EdD Doctorate in Education

Student reading and taking notes

The Doctorate in Education (EdD) is an innovative programme designed for professionals in education and related areas who want to extend and deepen their knowledge and understanding of contemporary educational issues.

The EdD is a prestigious qualification that demonstrates skill in applied research and strong professional development. Successful candidates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Education and are entitled to use the title ‘Dr’.

The EdD is characterised by a professional orientation and a supportive structure. It aims to develop skills in educational research and enquiry and to use these in order to carry out research that will contribute to professional knowledge and practice. A growing number of professionals regard this style of doctoral programme as being a more appropriate vehicle for their further development than the traditional PhD.

The programme involves four years of part-time study, in two stages:

Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

This comprises the ‘taught’ component of the programme which will equip you with the skills and knowledge to support your engagement with the research and the practice field in which your project is located. This phase will involve you studying online modules on topics including: the context of education or health and social care research, literature reviewing, ethics, the principles of research design, and methods of data collection and analysis. Stage 1 is assessed through the submission of formative and summative assignments which focus on developing your literature review, refining your research questions and your proposal for research.

Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)

Students who successfully complete Stage 1 will progress to Stage 2 - the ‘research’ component of the programme. During this time you will carry out your study and work towards completing your thesis. The research stage has a structured schedule of submission of assignments which will pace you through ‘work in progress’ pieces and provide regular opportunities for feedback on your progress.

In both stages (1&2) you will be supported through online seminar discussions and annual residential weekends at the OU’s campus in Milton Keynes. You will be allocated two supervisors – your main one in year 1 and a co-supervisor in year 2.

IET is responsible for the technology-enhanced learning (TEL) strand of the EdD programme. TEL students research a wide variety of areas. Examples include:

  • Developing online teacher communities to support communication and collaboration
  • Collaboration in online courses in Slovakia
  • An investigation into the role of professional learning on the online teaching identities of higher education lecturers
  • Developing digital historians in Italy
  • On the Scope of Digital Vocabulary Trainers for Learning in Distance Education

How to Apply

Applications for PhD study with IET should be made through The Open University’s Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies. Find out more information here .

Faculty-funded studentships in the Social Sciences .

A PhD may be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis. The maximum registration for a PhD programme is four years (full-time study) or six years (part-time study).

During this time, you will develop a variety of research and other transferable skills, conduct primary research in your chosen area, and analyse and disseminate the results in a doctoral thesis of no more than 100,000 words, which you will defend via an oral examination. Your thesis must meet the expectations specified in the  QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications .

All PhD students are initially registered for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and the PhD registration is confirmed after the successful completion of a probationary assessment (at the end of year 1 for full-time students and year 2 for part-time). Your academic progress will be monitored throughout your degree studies, via formal progress reports and regular meetings with your supervisors.

You will get a huge sense of personal achievement. Our doctoral training programme will help you develop transferable skills that will be invaluable in your subsequent career. The research techniques and methodologies you master will enable you to make a direct contribution to the advancement of knowledge in your chosen subject area.

In a modern, knowledge-based economy, highly educated and skilled people such as doctoral graduates are in great demand. They form the most highly educated and skilled group in the UK. Many will go on to use their skills within academia or in research-intensive occupations in industry. However, there will be others who will draw on their research background and the skills gained through a doctoral degree to pursue a wide variety of other careers.

After exploring The Open University online prospectus, you may wish to visit  Vitae . Vitae is the UK organisation championing the personal, professional and career development of doctoral researchers.

Entry requirements vary according to the research topic and the specific studentship scheme you might be applying to. The minimum entrance requirement is an upper second class honours degree or Masters degree relevant to the proposed area of study from a recognised higher education institution (or other degree-awarding body) in the UK. The comparability of qualifications from outside the UK with The Open University requirements will be determined with reference to  UK ENIC .

You may begin your studies in either October or February. This ensures that you benefit from development and training as part of a cohort of postdoctoral students.

For 1st October start, deadlines for applications fall within the January-March period each year , depending on the Discipline to which you are applying. Please check with the discipline-specific pages.

Students who wish to fund their own studies can apply for October or February entry. Disciplines will advise further if they have additional application dates for self-funded students.

Student wishing to apply for studentships should consult studentship adverts for application closing dates, as these vary according to studentship scheme.

Both the MPhil and PhD degrees are offered on a full-time and part-time basis.

