FAQs on Career Presentation

What should be included in a career presentation.

A compelling career presentation begins with a captivating introduction, often a personal story or relevant industry example. It should provide insight into your unique career journey, highlighting milestones, challenges, and successes. Articulate your career goals and their alignment with your values and passions.

Share your core skills, competencies, and educational background, showcasing how your experiences have shaped your path. Delve into your work history, emphasizing key roles, projects, and lessons learned. Express your commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.

Address challenges you've encountered, demonstrating resilience and problem-solving skills. Outline your vision for the future, describing the impact you aspire to make and the steps you plan to take.

Throughout, offer practical advice and insights based on your experiences. Use visuals, multimedia, and interactive elements to engage your audience. Summarize key takeaways, invite questions, and foster meaningful dialogue.

What is the purpose of the career presentation?

The purpose of a career presentation transcends the mere dissemination of information; it is a powerful opportunity to inspire, guide, and connect. At its core, a career presentation is a beacon illuminating the path ahead. A career presentation goes beyond the boundaries of a resume or LinkedIn profile. It’s a platform to share personal narratives, lessons learned, and the invaluable wisdom accrued over time. It encapsulates the spirit of mentorship, offering insights and advice that can shape the trajectory of others' careers. In essence, the purpose of a career presentation is to illuminate, motivate, and connect. It's an instrument of empowerment, a catalyst for growth, and a testament to the belief that each career is a unique and evolving narrative waiting to be written.

What is career life cycle?

The career life cycle is a dynamic and multifaceted journey that everyone embarks upon, characterized by distinct phases of growth, learning, and transformation. This unique trajectory defies a one-size-fits-all approach, as it is deeply influenced by personal aspirations, external opportunities, and the evolving professional landscape. It starts with the exploration phase. This is a period of self-discovery, where individuals identify their passions, strengths, and career preferences. It's a time of educational pursuits, skill acquisition, and the cultivation of foundational knowledge. As the journey progresses, the establishment phase unfolds. Here, individuals enter the workforce, building their reputation, and gaining practical experience.

The career life cycle then enters the expansion phase, characterized by the pursuit of new challenges and opportunities. Individuals may explore career paths, industries, or entrepreneurial ventures. It’s a phase, where innovation and adaptability emerge as the driving force. Finally, the culmination phase marks the twilight of one's active career.

These 7 Underrated iOS 18 Features Are Worth Getting Excited About

How to upload free books to your kindle, these photography rules leveled up my smartphone photos.

Talking about your career journey is a nerve-wracking exercise, whether in an interview or presenting to a large audience. You can make this process much more exciting by narrating your journey as a story.

A story that contains facts, figures, anecdotes, and more stories to illustrate your knowledge, experience, expertise, conflict resolution techniques, and insights. Here's how you can harness the power of PowerPoint to present your career journey as an interesting story:

1. Ask the Right Questions

Before you begin creating your presentation, you need to have a good idea about the content you will include in it. You can write down bullet points that act as the deck outline, or ask yourself pertinent questions. What kind of questions should you ask yourself? Here's a list to get you started:

  • Who's my target audience; recruitment teams, college/school students, job fair attendees, or working professionals?
  • What do I aim to achieve with this presentation?
  • What professional events, stories, incidents, and insights should I include?
  • What statistics, tips, and professional highlights should I mention?

Your presentation can go in widely different directions based on your answers.

2. Draw a Content Flow Chart

Man standing in front of a White Board with a Flow Chart drawn on it

Now that you have a good idea about what to include, it's time to organize this information into a seamlessly flowing story. Draw a flowchart or a simple diagram to indicate what goes where. This is the storyboarding stage, where you'll order the content and fine-tune the details to the last fact and figure.

3. Choose Content Format and Media

Different Types of Slides With Various Infographics to showcase information concisely.

Once you're done with the “what” and “where,” it's time to address the “how.” How do I present my career story as concisely as possible? Not every part of your journey needs a slide with elaborate textual content. You can use graphs and timelines to depict career trajectories and time spent in different roles. Use bolded numbers with labels or SmartArt and Charts to highlight critical statistics.

