Dissertation Binding and Printing | Options, Tips, & Comparison

Published on September 9, 2022 by Raimo Streefkerk . Revised on July 18, 2023.

Congratulations, you’ve finally finished your dissertation . It’s been professionally proofread and checked by a solid plagiarism checker .

The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

  • Types of binding
  • Color vs. black & white

Single vs. double-sided

  • Paper thickness

There are a few printing and binding services to choose from as well. This article presents a few options that can help you make the right decisions.

Binding keeps the pages of your dissertation together, and comes in a variety of price points. Spiral binding is cheaper, a hardcover book binding is much pricier.

The type of binding you choose can depend on:

  • Guidelines from your university or department
  • The version (draft vs. final)
  • The type of work you’re submitting ( PhD vs. master’s thesis vs. undergraduate thesis )
Drafts Bachelor’s thesis Master’s thesis PhD Dissertation

Spiral binding (± $7)

Spiral bound

  • Professional appearance
  • Opens flat, so browsing through the pages is easy
  • Fairly inexpensive

Comb binding (± $5)

Comb bound

  • Pages are easy to browse
  • Binding can be opened and closed
  • Can be cheap-looking

Fastback binding (± $8)

fastback bound

  • Professional, book-like appearance
  • Available in different colors
  • Individual sheets can come loose with time

Paperback binding ($10–20)

paperback bound

This type of binding makes your dissertation more durable and professional. In most cases, it’s possible to add front and spine lettering.

  • Durable and professional
  • Book-like appearance
  • Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding ($20–50)

hardback bound

  • Customizable cover
  • Quality comes at a price

Color vs. Black & White

Check your university’s guidelines to see if there is guidance about whether to print your dissertation in color or black & white. Note that printing in color is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a color-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is often not required.

Printing double-sided is often cheaper than printing single-sided, due to the paper savings — it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single-sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double-sided, pay attention to the following points:

  • New chapters should start on the front side of the paper. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing to print.
  • Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgments and abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
  • The page numbering is often placed in the bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.
  • Check your style guide to make sure there aren’t any rules for printing.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your printed thesis or dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75–90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation, this is likely fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100–130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines, you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor and department. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production time for printing and binding takes on average two days, and delivery takes at least another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local print shop is likely able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a print shop, there are three things you should do:

  • Save your file as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises, such as offset pages, when receiving your printed product.
  • Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional proofreading service .
  • Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, don’t forget to update the table of contents and cross-check the page numbers listed there with the actual page numbers.

The table below provides an overview of two popular dissertation printing and binding shops, including information on delivery costs and review score.

The most important factor for most students when it comes to dissertation printing is the price. The price includes factors such as the type of binding and the number of pages when printing and binding your dissertation. You can calculate the exact price for your dissertation printing beforehand in our print shop .

Would you like to print your dissertation, for instance, with 20 pages, and then bind it with the premium leather binding with additional embossed details? The estimated cost is $64.80. This is 45% less compared to other market prices! Plus: with BachelorPrint, your order is delivered for free!

At BachelorPrint, we use 100 g/m² premium paper as standard for printing and set the same price for color and black/white printing.

Where can I order my dissertation binding?

To have your dissertation printed and bound, you can either go to a copy shop or simply order your dissertation binding online. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage of the print shop is that you can conveniently place your order from home. You configure your binding and then look at the end product using our 3D live preview. Then simply order and get your order delivered the next day for free.

Which paper to use for printing and binding a dissertation?

For works, such as dissertations, either 80 g/m² paper or 100 g/m² paper is used. At BachelorPrint we use 100 g/m² paper as our standard, as it is not only more robust but also feels better when you browse through the dissertation. However, if you want to print and bind your dissertation on both sides, we recommend that you use 120 g/m² paper to ensure that the text does not show through.

Thesis Binding

Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is the conversion of your thesis or dissertation document into a printed and bound book format. Getting this done correctly involves several considerations that includes the Submission of your document for printing and binding, your choice of Paper, and the Style of binding you want.

SUBMITTING YOUR THESIS OR DISSERTATION FOR BINDING:

The first consideration for Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is whether you want your thesis or dissertation printed and bound for official submission or for your personal use, such as gifts to professors, departments, libraries, parents, sponsors, or you just want copies to preserve for future generations.

If you are officially submitting your Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding books to your

institution, you must follow their official guidelines for paper, margins, and type of binding. Every institution has

guidelines and your can ask your department or your graduate studies department for the guidelines. The quote/

ordering process for each of our 3 main types of binding is designed to accommodate all the options that most

schools require.

