A movie you recently watched

Talk about a movie you recently watched recently. You should say:

  • What was the movie?
  • When and where did you watch it?
  • Did you like it? Why?

You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Sample Answer 1

Lately, I haven’t had much time to go out for a movie since I’ve been up to my eyeballs in reports and presentations. Hence, to relax and boost my mood, I rented some good old movies and made myself some healthy snacks for a late-night treat. “Silver Linings Playbook” is one of my all-time favorites and I’ve lost count how many times I replayed it.

The last time I watched it was a week ago on Saturday night. Oscar-nominated movies were usually not my taste due to their complexity and lack of entertainment but Silver Linings Playbook was an exception. I’ve always preferred something a little sentimental, light-hearted, yet meaningful and this movie had it all. Silver Linings Playbook was an adaptation from the novel written by Matthew Quick, starring two incredibly talented actors Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

This romantic comedy movie was about two wounded souls who once again found beauty in the most unexpected place. Pat (Bradley), a former teacher, was just released from a mental institution and trying to reconcile with his cheated wife despite his family’s protest. He met Tiffany (Jennifer), a woman with problems of her own, and things got complicated. Two people bearing hidden scars with no hope in the future finally had lights in their lives again.

The movie was not heavy at all but extremely entertaining with some laugh-out-loud moments. No matter how many times I’ve watched it, I still got emotional every time I replayed it. The underlying message was also a shout-out to anyone who believes they have hit rock bottom: “When one door closes, another door opens”. Therefore, keep moving forward and don’t lose hope. If anyone runs out of movies to watch, I highly recommend the “Silver Linings Playbook” as a change of appetite.

Sample Answer 2

Watching movies is one of my hobbies. To be more specific, I enjoy the animated movies more than any other types of movies. The stories and plots of such movies are great and enjoyable. Besides, I also enjoy the making of such movies – they require more focus and attention from the makers. I am happy to discuss the movie that I have recently watched.

The movie I watched was Kung Fu Panda 3. This is the latest instalment of the series and the two earlier series were heavily successful. This instalment has a different plot than the earlier parts. This movie shows that Po meets with his own people – the other Pandas at the Panda village. But he experiences another problem with this meeting and has to play the role of rescuer against the problem. Accordingly, he teaches and forms his own soldiers to fight against the evil and finally, wins the battle.

I watched the movie a couple of days ago. On that day, I did not attend my college for physical illness. As I had to stay at home, I decided to pass some quality moments. I sit to enjoy some television shows. While browsing on the television channels, I found that one of the movie-showing channels is telecasting the movie. I missed the initial part of this movie but later guessed the events. It was almost noon when the movie began and continued for over two hours. Actually, the movie run time is less than two hours I think and it is the advertisement which makes the movies longer than they actually are. So, it was a bit distressing for me to sit around the advertising hours during the movie time.

I love to watch movies with my friends. But this time, I was alone. Though one of my friends was supposed to come to meet me, he could not keep the promise for some other reasons. I asked my younger sibling to be with me during the movie time. But he also denied showing some excuses. As a result, I was all alone to enjoy the movie. In fact, I do not find it interesting to enjoy a movie alone. One should talk with the other viewers about different aspects of the movie, make comments on the movie-making process, share relevant information with each other and more. When all the things are done, the movie becomes more enjoying. And for that, you will need at least another viewer with you. But I could not manage so, and hence, I had to watch the movie alone. But I discussed several aspects with myself and compared the events together.

I liked this animated movie for some particular motives. This appears as an educative movie to me. In fact, I have watched the earlier episodes of this series and got entertained. But this particular instalment was a bit different. The movie dealt with the issues like how Po trained up his own people and engaged them in fighting against Kai, another spirit warrior. He took lots of responsibilities and also the assistance of his martial art companions. Besides, the direction of the movie was wonderful. All the shots were perfect. I know that a good number of people had worked hard to make it a success and they are successful in every term of the movie. So it received positive criticisms all around.

Talk about a movie or performance that you watched recently.

Please say :

What was it about?

When and where did you watch it?

Did you like it? Why?

Well, to tell you the truth, I am not a movie buff. However, whenever stultified, I prefer watching something spellbinding, be it a movie or a web series. So, just last week, when I was finding it difficult to sleep at night, I began navigating through the options available on Netflix. And then, I stumbled upon Kodachrome.

The movie was about Matt, a struggling executive. He found his world going upside down the moment his estranged father’s nurse showed up in his office unexpectedly. Matt’s father, who was a well-acclaimed journalist, was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and his last wish was to go on a road trip with Matt – from New York to Kansas. He wanted to process his last Kodachrome film rolls before closing his lab forever.

One of the reasons why I liked this movie is because it is road trip-oriented. The movie speaks largely about relishing the moments of life and never regretting anything. When it comes to movies based on the theme of a road trip, the journey is highlighted better than the destination. And that is exactly what this movie celebrates as well. Right from the presentation to the lessons, the movie is enthralling and hooking till the end.

I recently watched "Dune," a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is based on the novel by Frank Herbert and is set in a distant future where noble families control planets and battle over a valuable resource known as "spice”. It is quite interesting.

I watched "Dune" last weekend at a local cinema. It was an edge-of-the-seat experience to see it on the big screen, surrounded by impressive visuals and sound effects that enhanced the greatness of the film.

I really liked the movie as it impressed me with its stunning visuals, intricate storyline, and strong performances by the cast. Denis Villeneuve's direction effectively captured the grandeur and complexity of the original novel, while the actors, especially Timothée Chalamet as the hero, delivered an outstanding performance and moved the movie to the next level!

Band 7 Sample Answer:

Recently, I had the pleasure of watching a movie titled “The Green Mile.” It’s a 1999 American drama film directed by Frank Darabont and based on the novel by Stephen King. The story is set in the 1930s and revolves around a death row prison guard, played by Tom Hanks, who encounters a prisoner with supernatural abilities.

I decided to watch this movie because it had received several awards and accolades, and I had heard great things about it. The film’s premise, the blend of drama and the supernatural, intrigued me. I went in with high expectations, anticipating a gripping and emotionally charged experience.

After watching “The Green Mile,” I was thoroughly impressed. The film’s narrative was compelling, and the character development was outstanding. Tom Hanks delivered a stellar performance, as did Michael Clarke Duncan, who played the death row inmate with extraordinary abilities. The emotional depth and the moral dilemmas explored in the story left a profound impact on me. The film delved into themes of injustice, empathy, and the human condition.

The cinematography and direction were commendable as well. The prison setting was depicted authentically, and the film’s pacing kept me engaged throughout its three-hour duration. The supernatural elements were portrayed with a delicate touch, enhancing the mystery and intrigue.

However, there were moments when the film felt quite heavy and emotionally draining. It’s not the kind of movie I’d watch for a lighthearted or relaxing evening. But, in my opinion, this is a testament to the movie’s power to evoke strong emotions and provoke thought.