A short video can explain your work methodology with animations and voiceover. Concept images, tag clouds, and simple sketches can convey information more concisely than a slide full of text. Once you've decided how each part in the flowchart will take shape on the slides and have the media content ready, it's time to launch the PowerPoint app.

4. Pick the Right Template to Tell Your Story

Choosing the Right template in PowerPoint

Searching for story-based templates brings up lots of options on PowerPoint that have different slides to highlight stats, show graphs, depict growth, insert a video, etc.

You can insert your information in the appropriate slides, clone the ones that need repetition, delete the ones that don't fit in with your story, and insert slides from other presentation decks that cater to your requirements. Just make sure to edit the theme of this slide to match the main template.

Using a premade template to prepare a professional presentation . You'll not have to waste time deciding on fonts, colors, themes, and manually inserting diagrams and charts. You can also download or buy presentation templates from online resources like Crystal Graphics or SlideUpLift . These sites offer custom templates to showcase career journeys, with creative slides to present information concisely.

You can also use the Slide Master feature in PowerPoint to create a custom theme for your presentation.

5. Design Your PowerPoint Presentation

It's time to execute your vision. Use as many slides as you need without worrying about the length of the presentation. Here are a few quick PowerPoint tips to help you present your career journey in a stellar way:

  • Use high-quality images, videos, and graphics.

Theme Fonts feature in PowerPoint

  • Use Animations and Transitions sparingly.

Presentation Record Feature in PowerPoint

  • Use Presented View mode to check how your slides look, keep an eye on your notes, and edit as needed.

Using Section Divider Slide for Quiz Questions in PowerPoint

6. Polish Your Stories

Your career journey would be incomplete without highlighting your professional growth and maturity, lessons learned, and insights gained. Use the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Results to avoid rambling and keep it short and straightforward.

When narrating stories, describe the situation or conflict you were facing, what needed to be done, what was done, what you learned from the experience, and how it has impacted your decision-making process. The STAR method touches upon all the crucial details of a learning incident, allowing you to tell more stories in fewer words.

7. Edit Your Slides

Now you need to step into the shoes of your target audience. Look at every slide critically. Think about the value each slide adds to the rest of the presentation, and decide whether it stays or goes.

Review Feature in PowerPoint with Spellcheck and Thesaurus

Are all your stories helpful and needed? Are your statistics factually accurate? How long will it take for you to walk through the entire set? Use these and other relevant questions as markers to cut down the number of slides.

8. Deliver With Poise

Making a kick-ass presentation is just one part of depicting your career journey. The other part consists of being a good storyteller. Use the PowerPoint Speaker Coach to improve your presentation skills . Memorize your notes, pay attention to your hand gestures, make eye contact, and do not read from the slides. Practice with a timer until you can deliver it in the precise amount of time you've been allocated to present.

How To Make a Good PowerPoint Presentation for College

A must-unlock skill of every college student is creating PowerPoint presentations. Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore or senior, you’re sure to come across an assignment that requires you to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Creating PowerPoint presentations enables you to hone creativity, build public speaking abilities, improve body language and boost confidence. Those interpersonal qualities are required, not only in classes but also in workplaces.

1. Identify the key points

Before anything else, a good comprehension of the topic you want to deliver is necessary. Understanding your materials helps you be more confident when presenting and providing better slides.

Those who aren’t knowledgeable about the topic they talk about most likely put a long string of words, leading to wordy slides. However, if you comprehend the discussion well, you can put short phrases in bullet points.

2. Choose an interesting template

Never present PowerPoint with plain slides because it’s the first step to a boring performance. Besides, finding PowerPoint templates online is a piece of cake.

Many online platforms provide downloadable and free PowerPoint templates. Some websites to dive into are Slide Carnival, Powerpointify, Slides and AllPPT. They have various categories, such as education, technology, business, medical, etc.

3. Write impactfully

Now that you’ve decided on the points you want to deliver, put them into slides. Spread your points and use bullet points if possible. You can also mark some slides to add images , graphs or tables later.

There are rules of thumb that students must be aware of when creating PowerPoint presentations. The overall idea is to keep your slides concise. Here are some points worth taking notes on.

4. Add visuals

You can go to Unsplash and Freepik to search for free photos. Remember to add credit for your photos to inform audiences.