Binding Options Our 3 main binding options are:

  • Fabric Hardcover Binding with Gold Embossed Lettering and Emblem on the cover https://phdbookbinding.com/fabric-hard-cover/
  • Printed Hardcover Binding with wraparound full color printing on the cover https://phdbookbinding.com/printed-hard-cover/
  • Perfect Binding Softcover with wraparound full color printing on the cover https://phdbookbinding.com/perfect-binding/

But if you’re getting the books for personal use, then you have the option to choose the type of paper, binding and margin size that you prefer. Here again, our quote/order process contains all the options you might want.

Digital or Paper Submission

The second consideration is whether you want to submit a file or paper document(s) for publishing your Thesis or Dissertation. You have the option to place your order with a PDF file or with a paper document. Submitting a PDF file ( https://phdbookbinding.com/digital-printing/#2 ) of your Thesis or Dissertation allows you to do the following online, sit back and forget about it, and receive your books in the mail:

  • Choose the type of paper you want for printing ( https://phdbookbinding.com/digital-printing/#9 )
  •  Specify the pages you want to print in color. ( https://phdbookbinding.com/faq/#9 ) Yes, we allow you to specify the pages you want to print in color and you’ll be charged the color rate ONLY for the pages you specify,NOT for all the pages in your document.
  • Specify the exact lettering you want on the cover ( https://phdbookbinding.com/gold-foil-emblem-and-lettering/ )
  •  Specify the exact lettering you want on the spine ( https://phdbookbinding.com/gold-foil-emblem-and-lettering/ )
  • Specify your school emblem for the cover or request a custom emblem ( https://phdbookbinding.com/gold-foil-emblem-and-lettering/#SealList )
  • Choose the shipping speed you want for getting back the completed book(s)

Digital Submission

The option for submitting a PDF file for printing and binding is available for all the binding styles that we offer, including:

  • Fabric Hardcover Binding with Gold Embossed Lettering and Decoration on the cover https://phdbookbinding.com/fabric-hard-cover/

(2) Fill out the Quote/Order form on this site for the type of Hardcover binding you want

(3) Specify the exact lettering you want on the cover

(4) Specify the exact lettering you want on the spine

PAPER CHOICE

The second consideration for Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is choosing the type of paper that you want. We offer 5 types of paper as listed below and as explained here in greater detail ( https://phdbookbinding.com/digital-printing/ )

DiscoverPhDs_Binding_Options

If you have recently completed your dissertation congratulations are in order! But the work is not finished – you now have to get your dissertation in front of examiners in a professional format. There are a number of factors to consider when producing a physical copy of your thesis :

  • Type of binding (for example: helical or softback)
  • Paper size (are some pages better suited for A3?)
  • Print options (single or double-sided?)
  • Paper quality (a range of gsm options are available)

What is Thesis/Dissertation Binding?

Thesis binding involves fastening the physical pages of your dissertation together to produce a single presentable document. As simple as it sounds, there is a lot to get right, and dissertation binding is important in giving a good impression of your work.

What are the different types of dissertation binding?

Spiral/helical/wired binding.

Spiral binding (also known as helical binding) and wired binding are very common for bachelors and masters dissertations. These options give a professional look and allow pages to be rotated 360 degrees, making for easy reading. Spiral binding uses a plastic coil, whilst wire binding uses a metal wire.

DiscoverPhDs_Helical_Binding

Fastback/softback binding

Fastback binding (also referred to as softback binding) uses glue to keep your dissertation pages together. This is not a very common choice for dissertation binding as it is rather formal for bachelors and masters, and perhaps not formal enough for PhD theses. Fastback binding also comes with a risk of glue losing fixity over time leading to pages falling out.

DiscoverPhDs_Fastback_Binding

Thermal binding

Thermal binding is not very common but can be used for bachelors or masters dissertations. This type of binding is permanent (so pages cannot be easily added/removed) but is generally inexpensive. Another disadvantage of thermal bindings is that pages cannot be opened 360 degrees (as with fastback binding).

DiscoverPhDs_Thermal_Binding

Plastic comb binding

Comb binding involves punching holes down the side of the page and binding with a plastic comb strip. This binding option is also suitable for bachelors and masters dissertations. It is a cheap option but can sometimes become difficult to navigate as pages become stuck on the plastic combing. One advantage of plastic comb binding is that it is easy to add and remove pages.

DiscoverPhDs_Comb_Binding

Paperback binding

Paperback binding will give your manuscript the appearance of a book and comes with personalisation options i.e. a titled cover page, spine and back. This gives a very professional appearance, too formal for a bachelors or masters dissertation, but ideal for a PhD thesis.

