16 case study examples (+ 3 templates to make your own)

I like to think of case studies as a business's version of a resume. It highlights what the business can do, lends credibility to its offer, and contains only the positive bullet points that paint it in the best light possible.

Imagine if the guy running your favorite taco truck followed you home so that he could "really dig into how that burrito changed your life." I see the value in the practice. People naturally prefer a tried-and-true burrito just as they prefer tried-and-true products or services.

To help you showcase your success and flesh out your burrito questionnaire, I've put together some case study examples and key takeaways.

What is a case study?

A case study is an in-depth analysis of how your business, product, or service has helped past clients. It can be a document, a webpage, or a slide deck that showcases measurable, real-life results.

For example, if you're a SaaS company, you can analyze your customers' results after a few months of using your product to measure its effectiveness. You can then turn this analysis into a case study that further proves to potential customers what your product can do and how it can help them overcome their challenges.

It changes the narrative from "I promise that we can do X and Y for you" to "Here's what we've done for businesses like yours, and we can do it for you, too."

16 case study examples 

While most case studies follow the same structure, quite a few try to break the mold and create something unique. Some businesses lean heavily on design and presentation, while others pursue a detailed, stat-oriented approach. Some businesses try to mix both.

There's no set formula to follow, but I've found that the best case studies utilize impactful design to engage readers and leverage statistics and case details to drive the point home. A case study typically highlights the companies, the challenges, the solution, and the results. The examples below will help inspire you to do it, too.

People love a good farm-to-table coffee story, and boy am I one of them. But I've shared this case study with you for more reasons than my love of coffee. I enjoyed this study because it was written as though it was a letter.

In this case study, the founder of Volcanica Coffee talks about the journey from founding the company to personally struggling with learning and applying digital marketing to finding and enlisting AdRoll's services.

It felt more authentic, less about AdRoll showcasing their worth and more like a testimonial from a grateful and appreciative client. After the story, the case study wraps up with successes, milestones, and achievements. Note that quite a few percentages are prominently displayed at the top, providing supporting evidence that backs up an inspiring story.

Takeaway: Highlight your goals and measurable results to draw the reader in and provide concise, easily digestible information.

This Airtable case study on Taylor Guitars comes as close as one can to an optimal structure. It features a video that represents the artistic nature of the client, highlighting key achievements and dissecting each element of Airtable's influence.

It also supplements each section with a testimonial or quote from the client, using their insights as a catalyst for the case study's narrative. For example, the case study quotes the social media manager and project manager's insights regarding team-wide communication and access before explaining in greater detail.

Takeaway: Highlight pain points your business solves for its client, and explore that influence in greater detail.

My favorite part of Figma's case study is highlighting why EndeavourX chose its solution. You'll notice an entire section on what Figma does for teams and then specifically for EndeavourX.

It also places a heavy emphasis on numbers and stats. The study, as brief as it is, still manages to pack in a lot of compelling statistics about what's possible with Figma.

Takeaway: Showcase the "how" and "why" of your product's differentiators and how they benefit your customers.

Zapier's case study leans heavily on design, using graphics to present statistics and goals in a manner that not only remains consistent with the branding but also actively pushes it forward, drawing users' eyes to the information most important to them. 

The graphics, emphasis on branding elements, and cause/effect style tell the story without requiring long, drawn-out copy that risks boring readers. Instead, the cause and effect are concisely portrayed alongside the client company's information for a brief and easily scannable case study.

Takeaway: Lean on design to call attention to the most important elements of your case study, and make sure it stays consistent with your branding.

In true OpenAI fashion, this case study is a block of text. There's a distinct lack of imagery, but the study features a narrated video walking readers through the product.

The lack of imagery and color may not be the most inviting, but utilizing video format is commendable. It helps thoroughly communicate how OpenAI supported Ironclad in a way that allows the user to sit back, relax, listen, and be impressed. 

Takeaway: Get creative with the media you implement in your case study. Videos can be a very powerful addition when a case study requires more detailed storytelling.

GitHub's case study on Shopify is a light read. It addresses client pain points and discusses the different aspects its product considers and improves for clients. It touches on workflow issues, internal systems, automation, and security. It does a great job of representing what one company can do with GitHub.

To drive the point home, the case study features colorful quote callouts from the Shopify team, sharing their insights and perspectives on the partnership, the key issues, and how they were addressed.

Takeaway: Leverage quotes to boost the authoritativeness and trustworthiness of your case study.

Contentful's case study on Audible features almost every element a case study should. It includes not one but two videos and clearly outlines the challenge, solution, and outcome before diving deeper into what Contentful did for Audible. The language is simple, and the writing is heavy with quotes and personal insights.

This case study is a uniquely original experience. The fact that the companies in question are perhaps two of the most creative brands out there may be the reason. I expected nothing short of a detailed analysis, a compelling story, and video content. 

Takeaway: Inject some brand voice into the case study, and create assets that tell the story for you.

Asana's case study on Zoom is longer than the average piece and features detailed data on Zoom's growth since 2020. Instead of relying on imagery and graphics, it features several quotes and testimonials. 

It's designed to be direct, informative, and promotional. At some point, the case study reads more like a feature list. There were a few sections that felt a tad too promotional for my liking, but to each their own burrito.

Takeaway: Maintain a balance between promotional and informative. You want to showcase the high-level goals your product helped achieve without losing the reader.

I've always been a fan of Mailchimp's comic-like branding, and this case study does an excellent job of sticking to their tradition of making information easy to understand, casual, and inviting.