In conclusion, “The Green Mile” is a remarkable film that lives up to its reputation. It’s an emotional and thought-provoking masterpiece with exceptional performances, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate compelling storytelling and deep character exploration.

Band 9 Sample Answer:

Recently, I had the privilege of watching the film “Parasite,” directed by Bong Joon-ho. It’s a South Korean dark comedy-thriller that won the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The movie has been critically acclaimed and has gained international recognition, and I was eager to see it for myself.

I chose to watch “Parasite” because of the buzz surrounding it and the numerous awards it had received. As someone who enjoys thought-provoking and socially relevant cinema, I was drawn to the film’s premise, which delves into issues of class division and societal inequalities. My expectations were quite high due to the critical acclaim and the anticipation of a unique cinematic experience.

After watching “Parasite,” I can confidently say that it exceeded my already lofty expectations. The film is a brilliant masterpiece that skillfully blends dark humor, suspense, and social commentary. The storytelling is both gripping and unpredictable. It tells the story of a poor family that schemes its way into the lives of a wealthy household, leading to unexpected twists and turns.

The movie is a visual and narrative treat. The cinematography is exquisite, with visually striking scenes and clever symbolism. The acting is exceptional, with every actor delivering a convincing and memorable performance. The director’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create tension and suspense are truly remarkable.

What stood out to me the most was how “Parasite” delves into the complexities of class dynamics and societal issues in a way that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. It raises questions about privilege, inequality, and the human desire for a better life.

While “Parasite” is not an easy film to watch due to its intense themes and the emotional rollercoaster it takes the audience on, it’s a testament to the power of cinema to challenge societal norms and provoke reflection. In my opinion, it’s a cinematic gem that deserves the praise it has received and is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates compelling storytelling and social commentary in film.

In conclusion, “Parasite” is a cinematic masterpiece that left a lasting impression on me, and it reaffirmed my belief in the transformative and thought-provoking power of great cinema.

Describe a Movie You Watched Recently and Would Like to Watch Again image

You should say: – What type of movie it was? – What it was about? – Where you watched it? – And explain why you would like to watch it again

Sample answer 1

The movie that I recently watched is Madagascar. I watched it with my classmates during the summer. Though it is kind of old, it’s so classic that the movie app still pushed it on the front page. I can still recall clearly all the fun we had that night in my classmate’s home.

I guess you must have watched or at least heard of the movie. It’s an animation comedy , and the story is about four animals, a lion, a giraffe, a zebra, and a hippo who escaped from the zoo in New York and started an exciting adventure in the tropical forest in Madagascar.

Living in the zoo for their whole life, they found everything outside their home intriguing and sometimes scary . Their breathtaking journey to the island, the funny penguins acting like spies as their company and the way they surprisingly resolved the crises during their trip are the highlight of the movie.

And the reason why I want to review the movie is mainly because of the roles, who are extremely hilarious . They all have different personalities like humans, but the way they talk and movie is so exaggerated and dramatic that I would laugh out loud every 5 minutes. I could still remember the whole room bursting into laughter so many times when watching it.

Actually, I watched it more than once, but the jokes in the lines never fail to have me rolling in the aisles again and again. Though several new episodes were released after the first one, Madagascar 1 always leaves the deepest impression on me. Not only did this movie bring laughter to me and my classmates, but also it reminds me of the wonderful time we had together.

Sample answer 2

Introduce the topic to your listener:

The film I wanna talk about is A beautiful Mind . It’s a biographical drama film based on the life of the American mathematician John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics .

What it was about?

The movie is about a math genius who struggles with mental disorder for decades. At some point in life, He stops taking medication and eventually manages to deal with his erratic symptoms with the full support and care from his wife.

Where you watched it?

My decision to watch this masterwork came a bit too late. It was released in 2001, but I didn’t see it until last week in my dorm room. I told my tutor I’d watch movies for two consecutive days after submitting my paper and he recommended this film to me.

Why you like it?

I think people love this movie for similar reasons. The plot holds the audience spellbound with its unexpected twists and the spectacular performance of the leading actors , especially Russell Crowe. He brings the character to life by avoiding sensationalism and building with small behavioral details. He shows a man who descends into madness and then, unexpectedly, regains the ability to function in the academic world .

And explain why you would like to watch it again?

The movie was well received by critics and won several academy awards a year later. After watching the movie, I did more research on John Nash and found that for many years he was a recluse , wandering around the campus, talking to no one drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes all by himself. It’s just amazing that he managed to defeat the demon trapped inside himself after living with it for such a long time. I’ll definitely watch it again soon.

Sample answer 3

I am going to talk about the movie I recently watched on Tencent video streaming application, which is called “500 days of summer” , and I love that movie with my heart and soul. If you’ ve ever seen this one, then you might be able to tell from my bangs that I get this style from the lead female character. I watched it alone at home last month and I have been obsessed with it since then.

Actually, I’ve already rewatched it for like 3 times, coz I feel it’s really a nice one to help you release emotions. It’s a bit of an unconventional romantic comedy that follow Tom, a hopeless romantic who’s been looking for the girl of his dreams his entire life, and Summer who believes that love is like Santa Claus and it doesn’t really exist. And the movie represents 500 days of their relationship. There are ups and downs, fights and break up.

The reason why it is one of my favorite films, other than the fact the Joseph is in it, is that this movie is really meaningful. When I first watched it, I really took it at face value, so I thought “oh summer is really bad for breaking Tom’s heart and poor Tom, he has to go chase after her ” . I was so rooting for hopeless Tom because he was a guy who wanted to get his dream girl and this thing was the happy ending that I had been taught in my entire life.

After watching this, I started to realize that it might not be okay to expect too much from somebody, and we can’t project this ultra romantic ideal of someone perfect onto someone who is, to be frank, not and can’t be perfect. So, it really blows my mind and gives me a new perspective on not just romantic relationship but also other interpersonal relationships. Thus, I chose this one for today’s topic.

1. Where do people normally watch movies?

They’ve got a number of choices. If they feel like going out, a movie theater is a good option as long as the movie you wanna watch is still out in the cinema. While if they prefer to stay at home or the films are not shown in the cinema, then they can watch it at home.

2. What are the differences between watching movies at home and in a cinema?

The best place to see a film must be in the cinema, coz it can offer people immerse experiences. But sometimes people might feel that some movies are not worth the ticket price, then they can go to the online streaming services. With the internet, I am sure you can find whatever sources you want.

3. Are actors or actresses important to movies? Why?

Well, a successful movie needs to have a good story which makes audience involved in it, and also good actors who can use their excellent performance to bring the character and the story in life. So, without good actors or actresses, a movie can’ t be complete.

4. Why are there fewer people going to the cinema to watch movies nowadays?

I guess the biggest reason is due to the pandemic situation. In recent three years, quarantine policy can be really strict which restricts people’ s activities. The closing of the cinema happens a lot. Also, I think fewer people going to cinema is because that there are fewer and fewer good films released in the cinema. People are wiser now and they don’t want to pay for movies not worth watching.