DiscoverPhDs_Paperback_Binding

Hardback binding

Hardback binding again gives a book like appearance, but is expensive and typically reserved only for PhD theses. In addition to custom titling, spine and back, there is a range of material and colour options for hardback binding e.g. the gold lettering you may have seen on academic books.

DiscoverPhDs_Hardback_Binding

What Paper Size Should I use?

Most universities will provide very clear instruction on paper sizes, most often A4. However, some pages such as technical drawings or maps may be best shown on A3. In these cases ‘fold out’ pages are an option but must be approved by your university guidelines.

Print Options:

Check your university guidelines when deciding whether to print single or double sided. If printing double sided, be careful as some pages should not be printed back to back. For example, new chapters should start on the right hand page (of a double spread) so blank pages may be required.

What Paper Quality is Suitable?

Paper thickness is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Although there is no ideal paper thickness, too thin and you risk your dissertation feeling low quality. Too high and you risk your dissertation pages feeling like cardboard, and again pointing to low quality.

Popular UK Services:

Ryman is an affordable thesis binding service, with a range of options for dissertations and theses. Ryman often have stored on University campuses or nearby, so you can check the services provided by your local store (as an alternative to ordering online).

Doxdirect is an online service which offers a large amount of customisation when choosing a thesis binding option. The door to door service also offers a wide range of delivery and production options so you get your bound thesis in your hand as quick as possible.

Thesis Online has been around for a long time (established in 1920), and have a very good reputation. They offer an online thesis binding service and have a hand online calculator which allows you to modify your binding, printing, and deliver options and see the impact on cost in real-time.

Things to Note:

Whichever service you use to bind your thesis or dissertation, there are a few important things to remember:

When using an online service check the turnaround time. Most services take around a week to print, bind, and deliver, though faster services are available at a cost. Some universities have an onsite printing service that students can use. These services likely offer binding options which satisfy your department’s dissertation submission requirements.

An electronic copy and physical copy of your dissertation will be read differently. Whilst consecutive pages are easy to compare on a computer screen, a physical copy may have pages printed on opposite sides of a single page (if double page printed) which makes side by side comparisons difficult. This is something to consider if your text frequently refers to images or tables overleaf.

Most thesis printing services only accept PDF file formats. Ensure that when you convert your dissertation to PDF that you review the document to ensure no errors occur during conversion.

Check your university dissertation guidance on margin requirements. It is also important to factor in margins when considering binding options. Typically a minimum margin of 2.5cm is required on the side of the page to be bound.

Although it comes with an additional cost, it may be useful to purchase personal copies of your bound thesis. You can then bring your bound copy to your Viva , and ensure that what you and your examiners are looking at are identical.

Ordering print copies

Some students wish to have print copies of their thesis or dissertation, and there is an option to purchase print or bound copies through ProQuest.

Students are not required to use ProQuest as their printing or binding service.  There are many other commercial binding services for theses and dissertations available online, where you can upload your PDF and receive a printed copy in a very short amount of time for similar or lower cost than ProQuest's service.

Students selecting to use ProQuest as their printing or binding service should be aware that it will take several months to receive a print copy from ProQuest . This is due to the fact that there are many other steps that must take place to verify a student's degree completion before the manuscript is released to ProQuest for publication and printing.

UCI Libraries does not offer a printing or binding service for electronic or print submissions. We do not endorse any one binding service over others.

Bound copies may be ordered through ProQuest ( https://about.proquest.com/products-services/dissertations/authors.html ). You will not be able to obtain a bound copy of your ETD until it has been uploaded to the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database. If you have an embargo placed on your ETD in D-Scholarship@Pitt, it will not be uploaded to ProQuest until the embargo has expired.

There are several other vendors that can provide you with a bound copy of your dissertation if you provide them with a PDF copy of your document:

Wert Book Binding Thesis Printing and Binding

Thesis on Demand

PhD Book Binding

Bachelor Print Dissertation Printing and Binding

Other than ProQuest we don't have a vendor relationship with any of these entities and the listing does not constitute an endorsement or their services.

Submitting your thesis/dissertation.

Submission of the final thesis/dissertation must be within 60 days of the final exam. Students who miss the 60 day submission deadline are ineligible to register in future terms.

The Graduate School uses ProQuest to administer the electronic thesis/dissertation (ETD) submission and committee approval process that results in publication in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) database and Cornell’s Library Repository, eCommons. Before initiating the electronic process, students are required to complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates (for doctoral students only). A SED Certification of Completion is provided to the student when the survey has been completed. Once the survey is completed, the final ETD can then be submitted to the Graduate School using the ProQuest system. The SED Certification of Completion is required for submission to ProQuest.