It features a short video that briefly covers Hickies as a company and Mailchimp's efforts to serve its needs for customer relationships and education processes. Overall, this case study is a concise overview of the partnership that manages to convey success data and tell a story at the same time. What sets it apart is that it does so in a uniquely colorful and brand-consistent manner.

Takeaway: Be concise to provide as much value in as little text as possible.

The gaming industry is notoriously difficult to recruit for, as it requires a very specific set of skills and experience. This case study focuses on how Workday was able to help fill that recruitment gap for NVIDIA, one of the biggest names in the gaming world.

Though it doesn't feature videos or graphics, this case study stood out to me in how it structures information like "key products used" to give readers insight into which tools helped achieve these results.

Takeaway: If your company offers multiple products or services, outline exactly which ones were involved in your case study, so readers can assess each tool.

I'm personally not a big KFC fan, but that's only because I refuse to eat out of a bucket. My aversion to the bucket format aside, Contentful follows its consistent case study format in this one, outlining challenges, solutions, and outcomes before diving into the nitty-gritty details of the project.

Say what you will about KFC, but their primary product (chicken) does present a unique opportunity for wordplay like "Continuing to march to the beat of a digital-first drum(stick)" or "Delivering deep-fried goodness to every channel."

Takeaway: Inject humor into your case study if there's room for it and if it fits your brand.

Twilio does an excellent job of delivering achievements at the very beginning of the case study and going into detail in this two-minute read. While there aren't many graphics, the way quotes from the Intuit team are implemented adds a certain flair to the study and breaks up the sections nicely.

It's simple, concise, and manages to fit a lot of information in easily digestible sections.

Takeaway: Make sure each section is long enough to inform but brief enough to avoid boring readers. Break down information for each section, and don't go into so much detail that you lose the reader halfway through.

Salesforce created a video that accurately summarizes the key points of the case study. Beyond that, the page itself is very light on content, and sections are as short as one paragraph.

I especially like how information is broken down into "What you need to know," "Why it matters," and "What the difference looks like." I'm not ashamed of being spoon-fed information. When it's structured so well and so simply, it makes for an entertaining read.

Benchling is an impressive entity in its own right. Biotech R&D and health care nuances go right over my head. But the research and digging I've been doing in the name of these burritos (case studies) revealed that these products are immensely complex. 

And that's precisely why this case study deserves a read—it succeeds at explaining a complex project that readers outside the industry wouldn't know much about.

Takeaway: Simplify complex information, and walk readers through the company's operations and how your business helped streamline them.

The concision of this case study is refreshing. It features two sections—the challenge and the solution—all in 316 words. This goes to show that your case study doesn't necessarily need to be a four-figure investment with video shoots and studio time. 

Sometimes, the message is simple and short enough to convey in a handful of paragraphs.

Takeaway: Consider what you should include instead of what you can include. Assess the time, resources, and effort you're able and willing to invest in a case study, and choose which elements you want to include from there.

I may be biased, but I'm a big fan of seeing metrics and achievements represented in branded graphics. It can be a jarring experience to navigate a website, then visit a case study page and feel as though you've gone to a completely different website.

The case study is essentially the summary, and the blog article is the detailed analysis that provides context beyond X achievement or Y goal.

Takeaway: Keep your case study concise and informative. Create other resources to provide context under your blog, media or press, and product pages.

If you've got a quick hit of stats you want to show off, try this template. The opening section gives space for a short summary and three visually appealing stats you can highlight, followed by a headline and body where you can break the case study down more thoroughly. This one's pretty simple, with only sections for solutions and results, but you can easily continue the formatting to add more sections as needed.

Whether you want a little structural variation or just like a nice dark green, this template has similar components to the last template but is designed to help tell a story. Tips for writing a case study

Examples are all well and good, but you don't learn how to make a burrito just by watching tutorials on YouTube without knowing what any of the ingredients are. You could , but it probably wouldn't be all that good.

Have an objective: Define your objective by identifying the challenge, solution, and results. Assess your work with the client and focus on the most prominent wins. You're speaking to multiple businesses and industries through the case study, so make sure you know what you want to say to them.

Focus on persuasive data: Growth percentages and measurable results are your best friends. Extract your most compelling data and highlight it in your case study.

Use eye-grabbing graphics: Branded design goes a long way in accurately representing your brand and retaining readers as they review the study. Leverage unique and eye-catching graphics to keep readers engaged. 

Simplify data presentation: Some industries are more complex than others, and sometimes, data can be difficult to understand at a glance. Make sure you present your data in the simplest way possible. Make it concise, informative, and easy to understand.

These items are just a jumping-off point as you develop your criteria.  Once you have a list, run each customer through it to determine your top targets. Approach the ones on the top (your "dream" case study subjects) and work your way down as needed.

Who to interview

You should consider interviewing top-level managers or executives because those are high-profile positions. But consider how close they are to your product and its results.

Focusing on an office manager or engineer who uses your product daily would be better. Look for someone with a courtside view of the effects.

The ways to request customer participation in case studies can vary, but certain principles can improve your chances:

  • Make it easy for customers to work with you, respecting their valuable time. Be well-prepared and minimize their involvement.
  • Emphasize how customers will benefit through increased publicity, revenue opportunities, or recognition for their success. 
  • Acknowledge their contributions and showcase their achievements.
  • Standardizing the request process with a script incorporating these principles can help your team consistently secure case study approvals and track performance.

