Menstruation is normal, period

Nepali activist Radha Paudel who works on dignified menstruation through her foundation shows in her new book just how pervasive menstrual discrimination is around the world.

Menstrual Stories: An Anthology from Global South is replete with tales of stigma, taboo, mockery, disrespect, shame, teasing, bullying by boys that persists.

Radha Paudel is a nurse who has worked in government hospitals across Nepal, and wrote an harrowing account about being caught up in the Maoist attack on Jumla in 2002. She turned into a dignified menstruation activist because of the discrimination and ostracisation she herself faced while growing up in Chitwan.

She established the Global South Coalition for Dignified Menstruation and Radha Paudel Foundation which hosted a six-month virtual fellowship in 2023 with participants from Austria, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Malawai, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the UK.

The book is an outcome of those interactions where campaigners across the world spoke about their own experiences of having their first periods, the reaction of their families, school mates and peers.

A thread running through all the stories is that no matter where in the world women are, rich countries or poor, North or South, educated or uneducated, menstrual taboos persist to a greater or lesser degree.

There are stories of girls not telling their parents because the first bleeding was “too sensitive”, the restrictions on the freedom of young women by family members, schools not teaching reproductive health with accuracy and the right values.

In one school in Dhaka, biology text books had the chapter on sexual reproduction stapled shut. Many young men in Colombia’s conservative Catholic families even refused to answer questions in a survey about menstruation, and some confused menstruation with masturbation.

In Nepal, the lack of separate restrooms for girls in schools and shame about menstruation has contributed to the high female dropout rate after Grade 5. The practice of chhaupadi in western Nepal is an extreme form of menstrual banishment.

Paudel does not like the word chhaupadi because it is “too neutral”, and does not convey the discrimination.

The books also has examples of women across the world resisting the stigma and taboos, and spreading awareness.

A marathon runner in the UK recently ran without pads and ‘let the blood flow freely’. A Chinese athlete who won a medal at an international sports event was frank in her answer to a question from the media about her performance: she said she was having her periods.

Writes Laura Contreras-Aristizabal from Colombia: “It is ironic that despite the fact that more than half of the world’s population is made up of women and menstruating individuals, menstruation is still stigmatized and a taboo subject.”

We know there are even more serious problems of female genital mutilation in some parts of the world. But for the more pervasive and persistent occurrence of menstural discrmination, this slim volume offers practical solutions in schools and society to ensure a more dignified approach to accepting the monthly biological cycle in women without stigma.

Increased government censorship alongside unpaid wages doubles the challenges the country’s journalists encounter.

Nepal’s Media Landscape Faces a ‘Watershed Moment’

KATHMANDU, NEPAL — Four years after a pandemic upended Nepal’s media sector and eliminated more than two-thirds of the print, radio and television jobs in the country, work for journalists remains scarce. Salary cuts for many people haven’t been restored — some journalists are even fighting in court to get the pay they’re owed. On top of that, government pressure that intensified during the pandemic is only growing stronger.

“The media simply wasn’t prepared for crisis management,” says Rabi Raj Baral, founder of Media Kurakani, a popular blog focused on press issues. Nepali media was in trouble anyway, he says, but the pandemic laid bare the problems.

Freedom Forum, a Nepali organization that tracks press freedom, calls this a “watershed moment” for Nepali media. Like in many countries, the government in Nepal engaged in censorship efforts during the pandemic to manage messaging around the virus’s spread. But now, years after the pandemic eased, multiple new bills are sparking concerns about a fresh wave of restrictions.

Some bills were approved in April, and some are still pending, but all attempt to consolidate media control under a government-sanctioned council. The government has also introduced guidelines to prevent some communication it considers problematic on messaging systems including Facebook, Viber and WhatsApp. The guidelines are vague, critics say, so the government can interpret them to its own convenience.

At the same time, Freedom Forum has stated that media houses must respect the labor rights of working journalists. That critique came after dozens of journalists filed complaints against media houses, largely Kantipur Media Group, for unpaid wages, according to the Federation of Nepali Journalists. In 2023, a labor court froze the accounts of Kantipur Media Group after those complaints.

