear if this happens. Stand your ground, raise your arms and make almighty loud noises!!! It says that bears will most likely be scared away.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

My top 5 things to do in Yosemite National Park:

Visit yosemite valley.

Described as the most stunning location in the whole of America, the Yosemite Valley is of course not to miss. It is seven miles long and less than a mile wide accommodating the Merced River which flows through it. Here I was lucky enough to witness how the deer and coyotes live; to say this was an enjoyable experience would be an understatement.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Visit Yosemite Falls

It is the highest waterfall in the Yosemite National Park and the fifth-highest waterfall in the entire world. The impact of the water as it hits the base of the lower fall echoes through much of the valley and if you are lucky you will witness the most magical rainbow on a sunny day. It is a common sight for explorers!

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

El Capitan Rock Climbing Mecca

Rising more than 3,000 feet straight up from the Yosemite Valley floor, this is said to be the single largest piece of granite in the world! This world-class destination for experienced climbers is a wonder to climb, and I loved every second of it.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Yosemite Tunnel View

This iconic scene is one of the most stunning things I have ever seen. It allows the perfect balance of sights including El Capitan on the left, Half Dome in the center and Bridalveil Fall on the right! It’s one of the first views you will encounter upon entering the Yosemite Valley and will leave you speechless.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Mariposa Grove

Just wow! Have you ever had the pleasure of seeing the majestic Redwood Trees? These are known to be the largest living thing in the world and can grow up to 85m in height. Visit the Mariposa Grove for a full dose of these enormous trees and the ‘Grizzly Giant’ which is believed to be over 2,700 years old.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Are you an adventurer, an explorer of all things wild and beautiful? I sure am.

Hiking, backpacking, and skiing are all possible at this magnificent area of the world. I spent time indulging in the action packed sports activities such as snowboarding, white-water rafting, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing the sheer cliff edges at the Yosemite National Park! The wilderness is a real escape from the stresses of modern day civilization, and you can rely on the bubbling natural hot springs to soothe your mind and energy. It is just my experience of this mind-blowing landscape; there is so much more fun to have.

Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

The Yosemite National Park is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, and I recommend it to you.

Writing scenery: 5 ways to evoke captivating worlds

Creative writing is a powerful window to express ideas and perspectives that you want to share.

While the plot and themes of a story are integral to the overall piece, writing scenery can evoke not just the setting but the emotional mood and unique lens which your story offers.

To give you some ideas for painting a vibrant scene, here are 4 personal tips for writing scenery that I’ve found useful!

1. Describe the senses when writing scenery

An image of a sunset with a tree beside a lake. There are two birds next to the tree, and there are delicate vines and shrubbery covering the land.

What are the key details in your scene? Consider how these could be depicted using more than one sense. Consider taste, smell, touch, sight, sound, or other elements like temperature or motion.

How should you describe sensory stimulus? One way is explicitly stating it, although it is often advised to use a degree of subtlety when applying sensory language. Direct use of words like ‘sound’ and ‘smell’ can be modified by instead using literary devices like metaphor, personification, or simile which stylize the description. Consider what imagery or associations the sense evokes . Utilizing descriptive words ties in these associations. The overall image summons undertones of the associative meanings.

2. Add evocative or action-related words

Evocative action-related words can also help to describe fictional stimuli when describing a landscape. For example, using action-focused words like ‘whispering’, ‘buzzing,’ and ‘cracking’ give insight into both the action and attributes of a given sound, without overtly detailing it.

Action words could be used to describe many senses or other details.

Examples of scenery description words like

  • ‘wafting’
  • ‘attacking’
  • ‘whispering’
  • ‘tinging of the air’

and other may be especially useful for describing smell.

When describing sound, verbs and action words may also be useful. You could consider words like:

  • and others.

Researching similar action words for specific scene will give more appropriate words for the landscape that you’re describing.

A choice of specifically powerful words may induce multiple layers of imagery that contribute to the description in the scene. Writing about ‘warm, cinnamon-apple tinged air’, for example, indicates the sense of smell while also possibly conjuring imagery of red apples and earthy cinnamon. The addition of a temperature-related word adds to the atmosphere of the imagery.

3. Inspire emotional mood and climate

An image of a bluish cat with a heart in its centre, giving off a sparkly-looking glow. The image has slightly scratchy a texture similar to wool.

The piece of story that details the physical stimulus of scenery can fold multiple layers of meaning, like feelings associated with the scene, or crumbs of the emotional atmosphere that the plot is directed towards.