I recently watched four episodes of an antimated film with a title like: Louise and the Apocalypse. It was well done and concerned a shy protagonist with large eyes who was living in a world in witch had announced an approaching comet or metaor that would destroy the Earth. The protagonist sort of blunders into an office building that gives her a job and she eventually makes friends with a fellow worker and even has an affair that is a disappointment. I want to see the rest of the film! I can’t believe that I watched half of this film and Netflex does not know what I am talking out.

Part 2 –

60 seconds to prepare 📝 2 minutes to answer 🗣️

  • Describe a film you watched recently You can say: – what the film was – where you watched it – what the film was about – and if you enjoyed it or not

The film I watched recently was ‘The Midnight Sky,’ a science fiction movie directed by George Clooney. I saw it on a streaming platform from the comfort of my living room. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the story of a lone scientist in the Arctic, played by Clooney, who tries to prevent a group of astronauts from returning to Earth, which has undergone an unspecified global catastrophe.

What captivated me about ‘The Midnight Sky’ was its blend of survival drama and space adventure. The movie explores themes of isolation, environmental destruction, and the resilience of the human spirit. The cinematography was breathtaking, especially the scenes set in space.

However, despite its visual appeal and intriguing premise, I felt that the film fell short in terms of character development and emotional depth. The pacing was slow at times, which made it hard to stay fully engaged. In summary, while I enjoyed the film’s concept and the stunning visuals, the overall execution left me feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Describe a Film you Watched: IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions Answers

For cue card questions, the task lasts for 3-4 minutes, plus a scheduling period of 1 minute. During the one minute that is given to you in the IELTS speaking test to practise and then continue speaking, you are required to write down your thoughts and points. You do not have time to write the whole speech down in order to express and place your thoughts in good order to not try to blow up the number.

The IELTS speech cue card is one of the sections that most students are struggling with. This is the element that judges you on your ability to communicate, how well you can express your ideas, and how cohesively you can structure your feelings.

This blog contains two samples for this topic along with the question points which will be needed when you are speaking after thinking for a minute

IELTS Exam Questions- Cue Card Topics Describe a Film You Watched

You should say these following points:

  • When and where did you watch the film?
  • What was the film about?
  • Why did you choose to watch the film?
  • How did you feel about the film? And explain why it made you ponder a lot?

IELTS Exam Cue Card Sample Answer One: Describe a Film you Watched

The movie that I really liked and would like to talk about is named Parasite, which is a dark comedy suspense film produced by Bong Joon-ho in South Korea in 2019. Song Kang-ho, Lee Sunkyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, Choi Woo-Shik, and Park So-dam starred in this movie and gave it the edge it needed.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample Question Part One

At the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, it earned universal worldwide recognition and secured the Palme d’Or, making it the first Korean movie to win this award. It also made it in the 92nd Academy Awards, and it was chosen as the South Korean entry for Best International Feature Film.

Right on the day it debuted, I watched this movie in the theatre because I was completely mesmerized by the enigmatic teaser and the film’s unusual name. Also satisfying was the experience at the theatre, with a large projector, the mega audio system, the dark environment, and the varied reaction.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample Question Part Two

This movie Parasite makes its way into our conscious awareness. Initially, we giggled at its slanting of fact and the sheer temerity of its protagonists. But giggling quickly gives way to anxiety and then to grief, so I want those really sentimental feelings to be shared by my buddy. As Bong’s most sophisticated province declaration after Memories of Murder in 2003, Parasite is typically compelling and beautifully made, making a stand easily. I’m sure I’m not going to be selling any surprises here, but it’s enough to tell you’re not going to presume any of the details because once the plot heads into the blind alley, it’s going to remain really dark until the climax.

Sample Two: Describe a Film you Watched

During one’s free time, I’m extremely enjoyable to watch films and I normally watch 7-8 movies a month. The very last film that helped me be aware I was watching a bunch was Article 15, on a platform for streaming movies. The dream of viewing films in a cinema is completely forgotten due to the ongoing pandemic. This is, nevertheless, the reality where everyone’s fortress is their den. This, summer break, following the urging of my colleagues, I agreed to watch a movie called “Article 15.” That’s a feature film in 2019 based on some real-life incidents featuring Ayushman Khurana and it got me thinking a lot about all this. The film deals with Article 15 of the Constitution Of India, where it forbids discriminate on the basis of religion, colour, caste, sex or place of birth.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Question Part One

A criminal investigation is what starts this movie, where three young girls disappear from a remote village and this is the plotline of this movie. Article 15 is a tale about violence. It is considered-provoking and brings the prevailing raging social challenges in many parts of the nation and it brings all that to light. In addition, the interactions have had an eternal influence on the audience and it has also helped me consider objectively about societal inequalities. The plot of the movie mixed with strong and poignant scenes and several occasions gave me a lot to think about. But again, I was awestruck by the performances of dynamic and seasoned performers.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Question Part Two

Even in recent decades, as India is developing, it is surprising to see such events occurring. This movie Article15 throws lights to a very important stigma and throws light on the social unjust that still occurs.  This exposes a true and bitter reality about our underdeveloped parts of our countries. In conclusion, this film got me thinking that that’s the kind of film that the country deserves and every Indian should experience such appreciation for what it is and what it tried to convey.

  • What is the movie about?
  • Why do you want to watch this movie again?

Sample 1 Describe a Movie You Watched Recently and Want to Watch Again

Recently, I watched the movie “La La Land” for the first time. I saw it on a Friday night myself.

“La La Land” is a romantic musical comedy-drama set in modern-day Los Angeles. It follows the story of Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a jazz pianist, as they fall in love while pursuing their dreams in the city of dreams. The film explores themes of love, sacrifice, and following one’s passion, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant and colourful Los Angeles.

I really enjoyed watching “La La Land” and was thoroughly captivated by its beautiful cinematography, charming characters, and memorable soundtrack. The film’s depiction of the ups and downs of relationships and pursuing one’s dreams is relatable and touching, and the musical numbers are lively and emotional.

I am eager to watch “La La Land” again because I was so invested in the story and the characters that I feel like there is more to discover upon a re-watch. The film’s themes and messages are universal and timeless, making it a movie that can be enjoyed and appreciated multiple times. Additionally, the musical numbers are so enjoyable that I wouldn’t mind watching them again and again.

In conclusion, “La La Land” is a movie I would highly recommend, and I look forward to watching it again soon.

Sample 2 Describe a Movie You Watched Recently and Want to Watch Again

Recently, I watched the movie “Inception” directed by Christopher Nolan. I saw this movie about a month ago with my friend, who is a big fan of Nolan’s films.

The movie is about a professional thief named Cobb hired to perform the inception, which means planting an idea into someone’s subconscious. He assembles a team of experts to carry out this task and enters his target’s dreams. However, things quickly become complicated as the lines between dreams and reality blur, and Cobb must navigate through a maze of memories to succeed in his mission and confront his own demons.