Step 2: Prepare for the interview

Case study interviews are like school exams. The more prepared you are for them, the better they turn out. Preparing thoroughly also shows participants that you value their time. You don't waste precious minutes rehashing things you should have already known. You focus on getting the information you need as efficiently as possible.

You can conduct your case study interview in multiple formats, from exchanging emails to in-person interviews. This isn't a trivial decision.  As you'll see in the chart below, each format has its unique advantages and disadvantages. 

Seeing each other's facial expressions puts everyone at ease and encourages case study participants to open up.

It's a good format if you're simultaneously conferencing with several people from the customer's team.
Always be on guard for connection issues; not every customer knows the technology.

Audio quality will probably be less good than on the phone. When multiple people are talking, pieces of conversation can be lost.
It is a more personal than email because you can hear someone's tone. You can encourage them to continue if they get really excited about certain answers.

Convenient and immediate. Dial a number and start interviewing without ever leaving the office.
It isn't as personal as a video chat or an in-person interview because you can't see the customer's face, and nonverbal cues might be missed.


Don't get direct quotes like you would with email responses. The only way to preserve the interview is to remember to have it recorded.
The most personal interview style. It feels like an informal conversation, making it easier to tell stories and switch seamlessly between topics.

Humanizes the customer's experience and allows you to put a face to the incredible results.
Puts a lot of pressure on customers who are shy or introverted – especially if they're being recorded.


Requires the most commitment for the participant – travel, dressing up, dealing with audiovisual equipment, etc.
Gives customers the most flexibility with respect to scheduling. They can answer a few questions, see to their obligations, and return to them at their convenience.

No coordination of schedules is needed. Each party can fulfill their obligations whenever they're able to.
There is less opportunity for customers to go “off script” and tell compelling anecdotes that your questions might have overlooked.

Some of the study participant's personalities might be lost in their typed responses. It's harder to sense their enthusiasm or frustration.

You'll also have to consider who will ask and answer the questions during your case study interview. It's wise to consider this while considering the case study format.  The number of participants factors into which format will work best. Pulling off an in-person interview becomes much harder if you're trying to juggle four or five people's busy schedules. Try a video conference instead.

Before interviewing your case study participant, it is crucial to identify the specific questions that need to be asked.  It's essential to thoroughly evaluate your collaboration with the client and understand how your product's contributions impact the company. 

Remember that structuring your case study is akin to crafting a compelling narrative. To achieve this, follow a structured approach:

  • Beginning of your story. Delve into the customer's challenge that ultimately led them to do business with you. What were their problems like? What drove them to make a decision finally? Why did they choose you?
  • The middle of the case study.  Your audience also wants to know about the experience of working with you. Your customer has taken action to address their problems. What happened once you got on board?
  • An ending that makes you the hero.  Describe the specific results your company produced for the customer. How has the customer's business (and life) changed once they implemented your solution?

Sample questions for the case study interview

If you're preparing for a case study interview, here are some sample case study research questions to help you get started:

  • What challenges led you to seek a solution?
  • When did you realize the need for immediate action? Was there a tipping point?
  • How did you decide on the criteria for choosing a B2B solution, and who was involved?
  • What set our product or service apart from others you considered?
  • How was your experience working with us post-purchase?
  • Were there any pleasant surprises or exceeded expectations during our collaboration?
  • How smoothly did your team integrate our solution into their workflows?
  • How long before you started seeing positive results?
  • How have you benefited from our products or services?
  • How do you measure the value our product or service provides?

Step 3: Conduct the interview

Preparing for case study interviews can be different from everyday conversations. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Create a comfortable atmosphere.  Before diving into the discussion, talk about their business and personal interests. Ensure everyone is at ease, and address any questions or concerns.
  • Prioritize key questions.  Lead with your most crucial questions to respect your customer's time. Interview lengths can vary, so starting with the essentials ensures you get the vital information.
  • Be flexible.  Case study interviews don't have to be rigid. If your interviewee goes "off script," embrace it. Their spontaneous responses often provide valuable insights.
  • Record the interview.  If not conducted via email, ask for permission to record the interview. This lets you focus on the conversation and capture valuable quotes without distractions.

Step 4: Figure out who will create the case study

When creating written case studies for your business, deciding who should handle the writing depends on cost, perspective, and revisions.

Outsourcing might be pricier, but it ensures a professionally crafted outcome. On the other hand, in-house writing has its considerations, including understanding your customers and products. 

Technical expertise and equipment are needed for video case studies, which often leads companies to consider outsourcing due to production and editing costs. 

Tip: When outsourcing work, it's essential to clearly understand pricing details to avoid surprises and unexpected charges during payment.

Step 5: Utilize storytelling

Understanding and applying storytelling elements can make your case studies unforgettable, offering a competitive edge.

Every great study follows a narrative arc (also called a "story arc"). This arc represents how a character faces challenges, struggles against raising stakes, and encounters a formidable obstacle before the tension resolves.

In a case study narrative, consider:

  • Exposition. Provide background information about the company, revealing their "old life" before becoming your customer.
  • Inciting incident. Highlight the problem that drove the customer to seek a solution, creating a sense of urgency.
  • Obstacles (rising action). Describe the customer's journey in researching and evaluating solutions, building tension as they explore options.
  • Midpoint. Explain what made the business choose your product or service and what set you apart.
  • Climax. Showcase the success achieved with your product.
  • Denouement. Describe the customer's transformed business and end with a call-to-action for the reader to take the next step.

Step 6: Design the case study

The adage "Don't judge a book by its cover" is familiar, but people tend to do just that quite often!