When considering your word choice, add in descriptive words that evoke not only scenery-related imagery but emotion. By using emotive adjectives, but also more subtle words that connect to the potential concepts you want to convey in your story. Perhaps replace blander words with verbs that connect to an emotive action or use metaphors that evoke imagery while also hinting at a character’s thoughts. A metaphor describing scenery could also have a double emotive meaning or foreshadow ideas to be discussed later.

When describing the physical details of a forest, you could use this as an opportunity to evoke the energy of the landscape.

In this example, words like ‘dry’, ‘needles’, ‘crackling’, ‘ghosting’, ‘huddled’ give a haunting aspect to the scene.

The dry crackling of leaves under foot .

The huddled pine trees, their needle-leaves ghosting long shadows across the ground .

4. Incorporate physical details of the scene

Remember to describe the key elements of the scene. Consider what necessary details compose the fictional surroundings to give an impression of the appearance. Perhaps consider how you would describe the scene if it was a movie, or how you would think about it if you were newly experiencing it yourself.

5. Add details to the scenery, yet keep it concise

Image of a girl hovering over a plain brick background with a small book. A view of a starry sky extends from the book.

Although using a range of literacy devices and descriptions will give a better mental picture to represent your scenery, remember to display the key details in a way that reaches the purpose of your descriptive writing.

Are you trying to convey emotion? Describe an integral setting for the plot?

Try to leave out words that don’t contribute to what you’re truly aiming to communicate. Numerous paragraphs of description will often be difficult for readers to follow… (though usually, I end up overwriting setting anyway).

Describing landscapes

by  Kate Woodford

john finney photography/Moment/Getty

Have you ever wanted to describe an area of the countryside but found you didn’t have the right words? If so, we’ll fix that this week with a look at words and phrases that we use to describe different landscapes .

To start with the most basic description, an area of land that is mainly covered with grass or trees is often described as green : There are so few green spaces in the city. An area that is especially green, in a way that is attractive, may also be described as lush : lush green valleys . A more literary word for this is verdant : All around her were verdant meadows.

Meanwhile, a landscape that has few or no plants because there is so little rain may be described as arid : Few animals can survive in this arid desert landscape. (A technical description for an area that has little rain but is not completely dry is semi-arid : a semi-arid zone. )

Land that is extremely dry because rain has not fallen for a long time is often said to be parched : parched earth/fields. Sun-baked , meanwhile, describes land that is hard and dry because it has received so little rain for so long: The sun-baked earth was full of cracks.

Other words describe the shape of the land. A hilly area has lots of hills: The countryside round here is very hilly. The phrase rolling hills is often used in descriptions of attractive landscapes with many gentle hills: Everywhere you look, there are rolling hills. The rather literary word undulating is also used to describe this type of landscape: This picturesque village is surrounded by undulating hills.

Meanwhile, a landscape with bigger hills – mountains – is mountainous : a mountainous region . If those mountains have snow on the top, they are often referred to as snow-capped : a snow-capped mountain range.

Still with the shape of the land, craggy describes an area with lots of rocks sticking out: a craggy coastline. Rugged is very similar, describing an area of land that is wild and not flat: These photographs really capture the rugged landscape of the region.

Of course, not all landscapes are green and hilly. An area may be flat . If there are no trees, hills or other interesting features, it may appear rather featureless : It was a grey, featureless landscape.

Two negative adjectives that are sometimes used to describe featureless landscapes are bleak and desolate . Both are used for areas of the countryside that seem empty and cold, with nothing pleasant to look at: The house stands on a bleak hilltop.

Another adjective sometimes used in this context is windswept . A windswept area of land has no trees or other high structures to protect it from the wind: The picture shows a desolate, windswept landscape.

When were you last out in the countryside? How would you describe the landscape?

I was born in the countryside so my village is surrounded by beautiful green landscapes. It’s situated near the delta of the river Volga which is the longest river in Europe. Though a little bit far from the river there are sun-baked steppes. Some people find them featureless but I think every place on the Earth has its own charm. You can even see barkhan dunes there. It’s an amazing view. Last month I spent my holidays in Phuket, Thailand. It has so wonderful hilly landscape. There are so many jaw-dropping views there. It’s worth to be seen. Thank you for your posts! They all are very helpful!

That’s a very nice descriptive piece, Ekaterina. Thank you for that!

If you make an interesting blog about soccer star and teams, I shall gladly read it. Including teams in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and the UEFA Champions League would be so nice.