5. Edit and tidy up your slides

6. add transitions and do a final check.

Some recommendations include Fade, Push, Cut, Cover and Uncover. Consider using one type of entrance transition to begin each slide. Add emphasis transition to highlight crucial points, images or other elements.

Descriptions of career presentations

Career planning foundations.

Many students come to IU Indianapolis to prepare for a career, but have few or no concrete plans . This interactive session demonstrates the importance of setting major and career exploration goals now. Students will be able to identify personal traits to consider and will understand career exploration using information, people resources, and their own experiences. This presentation is ideal for introducing career planning to students (25–30 minutes).

FOCUS results

The FOCUS assessment, our free online assessment tool, can help students better articulate their values, interests, skills, and personality traits and can assist students in making connections between that information and major and career options that might be a good fit for their unique characteristics.

In this presentation, we discuss the purpose and benefits of assessments in career planning, provide insights into students’ results, and demonstrate how the instrument can be used as a resource for additional career exploration. You may choose to play this FOCUS overview video to introduce how to navigate FOCUS prior to students taking the assessment.

Students should use the  FOCUS assignment  to complete the assessment and begin processing on their own prior to this presentation (30–45 minutes or based on time available).

Networking and informational interviews

Encourage students to get the inside scoop on careers by speaking to people in their fields. People connections are a vital part of career exploration and planning. Students will learn what networking is, who is in their network, and how they can grow their network and make professional connections. This presentation also teaches students the power of informational interviewing and how to use this form of networking to learn about occupations, positions, and organizations. We discuss how and where to find contacts, what to ask, and the importance of following up. This presentation can accompany the informational interviewing  major career resource guide  (30–45 minutes).

Parallel planning for health care majors

Parallel planning is an expectation for all students entering health and life science fields. Most students don’t know about the wide variety of majors and careers available to them in the health care arena and developing a parallel plan early in their college careers ensures that students have explored all of their options and that they have targeted majors for which they will be both engaged in and admissible to. This presentation covers the importance of parallel planning and exposes students to available resources for developing a parallel plan.  The parallel planning major career resource guide can be used to accompany this presentation (30–40 minutes).

Fun with career games

While formal presentations are great, sometimes everyone needs a change of pace. Let us facilitate fun career-related games that sneak learning in along the way! Choices include:

Majors for Humanity Like Cards Against Humanity, Majors for Humanity is a hilariously fun game! It exposes students to those majors that can solve problems in today’s society. Students are encouraged to think outside the box and make a case for why the major they choose from their cards is the one to offer the skills and abilities to solve the problem presented.

Career Taboo Just like in Taboo, Career Taboo has words you cannot say. Students take turns in describing a career without using the obvious words to describe it so others can guess the career. A student has one minute to get through as many careers as they can. Each guessed card is a point for the team, the team that ends with the most points wins! Students will then create a description of their preferred career without using the job title and sharing with other players to see if anyone can guess it.

Major Taboo Just like in Taboo, Major Taboo has words you cannot say. Students take turns in describing a major without using the obvious words to describe it so others can guess the major. A student has one minute to get through as many majors as they can. Each guessed card is a point for the team, the team that ends with the most points wins! Students will then create a description of their preferred career without using any names of majors and sharing with other players to see if anyone can guess it. In addition, there is a one-minute challenge for students to list as many of the majors at IU Indianapolis as they can think of.

Values Card Sort This activity helps students prioritize what is important to them to see in their future careers. Most students haven’t thought of how their values and ethics fit with the career path they’ve set out on. This allows students to place these in order of what is most important and not so important for them personally. Discussions will encourage students to think about how they can use this list to make informed decisions.

Students report that they feel better able to make an informed decision regarding their major and career options after these presentations. Click below to schedule yours today!

College and Career Activities for Middle School

by  The DIY Counselor

Read Time:  min |   Career Development , College

Middle school students are my favorite! All that energy and enthusiasm. They are like sponges, just soaking up new ideas and wanting to know more! According to recent research, middle school is the prime time to promote college and career readiness. Getting students to envision their lives five or ten years down the road is a challenge. The unique role of school counselors enables us to provide experiences and resources that will help students see the future. So, what can we do to help middle school students have fun and learn about themselves?