I want to watch this movie again because it was a mind-bending experience that left me with a sense of awe and wonder. The film’s exploration of the human subconscious and the concept of dreams is both thought-provoking and entertaining. Additionally, the visuals in the movie are stunning, with each dream level becoming increasingly surreal and imaginative. The ensemble cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, and Ellen Page, delivers outstanding performances that add depth and nuance to their characters.

Furthermore, the film’s soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer, perfectly complements the action on screen, adding to the suspense and tension in key moments. Overall, “ Inception ” is a masterful filmmaking work that deserves to be watched multiple times to appreciate its complexity and beauty fully.

In conclusion, “Inception” is a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend to others. I am eager to watch it again to pick up on any details I may have missed during my first viewing.

Follow-Up Questions Describe a Movie You Watched Recently and Want to Watch Again

Question 1:- what’s the difference between watching a movie at home and watching it in the cinema.

Watching a movie at home and at a cinema are two very different experiences. At home, you have the comfort of your surroundings and can pause, rewind, or fast-forward as needed. In contrast, a trip to the cinema offers a larger screen, better sound quality, and a more communal experience as you share the film with an audience. The atmosphere of a cinema, with the lights going down and the sound of the projector, can add to the excitement and anticipation of the movie. Ultimately, both options have pros and cons, and the best choice depends on personal preferences and the type of movie you’re watching.

Question 2:- Do young Indians like to watch foreign movies?

Yes, many young Indians do enjoy watching foreign movies. With the growth of the internet and streaming platforms, it’s easier than ever for people to access a wide range of international films and TV shows. Additionally, India has a large middle class with a growing appetite for global culture , including movies. As a result, many young Indians have developed an interest in foreign movies and are eager to explore the world through film. They are particularly interested in Hollywood movies but enjoy movies from other countries, such as South Korea, Europe, and Japan.

Question 3:- How would you define a good movie?

A good movie can engage and entertain viewers while making them think, feel, or reflect. A good movie can be thought-provoking, emotionally impactful, or fun. It should have strong characters, a well-crafted story, and technical elements, such as cinematography and soundtrack, that support and enhance the overall experience. A good movie should leave a lasting impression and stay with the viewer long after it has ended. In short, a good movie effectively uses the medium of film to tell a story that resonates with its audience.

Question 4:- Is it important to have famous actors in the movie if the movie wants to be successful?

Having famous movie actors can help it be more successful, as it can attract audiences and generate buzz. However, having famous actors is not the only factor in determining the success of a movie. A movie can also be successful if it has a well-written script, an engaging storyline, and strong direction, regardless of the fame of its actors. Ultimately, the essential factor in a movie’s success is whether it can connect with audiences and deliver a memorable and satisfying experience. So while having famous actors can be beneficial, it is not the only or most crucial factor in determining the success of a movie.

Question 5:- Do you prefer to watch a movie at home or the cinema?

Watching a movie at home and the cinema has benefits and drawbacks. Watching a movie at home allows for more comfort and control, such as the ability to pause, rewind, or fast-forward. On the other hand, watching a movie in the cinema offers a larger screen, better sound quality, and a more immersive and communal experience. Ultimately, the choice between watching a movie at home or the cinema will depend on personal preferences, the type of movie being watched, and the desired viewing experience.

Question 6:- Do you think cinemas will disappear in the future?

It is difficult to predict the future with certainty, but it is unlikely that cinemas will completely disappear. While the rise of streaming platforms has changed how people watch movies, a large and dedicated audience still enjoys the communal and immersive experience of watching a film in a cinema. Additionally, the cinema industry has been adapting to the changing landscape by offering new technologies, such as 3D and VR, to enhance the movie-going experience. As long as people continue to value the communal experience of watching a movie in a cinema and enjoy the spectacle of the big screen, cinemas will continue to be a popular and relevant form of entertainment.

CUE CARD – Describe a movie you watched recently and want to watch again.

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a movie you watched recently and want to watch again. You should say: When did you see this movie? With whom did you see this movie? What is the movie about? Why do you want to watch this movie again?

Sample Answer

Well, I am a huge cinephile. So, I really treasure binge watching some good movies. But today I would like to talk about a movie which I can watch on loop. The name of the film is ‘Jab we met’, by Imtiaz Ali.  It is a romantic comedy, and the plot of the story is quite dramatic. The main cast includes Kareena Kapoor who plays the character of a jubilant girl from Punjab and Shahid Kapoor is the lead actor who acts as Aditya Kashyap, who comes from a well to do family with a giant buisness.

I first watched this movie when I was in tenth class on recommendation from one of my friends who herself was quite obsessed with the film. We watched it together at my home on my laptop. It was a two-and-a-half-hour-long movie and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. The movie was more of a roller coaster of different emotions. I felt as if my emotional floodgates were wide open because the climax was very emotional.

The movie opens with a young man who is disappointed by the circumstances he goes through in his life, while he is angry at everyone around him, he accidentally meets a young jovial girl who is quite an extrovert and is not scared of anything. She believes that her life should be driven by the choices which she makes and not what others expect from her. She is a free-spirited person who believes in enjoying life to the fullest. Meanwhile Aditya’s personality is opposite than hers. He is melancholic and has a very twisted perception of life. In the movie both the characters are seen facing certain family issues and just like that from being two strangers to being each other’s soulmate they fought against all the odds and were married happily in the end.

I want to watch this movie again, as I really relate to the Geet’s character and the way in which she shows character development from being an impulsive person to being this grown-up thoughtful lady who is mature in her approach to the adversities of life. Therefore, I really enjoy watching this movie and watch it again and again.

STRONG WORDS

Word Meaning Sentence
Binge-watch spree I binge watch Avengers all the time.
Jubilant jovial, happy Reena is a jubilant girl.
Sheer complete, absolute Eating junk food is a sheer waste of money.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions) Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a movie you watched recently and want to watch again’.

Q1. What is the difference between watching a film at home and watching a film at the cinema? There is a huge difference. At home we watch films from the comfort zone of our home without having any interference whereas, at the cinema the tickets are quite expensive and there is a lot of disturbance in between. Thus, it is a sheer waste of money and time.

Q2. Do young Indians like to watch foreign movies? Youngsters nowadays are more inclined towards Hollywood films as they contain action and drama, followed by some good audio- visual effects. I think technology contributes to the movies much more, which is what piques the attention of the audience.

Q3. How would you define a good movie? A good movie is one which includes all the elements in it. It should include humor, romance, thrill and a plot twist followed by a great climax. Moreover, the cast should also be good.

IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

Describe a movie that you recently saw and that disappointed you

You should say:

Why did you hate it? What genre was the movie? When did you watch it?

NOTE  –  The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer ,  and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the subject for one-to-two minutes .

Introduction

Although I have watched umpteen bad movies in my life, one was a disaster, which is worth mentioning .

When did you watch it?