Full-time students should not take on more than six hours of paid work per week. Full-time students are expected to commit to spending a minimum of 37 hours a week on study. There is no limit to the number of hours part-time students can work. Part-time students are expected to commit to spending a minimum of 18.5 hours a week on study.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is partner in two Doctoral Training Partnerships ( DTP) which award PhD studentships on a competitive basis.

The Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is ESRC funded and is a partnership between The Open University, the University of Oxford and Brunel University London.  Further information is available at OU postgraduate research prospectus .

The Open-Oxford-Cambridge DTP (OOCDTP) is AHRC funded and is a partnership between The Open University, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Further information is available at OU postgraduate research prospectus and Collaborative Doctoral Awards on OOCDTP website .

Dissertation

(Doctoral Dissertation)

Comprehensive and exhaustive, directed independent study consisting of in-depth analysis of communication phenomena, synthesis of scientific communication literature, or in-depth analysis of best practices in the field of communication. You must have completed your coursework before enrolling under COMM 400.

Dissertation Milestones

The capstone requirement of the Doctor of Communication program is the conduct and writing of a dissertation (12 units).

You enroll in COMM400 in order to have your dissertation proposal formally approved and eventually completed, not to begin developing your ideas about your work. You should begin considering topics for your dissertation early on in the program.

You may only enroll COMM400 after completing all your coursework and your graduate advisory committee constituted. The dissertation has a credit of 12 units to be enrolled in one semester.   This does not mean that you need to complete your dissertation within that length of time. The timeline for your dissertation will be decided upon by your advisory committee and you.

In keeping with the spirit of openness, the DComm Program will not structure nor put timelines on your dissertation. It will allow the student and his/her adviser to work on the dissertation in an iterative manner without specific milestones and timeline restrictions. Take note that the program does not have a maximum residency period. This will also avoid confusion in recalling the total number of units registered. If you are unable to complete your dissertation in a given semester, you should enroll for residency in the succeeding ones until you successfully defend your work.

Your final grade is issued only once the dissertation has been completed and defended. An official note is placed on the transcript or records stating the semester when you have satisfactorily completed your dissertation.

Topic Presentation

Immediately upon enrolling your COMM 400 (Doctoral Dissertation), you are encouraged to communicate with your graduate advisory committee to discuss your topic. Your adviser may require you to give a topic presentation. In this event, you are expected to present your identified dissertation topic to your graduate advisory committee for their approval. Ordinarily, the topic presentation would consist of the following: your proposed title; the rationale for the topic including research gaps or inconsistencies found in the literature; research questions; a theoretical framework or lens; and your proposed methodology. This implies that you have read the literature related to the topic that you can fully discuss the rationale, the research problem and the research objectives for your topic.

Dissertation Examinations

There will be two dissertation examinations: the proposal presentation; and the oral defense or final exam. The student and his/her advisory committee will determine the appropriate dates based on the progress of the dissertation. Individual members of the advisory committee may exercise his/her right to postpone the proposal presentation or oral defense if he/she has any doubts on the student’s readiness.

For the  proposal presentation , you are to present, in addition to the rationale of the study, research problem, and research objectives, the detailed methodology of your research.  This should include how the data will be gathered – if survey, who and how many will be your respondents and how will they be selected; if content analysis, what documents will be analyzed and how will the analysis be done; etc.  You are also to present the research instruments if these will be part of your research methodology and discuss how you will analyze the data that you will gather.

You should be prepared to describe measures that you will undertake to ensure that your research will adhere to the accepted Research Ethical Guidelines. After the proposal presentation, you are expected to submit a final research proposal and to clear it with the UPOU Research Ethics Committee. Guidelines on research ethics will be distributed to you in a separate cover.

For the  final defense , in addition to the parts already discussed in your proposal presentation, you should present the following components of your dissertation manuscript: Results and Discussion; Conclusion; and Recommendations.

For the benefit of the student, it is highly recommended that presentations and defense examinations be done face to face not only to avoid technical difficulties but to avail of the opportunity to interact face-to-face with the DComm faculty.

However, it may be conducted online ONLY if conditions merit such  but it will be done at your own risk of technical problems and coordination difficulties . Note that the committee may opt to decide on an outcome in spite of these constraints and it may not be on your favor. If you will opt for the online defense, you will be advised on what tool will be used.

How many years will it take for me to finish the program?

Assuming a normal load of six units per semester are taken, the average period to complete the course would be four (4) years. The period it would take to complete the course would however, depend on the student’s own pace.