A poor layout can deter readers even if you have an outstanding case study. To create an engaging case study, follow these steps:

  • Craft a compelling title. Just like you wouldn't read a newspaper article without an eye-catching headline, the same goes for case studies. Start with a title that grabs attention.
  • Organize your content. Break down your content into different sections, such as challenges, results, etc. Each section can also include subsections. This case study approach divides the content into manageable portions, preventing readers from feeling overwhelmed by lengthy blocks of text.
  • Conciseness is key. Keep your case study as concise as possible. The most compelling case studies are precisely long enough to introduce the customer's challenge, experience with your solution, and outstanding results. Prioritize clarity and omit any sections that may detract from the main storyline.
  • Utilize visual elements. To break up text and maintain reader interest, incorporate visual elements like callout boxes, bulleted lists, and sidebars.
  • Include charts and images. Summarize results and simplify complex topics by including pictures and charts. Visual aids enhance the overall appeal of your case study.
  • Embrace white space. Avoid overwhelming walls of text to prevent reader fatigue. Opt for plenty of white space, use shorter paragraphs, and employ subsections to ensure easy readability and navigation.
  • Enhance video case studies. In video case studies, elements like music, fonts, and color grading are pivotal in setting the right tone. Choose music that complements your message and use it strategically throughout your story. Carefully select fonts to convey the desired style, and consider how lighting and color grading can influence the mood. These elements collectively help create the desired tone for your video case study.

Step 7: Edits and revisions

Once you've finished the interview and created your case study, the hardest part is over. Now's the time for editing and revision. This might feel frustrating for impatient B2B marketers, but it can turn good stories into great ones.

Ideally, you'll want to submit your case study through two different rounds of editing and revisions:

  • Internal review. Seek feedback from various team members to ensure your case study is captivating and error-free. Gather perspectives from marketing, sales, and those in close contact with customers for well-rounded insights. Use patterns from this feedback to guide revisions and apply lessons to future case studies.
  • Customer feedback. Share the case study with customers to make them feel valued and ensure accuracy. Let them review quotes and data points, as they are the "heroes" of the story, and their logos will be prominently featured. This step maintains positive customer relationships.

Case study mistakes to avoid

  • Ensure easy access to case studies on your website.
  • Spotlight the customer, not just your business.
  • Tailor each case study to a specific audience.
  • Avoid excessive industry jargon in your content.

Step 8: Publishing

Take a moment to proofread your case study one more time carefully. Even if you're reasonably confident you've caught all the errors, it's always a good idea to check. Your case study will be a valuable marketing tool for years, so it's worth the investment to ensure it's flawless. Once done, your case study is all set to go!

Consider sharing a copy of the completed case study with your customer as a thoughtful gesture. They'll likely appreciate it; some may want to keep it for their records. After all, your case study wouldn't have been possible without their help, and they deserve to see the final product.

Where you publish your case study depends on its role in your overall marketing strategy. If you want to reach as many people as possible with your case study, consider publishing it on your website and social media platforms. 

Tip: Some companies prefer to keep their case studies exclusive, making them available only to those who request them. This approach is often taken to control access to valuable information and to engage more deeply with potential customers who express specific interests. It can create a sense of exclusivity and encourage interested parties to engage directly with the company.

Step 9: Case study distribution

When sharing individual case studies, concentrate on reaching the audience with the most influence on purchasing decisions

Here are some common distribution channels to consider:

  • Sales teams. Share case studies to enhance customer interactions, retention , and upselling among your sales and customer success teams. Keep them updated on new studies and offer easily accessible formats like PDFs or landing page links.
  • Company website. Feature case studies on your website to establish authority and provide valuable information to potential buyers. Organize them by categories such as location, size, industry, challenges, and products or services used for effective presentation.
  • Events. Use live events like conferences and webinars to distribute printed case study copies, showcase video case studies at trade show booths, and conclude webinars with links to your case study library. This creative approach blends personal interactions with compelling content.
  • Industry journalists. Engage relevant industry journalists to gain media coverage by identifying suitable publications and journalists covering related topics. Building relationships is vital, and platforms like HARO (Help A Reporter Out) can facilitate connections, especially if your competitors have received coverage before.

  • Comfort on camera.  Not everyone feels at ease on camera. Nervousness or a different on-screen persona can impact the effectiveness of the testimonial, and discovering this late in the process can be problematic.

Written or video case studies: Which is right for you?

Now that you know the pros and cons of each, how do you choose which is right for you?

One of the most significant factors in doing video case studies can be the technical expertise and equipment required for a high level of production quality. Whether you have the budget to do this in-house or hire a production company can be one of the major deciding factors.

Still, written or video doesn't have to be an either-or decision. Some B2B companies are using both formats. They can complement each other nicely, minimizing the downsides mentioned above and reaching your potential customers where they prefer.

Let's say you're selling IT network security. What you offer is invaluable but complicated. You could create a short (three- or four-minute) video case study to get attention and touch on the significant benefits of your services. As a result, in many situations, how you treat your customers — that is, your customer experience — has more of an impact on your business success than your pricing or even your products. Customer experience is the overall impression you give your customers, and it influences their perception of your brand across each stage and touchpoint of the customer journey.

This means that businesses need to focus on every step of the buyer journey, identifying hurdles on that path and offering new opportunities to create a great customer experience. Specifically, there are a few tactical ways you can build a customer focus into your business:

  • Make customer experience a priority by gathering insights from everyone on your team

2. A powerful business idea.

The oldest companies in the world have been around for as long as 1,400 years . But many companies struggle to last: In 2023 alone, over 18,000 U.S. businesses filed for bankruptcy .