I watched it last month with my family at home.

What genre was the movie?

The movie’s name is Shandar , and it was a romantic cum action movie.

Why did you hate it?

There were beaucoup reasons for hating it. First, the day I watched it was extremely tiring due to the hard work I had done the whole day. So I wanted to relax by watching a movie that could entertain me. But it turned out to be a dud.

Firstly the jokes inside the movie were terrible. I thought my family would have guffaws of laughter while watching the movie, but the way the whole cast performed, it seemed like they were jokers instead of comedians. Also, the scriptwriter could have done a better job by including comedy content, which was age-old.

Apart from this, there was no storyline. The actor’s roles needed to be clarified, and the director needed to extract their full potential. I watched the movie till the end, but I needed clarification on who the protagonist was.

Moreover, there were some action scenes in which the ere was a share exaggeration of the physical strength of the villain in the movie. For example, he managed to stop a helicopter from flying by holding the landing skids with both hands.

Lastly, the choreographer could have done better work; most dance moves looked terrible. And about eight songs in the movie were remixes of the old Bollywood songs.

In short, the movie was a sheer waste of two hours. And after watching it, I wrote a review on various social media platforms and gave it no stars.

Whenever I have leisure time, I utilize it by watching a movie. Although I like most movies, some of them disappoint me. One such film is worth mentioning.

Recently I watched a movie by the name of Sanju. It is a biopic based on the life of famous actor Sanjay Dutt.

I watched it last week with my family members at my home.

I’m not too fond of it for many reasons. The first and foremost is the twisting of facts. There is no denying this conviction that the production time has to make some changes in the original script to make the movie enticing for the audience. However, that doesn’t mean that you withhold the facts and include events that were never a part of the actor’s life.

Although the director left no stone unturned to make this movie a grand success, in pursuit of achieving this aim, he played with the script. Firstly in the film, Sanjay Dutt is shown married to Manyata Dutt. However, the director purposely did not show his first marriage with Richa Sharma.

Sanjay Dutt married Richa Sharma in 1987, and their relationship ended in 1996 when Richa left for a heavenly abode due to cancer in 1996. Our life partner is an essential part of our life, and excluding the tragic end of the protagonist’s wife was a big blunder from the director.

Secondly, Sanjay Dutt has one daughter named Trishala from his first marriage, and to my dismay , her character was also not shown in the movie.

Due to the above reasons, the movie Sanjay disappointed me, and I will not watch it again.

Being a movie fanatic, I like most of the films; however, I disliked one movie, ‘ Udta Punjab”.

The movie was about the problem of Drug abuse in the state of Punjab in India.

I watched it last month back in a theater.

I was not too fond of it for many reasons. Firstly the movie shows the state of Punjab, like that the state is full of drug addicts. It is a blatant lie because there is no denying this conviction that drug abuse is a pressing problem in Punjab, but it is in a few areas; the rest of Punjab is away from drugs.

It is a state which produces researchers, sportspersons, and engineers, and terming it a drug state is detrimental to its reputation.

Apart from this, another reason for disliking the movie is that it shows the local police in lousy shape and depicts that it is due to the involvement of cops in drug peddling; the usage of drugs is growing exponentially. Such misrepresentation harms the general public because people consider the police as a force that protects them from antisocial elements, and if the general public starts mistreating the police the law and order situation could be in absolute disarray. Moreover, due to the stringent guidelines, the drug menace in the Punjab state has declined considerably.

Lastly, the movie exhibits that drugs are available in every nook and corner of the Punjab state, which is not true because, due to strict government rules, it is impossible to sell them openly.

Being a movie buff, I love most of them. However, there is one which I dislike.

It was a suspense movie.

I watched it last month with my college friends.

I went to watch the movie with tremendous enthusiasm, and I believed that the star cast would give a stunning performance. Although I was happy with the actors’ efforts, the movie’s plot disappointed me because it sent the wrong signal.

There is no denying this conviction that we go to cinemas to watch movies for entertainment. However, many people tend to get motivated by films and indulge in anti-social activities. The main reason for this is the wrong portrayal of the villains in the movies, where they look like heroes.

The same was the case with the Social 26 movie, in which a group of imposters went on a robbery spree in the guise of CBI officers. They loot business people by showing their false identities. Apart from this, the offenders duped the police investing team and fled to Dubai after amassing many funds through their dubious works.

Such portrayal of the anti-social elements is counterproductive for society because it signals that there is no harm in doing money laundering by duping others. It is the bounden duty of the film fraternity to educate the public about the evils in society. However, in the movie Special 26, the production team did the opposite by showing the robbers as successful, and the role of the police was of a mere spectator.

Due to these reasons, I wouldn’t say I liked the movie named Special 26.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe a movie that you recently saw and that disappointed you ”.

1. What types of movies are popular in India?

India is geographically a big country with a massive population, and due to this reason, numerous genres have audiences in our country. The main reason for the success of Japanese animated movies is their storyline. I am immensely interested in watching Japanese animation even as an adult, and their storyline is unique, as per my experience there. Moreover, their stories appeal to people from all walks of life.

3. Does the older generation like animated movies?

Most elderly believe that animation is for kids, and thus, they don’t indulge in it. So the reason for their less interest is their prejudging regarding such movies because many films might appeal to them if they watch them.

A movie becomes extraordinary and impactful through compelling storytelling, intense character development, stellar performances, optical excellence, superb dialogues, provocative soundtracks, and exceptional innovation. Here are top tips by experts when writing an essay about a particular movie during your assignments:

In addition, analyze different techniques employed by filmmakers. Take note of stylistic choices, including editing, sound, cinematography, imagery, and allegory. This helps contribute to the overall impact and meaning.

Lastly, connect your analysis to the thesis statement. Ensure all arguments captured in your analysis tie together to the main argument. It should maintain a straight focus throughout your essay.

Remember to re-state your thesis while summarizing previously mentioned arguments innovatively and creatively when finishing up your movie essay. Lastly, you can recommend your reader to watch the movie.

The last movie I've seen is Bunty & Bubli 2. this movie is full of drama, love, and comedy. It's a sequel to a movie named Bunty Aur Babli which was released in 2005. In the earlier movie Bunty Aur Babli, the role of Bunty was played by Abhishek Bachhan and Babli was played by Rani Mukherji. They both were small-town guys having big dreams both left their houses to fulfill their dreams. but ended up becoming cons because of their needs. they looted the rich ones and shared the money with the poor people and became like Robinhood and were loved by the common people. Nobody knew who they are. their identity was not exposed. Then Amitabh Bachchan who played the role of a Police Cop. Came across their way and got them finally in the end. But due to having a baby and they both promised to leave the path of crime. Amitabh Bachhan leaves them to escape in the end. After this many years, this story is carried forward for a sequel called Bunty Aur Babli 2. The main change is This movie has Saif Ali Khan as Bunty and Rani Mukherji is still playing Babli's character. The cop this time is Pankaj Tripathi who's my favorite actor he was also there in Bunty Aur Babli in 2005 as a constable with Amitabh Bachchan's supporting character but then he was not that popular. This time he adds the comedy factor to the role. he reaches Saif and Rani's house to have a suspicion of a robbery done by the two new characters this time using the name of Bunty and Babli and the story begins. The original ones help Police to catch the new Bunty and Babli and the story still end up with Rani and Saif catching the new ones and leaving them to escape with a that they will leave the path of crime. Overall this was a nice sequel and Saif has defined the role of Bunty very well. I liked the movie and loved the story.