The crisis in Nepal mirrors global trends, where media outlets are grappling with dual threats: economic instability and rising political pressures. As newsrooms continue to shrink, the ability of the press to fulfill its essential role, especially during pivotal moments such as elections, is increasingly compromised. Reports from organizations like Reporters Without Borders highlight how the pandemic was leveraged to undermine press freedom in various nations, raising concerns about the future of independent journalism. Some governments, in the name of fighting fake news during the pandemic, censored news media. An Amnesty International investigation found that a host of countries shut down the internet, and news organizations entirely, ostensibly to end disinformation.

In Nepal, the stakes are high. Newsroom cuts undermined the vibrant media environment that flourished after the country’s decadelong civil war ended in 2006. Meanwhile, government pressure continues. Freedom Forum found that “intimidation via cyberspace” increased in 2023. There were 52 incidents of violations of press freedom.

In May this year, Kailash Sirohiya, chairman of Kantipur Media Group, was arrested on accusations that he held multiple citizenships. The arrest happened shortly after the newspaper published stories accusing then-Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane of misappropriating money — and the complaint leading to the arrest was made by Lamichhane’s political party.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, in response to the arrest, called on Nepal’s government to not “harass or intimidate” the media group in retaliation for its reporting.

Sirohiya’s release nine days later did little to quell concerns that Nepal is sliding toward authoritarianism, says Umesh Chauhan, an editor at Kantipur, a daily newspaper.

Governments around the world discredit media groups whose coverage they dislike, he says. If the media gets distracted by these issues, it will be a crisis.

“But if the media remains undistracted in its duties, the profession can always move forward,” Chauhan says.

Essay on Television for Students and Children

500+ words essay on television.

Television is one of the most popular devices that are used for entertainment all over the world. It has become quite common nowadays and almost every household has one television set at their place. In the beginning, we see how it was referred to as the ‘idiot box.’ This was mostly so because back in those days, it was all about entertainment. It did not have that many informative channels as it does now.

Essay on Television

Moreover, with this invention, the craze attracted many people to spend all their time watching TV. People started considering it harmful as it attracted the kids the most. In other words, kids spent most of their time watching television and not studying. However, as times passed, the channels of television changed. More and more channels were broadcasted with different specialties. Thus, it gave us knowledge too along with entertainment.

Benefits of Watching Television

The invention of television gave us various benefits. It was helpful in providing the common man with a cheap mode of entertainment. As they are very affordable, everyone can now own television and get access to entertainment.

In addition, it keeps us updated on the latest happenings of the world. It is now possible to get news from the other corner of the world. Similarly, television also offers educational programs that enhance our knowledge about science and wildlife and more.

Moreover, television also motivates individuals to develop skills. They also have various programs showing speeches of motivational speakers. This pushes people to do better. You can also say that television widens the exposure we get. It increases our knowledge about several sports, national events and more.

While television comes with a lot of benefits, it also has a negative side. Television is corrupting the mind of the youth and we will further discuss how.

How Television is    Harming the Youth

Additionally, it also makes people addict. People get addicted to their TV’s and avoid social interaction. This impacts their social life as they spend their time in their rooms all alone. This addiction also makes them vulnerable and they take their programs too seriously.

The most dangerous of all is the fake information that circulates on news channels and more. Many media channels are now only promoting the propaganda of the governments and misinforming citizens. This makes causes a lot of division within the otherwise peaceful community of our country.

Thus, it is extremely important to keep the TV watching in check. Parents must limit the time of their children watching TV and encouraging them to indulge in outdoor games. As for the parents, we should not believe everything on the TV to be true. We must be the better judge of the situation and act wisely without any influence.

The highest peak in the world, Mt.Everest attracts thousands of tourists every year. For administrative purposes, Nepal has been divided into seven provinces, and the provinces are divided into 77 districts. the districts   are further divided into municipalities and rural municipalities.

The magnificent mountains in the north, undulating slopes, passes, swift-flowing crystal-like rivers, lakes, valleys, tars, etc are attractive things that identify Nepal as a piece of heaven. It has been a major choice of a large number of foreign tourists for the last few decades. The world's highest mountain Mt. We are renowned around the globe for not only our natural heritage but also for our cultural heritage. The major heritages that are listed in the World Heritage List such as Lumbini, Chitwan National Park, Sagarmatha National Park and many more introduce us as prosperous people of small heaven. Moreover, one can see several temples, and Kathmandu is a city of temples.