Every business is born from an idea. Some ideas are riskier than others. Some ideas seem like a good plan but fizzle out over time. In my experience, there are a few steps you can take to identify an idea that will make your business a success.

First, start with what you know. If you’ve ever had a hobby or job you’re passionate about, you know that every niche is more complex than it seems. As you learn more, you get a clearer picture of the joys and challenges below the surface.

For example, a gamer who’s obsessed with Stardew Valley is a totally different customer from a Half-Life player. If you try to build a business that targets all video game players, rather than a more specific sub-group, you might struggle to meet the needs of this diverse customer base.

Next, you’ll want to talk to your community. Whether it’s family and friends or an online group, it’s smart to test out the value of your ideas with a group of people. This can help you refine your idea and determine common objections.

Finally, it’s essential to do your research before you launch your business idea. If you want to create a product or service that people are willing to pay for, it has to be unique, useful, and high-quality. That kind of idea may take some time to polish before it’s ready for purchase.

3. Offering value to your target audience.

A great idea is important, but it isn’t enough to build a successful business. Indeed, in my experience, it’s easy to come up with a great idea. What’s difficult is executing that idea effectively.

Moreover, even if you’ve executed your current idea, no great product is ever finished. To continue to offer value, many products need constant updates in response to customer reviews and internal feedback.

Pro tip: It’s not just about the product. Even if your product or service is perfect, the foundation of any successful business is trust.

To develop trust, your business needs to go above and beyond target audience expectations . There are a few strategies that I’ve found can be particularly helpful in building and sustaining trust. First, it’s important to make sure that your product does exactly what you say it does. Never over-promise, or sell functionality your product doesn’t have.

It’s also critical to provide value throughout the customer experience, from support to instructions to your return policy. After all, value isn’t just the cost of making your product or what you ask in exchange for it. It’s customers’ perceptions and how reliably you meet or exceed their expectations.

For example, the athleisure brand PopFlex doesn’t just sell clothes. It also runs a fitness blog called Blogilates that offers a wide range of additional resources to support its customers.

To run a successful business, it’s important to add value to your target audience.

To be sure, networking is a buzzword that can be off-putting to some. But in reality, networking is just about fostering relationships. If you support businesses that complement yours, they’re likely to return that investment and support, creating a steady stream of referrals and connections that can help your business grow.

To be a great partner to the people in your network, start with your common values. Reach out to people in your local community and online who align with the mission and ideals you strive for personally and in your business. Then, create clear expectations and maintain friendly and consistent communication.

5. Competitive analysis.

Some ideas may be so unique that there’s little to no competition, but most businesses will be entering an already crowded market. To succeed in a market that’s full of established providers, you need a unique spin on your product or niche — and that means conducting a competitive analysis.

Pro tip: When it comes to beating out the competition, founder of OswaldoMedia Oleg Segal argues that “The key is to leverage your business’ uniqueness and serve a niche your larger competitor doesn’t cater to.”

A competitive analysis can help you learn about your top competitors’ products, marketing, and approaches to sales. In some cases, you may learn things that lead you to take your business in a new direction, while in others, you might find a need or problem that only your business can solve. This process can also help you set benchmarks and understand what it will take to reach your business goals.

The more organized you are, the more useful your competitive research will be. It’s also a good idea to perform this analysis on a consistent basis — ideally, as frequently as once a quarter — so you can respond quickly to changes in your industry.

6. Choosing the right pricing.

In my experience, getting your pricing strategy right is one of the most important factors for building a sustainable business. If your prices are too high, you’ll struggle to sell … and if they’re too low, you won’t be able to cover your costs.

Pricing your products to sell is a skill that may take some time to learn. At the same time, setting prices is also one of the first things you’ll need to do when starting a business. As such, it’s important to think carefully about whether your products are priced appropriately.

Are you pulling in enough revenue to stay afloat? How many units will you need to sell each period to reach your revenue and profitability goals? Asking questions like these (and consistently documenting your answers) will help you keep your business running and thriving.

7. Long-term goals and vision.

People start businesses for many different reasons. Some want to make ends meet with a side gig. Others want to replace their full-time job and be their own boss. Whatever your reason, decide upfront how you want your business to scale. If you aren’t thoughtful about your long-term plans, you might not be prepared for what could happen.

For example, marketing can be unpredictable. Businesses sometimes go viral for doing great work and aren’t prepared for the influx of new customers. Knowing in advance whether you’ll meet the moment or let it pass you by can save you from missing out on unexpected opportunities or, worse still, from having to close your business because you weren’t prepared to scale.

What Is the Harvard Business School Case Study Method?

The case study method , or case method , is a learning technique in which you’re presented with a real-world business challenge and asked how you’d solve it. After working through it yourself and with peers, you’re told how the scenario played out.

HBS pioneered the case method in 1922. Shortly before, in 1921, the first case was written.

“How do you go into an ambiguous situation and get to the bottom of it?” says HBS Professor Jan Rivkin, former senior associate dean and chair of HBS's master of business administration (MBA) program, in a video about the case method . “That skill—the skill of figuring out a course of inquiry to choose a course of action—that skill is as relevant today as it was in 1921.”

Originally developed for the in-person MBA classroom, HBS Online adapted the case method into an engaging, interactive online learning experience in 2014.