I am currently working. Can I still enroll? The DComm Program was primarily designed for part time and working students. Thus, distance e-Learning  suits working students well.

What if I am based outside the Philippines? All courses are taught online, which means that you can study any course wherever you are.

How can I apply for admission? The procedure of application may be found  here .

Are there classroom sessions? All DComm courses are delivered online.

Do I have to view the modules at a certain time or date or can I study these modules at my own pace?

The courses taught are asynchronous. You can view these modules on your own pace, at your available time. However, do take note or be updated if there are deadlines set by the faculty-in-charge.

Will there be an instance where I would be required to personally go to the university?

If possible, present your proposal or dissertation defense in person. This not only lessens the technical difficulties you may encounter, but it would also be an opportunity for you to meet the faculty face to face.

How can I conduct my dissertation defense?

First, you need the approval of your adviser and panel members. The key here is to constantly communicate the progress of your draft with your adviser and panel members. Once the go-signal is given, schedule a defense date with your committee then prepare a powerpoint presentation to send to the student support staff before the date of your defense.

Please refer to this  flowchart  for more information.

If I could not make a face-to-face defense/presentation, how do I conduct an online defense?

Once you get the approval of your dissertation committee, set a date for your online defense.  Record a video screen capture with audio narration (screencast) of your presentation and email it to the DComm student support staff.  We will then instruct you on the video conferencing tool that you will be using ( Zoom ).

What do I need to prepare before my dissertation defense?

You need to prepare your powerpoint (or screencast) presentation. Provide a copy of your final draft to the committee, if possible. Other than that, laptops, projector, etc., will be provided by us.

Where can I access the program handbook?

The program handbook, style guide for dissertation, and other FAQ materials can be accessed here .

Applying for a Doctoral Program

a doctoral student leans over a microscope

Start Your Application

Manage Your Application

A Doctorate is the highest academic degree awarded by universities in most fields of study. It involves several years of rigorous research, culminating in a dissertation that contributes new knowledge to the field. Doctoral candidates work closely with a faculty advisor to explore and answer complex questions, often pushing the boundaries of what is known.

Applying to a doctoral program is like applying for a job. This process requires more diligence and patience than applying for a Master’s degree. To stand out from a competitive pool of candidates, you must prepare a strong application that includes your academic achievements, any related research experience, and a clear statement of your research interests and goals. Be sure to demonstrate your passion, fit for the program, and your interest in RIT.

Explore our doctoral programs

How to Apply for a Doctoral Program

For details on the exact application requirements for your program, visit the Application Details section on your degree page and thoroughly review the graduate application instructions page .

  • Most doctoral programs have an application deadline of January 15 and admit to Fall terms only, but be sure to verify the application deadline for your program and start terms before applying. Many programs will accept applications on a rolling basis after the priority deadline has passed until all spots are filled. For tips on completing your application, view our Ph.D. Application 101 recording .
  • Early applicants may see a “Hold for Program Deadline/Review Date” on the checklist in their portal. This an administrative hold that prevents applications from going for review until after December 15th. You will be notified when your file is sent to the review committee by email.
  • Choose the Right Doctoral Program:  Review individual doctoral program pages carefully to learn the curriculum, research focus areas, facility profiles, and facilities to determine if the program is a good fit for you and to ensure that your interests and background align with the degree. The application will allow you to enter up to three choices in order of preference.
  • Research Your Faculty Interests: Identify faculty members whose research aligns with your interests. Matching your research area with potential advisors strengthens your application and helps ensure a good fit. It is not necessary to secure a faculty advisor in order to submit your application. Learn more about researching faculty and areas of interest
  • Craft Your Statement of Purpose for Research: This requirement should clearly convey your research interests, indicate what faculty member(s) you would like to work with, your experience, and why you want to pursue a doctorate at RIT. Each program may have specific guidelines, so be sure to address them. There is no minimum or maximum length. If you listed more than one program choice in your application it is suggested that you prepare separate statements for each program (doctoral and/or master’s). You may upload all three at the time you submit your application, or wait for a decision on your first choice program.  View program-specific criteria
  • Choose Strong References: Make sure you choose the right people to submit letters of recommendation and give them plenty of time so they can prepare their support letter in advance. References should speak to your ability and promise to become a successful independent researcher. Professors, research supervisors, or professional mentors make ideal choices.
  • Update Your CV/Resume: Ensure your CV or resume is current and highlights relevant academic achievements, research experience, publications, and professional skills.
  • Verify Admission Requirements: Double-check all admission requirements and application details for your chosen program. Ensure you have all necessary materials, including transcripts, test scores, and any additional documents. You do not need to submit financial documents as part of your doctoral application. Focus on preparing a strong academic and research-focused application to showcase your qualifications and readiness for doctoral study.
  • Understand Decision Timing: The review process typically starts in late January and may take several weeks to a few months. Be patient as the committee evaluates your application and aligns faculty advisors with candidates in matching research areas where funding is available. You may be invited to interview if faculty would like to know more about you. Interviews are not required. Admission decisions are first communicated in mid-March and continue until the class is full. If you are not admitted to your first choice program, allow additional time for review for second and third choices. RIT does not simultaneously review for multiple programs.
  • Replying to an Offer of Admission: Accepted candidates must respond to their doctoral degree offers by April 15 or the date indicated on your admit letter and in their portal. If you decide to accept your offer, you are expected to honor your commitment to enroll at RIT as a doctoral student. This ensures a smooth transition into your program and reflects your professionalism and reliability.