I agree with you, Ekaterina there is no place on the earth without a special way of charming.

They are so stressing to me. I have so many books assigned and now I have to read this??!!!

Lush green vegetation from the Isle of Spice, is what I am looking at when I look out the window.

Lucky you! Sounds fabulous.

You got a point there

My live in Cauquenes a little town in Chile , this place is surrounded by trees and lush green areas, rather verdant meadows, my country also has the most arid desert in the world “Atacama Desert” amazing place to visit; for the most part of the center of the country we can find a semi-arid zone, mind-blowing beaches, rivers and rolling hills all converging in the central zone (which I live) quite mountainous by the way.

Thank you for the help with my vocabulary. regards.

You’re very welcome, Felipe! Thank you for the lovely description.

Pingback: Describing landscapes | Editorials Today

When I go to Tarhona, my countryside, the green spaces (the farms) in front of my eyes, the blue spaces (the sky) above my head and the golden spaces (the sand dune) behind my back is the poem that makes me dance with the pleasure of colours.

I live in a small town and like most of our inhabitants I also live in a block of flats. It doesn’t sound interesting at all but when I look out of the window I can see Black Sea coastline, I can sea its “mood” changing, its melting sunset and from the other window I can see mountains and today they are snow-capped they seem to exhale frosty air on our town. When I see these views I feel the eternity of life and nothing can trouble me.

I live in the main part of the city in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. I hardly find green spaces in the city. But God’s grace there is a park nearby where one can find some trees.

I used to live in a mountainous city, Amman – Jordan. Around 3 millions people is living on a 7 mountains. Transportation is not that easy in the city, in which lots of people still using long concrete stairs to move.

I am from Ipele in Nigeria, a beautiful small town surrounded by hills. Everywhere you turn your eyes, you see rolling hills so green and full of life. Should you move towards the eastern part of the town, you will encounter different species of trees hanging on the hills in a way that one will find it difficult to explain the friendship between nature and creation. Running slowing is a stream that runs from up one of the hills to form a pool at the lower valley. The pool is known as Ashiyan. At the other side and near the pool is another hill from under which a small spring do come out to form a small pool called Lala. The two pools are together but their water do not mix. Lala’s water is so crystal clear that people mostly take it for drinking while that of Ashiyan is brownish. It was rumored that if the two waters are put in the same glass bottle, the bottle will break. A remarkable observation is that the butterflies playing on the two pools are equally different as well. Colourful butterflies can be seen on Ashiyan while only white butterflies are seen on Lala. The breeze in the area is always lovingly cool no matter how hot the heat of the sunshine. Adding to the scene of the place are the melodious and beautiful sounds coming from the birds on the surrounding trees. The place possesses its own remarkable and special way of charming that is so striking.

lovely description

I live in Noida, India and it has very few green spaces left due to rapid urbanisation and industrialization. However, we can get to see lush in few parks but that is not sufficient for a healthy environment.

I live in hilly area, which could be described as countryside. The town is surrounded by trees and wood. There is many rolling hill and lush green landscapes.

please write about describing wind movement ( like windy day …) and also for rivers. Thankyou for this post . It is very helpful

Hi Meetu. Thanks for your nice comment. This blog might be of interest? https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2017/04/26/sweltering-torrential-and-gusty-interesting-words-for-talking-about-weather/

Thank you very much for your reply. It is very helpful for us.

It is a very profitable blog post for me. I’ve enjoyed reading this. It is very informative and useful post.

Region where i live is featureless. i would love to reside near hilly or mountainous areas.however,in my country there is a huge lack of green spaces.

Hey i want to learn how to describe a landscape(which ever it is) in the most catching way. Can you help me out?

Reblogged this on NaN .

I was trying to do Geography homework and this didnt help at all.

Thank you very much, that was interesting !

Could you make an article about words describing the beauty of landscapes, like bucolic (or pastoral), and with adjectives or adverbs who help to imagine this beauty, like “as far as the eye can see”, please ? Thank you ! 😉

My hometown is a small village located in southeast of China where hilly spaces are everywhere covered with lush green forest. Far away from bustling city, inhabitants are living a slow-paced life-style here. Geographically, there is no mountain, no particularly worth-mentioning landscape. It would be a generally a flat and featureless land if it were without green spaces. Characterizing by a multitude of elderly people as the young are seeking prosperous in big city, my hometown has became a place without vitality.

Very helpful.

Dear Kate, Thank you for sharing the knowledge which is of great help for me.

Thanks for your good explaination of landscapes

You’re very welcome!