ProQuest Submission Steps

In order to complete the submission process, you will need to have the following:

  • A single PDF file of your thesis or dissertation
  • Your abstract
  • Supplemental material
  • SED Certification of Completion

Step 1: Begin Submission Process

Master’s students go to  Cornell Master’s ProQuest site, doctoral students go to  Cornell Doctoral ProQuest site. Click on the “sign up and get started today” button and follow instructions to begin the submission process.

Submission Process: Submission steps are outlined on the left menu. You will see the items checked off as you progress through the submission steps. You must click “Save & Continue” at the bottom of each page, even pages on which you do not enter any information. Using the left menu, you can return to any page and make changes until the point of final submission.

Step 2: Publishing Options

Traditional Publishing:  “Traditional Publishing” is automatically selected and is included in the Cornell Thesis and Dissertation filing fees.

Delayed Release:  ProQuest provides six months, and one and two year embargoes. The Graduate School recommends you discuss the publishing options with your advisor. If your advisor is unavailable or has no opinion, the conservative approach is to choose a two-year embargo.

Step 3: Read and Agree to ProQuest and University Distribution License

Both ProQuest and Cornell University distribution licenses will be presented for your acceptance.

Step 4: Enter Thesis/Dissertation Information

In addition to the mandatory information, such as title and abstract, you will have the opportunity to select up to three categories (subject areas) and six key words that describe your ETD. This information will make it easier for others to find your work when searching the web.

Step 5: Upload PDF and Supplemental Files

Upload PDF: Whether you use the PDF conversion tool provided by ProQuest or you convert your document to PDF yourself, review your PDF to ensure your formatting remains as you intended after conversion.

Supplementary Materials: If supplementary materials – such as audio, video, and spreadsheets – are an integral part of your ETD, you can submit them as supplementary files during the online submission process.

Step 6: Upload Required Documents

The SED Certification of Completion if you are a Ph.D. candidate is required for submission to ProQuest.

Step 7: Register for Copyright

You can complete this process through ProQuest for a fee, or you complete the process independently through the U.S. Copyright Office.

Step 8: Order Copies

If you would like to purchase additional copies of your thesis/dissertation for yourself, your field, or your committee members, you may order bound copies through ProQuest (Order Copies page). The required bound archival copy for the library is automatically ordered for you and included in the Cornell thesis and dissertation filing fees.

Select the “Decline – do not order” option if you don’t wish to order additional copies.

Bound copies can also be ordered through Cornell Print Services .

Step 9: Review and Submit

Once the thesis editor has reviewed the formatting of your thesis/dissertation, you will receive an email to let you know whether any corrections are required. You will then have five days to make the changes and upload the revised PDF. You will not be certified for graduation until the formatting of your ETD has been fully approved by the Graduate School. You will receive a confirmation email of final acceptance.

Step 10: Submitting Revised PDF (if needed)

You will receive an email describing the formatting changes needed with instructions and a link for resubmission.

Preparing a Thesis or Dissertation

  • Degrees and Majors

Do you need a bound copy?

Consult your advisor or committee chair to find out whether your department requires you to provide a bound copy of your thesis or dissertation.

If any bound copies are needed for departmental use or for your own personal use, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for printing and binding.

If you need a bound copy

Many students choose the university's Print Services for their theses and dissertations. Here are the steps:

  • Electronic (preferred), in PDF format to insure the formatting. (To be delivered by email, disc, or flash drive.)
  • Refer to Print Services for current details for printing/copying, covers, binding, and mailing.
  • Get a binding order form from the Print Services front desk and fill it out.
  • Pay by cash, check, NCard, or a requisition from your department with Cost Object Number.
  • Deadline: 5:00 PM on Thursday. Copies can still be brought to Print Services on Fridays, but if the Bindery has already picked up the orders for the week, your order will be sent out the following Friday.

Alternatively, students may order bound copies elsewhere so long as the finished product satisfies any departmental requirements. Doctoral students may order a bound copy from ProQuest as part of the upload process.

Graduate College

Faq: costs, bound copies, and completing the process, i am beginning a new position, and my employer has requested verification that i’ve finished my degree. what are my next steps.

Sometimes a student will begin a new position before their degree is officially conferred, and their employer will request official confirmation that they’ve finished their degree. In this case, the Graduate College can provide written verification once the student has completed all degree requirements. This includes all coursework, internship completion if applicable, passing the thesis defense, and thesis submission and approval. Typically, the last step in finishing your degree is thesis submission and approval – by both the Graduate College and thesis committee.