Ben Affleck’s Performance As Superman 18 Years Ago Is Even More Surreal Now The DCEU Has Ended

10 best b-movies of the 1990s, ranked, 10 confusing movie moments only explained by deleted scenes, from the goonies to avengers: age of ultron.

While Ben Affleck's career has had some incredible highs, it’s also filled with underrated releases that deserve to be reappraised. Although some of Affleck’s underrated movies gained audience and critical acclaim at the time of release and even hit big at the box office, their lack of cultural relevance today means they have been largely forgotten by viewers at large. Other movies, while not entirely unknown, were absolutely fantastic and have only been recognized as such by movie connoisseurs who realized their status as underappreciated cinematic gems.

The best Affleck movies have had a lasting effect on contemporary cinema, as his Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting screenplay, which he co-wrote and starred in alongside his frequent collaborator Matt Damon, has become the stuff of Hollywood legend. However, other fantastic releases with notable directors like Ridley Scott or Kevin Smith have failed to register and gain the level of recognition they deserve. There were multiple reasons these movies have been so badly underrated, but viewers should be sure to go back and watch all of these fantastic Ben Affleck movies .

10 Paycheck (2003)

Ben affleck as michael jennings.

Ben Affleck in Paycheck

Alongside his roles in Gigli and Daredevil , Ben Affleck won a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his performance in Paycheck . While critics slated this John Woo action sci-fi film upon release, it did not deserve its lackluster reputation and stood as a solid adaptation of a short story by Philip K. Dick. Boasting a cast that also included Uma Thurman, Paul Giamatti, and Michael C. Hall, looking back on this movie more than two decades later, it’s clearly underrated as its insightful science fiction story had just as much to offer as previous Woo classics like Face/Off .

Affleck played Michael Jennings, a reserve engineer whose memory was erased after every job to protect his client's intellectual property. However, one memory wipe left Jennings unaware of the past three years and sent him running for his life as he struggles to pick up the pieces of a vast conspiracy. With plenty of high-concept sci-fi fun, clever plotting, and over-the-top action sequences, Paycheck was a solidly entertaining addition to both Affleck and Woo’s filmographies that deserved a far better reputation than it has ever received.

9 Reindeer Games (2000)

Ben affleck as rudy duncan.

Ben Affleck in Reindeer Games (2000)

Reindeer Games was the final feature film by director John Frankenheimer, whose reputation as a box office flop and disappointing action thriller has followed it around for almost a quarter of a century. However, with a stellar cast, witty dialogue, and an enjoyable concept, Reindeer Games was harshly judged and deserves to be reappraised by modern audiences. Featuring a strong performance from Ben Affleck as the ex-con Rudy Duncan, Gary Sinise and Charlize Theron also contributed to the film’s seldom-appreciated appeal.

This story of Rudy being dragged into a situation against his will where he must help thieves rob a casino or face being killed featured many twists and turns. While Reindeer Games was not without its flaws or well-worn clichés , it was also a solid thriller that showcased Affleck’s skill as a bona fide action movie star. Taken on its own merits as pulpy, action-packed entertainment, Reindeer Games was a high-stakes heist filled with betrayal, deception, and shocking twists.

8 Dogma (1999)

Ben affleck as bartleby.

Ben Affleck and Linda Fiorentino in Dogma

While fans of director Kevin Smith have long known the appeal of Dogma , it’s been hugely underrated by general audiences. Featuring Ben Affleck reunited with Matt Damon just two years after Good Will Hunting , this story of fallen angels trying to exploit a loophole to gain access back to Heaven was the most ambitious and creative work in Smith’s entire filmography. As an enjoyable satire of religion, Dogma was a provocative, albeit not scathing, takedown of Christianity.

Affleck’s role as Bartleby alongside Damon as Loki proved the pair's comedic skills alongside Smith’s dynamic duo of Jay and Silent Bob, standup legend Chris Rock, and singing sensation Alanis Morissette playing God herself. Dogma was a box office hit at the time of its release, earning $44 million against its $10 million budget (via The Numbers ), although rights issues associated with Miramax’s former co-chairman and convicted abuser Harvey Weinstein meant it has long been unavailable on streaming. However, Smith has teased the re-release of Dogma , which will give viewers a chance to rewatch this underrated Affleck film.

Dogma is a 1999 comedy that revolves around two fallen angels, Bartleby and Loki, who try to get back to Heaven after getting thrown out by God. It is part director Kevin Smith's the View Askewniverse, and it counts with an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, Linda Fiorentino, Jason Lee, and Jason Mewes.

7 Jersey Girl (2004)

Ben affleck as ollie trinké.

Ben Affleck in Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl was always the most divisive movie in Kevin Smith's filmmaking career , and, alongside releases like Gigli and Daredevil , it was considered a low point for Ben Affleck. As a sentimental rom-com highlighting a widowed father looking after his young daughter, this sweet film never deserved the vitriolic criticism it has endured, such as three Razzie Award nominations, one of which was Worst Actor for Ben Affleck. But looking back on Jersey Girl today, this terrible reception felt unjustified, as Smith’s first attempt at a movie set outside his Viewaskew universe was a compelling and emotional success.

Jersey Girl was released right alongside the media’s obsession with ‘Bennifer,’ the tabloid-given name of Affleck’s relationship with his then-girlfriend and future ex-wife Jennifer Lopez.

Jersey Girl was released right alongside the media’s obsession with ‘Bennifer,’ the tabloid-given name of Affleck’s relationship with his then-girlfriend and future ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, who also appeared in the movie. However, some viewers were disappointed that Lopez's character was killed off early in the film and felt the excitement of seeing Hollywood’s most notable couple onscreen was not properly utilized. However, 20 years later, audiences should now revisit Jersey Girl and enjoy this underrated movie on its own merits.

Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl is a 2004 romantic comedy-drama directed by Kevin Smith. The film stars Ben Affleck as Ollie Trinke, a music publicist whose life changes dramatically after personal tragedy forces him to reconnect with his roots and assume the role of a single father. Liv Tyler and George Carlin co-star in this story of love, loss, and familial bonds.

6 Changing Lanes (2002)

Ben affleck as gavin banek.