Thanks for the lesson how I can express my emotions when I see different landscapes.

One of the most charming and picturesque places I’ve ever visited is by far the legendary Peles Castle, located nearby Sinaia, a mountainous Romania’s region. Well-known for being the first castle in Europe on having electricity, central heating, an elevator and even a mobile glass ceiling, among other innovative things, it’s surrounded by glamorous and lush gardens full of fantastic statues and vantage points with breathtaking views. If you want to escape the daily pressures of life, enjoying fascinatingly verdant and unspoilt places, Peles Castle and its undulating hills is definitely the one I’d recommend visiting. Exceeds all visitor’s expectations.

Well, Mihaela, you’ve made me really want to visit it! It sounds fantastic. Best wishes from Cambridge.

This is the way to learn English writing! This article is gem! Are there more articles like this? Thank you Kate!

Hi! Thank you so much! We haven’t written any more specifically on this theme, but we publish one every week (on a Wednesday) so do keep checking in. Also, you can search for posts containing specific words using the search facility on the right. Best wishes from Cambridge!

What an informative article never knew there were so many different ways to say landscaping. thanks again

Thanks, Hector! I’m so glad you found it interesting.

I live in a extraordinary place and wow. The hills are hilly and greens are greeny.

Thank you! It’s very useful!

Thanks you so much

I live in an urban area, with countless block storeys and not mush spacing between them. The landscape is more or less a featureless and craggy. Looking across the horizon, there are many trees across and rolling hills at the far ends.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • In a nutshell

Beauty of Nature Essay

Experience with the Beauty of Nature

During the mid-summer season, I went to a beautiful hill station with my family. Even though the ride was long, the beautiful scenery on the way kept me entertained. I could see deep forests and misty mountains as we went higher and higher. The winding roads also fascinated me, and I felt as if I had entered a different world. Upon our arrival at the place, I immediately fell in love with nature as it was preserved as such with fresh fragrant flowers of different kinds, cool weather and lush greenery. I found all my worries melting away as I walked amidst this wonderful nature.

Nature offers limitless happiness and satisfaction to us. As a nature enthusiast, one would find joy in the calm breeze, flowing streams or dancing flowers. From the little pebbles to sturdy rocks, everything is part of nature, which adds charm to it. Even nature creates music through the running rivers, twittering birds and gentle winds. When the sun sets and the moon takes its place, the whole sky is lit, and there is nothing more dreamlike than sleeping under the starry sky.

The seasons change, and each has its distinct beauty that cannot be matched. While spring brings in the best of nature through its vibrant greenery, winter calls for a misty and foggy beauty of nature. Autumn covers nature with a golden carpet of leaves and flowers, and summer witnesses the brightest days with delicious fruits. Besides, there are many living creatures, like birds, insects, fish, etc., in varying shape, size and colour that makes nature lively. A single peek through the window of your house would help you understand the true beauty of nature, which will surely lighten your mood.

Travel with your friends and family to hill stations, beaches and exotic places, and enjoy the beautiful sunrise or sunset.

What are the factors that affect the beauty of nature?

Although nature maintains its beauty, human exploitation has caused serious threats to nature. The excessive cutting down of trees for industry and home purposes and the pollution of water, air and land through the dumping of waste from factories are the main factors that threaten the beauty of nature.

How to preserve the beauty of nature?

Nature is an invaluable gift given to us, and we must not involve in any activity that would diminish its beauty. By planting more trees, avoiding the use of plastic, and reusing and recycling things, we can maintain the beauty of nature as it is.

“Monet in his studio boat,” Edouard Manet

How does this work follow impressionist style? What painting techniques did artist use? As Manet was influenced by old masters his manner of work seems to have some inclination towards realism. It would be correct to say that in this work Edouard Manet used a technique called “Alla Prima” that meant placing pieces of paint for the audience to see. He was actually the one to popularize it among future impressionists. However, despite the fact that Manet wanted to stay aside from the movement, I think the painting looks the most like an impressionist work.

Early American Lit and Culture

A middlebury blog, thomas cole.

Why does Cole think it is important to observe and paint American scenery? How does he think nature and humans should interact? How does one painting depict (or fail to depict) the ideals he discusses in his essay?