In HBS Online courses , you learn about each case from the business professional who experienced it. After reviewing their videos, you’re prompted to take their perspective and explain how you’d handle their situation.

You then get to read peers’ responses, “star” them, and comment to further the discussion. Afterward, you learn how the professional handled it and their key takeaways.

HBS Online’s adaptation of the case method incorporates the famed HBS “cold call,” in which you’re called on at random to make a decision without time to prepare.

“Learning came to life!” said Sheneka Balogun , chief administration officer and chief of staff at LeMoyne-Owen College, of her experience taking the Credential of Readiness (CORe) program . “The videos from the professors, the interactive cold calls where you were randomly selected to participate, and the case studies that enhanced and often captured the essence of objectives and learning goals were all embedded in each module. This made learning fun, engaging, and student-friendly.”

1. take new perspectives.

The case method prompts you to consider a scenario from another person’s perspective. To work through the situation and come up with a solution, you must consider their circumstances, limitations, risk tolerance, stakeholders, resources, and potential consequences to assess how to respond.

Taking on new perspectives not only can help you navigate your own challenges but also others’. Putting yourself in someone else’s situation to understand their motivations and needs can go a long way when collaborating with stakeholders.

2. Hone Your Decision-Making Skills

Another skill you can build is the ability to make decisions effectively . The case study method forces you to use limited information to decide how to handle a problem—just like in the real world.

Throughout your career, you’ll need to make difficult decisions with incomplete or imperfect information—and sometimes, you won’t feel qualified to do so. Learning through the case method allows you to practice this skill in a low-stakes environment. When facing a real challenge, you’ll be better prepared to think quickly, collaborate with others, and present and defend your solution.

3. Become More Open-Minded

As you collaborate with peers on responses, it becomes clear that not everyone solves problems the same way. Exposing yourself to various approaches and perspectives can help you become a more open-minded professional.

When you’re part of a diverse group of learners from around the world, your experiences, cultures, and backgrounds contribute to a range of opinions on each case.

On the HBS Online course platform, you’re prompted to view and comment on others’ responses, and discussion is encouraged. This practice of considering others’ perspectives can make you more receptive in your career.

“You’d be surprised at how much you can learn from your peers,” said Ratnaditya Jonnalagadda , a software engineer who took CORe.

In addition to interacting with peers in the course platform, Jonnalagadda was part of the HBS Online Community , where he networked with other professionals and continued discussions sparked by course content.

“You get to understand your peers better, and students share examples of businesses implementing a concept from a module you just learned,” Jonnalagadda said. “It’s a very good way to cement the concepts in one's mind.”

“Each case offers an opportunity for students to see what resonates with them, what excites them, what bores them, which role they could imagine inhabiting in their careers,” says former HBS Dean Nitin Nohria in the Harvard Business Review . “Cases stimulate curiosity about the range of opportunities in the world and the many ways that students can make a difference as leaders.”

Through the case method, you can “try on” roles you may not have considered and feel more prepared to change or advance your career .

5. Build Your Self-Confidence

Finally, learning through the case study method can build your confidence. Each time you assume a business leader’s perspective, aim to solve a new challenge, and express and defend your opinions and decisions to peers, you prepare to do the same in your career.

According to a 2022 City Square Associates survey , 84 percent of HBS Online learners report feeling more confident making business decisions after taking a course.

“Self-confidence is difficult to teach or coach, but the case study method seems to instill it in people,” Nohria says in the Harvard Business Review . “There may well be other ways of learning these meta-skills, such as the repeated experience gained through practice or guidance from a gifted coach. However, under the direction of a masterful teacher, the case method can engage students and help them develop powerful meta-skills like no other form of teaching.”

Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2021

Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy. 

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

  • Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
  • Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
  • The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
  • Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
  • A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
  • Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
  • The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

At this first reading, it is essential to pay close attention to the behavior and motivations of stakeholders as well as any information that appears contradictory or extraneous.

Step two is identifying the core problem and associated symptoms, so as to create an accurate picture. Your paper must contain clear, comprehensive descriptions of both its causes and effects. Likewise, all problems should relate to models or theories discussed in class or assigned readings. Establishing the core issues also plays an integral part in creating recommendations to solve case-study problems effectively; failing to properly define core problems could lead to ineffective solutions or unexpected repercussions.

Case study analysis involves conducting an in-depth examination of a real-life situation, often used in business, social sciences and other fields to gain better insight into a specific issue or situation. Its aim is to create new understanding, illustrate theories or test hypotheses.

Case study scenarios often feature problems of various forms and severity that range in impact, severity and relative importance to an organization. They can manifest in its decision-making, operational or cultural structures or manifest as demands and claims from external stakeholders.

Once the core issues have been identified, it’s important to explore alternative solutions. This step should include an evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, risks and their impact on long-term and short-term goals as well as whether these solutions could create any additional issues. Be prepared for discussion regarding any unintended ramifications such as new issues arising as a result. It may be beneficial to use anecdotal evidence from personal experience or other sources for additional input.

Once you have reviewed all available options, it is necessary to propose specific courses of action and justify why these are the optimal solutions. This section should combine with your alternative solutions section and should provide a thorough account of how you would implement your recommendations based on course readings, class discussions and research findings; introspectively consider their relationship with course content/reading assignments/practical case study scenario(s).

After reviewing the main problems and solutions presented in your case study scenario, it’s important to come up with recommendations tailored specifically to your research. Be sure to justify why these suggestions are relevant and practical according to what you learned through analysis.