Samuel L Jackson grabs Ben Affleck by the coat in traffic in Changing Lanes

Changing Lanes was an enjoyable action thriller boasting two major stars that did well at the box office yet rarely gets spoken about among conversations around the best movies of the 2000s . This highly underrated Affleck movie deserved far more recognition as its clever concept about a Wall Street lawyer crashing his car into a middle-aged, recovering alcoholic insurance salesman’s vehicle was a tense, well-crafted deconstruction of moral dilemmas. With Ben Affleck as the lawyer and Samuel L. Jackson as the collision victim, Changing Lanes was a thematically rich film of real social relevance.

As this automobile accident escalated both men’s mutual road rage, Changing Lanes grew ever more intense as their subsequent actions raised the stakes through a litany of immoral and illegal acts. Part of the reason that Changing Lanes has remained so underrated was that its offbeat concept was so unusual, although this unconventional nature also contributed to its idiosyncratic appeal. Changing Lanes was a sharp and intelligent thriller that’s well worth revisiting .

5 Hollywoodland (2006)

Ben affleck as george reeves.

Hollywoodland, Ben Affleck as George reeves laying down and dressed as superman

Long before Ben Affleck became DC’s Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , he portrayed George Reeves, also the actor who starred in the Adventures of Superman television series during the 1950s in Hollywoodland . This mystery drama told a fictionalized story based around the death of Reeves, whose death by gunshot at age 45 remains controversial and started what’s known as the Superman curse . As an intricate and fascinating account of a Hollywood star's rise and fall, Hollywoodland had much to say about celebrities' fickle nature and those doomed to endure it .

Hollywoodland was a clever neo-noir look behind the curtain of celebrity during this era.

Affleck’s performance in Hollywoodland gained widespread acclaim, yet he was snubbed for a deserved Academy Award nomination, and the film has failed to gain widespread recognition in the years since its release. However, for those in the know, Hollywoodland was a captivating film that also featured Adrian Brody trying to uncover the mystery of the star’s untimely death. While unanswered questions about just what happened to the real Reeves continue to persist, Hollywoodland was a clever neo-noir look behind the curtain of celebrity during this era.

Ben Affleck as Joe Coughlin in Live by Night

Ben Affleck’s track record as a director has been far stronger than his acting career, as his first three movies, Gone Baby Gone , The Town , and Argo , all became modern classics, with the latter even winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Sadly, Affleck’s fourth directional feature film, which he also starred in, failed to make much of an impact as it has been severely underrated. As the story of an ambitious bootlegger who became a notorious gangster in prohibition-era Flordia, Live By Night was a truly compelling and stylish movie.

Featuring Boston-bred gangsters facing off against the Klu Klux Klan, Live by Night powerfully addressed issues of racism , religion, and mob mentalities, with the lesson being that people’s actions always come back to haunt them in the end. While it’s true that Live by Night did feel rushed at times, and Affleck was likely overwhelmed from juggling several projects at once, including portraying Batman, this was still a solidly entertaining crime drama. Although it didn’t live up to its fullest potential, Live By Night has much to offer.

3 The Accountant (2016)

Ben affleck as christian wolff.

Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff sitting at a desk in The Accountant

The Accountant received mixed reviews as some critics dismissed it as Ben Affleck joining the litany of A-list stars attempting to cash in on action franchises, à la Liam Neeson in Taken or Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer (via Collider .) However, this underrated Affleck film should not be easily cast aside, as its solid action premise and autistic protagonist meant The Accountant was more than meets the eye. While this characterization could have come across as offensive, Affleck gave his all to this material, and it was refreshing to see his part was not reduced entirely to his neurodivergence.

Ben Affleck played Christian Wolff, a genius autistic accountant who uncooks financial books for the most dangerous criminals in the world. As an intelligent and entertaining thriller, The Accountant turned the action up to eleven as Wolff not only had the smarts needed to outwit his adversaries , but his childhood training from his merciless military father meant he was comfortable with conflict, killing, and causing carnage. The Accountant was highly underrated when it was first released, but luckily, critics have a chance to redeem themselves with the impending release of The Accountant 2 in 2025.

2 The Last Duel (2021)

Ben affleck as count pierre d'alençon.

Ben Affleck as Count Pierre d'Alençon watching intently in The Last Duel.

Despite being director Ridley Scott’s most accomplished film in years, The Last Duel didn’t get the recognition it deserved and sadly fell by the wayside in terms of cultural impact. As a well-written, thought-provoking, and timely deconstruction of systemic misogyny, The Last Duel addressed modern concerns in a medieval setting, reunited Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and featured an astounding performance from Jodie Comer. While not enough time has passed for it to be considered an underappreciated forgotten classic, those who slept on The Last Duel the first time around would be wise to revisit it.

Affleck played a supporting role as the hedonistic nobleman who escalated tensions between the two duelists, Sir Jean de Carrouges (Damon) and Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver.) The Last Duel’s heavy themes of sexual assault and oppressive female subjugation made this a tense and effective story that will surely be reappraised as an underappreciated hidden gem in Ridley’s vast filmography. The Last Duel was also co-written by Affleck and Damon alongside Nicole Holofcener, showcasing that the men who once wrote Good Will Hunting have not lost any of their creative talents in the written word either.

The Last Duel

The Last Duel is a historical epic drama set amid the Hundred Years War, and explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice, and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris; two friends turned bitter rivals.

1 The Way Back (2020)

Ben Affleck in The Way Back 2020

One excellent film that defined Ben Affleck’s career was the woefully underrated The Way Back , a sports drama that featured a performance that likely hit close to home for its star. Affleck starred as Jack Cunningham, an alcoholic construction worker who became head coach of the basketball team at the high school where he was once a star player. The Way Back was an insightful and personal film for Affleck that reflected his own struggles with addiction and was produced shortly after he himself had left rehab (via Inquirer .)

The power of The Way Back was not only in its compelling narrative, but also in the genuine nature of Affleck’s performance

The Way Back explored anguish, self-destruction, and the path toward redemption, and although it never quite got the attention it deserved, it remains one of Affleck’s greatest acting performances. The power of The Way Back was not only in its compelling narrative, but also in the genuine nature of Affleck’s performance, as Jack’s difficulties felt poignant and vulnerable. The Way Back peeled back the curtain on Ben Affleck’s long reported on personal struggles and gave audiences a glimpse into the man behind the movies.

‘Close Your Eyes’ Review: The Case of the Unfinished Film

For his latest, the Spanish director Victor Erice, known for the classic “The Spirit of the Beehive,” weaves a meta tale of a director looking for an absent actor.

  • Share full article

A man sits on rocks and pours water out of a shoe.

By Manohla Dargis

A mystery wends through “Close Your Eyes,” a drama in which the past, present and cinema converge. It’s the latest from the Spanish director Victor Erice, who’s best known for the art-cinema paragon “ The Spirit of the Beehive ” (1973), a dream of a movie about a girl who is deeply troubled by the original “Frankenstein” film. Set around 1940 in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, “Beehive” elliptically focuses on a traumatized child and country that, when Erice made this classic, was in the waning years of Franco’s fascist dictatorship.