In his essay, Cole expresses his fondness and preference for American scenery, which, in his opinion, “[is] unsurpassed” by other countries where “the primitive features of scenery have long since been destroyed or modified…to accommodate the tastes and necessities of a dense population” (108, 102). This can be clearly see in his painting The Course of Empire: The Consummation of Empire. In the painting, the once primitive scenery is now “crowned with towers, the rudest valleys [have been] tamed by the plough, [and the] impetuous rivers turned from their courses” (102). Cole acknowledges that America will soon fall victim to the same Fate, “but nature is still predominant” in the country at that time (102). Therefore, he believes that it is imperative for Americans to take advantage of this rural nature, which he see as “an unfailing fountain of intellectual enjoyment, where all may drink, and be awakened to a deeper feeling of the works of genius, and a keener perception of the beauty of our existence” (99). He urges people not to be apathetic in their interactions with nature. He then goes on to remark on the beauty of each element in American scenery (i.e. the water, the Waterfall, the mountains, the sky, the sunset, etc.) For example, his admiration for the Waterfall can be seen in his painting The Falls of Kaaterskill. In the painting, we see “a chain of waterfalls of remarkable beauty, where foaming waters, shadowed by steep cliffs, break over rocks of architectural formation” (105). His belief that the “waterfall may be called the voice of the landscape” is successfully conveyed through the painting (105).

Thomas Cole’s “Essay on American Scenery” suggests that he paints natural scenes to experience a particular emotional response—one he describes variably as “a calm religious tone,” “tranquility and peace,” and a feeling “as though a great void had been filled in our minds” (100, 103, 105). He writes about “the importance of cultivating a taste for scenery,” which practice he seems to define as the appreciation of nature’s physical beauty and the ability of that beauty to give us peace and perspective. The relationship with nature he describes seems disturbingly one-sided: nature, it would appear, exists to provide us with views and artistic material and psychological ease. Cole briefly mentions his “sorrow” that mankind’s “ravages of the axe” have been wrecking “the most noble scenes,” but he acknowledges his own ambivalence, saying, “This is a regret rather than a complaint; such is the road society has to travel” (109). When describing the first European settlers in America, he calls then “an enlightened and increasing people” who “with activity and power wrought changes that seem magical” (102). His appreciation of the wildness or savagery of nature is almost always coupled with a gratefulness for the beautiful or picturesque, for something to “temper” that vision of overwhelming power. He describes his wonder at “[the marriage of] grandeur and loveliness,” betraying his personal belief in the equivalence of beauty and goodness he mentions.

Cole’s painting, “View from Mount Holyoke,” can be read in a similar way: clouds brew over the dark, wild, uncultivated portion of the scene, while the exposed valley seems to have braved the storm and now appears bright, ordered, benign, and attractive. The land by “the Oxbow” appears cultivated, which the sunlight and left-to-right conventions of reading suggest we see as progress. It appears to be “lovely,” “peaceful,” and “charming”—all traits Cole values in his essay (106, 107). The broken spear in the left foreground may indicate some uncertainty—perhaps the same questions Cole posed in his essay about our destruction of the landscape and its wilderness—but it would represent a very subtly raised concern.

Cole seems to resort to nature as a balm—as many who champion the natural world do—but I have difficulty viewing his approach as other than somewhat superficial and irresponsible. He describes natural beauty as functioning like a mask, able to “cast a veil of tender beauty over the asperities of life” (101). Though the beauty of nature may have substantial, perceptible influence over his own psyche, he seems to turn to it for a band-aid-type distraction rather than a constructive solution. He does not seem to feel any obligation to protect or maintain the beauty of the landscape he exploits, which further characterizes his appreciation as a shallow one. In fact, his writings and works suggest that he may prefer the human-inhabited (but not -dominated), “tempered” world to its unknowable and intimidating, truly natural state.

It is obvious from the start that Cole is very passionate about the scenery he sees throughout the United States. He is enthralled with the landscape and describes it in terms of sublimity and magnificence. He seems to think that everyone should express the same love of nature and rural earth as he does. He talks about important events that happened with rural earth as the background: Elijahs witnessing of the mighty wind, earthquake, and fire on Mount Horeb, St. Johns preaching in the desert. Cole asserts that even in the city this beauty cannot be hidden. American scenery is what really appeals to Cole, and he compares it with European scenery to further his notion of how magnificent and beautiful the landscape is. He shuns those who favor the scenery of a different country over their own, and hopes that they “will know better how to appreciate the treasures of their own country” (101). He insists that although European scenery and American scenery differ, one must not think the latter inferior. Cole talks extensively about the sublime and rugged landscape that has barely been touched by humans. It is most distinctive, he says, because there is nothing like it in Europe, where it has all been modified. In every component of scenery he discusses, whether it be water, mountains, or waterfalls, he compares it to the European counterpart and makes a compelling argument in favor of the American landscape. He also makes a point of not only painting a beautiful image of only one specific place, but touching on the brilliance of all regions of the country. Cole encourages people to take in this scenery, and to let it generate emotion and reflection. Cole sets up a framework for a new appreciation of the sublime, untouched American landscape. In “The Falls of Kaaterskill,” Cole exhibits this feeling of fear alongside awe. The scene looks wild and untouched, but at the same time something that is worth appreciating, something that can only be found here.