It is the land that gave birth to world-famous persons. Gautam Buddha, the preacher of peace and founder of Buddhism, Prithivi Narayan Shah, the builder of modern unified Nepal. Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first human to reach the summit of Mt. Everest with Hilary, etc. were those who possessed to Nepal. Not only them, but brave soldiers such as Bal Bhadra Kunwar, Amar Singh Thapa, Bhimsen Thapa, and others demonstrated extraordinary bravery in preventing the British empire from colonizing Nepal.

Though Nepal is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious country, there has not been any conflict between any group in the name of language, religion, or ethnicity. the unity among diversity that is prevalent in Nepal proves that Nepalese are cooperative and peace-loving. It also inspires other nations to follow its people's harmonious unity. Nepalese people respect guests as their gods since there is a popular belief that  "Atithi Debo Bhawa". It is a strong example to prove that Nepalese are spiritually rich though they are economically poor. Nepalese people love freedom and democracy. That is why they have fought several times for democracy through their leaders deceiving them time and again. Recently, Nepal has been declared a republic country and promulgated a new constituent.

Essay on My Country Nepal | 700+ Words

Essay on My Country Nepal

Essay on My Country Nepal | Paragraph Writing 600+ Words

My country is the land of diversity and is very unique. My country Nepal lies in the Southern part of Asia. It is surrounded by two powerful countries India and China and is landlocked. It has an area of about 147,516 sq. kilometers. Although small, my country is diverse both in terms of geography and culture. It is like a beautiful garden with many people from different backgrounds. It is a country with a variety of castes and cultures.

Nepal’s flag is also the most unique to the world. Our country’s flag stands out among the rest due to its shape. The colors and symbols of our flag also represent the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.

In my country Nepal, we can find places with altitudes ranging from as low as 70 meters to the highest peak in the world 8848 meters. It is divided into 3 regions Terai, Pahad, and Himal with the temperature of the place varying from hot to cold. Each region has its own specialty. Nepal’s Himalayan regions have high and mighty mountain ranges that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country Nepal.

For You: Essay on Importance of English Language

The Hilly region is full of green hills and a very cool temperature to live in. It has many historical and religious places. Terai too is mostly a flat stretch of land with fertile soil. It is the granary of Nepal where most crops are grown. It is also an industrial region of our country.

The flora and fauna of my country are also very diverse. The difference in altitudes makes our country have various ecosystems. Foreigners from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s reach of flora and fauna, rivers, lakes, cliffs, waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, and many other beautiful landscapes. The natural beauty of my country Nepal is difficult to find in other places.

Our country also has sites of great religious and historical importance where thousands of pilgrims visit every year. Places like Pashupatinath, Muktinath, Lumbini, Swyambunath, etc are very popular. It is already a pride to have come from such a country.

Essay on My Country Nepal

Our country also ranks in the top 5 for water resources. For such a small country to have rich water resources it is a boon. If fully utilized we can provide electricity to other countries too. Important personalities like King Janak, Gautam Buddha, Arniko, Bhrikuti were also born in Nepal. They all carry historical and religious importance even up to date. Our country’s warriors and commanders are still known today for their bravery and courage. It is also the reason our country never has to celebrate independence day as we never were colonized.

Nepal is also blessed with people of different backgrounds and ethnicity. In the past, many people had migrated to Nepal and settled here and hence the diversity. My country Nepal is also secular and respects all religions equally despite the numbers. There are 126 castes in Nepal and behind them, every culture has its significance. Each culture has its unique festivals and traditions. People also celebrate each other’s festivals with great fun. Nepali people are known for their hospitality and friendliness too.

But even after nature blessing our country, we have not been able to fully utilize it. Problems such as corruption and political instability run deep in the country. Our natural resources are not being taken care of properly and our country is being poor day by day. People are rich but the country is poor. Poverty is also seen in our country. Lack of proper management of wastes has also polluted our water and slowly destroying our forests. This also means our plants and animals are slowly being extinct. Illegal hunting and farming of precious animals and plants are also ruining our ecosystem.

This is why to save our country from further danger and poverty proper management and a responsible leader are required. The citizens of our country should also feel responsible for the country and not only blame the leaders. Proper plans and policies should be required to protect our resources. Social evils such as discrimination should also be tackled. Conservative-minded people should be given awareness and strict punishments for corruption and other illegal acts should be given. Employment opportunities should also be created as many people are leaving the country for jobs abroad.
