Our customizable Creative Writing Certificate program provides individualized guidance from experienced instructors who have published works in multiple genres. Explore methodologies across all writing categories as you refine both your personal style and voice utilizing the most effective tools and techniques. Schedule flexibility combined with a variety of elective options allows you to tailor the curriculum based on personal interests and skill sets. Program objectives

After successfully completing this program, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of professional writing techniques spanning all aspects of the writing process
• Utilize the practical knowledge of how to grow their platform, evaluate the commercial potential of their work, and move toward publishing
• Create a tangible testament to their academic achievement in the field

Certificate requirements

To receive the certificate, students must:

• Complete all four (4) of the core courses
• Complete at least three (3) elective courses
• Attend at least 80% of the class sessions in each course
• Satisfy all program requirements within 18 months

All courses are also offered open enrollment, meaning anyone can register for them regardless of affiliation with Emory or desire to complete the certificate program. Students must apply for and be accepted into the Advanced Revision Workshop .

Creative Writing for Visual Artists

The School of Visual Arts online courses are hosted in Canvas, our College-wide learning system. Most computers (5 years old or newer recommended) can access the course(s) without a problem. The courses work with Windows (Windows 7 and newer), Macintosh (Mac OSX 10.10 and newer), and Linux (chromeOS). Participants will need a minimum screen size of 800x600 (the average size of a netbook) and good broadband (Minimum of 512kbps) Internet connection to participate in the online courses.

One business day after completing registration, you will receive a confirmation email from the Registrar’s Office which includes a schedule, username and password .

The mission of the Central Carolina Community College Continuing Education Creative Writing Program located at the Pittsboro Campus seeks to create a community for writers, whether they are beginners or seasoned veterans, to teach craft as an art form, and to foster imagination and excellence. We commit to sharing the beauty and power of good writing to transform both writers and readers.

We offer a variety of craft-driven courses in the following areas:

Earn a Creative Writing Certificate

Since the fall of 2009, CCCC-Pittsboro Continuing Education has offered courses and one-day classes in writing short stories, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenplays, and children's literature. The new certificate program will acknowledge completion of 120 hours of classes.

• To learn from professionals in a dedicated, supportive environment
• To try out different forms of writing and refine your goals
• To complete a body of work and achieve personal goals
• To receive acknowledgment for intensive, continued study of creative writing
• To add creative writing credits to a resume
• To add to your qualifications for college admission
• To create a portfolio for admission to an MFA program
• To renew teacher certification

Certificate Requirements:

• There are no admission requirements. Writers of all levels are welcome to earn the Certificate.
• Fill out this form to notify Continuing Education at CCCC of your intent to complete requirements for a certificate Declaration of Intent .
• Successfully complete 120 hours of creative writing classes or workshops offered by the Continuing Education Department of CCCC (Pittsboro). For each class, obtain an instructor's signature on this form ( Verification of Course Completion ) and present it to the Continuing Education department.
• Successfully complete a 10-hour class in Revision as a Strategy, and two 5-hour workshops: Strategies for the Writing Life (5 hrs) and Pathways to Publication (5 hrs). These three classes will be divided over the course of our fall, summer and spring classes.

Continuing education.

The University of Idaho offers a variety of courses for individuals to continue their education, whether in Moscow or not. Continuing education courses fall into three categories:

• Conferences, courses, seminars, or workshops offered by academic departments;
• Credit and non-credit courses offered by the Engineering Outreach Program ; and
• Independent Study in Idaho courses.

Courses Offered by Academic Departments

Several academic departments offer conferences, courses, seminars, and workshops throughout the region where students can earn U of I credit or Continuing Education Units (CEU) (see regulation D-5 for information on CEUs). These conferences, courses, seminars, or workshops are taught by U of I faculty members or by qualified local instructors who are approved by the respective college in which the course is offered.

Students earning U of I credit for these conferences, courses, seminars, and workshops must be admitted by the U of I Admissions Office; students earning credit through Independent Study in Idaho or CEUs do not.