Discover Interests

Encourage students to get involved. Middle schoolers like to stay comfortable. Extracurriculars provide opportunities for students to try new things. They can develop skills that are not learned in a classroom. Interest inventories help students to begin thinking about what they like to do. Education Planner has a great college and career section that is interactive and has a variety of activities.

Students need to see the purpose in their academics. Connecting academics to related careers can help with that. Work with classroom teachers to identify ways to promote careers in their subject area. I organize a college and career expo to introduce students to a variety of careers. Guest speakers and job shadowing are other ways to give students hands-on experience.

Explore Careers

Give students opportunities to learn about careers. There are online websites for students to learn about career pathways, career fields, and career clusters. To provide a virtual career fair, students research their favorite career and create a presentation for the class. Use learning centers, choice boards, and bulletin boards for interactive career exploration. This Careers Choice Board learning center activity is a great introduction to careers.

Discovering interests, exploring careers, and learning about colleges are ways to help middle school students become college and career ready.

Learn About Colleges

Some students have never seen a college campus, nor thought about what college to attend. Teach students about all things related to college. I use a college fact sheet that explains the different types of colleges, vocational schools, and degrees. The fact sheet compares the cost of public and private colleges. Students locate college admissions info online, where they can do virtual to urs of college campuses. Local college recruiters attend our annual college and career expo, providing students admissions and scholarship info.

Discovering interests, exploring careers, and learning about colleges are ways to help middle school students become college and career ready.

Transition to High School

Connect with your high school to create a student shadow day. Students visit the high school for a few hours, allowing time to attend classes and interact with older students. Another transition activity is a parent info night, providing course selection information and a question and answer session with the high school counselor. Similarly, invite high school students to lead a panel discussion about what to expect their ninth-grade year. Finally, encourage students to attend high school sporting events, concerts, and other types of performances to get a sense of the school culture.

There are so many ways to address college and career readiness with middle school students. It should be fun, interactive, and low pressure. Provide students with resources and experiences and they can do the rest.

A Sweet Start for #ForBrightCollegeYears

career presentation for college students

As the academic year kicks off, Yale’s campus is alive with a fresh energy and renewed spirit. The year is off to a particularly sweet start for first-year students, courtesy of #ForBrightCollegeYears .

Students pose for photos with living mascot Handsome Dan and Heidi the Yale facility dog.

Around 1,000 first-years attended the First-Year Cookie Break on Old Campus, which was open to all members of the class of 2028. The event offered an opportunity for new students to mingle, enjoy some treats from Insomnia Cookies, and begin forming connections that will shape their Yale experience.

The afternoon was made even more memorable with appearances from Yale’s iconic mascot, Handsome Dan, and Yale’s facility dog, Officer Heidi, who were instant hits among students eager for a photo-op. Students left with swag bags full of goodies, making for a spirited start to their Yale journey.

Clara Díaz Suárez ’28, from Jonathan Edwards (JE), captured the spirit of the event. “I didn't know I'd get to meet so many awesome people that I'd really want to spend time around,” she said. “It's been really fun getting to meet everyone because this is one of the events where residential colleges get to mix and I'm getting to know people outside of JE.”

Students show off their #ForBrightCollegeYears swag.

“Insomnia cookies are amazing!” said Darren Ke ’28, of Pierson College. “A lot of people have showed up. It’s very social and everyone’s just talking. [#ForBrightCollegeYears] has been really amazing for putting all of this together and getting people out to Old Campus.”

The #ForBrightCollegeYears initiative is a collaborative effort between the Office of Development, Yale Alumni Fund, and Yale Alumni Association.

About 1,000 members of the class of 2028 were in attendance.

Abby Douglas, Assistant Director of Student Engagement at the Yale College Office of Development, emphasized the initiative's mission. “It's a way for our three teams to come together and educate students about philanthropy, alumni connections, volunteerism, and all the amazing opportunities that alumni affairs and development can offer them while at Yale and after graduation,” she said.

The First-Year Cookie Break marks the start of a shared journey for incoming Yale students. With new connections made and the spirit of Yale already taking root, these students are not just beginning their academic adventure — they’re becoming part of a larger Yale community that will support and inspire them for years to come.