Cole’s essay demonstrates his fondness in American scenery. Cole was born in England but emigrated to the United States in his late teens. His passion for American scenery is evident in his writing as he compares it to European scenery. He believes that every American should find great interest in American scenery, calling it “his own land” and stating that those who do not find interest in it should “shut themselves up in their narrow shell of prejudice.” He also believes that the human mind connects beauty with goodness and therefore sees beautiful things as inherently good. Cole acknowledges that American scenery is different than scenery in the old world but does not believe that it should be viewed as inferior. Cole distinguishes its wildness as the most impressive characteristic of American scenery, a trait that the scenery of Europe no longer possesses. His vision of American scenery as raw and untamed is contrasted with his vision of a refined, tamed European scenery. Cole focuses on predominantly on the northeast United States, highlighting the mountains, lakes and waterfalls as the most sublime elements in nature. Their purity and primitiveness separate them from similar features in Europe. Cole also references Autumn in the northern states as the most gorgeous season in all the world. His critique of American and European scenery concludes with his belief that Europe’s scenery is associated with its past while American scenery is associated with its present and future. Cole is nervous for the future of American scenery, fearing that it may be “cultivated” and “ravaged” in the years to come as the population in the United States grows. Although this displeases Cole, he understands that “such is the road society has to travel.” Cole’s reasoning for painting and observing American scenery and taking in its beauty is because it will inevitably evolve over time into a more cultivated land. He encourages people to take the time to enjoy the purity of rural nature, insisting that it will promote clearer thinking and a more peaceful mind. He wants people to value American scenery for its unique beauty that differs from old world scenery and to refrain from comparing it to that old world. Cole’s painting, Home in the Woods, depicts the beginning of settlement and cultivation of this new land. While the forest and mountains in the background still hold their raw and untamed character, the foreground shows the start of civilization building on the river bank. It is clear that “the ravages of the axe are daily increasing” as we see a house built of trees and a other wooden structures surrounding the house, including a canoe in the river. The immediate foreground shows what appears to be the remains of the part of the forest that the people used to build their house. The excess stumps and logs are a much less picturesque view than the vast forest in the background. This painting reflects the beginning of a growing population in the northeastern United States that would exploit nature for its resources, and in doing so, take away its pure beauty.

After reading Thomas Cole’s “Essay on American Scenery”, the first thing that evidently jumps out to the reader is his unconditional love and passion for the scenery that is present throughout the United States. In essence, the role that nature plays in his life is unparalleled and he believes that every American should be interested in and treat the scenery of America with the utmost of respect. Regardless of where you live in this country, the scenery that surrounds you is indeed beautiful and magnificent. Basically what he is saying that that no matter where you are, nature is truly amazing. In his eyes, there is nothing more special that gazing at what the Almighty has created, the landscape of our country. After I read this essay, I could’t help but think about how bold Cole is in his very firm belief of the importance of scenery. When speaking of people who do not view American Scenery as a glorious and incredible sign, he says “Let such persons shut themselves up in their narrow shell of prejudice” (101). While I myself am not a nature connoisseur, after reading this line there is not doubt that I thought Cole was indeed an “American Scenery Snob”. However, Cole that speaks about how there are many elements of nature that make the scenery of America so amazing. When talking about water, he says that on one hand an unrippled lake can represent tranquility and peace, while on the other a rapid stream can symbolize turbulence and impetuosity (103). This is just one of the elements of nature that makes is so stunning. When looking at his paintings “The Course of the Empire: The pastoral or Arcadian State”, much of what he says in his essay comes to life. He says that “We are still in Eden” (109), which I believe is his notion that the most beautiful things in life are already given to us by God. In this painting, there are so many elements of beauty that it is hard to refute that quote. The mountains, the trees, the lake, and the sky all play a fundamental role in this beauty that is given to us for free. In a world where everybody wants things for themselves, Cole makes the claim that American Scenery is the only thing we really need.