The Creative Writing program offers students a range of beginning, intermediate, and advanced workshops in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Undergraduate Creative Writing majors will take three writing workshops of their choice, in addition to a Form & Theory course. Creative Writing majors, working closely with a distinguished core faculty of professional writers, can enrich their background in literature provided by the English major curriculum with a rigorous apprenticeship to their craft.

In addition, the program regularly invites writers to campus for residency, workshops, and readings. Each year, five eminent authors are invited to participate in the three-day Spring Literary Festival. These visits provide a unique complement to the student's workshop experience.

Many undergraduates publish their writing in Sphere (the undergraduate literary magazine), while others gain valuable editing experience. Undergraduate writers regularly organize formal and informal readings of their own work.

Undergraduate Creative Writing students have gone on to further study in M.F.A. and/or Ph.D. programs in Creative Writing. Many have gone on to publish their work.

Program Overview

In the English – Creative Writing major, students engage with genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from the inside out, by generating and revising their own work as well as exploring closely how published work uses the techniques of craft.

All creative writing students participate in workshops led by nationally recognized writers which focus on understanding and constructing different literary forms; to achieve these goals, workshops emphasize the study of texts by established writers as well as students’ experimentation with their own creative process. The major is also flexible enough to match your own interests and goals: students can fulfill up to 12 of the required hours in the major with courses focusing on literature, rhetoric, or literary theory, or by combining these with apprenticeship or internship experiences.

To ensure a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge that employers and graduate schools expect from any English graduate, the English – Creative Writing major includes the English Core in analysis, research, and literary history. 

Careers and Graduate School

After a curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking and analytical reading as well as multiple genres of writing, English – Creative Writing students enjoy the same wide variety of opportunity upon graduation that other English majors have.

Many of our graduates go on to graduate programs, not only M.A. or M.F.A. programs in Creative Writing but also programs in information science, education or law. Others work in publishing, web content development, grant-writing and community organizing, advertising, or other creative industries. Having invested in developing their own creativity as well as in the well-rounded education that this degree requires, English – Creative Writing students can face the unexpected challenges of the 21 st -century job market with confidence.

Potential employers for those who hold a degree in Creative Writing include, but are certainly not limited to, newspaper and magazine organizations, the entertainment industry, government agencies, institutions of higher education, public and private K-12 schools, publishing companies, marketing agencies, non-profit organizations, businesses, etc.

Freshman/First-Year Admission: Enrollment in an English major entails no requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Change of Program Policy: For students currently enrolled at Ohio University, transferring into an English major requires a 2.0 GPA. Students choosing to transfer into the English – Creative Writing major should contact the director of undergraduate studies in the English department for assistance. Students who wish to add an English major in addition to another major program should seek assistance from the director of undergraduate studies; students with a second major outside the College of Arts and Sciences will be responsible for meeting the degree requirements of both the English – Creative Writing major and the College of Arts and Sciences.

External Transfer Admission: For students currently enrolled at institutions other than Ohio University, transferring into an English major entails no requirements beyond University admission requirements. Students should contact the director of undergraduate studies in the English Department for assistance.

Adult Learning Center

The Adult Learning Center provides quality instruction in reading, writing, math, and the English language to help adults transition into college and/or prepare for the GED tests. Services are available in Grangeville, Lewiston, Moscow, and Orofino.

What is Adult Basic Education?

ABE is a basic skills program for adults 16 years of age and older who are not currently enrolled in high school. We also serve adults who have graduated from high school and want to improve their reading, writing, or math skills so they can transition into college or the workforce. All new students attend an orientation session that covers program expectations and provides assessments.

Each student's course of study is framed by an educational plan based on the unique needs of the student. ABE offers structured classes at various levels of reading, writing, and math. Our students have the option of online instruction as well.

ABE can help you:

• Improve math, reading, and writing skills.
• Prepare for college.
• Prepare for and pass the GED.
• Become digitally literate.
• Learn to speak English (for non-native learners).
• Prepare for U.S. Citizenship