Recommendations must reflect what you’ve learned through analysis and be implementable within the case study context. Furthermore, it is crucial that you consider their implications on issues like equity and inclusion when making recommendations.

A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject, such as a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. Case studies are commonly used in social, educational, clinical, and business research.

A case study research design usually involves qualitative methods , but quantitative methods are sometimes also used. Case studies are good for describing , comparing, evaluating and understanding different aspects of a research problem .

A case study is an appropriate research design when you want to gain concrete, contextual, in-depth knowledge about a specific real-world subject. It allows you to explore the key characteristics, meanings, and implications of the case.

Case studies are often a good choice in a thesis or dissertation . They keep your project focused and manageable when you don’t have the time or resources to do large-scale research.

Example of an outlying case studyIn the 1960s the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania was discovered to have extremely low rates of heart disease compared to the US average. It became an important case study for understanding previously neglected causes of heart disease.

However, you can also choose a more common or representative case to exemplify a particular category, experience or phenomenon.

Example of a representative case studyIn the 1920s, two sociologists used Muncie, Indiana as a case study of a typical American city that supposedly exemplified the changing culture of the US at the time.

While case studies focus more on concrete details than general theories, they should usually have some connection with theory in the field. This way the case study is not just an isolated description, but is integrated into existing knowledge about the topic. It might aim to:

  • Exemplify a theory by showing how it explains the case under investigation
  • Expand on a theory by uncovering new concepts and ideas that need to be incorporated
  • Challenge a theory by exploring an outlier case that doesn’t fit with established assumptions

To ensure that your analysis of the case has a solid academic grounding, you should conduct a literature review of sources related to the topic and develop a theoretical framework . This means identifying key concepts and theories to guide your analysis and interpretation.

There are many different research methods you can use to collect data on your subject. Case studies tend to focus on qualitative data using methods such as interviews , observations , and analysis of primary and secondary sources (e.g., newspaper articles, photographs, official records). Sometimes a case study will also collect quantitative data.

Example of a mixed methods case studyFor a case study of a wind farm development in a rural area, you could collect quantitative data on employment rates and business revenue, collect qualitative data on local people’s perceptions and experiences, and analyze local and national media coverage of the development.

The aim is to gain as thorough an understanding as possible of the case and its context.

In writing up the case study, you need to bring together all the relevant aspects to give as complete a picture as possible of the subject.

How you report your findings depends on the type of research you are doing. Some case studies are structured like a standard scientific paper or thesis , with separate sections or chapters for the methods , results and discussion .

Others are written in a more narrative style, aiming to explore the case from various angles and analyze its meanings and implications (for example, by using textual analysis or discourse analysis ).

In all cases, though, make sure to give contextual details about the case, connect it back to the literature and theory, and discuss how it fits into wider patterns or debates.

  • Read and analyze the case. Each case is a 10-20 page document written from the viewpoint of a real person leading a real organization. In addition to background information on the situation, each case ends in a key decision to be made. Your job is to sift through the information, incomplete by design, and decide what you would do.
  • Discuss the case. Each morning, you’ll bring your ideas to a small team of classmates from diverse professional backgrounds, your discussion group, to share your findings and listen to theirs. Together, you begin to see the case from different perspectives, better preparing you for class.
  • Engage in class. Be prepared to change the way you think as you debate with classmates the best path forward for this organization. The highly engaged conversation is facilitated by the faculty member, but it’s driven by your classmates’ comments and experiences. HBS brings together amazingly talented people from diverse backgrounds and puts that experience front and center. Students do the majority of the talking (and lots of active listening), and your job is to better understand the decision at hand, what you would do in the case protagonist’s shoes, and why. I’ve been working with many businesses as an external consultant and have found that there are often examples of case study solutions that are quite difficult to implement into a company’s marketing and accounting systems. That’s because the facts and findings of each case study, even when presented in a logical order, can be complicated and the required reporting and financial statements not always accurate. That means if your accounting and marketing departments are already using these types of solutions and you want to enhance your existing systems, you’ll find them woefully inadequate for doing what they are intended to do.

In this article I’ll cover three examples of case study solutions that you need to look for in a Business Services department. They all are very cost effective, yet provide very accurate, easily communicated information about customer behavior, which you may want to take advantage of to help make management decision making easier.

* Corporate Accounting and Marketing Services: We often see the use of “finance” as part of the description of a marketing services or accounting department. While it is usually correct to say that finance is part of any marketing and account services department, sometimes it can be useful to break it out into its own group of business services. Finance is primarily concerned with the processing of monetary transactions, such as invoices, bills, bank transfers, etc.

Finance is also concerned with recording all business expenses.  Case Study Solutions The accounting side of finance is usually concerned with reporting and analyzing the accounting transactions. The payment processing side of finance is responsible for keeping track of all payments made and accounts receivable.

* Case Studies: One of the best examples of case study solutions that many businesses should implement is a case study of a specific customer or client that shows how their business has changed because of a new service or product that was offered. This type of information provides valuable insights and allows managers to see what it is about a particular project that brought about the customer’s change of heart.

Finance is also responsible for analyzing the cost of a new product or service. The benefits that it will generate to the company can be very positive but it’s not necessarily the only way to derive those benefits. As long as that is acknowledged, then this is an example of case study solutions that can easily benefit both the marketing and finance departments.

* Advertising and Marketing Consulting: This is a specialty and there are no two ways about it. If you are looking for a specialized consulting firm, you’ll find one in the advertising and marketing fields. You’ll find several examples of case study solutions in this area of business and it makes sense to begin by providing the client with a brief outline of the solutions you have already implemented and the benefits that have come from them.