Researching Faculty Advisors and/or Research Interest Areas

Identifying a potential faculty research advisor(s) and research interest areas in your Statement of Purpose for Research is important. It is not necessary to secure a faculty advisor(s) in order to submit your application.

Here are avenues for your research:

Align Research Interests

Ensure your research interests align with those of potential advisors. This alignment is crucial for a productive and supportive mentoring relationship. Review faculty members' recent publications and current projects to understand their focus areas. Visit the program page to learn about the current research for your program.

Use RIT’s “Find an Expert” Tool

Utilize RIT’s Find an Expert tool to identify faculty members with specific expertise. This resource can help you narrow down potential advisors based on your research interests. You may also want to use Google Scholar and search for RIT faculty.

Explore RIT’s Faculty Directory

Start by exploring the RIT Faculty Directory to find faculty members whose research aligns with your interests. This directory provides detailed profiles, including research areas, publications, and contact information.

Explore our Research Centers and Institutes:

RIT is home to a diverse array of research centers and institutes that drive innovation across various fields. These centers provide state-of-the-art facilities and collaborative environments to support groundbreaking research. Explore our extensive list of research centers and institutes

Reach Out to Potential Advisors

Once you’ve identified potential advisors, you may choose to reach out to them with a well-crafted email. This is not required but encouraged. Introduce yourself, briefly explain your research interests, and express why you’re interested in their work. Attach your CV and any relevant documents. Be respectful of their time and follow up if you don’t hear back within a couple of weeks. Do pay attention if it is documented that a faculty advisor is not taking on new students.

Funding Sources for Doctoral Students

Doctoral students typically receive full tuition and an RIT Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) or Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) that will pay a stipend for the academic year. There is not a separate application process for scholarship and assistantship consideration

Assistantships and Stipends

Research and teaching assistantships provide valuable experience and come with stipends that help cover living expenses during the school year, such as room and board.

Summer Support Some programs are able to offer stipend support during the summer. Eligibility for summer funding will be determined by the graduate advisor and/or program director.

Funding Throughout Program Funding throughout your doctoral program will depend on your satisfactory academic and research performance. Students are expected to fulfill their assistantship duties responsibly and make satisfactory progress towards their degree. It is expected that starting your second year, funding will be provided from your college either through a Teaching Assistantship or by your graduate advisor from external funds.

Student Fees Full-time students are responsible for both Student Activity and Student Health Services fees. In addition, RIT expects that all students will have health care insurance. Learn more about student fees

Timing and Distribution of Stipends

Graduate Research Assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a semi-monthly stipend payment starting a few weeks after the initial enrollment term. For U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents, no taxes are withheld at the time the payment is made. However, students are encouraged to file estimated tax payments quarterly. Detailed information about the timing and distribution of stipends will be provided by your academic department.

Financial Document Submission

Doctoral applicants are not required to submit financial documents as part of the application process. Focus on showcasing your academic and research potential without the added stress of financial documentation. If you are admitted, you will receive funding notification with your admission offer and international students who require a student visa will be assisted through the I-20 process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a doctorate and a master’s degree?

Understanding the differences between a doctorate (Ph.D.) and a master's (M.S.) degree program is crucial in making an informed decision. While a master's program typically focuses on advancing your knowledge and skills in a specific area, a doctorate emphasizes original research and developing new theories or applications.

Can I go from a Bachelor’s degree to a Doctorate? Do I need a Master’s degree first?