“Close Your Eyes” is the fourth feature-length movie from Erice, who, it’s worth noting, was born in 1940; it’s also his first since “ Dream of Light ” (1992). The story in “Close Your Eyes” turns on Miguel (Manolo Solo), a melancholic filmmaker who hasn’t directed a movie in several decades and now scratches out a marginal living as a translator. Miguel’s last film, “The Farewell Gaze,” came to an aborted, ignoble finish when his lead actor, Julio (José Coronado), enigmatically disappeared. Without his star, Miguel was unable to finish the movie, which brought his film career to an end and, effectively, caused him to vanish as well.

The repressed have a way of returning, as it were. And so it is in “Close Your Eyes,” which follows Miguel as he confronts his old life, his unfinished film and his absent actor, all of whom come back to some kind of attenuated life courtesy of a TV program, “Unsolved Cases.” Miguel agrees to participate in the show, which will revisit his movie’s puzzling history. He sits down for an interview and lets the program present some of the few sequences that he managed to salvage; soon enough, he also tries to find out what happened to Julio, an inquiry that begins practically enough, though it gradually accrues destabilizing existential weight.

Written by Erice and Michel Gaztambide, “Close Your Eyes” quickly takes the shape of an investigation, one riddled with doubles, cinematic and otherwise. Much like Julio’s character in the unfinished film — a long, chatty section from it opens the movie — Miguel assumes the role of a detective who’s charged with finding a missing person and even begins wearing the trench coat that Julio wore in the film. These two former compatriots once shared an artistic calling and other interests, including an ex-lover. As the main story unfolds, Miguel’s exploration of the past reveals as much about the investigator as the investigated, and the men progressively seem like doppelgängers. Each has been lost; each will be also be found.

Erice extends this doubling motif to the intimate one-on-one conversations that anchor “Close My Eyes,” and which incrementally, and at times almost begrudgingly, propel Miguel’s story forward. Erice tends to shoot the conversations in the earlier part of the movie as face-to-face encounters, with Miguel — an earnest, worried-looking soul — seated directly opposite another equally serious character. Later in the movie, after Miguel meets a stranger called Gardel (also played by Coronado), who helps solve the case of the missing actor, Erice often frames the two men side-by-side, as if twinning them. This visual shift underscores their connections without commensurately deepening either character or the overall movie.

'She wanted to live a good life': Parents of Indian doctor raped and murdered on night shift

last movie you watched essay

The rape and murder of a trainee doctor in India’s Kolkata city earlier this month has sparked massive outrage in the country, with tens of thousands of people protesting on the streets, demanding justice. BBC Hindi spoke to the doctor’s parents who remember their daughter as a clever, young woman who wanted to lead a good life and take care of her family.

All names and details of the family have been removed as Indian laws prohibit identifying a rape victim or her family.

"Please make sure dad takes his medicines on time. Don't worry about me."

This was the last thing the 31-year-old doctor said to her mother, hours before she was brutally assaulted in a hospital where she worked.

“The next day, we tried reaching her but the phone kept ringing," the mother told the BBC at their family home in a narrow alley, a few kilometres from Kolkata.

The same morning, the doctor’s partially-clothed body was discovered in the seminar hall, bearing extensive injuries. A hospital volunteer worker has been arrested in connection with the crime.

The incident has sparked massive outrage across the country, with protests in several major cities. At the weekend, doctors across hospitals in India observed a nation-wide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), with only emergency services available at major hospitals.

The family say they feel hollowed out by their loss.

“At the age of 62, all my dreams have been shattered," her father told the BBC.

Since their daughter's horrific murder, their house, located in a respectable neighbourhood, has become the focus of intense media scrutiny.

Behind a police barricade stand dozens of journalists and camera crew, hoping to capture the parents in case they step out.

A group of 10 to 15 police officers perpetually stand guard to ensure the cameras do not take photos of the victim's house.

Getty Images Women hold lit candles as they take part in a vigil named 'Reclaim the Night' on 15 August in Kolkata

The crime took place on the night of 9 August, when the woman, who was a junior doctor at the city's RG Kar Medical College, had gone to a seminar room to rest after a gruelling 36-hour shift.

Her parents remembered how the young doctor, their only child, was a passionate student who worked extremely hard to become a doctor.

“We come from a lower middle-class background and built everything on our own. When she was little, we struggled financially," said the father, who is a tailor.

The living room where he sat was cluttered with tools from his profession - a sewing machine, spools of thread and a heavy iron. There were scraps of fabrics scattered on the floor.

There were times when the family did not have money to even buy pomegranates, their daughter's favourite fruit, he continued.

"But she could never bring herself to ask for anything for herself."

“People would say, ‘You can’t make your daughter a doctor'. But my daughter proved everyone wrong and got admission in a government-run medical college," he added, breaking down. A relative tried to console him.

The mother recalled how her daughter would write in her diary every night before going to bed.

“She wrote that she wanted to win a gold medal for her medical degree. She wanted to lead a good life and take care of us too,” she said softly.

And she did.

The father, who is a high blood-pressure patient, said their daughter always made sure he took his medicines on time.

“Once I ran out of medicine and thought I’d just buy it the next day. But she found out, and even though it was around 10 or 11pm at night, she said no-one will eat until the medicine is here,” he said.

“That’s how she was - she never let me worry about anything."

Her mother listened intently, her hands repeatedly touching a gold bangle on her wrist - a bangle she had bought with her daughter.

Getty Images Resident doctors shout slogans protesting in front of the Health Ministry in Delhi, demanding justice for the doctor from Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, on 19 August, 2024

The parents said their daughter’s marriage had almost been finalised. "But she would tell us not to worry and say she would continue to take care of all our expenses even after marriage," the father said.

As he spoke those words, the mother began to weep, her soft sobs echoing in the background.

Occasionally, her eyes would wander to the staircase, leading up to their daughter's room.

The door has remained shut since 10 August and the parents have not set foot there since the news of her death.

They say they still can't believe that something "so barbaric" could happen to their daughter at her workplace.

"The hospital should be a safe place," the father said.

Violence against women is a major issue in India - an average of 90 rapes a day were reported in 2022, according to government data.

The parents said their daughter’s death had brought back memories of a 2012 case when a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was gang-raped on a moving bus in capital Delhi. Her injuries were fatal.

Following the assault - which made global headlines and led to weeks of protests - India tightened laws against sexual violence.

But reported cases of sexual assault have gone up and access to justice still remains a challenge for women.

Last week, thousands participated in a Reclaim the Night march held in Kolkata to demand safety for women across the country.

The doctor’s case has also put a spotlight on challenges faced by healthcare workers, who have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the murder and a federal law to protect them - especially women - at work.

Federal Health Minister JP Nadda has assured doctors that he will bring in strict measures to ensure better safety in their professional environments.

But for the parents of the doctor, it's too little too late.

“We want the harshest punishment for the culprit," the father said.

“Our state, our country and the whole world is asking for justice for our daughter."