One of the most compelling examples of case study solutions for the marketing and finance departments is a case study of a client that was working with a new client that had been following the company for a few years and had recently gone in for a big advertising campaign. Since this was not a business that had been in the same market for years, they had to rely on some fairly old advertising strategies, which did not appear to be working at all. Then came the implementation of a new “big spend” advertising campaign.

The results were impressive, the advertising clearly worked, the client was pleased and the company made a great deal of money off that campaign. This case was a perfect example of the benefits of implementing a unique marketing plan that utilizes a more targeted approach to advertising.

* Accounting: Some business services departments are more suited to working with a corporate accounting and bookkeeping department. Others are better suited to work with a business management accounting team.

Most of the time, the accounting departments that have been working with a customer for a while are more suited to having a clear understanding of what is happening. For example, it is common for the accounting team that has been working with a company for a long time to have an intuitive feel for the customer behavior and way the company operates. Many of the customers and clients will have built up habits that the accounting team can better understand.

My goal is to help you realize that the same is true of the external consultant. such as me who works with corporate, government, nonprofit and non-profit organizations.

Types of Case Studies

There are many different types of case studies that have been successful. I have provided some examples here. They all may be adapted to fit your own needs, but you should see how important it is to understand how these techniques are applied in business.

Marketing Case Studies. Brand new products are introduced to the market. Marketing is a critical part of launching a new product. It should be explored to help enhance the success of the product launch. Sales Case Studies. The sales cycle of a company can be significantly improved by evaluating the performance of their sales personnel. How can one make a difference? What must be done? These are the questions that need to be answered to really improve the sales cycle.

Finance Case Studies. Many businesses do not manage their finances properly. If they cannot find a way to make their finances successful then they will struggle to grow and prosper. Case studies should be done to help identify ways to make finance more successful. Marketing Case Studies. A company launches a new product. After launching this product they find that their customers are very responsive to their marketing messages.

Finance Case Studies. A business wants to invest in a new product, but they don’t want to spend the money on advertising. Case studies can show them how their marketing can be successful by analyzing the results of their campaign.

Sales Case Studies. A company’s sales team is having trouble with their sales presentations. They find that their marketing is not effective. In addition, they find that their customers are not responding to their message. Marketing Case Studies. A company opens a new store and their sales presentations are not very effective. They need to re-examine their sales presentations and learn more about how to make them effective.

Finance Case Studies. When a company is trying to decide what types of companies to invest in, they see that there are certain types of businesses that can be made successful. These businesses are termed as “resourceful”. Case studies can show that resourceful businesses can perform well under market conditions.

Business Case Studies. When a business has run into a difficulty,  Technology of Case Study Solution  one will see that the person or persons handling the problem are not effective. When one takes a look at how to make the problem improves, they can see how they can improve their skills and techniques. This will cause the business to be successful. Finance Case Studies. A business tries to start up but is unsuccessful because of a lack of funds. When they take a look at how to raise the capital they can improve their performance and get started sooner.

The examples given here may not be the type of Case Studies that is right for you, but they can be used to help you see how all the techniques are related. It can also be used to help you avoid common mistakes when handling cases.

Steps in Solving Case Study

Cases are problems that you may be facing and you need to understand how the process of Case Study Solving goes on. You have to understand how the working process will be in solving your case. A Method is the way or technique that will be used by the company or organization to solve the problem. The way the Company solves it will be decided according to the situation. For example, if you have a broken water pipe in your home then the Company will use the process of curing a leaky pipe.

There are many different types of Methods and the matter will be decided by the type of Problem and the Customer and the End Users of the product or Service. Here we will discuss two important steps in Case Study Solving. The first step in solving is known as the Nature of Problem. This is the same as the subject of the Case. If you are an Advertiser and you are faced with the case of Advert Problem then you will use the problem of the Problem.

The second step is the interaction between the company and the Customer’s needs. The Company will need to identify what the end user wants are in order to be able to come up with a solution. Then there are also new customers. These Customers usually don’t have any problem with the Service or the product or the Company. They may have some complaints, but the Company will have to search for the cause of the complaint.

The Customer is not the only Person who have to be considered, but the need for the Product and the Service and the nature of the Problem is also important. For example, if there is a problem with the printer, then the Company will need to make sure that the Printer works properly or if the printer doesn’t work properly the Company will need to know the cause of the failure of the Printer.

The method and the process of solving the problem are very important. For example, if you have a company that needs to install a freezer in your home then you will need to consider how the company will use the ice machine.  Introduction Case Study Solution The company will use the process of preventing the freezers from freezing down.

After identifying the problem and identifying the methods then there is one step of the Case Study Solution. The company will need to identify how much money they will have to spend to be able to solve the problem. This amount of money will be set by the company and it will be known as the Cost of Solution.

The Cost of Solution can range from very small to very large. When the Cost of Solution is small then the Company may not spend the amount of money that is needed to be able to solve the problem. It is also possible for the company to choose a method of resolution that will solve the problem. The Company should always have a deadline for the Solution to be implemented. The deadline must be kept so that the business can maintain the integrity of the process and will be able to spend the necessary time for Solution.

If the company has not solved the problem within the deadline then the company will need to know why it has not been solved. There are many reasons for failing to solve the problem and these reasons may include non-communication or poor support from the Company. If the Company has failed to solve the problem then the case will be considered closed and the company will be required to wait for another opportunity.