Yes, you can go directly from a Bachelor's degree (BS) to a Doctorate program. You are not required to get a master’s degree before pursuing a Doctorate. This pathway can be a strategic choice depending on your career goals and readiness for advanced research.

May I have an application fee waiver?

The $65 application fee covers the management and processing of your record and admission materials. If you are unable to pay our application fee due to financial hardship, we encourage you to carefully consider the expenses associated with graduate study before applying.

Is there a set GPA requirement for being considered for a doctoral program at RIT?

Admitted doctoral students typically have a GPA of 3.0 or above. If it is lower, you will not necessarily be eliminated from consideration. You are welcome to apply. The Admissions Committee will consider your complete application when making a decision.

Do I need to provide GRE or GMAT scores ?

Requirements vary by program. Refer to your doctoral program page or the  deadlines and requirements  table for details. For programs that require test scores, we do not state minimum GRE or GMAT scores. Official scores should be sent to RIT directly from the testing agency using Institute code 2760.

What are the English language test score requirements? As an international student do I need to submit scores?

An official score report for the TOEFL, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic exam, or  RIT English Language Proficiency Test  is required of all international applicants who are not eligible for a waiver. We do not accept letters from your college or university indicating "English proficiency" or letters indicating courses were taught in English in place of official English language test scores. We do not accept Duolingo scores. See the “English Language Test Requirements” section in the  Application Materials  section of the  Application Instructions  for full details.

Do I need to have authored research papers to apply for admission to a doctoral degree?

No, you do not need published research papers to apply for a doctoral degree. A majority of admitted students do not have prior experience authoring research papers. However, admission to a doctoral degree is very competitive, and having published research papers helps strengthen your application.

How many students apply for doctoral study, and how many are admitted?

Admission to an RIT doctoral program is highly competitive. The number of applications received and the number of fully funded opportunities are limited and vary from year to year and by program.

Will the stipend fully cover living costs in the US?

The stipend should cover modest living expenses (housing and food), fees (student activity fee and health services fee), and costs for books, supplies, and some personal expenses. However, each student differs in their preferred living styles and their relative expenses. Doctoral students are permitted to take on other part-time employment so long as it does not interfere with their doctoral work (international students are only able to work on campus, for a total of 20 hours per week including their research positions). On-campus opportunities can be found through Career Connect .

Do doctoral students need to have personal finances available upon arriving at RIT?

Though our Ph.D. is fully funded, students do need to have their own funds available for travel and arrival in the US and to get settled in Rochester immediately upon entering the program. Please be sure to keep this in mind as you consider applying and your finances. If admitted, your first payment/stipend would not be until a few weeks into the program, so you will need to have a foundation of funds available for housing and other living expenses before that.

Is funding throughout the program guaranteed?

Your full tuition and assistantship stipend responsibilities will be determined by your graduate advisor and/or program director. It is our expectation that you will fulfill your duties responsibly and make satisfactory progress towards your degree. Funding in future years will depend on your satisfactory academic and research performance. It is expected that starting your second year, funding will be provided from your college either through a Teaching Assistantship or by your graduate advisor from external funds.

How does it work?

Duration and pattern of study.

An MPhil may be offered on either a full-time or a part-time basis, with a maximum study period of 36 months for full-time study or 72 months for part-time study.

Once you have completed your research you must write a 60,000-word thesis, which you submit and then defend via an oral examination (a viva). The thesis will demonstrate your proficiency in research methods, knowledge and understanding, and a critical evaluation of your academic subject area. Your thesis must meet the expectations specified in the Quality Code .

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold, or be expecting to obtain, a bachelors degree with at least first or upper-second class honours, or an equivalent qualification. However, entry requirements differ between academic areas, and sometimes a taught masters degree is also required. The research topic pages (within research areas ) give details of specific entry requirements, and provide contact details to discuss your suitability for the MPhil.

English language proficiency

In order to study with us, you will need to have a good command of English. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate your competence in the English Language in all four elements (reading, writing, listening and speaking). The University requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any of the four categories (or approved equivalent). You should have your level of proficiency certified through a provider approved by UK Visas and Immigration and provide your certificate and grade with your application.

Application closing date

Entry may be permitted for direct registration with The Open University at the following points of year: October and February. This ensures that students benefit from development and training in peer groups.

For further information on how to apply see our Application process section. Application deadlines may differ between research topics and studentships; full information about the application period for the topic you’re interested is detailed in the research topic pages (within research areas ).