To ensure the Graduate College can provide degree verification in a timely manner, please complete this workflow form . (To share this link, you MUST use:  https://workflow.uiowa.edu/form/degree-completion-verification ) If you have questions about thesis formatting or the submission process, please reach out to Erin Kaufman ( [email protected] ).

Where do I start for including a previously published work in my thesis?

As a first step, consult with your research or thesis supervisor for guidance on how “prior publication” is handled in your department, discipline, or field.

The thesis should be a stand-alone manuscript, meaning that if the thesis work is published in multiple independent articles, they can be included as chapters.  An introduction and conclusion to the thesis should be prepared. You must reformat the article and/or article excerpts in accord with Graduate College formatting requirements. The thesis must be a cohesively formatted document.

While most scholarly journals allow prior publications to be used in theses, check with the journal in which the article was published to confirm whether a copyright permission is required to reproduce the work in the thesis. If you reproduce or adapt a published (or accepted) journal article or portions of a journal article in your thesis, you must cite the published work in the thesis making sure to adhere to the journal’s policy regarding the appropriate formatting for the citation.

More about thesis fees.

All thesis students are billed a one-time, $145 nonrefundable thesis fee by the Graduate College to cover processing and review costs. Thesis students are also charged a $10 publication fee, which covers archiving of the thesis. For an M.F.A. hard-copy thesis, this fee includes the binding of one copy of the thesis, which will be placed in the UI Libraries. These fees are billed to your student account (U-bill) when you complete your Application for Degree.

The ProQuest registration process asks me about copyright? What do these questions mean?

The make-up of your thesis has implications for how you complete the ProQuest registration process.  For example, during the registration process, ProQuest will ask if any portion of your thesis has had its copyright registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.  If you have included a prior publication in the thesis and you’ve signed over your rights of copyright to the publisher, this would apply to your work.

For a $75 fee, ProQuest will register the copyright on your thesis with the U.S. Copyright Office, on your behalf.  Importantly, there is a difference between holding the copyright and having the copyright registered.  By virtue of being in 'fixed form', you already hold the copyright to your thesis, whether you choose to register the copyright or not.  Although your thesis is automatically copyrighted, there are certain limited benefits to officially registering the copyright.  Registering the copyright establishes a public record of the thesis and works to prevent the unlawful reproduction, use, or distribution of the work.  The copyright fee covers the U.S. copyright fee, as well as the costs to ProQuest of the copies required by the Copyright Office.  Note: If you have included co-authored works in your thesis, ProQuest will not register copyright on your behalf.  Information on filing a copyright directly with the U.S. Copyright Office can be found here .

Should I pay ProQuest to make my thesis open access?

No.  When submitting your thesis to ProQuest, you may choose either Traditional or Open Access Publishing. If you choose Open Access Publishing, ProQuest will charge you a fee of $95.  All theses are made available to the public through Iowa Research Online , the University of Iowa Libraries' Institutional Repository.  Because your thesis will be made available to the public via the UI Libraries, select Traditional Publishing.  There is no need to pay an additional $95 fee for Open Access Publishing.

Will I receive a bound copy of my thesis? Should I order one from ProQuest?

Students do not automatically receive copies of their theses, but must instead order bound copies if they wish to have them. Because they take less time to process and are less expensive (typically costing $30–45), the Graduate College recommends ordering bound copies through Thesis on Demand. You can find more information about ordering through the Thesis on Demand website .

Does the Graduate College offer LaTex support?

Neither the Graduate College nor ITS supports LaTeX templates. If you need resources for LaTeX, check with the departments, such as mathematics or engineering, that regularly use it for their manuscripts and publications.

What is the difference between the scientific/scholarly abstract and the public abstract?

The scientific/scholarly abstract is a summary of the research/work that answers the following questions (very broadly). What is the topic of your research? How did you conduct it? What are you trying to prove? What did you learn? What is the significance of your research? Think of it as an executive summary of your work. All PhD and Master's degree students must to submit a scientific/scholarly abstract. DMA and MFA students are exempt from this requirement.

The public abstract is translational and functions as an "elevator pitch" for your research. It is a summary of the research/work that is targeted to a general audience and written in lay terms. Writing a public abstract is a professional development opportunity to gain experience in articulating the value and/or purpose of your research to broader audiences, including legislators, the media, and members of the public. Every thesis must include a public abstract.

As you craft your public abstract, eliminate jargon, and explain acronyms, abbreviations, or terms specific to your discipline. Write in the active voice, and keep sentence structure simple.  If you don’t need a particular word to convey your message, delete it.  Organize your thoughts clearly.  If you are unsure about the level at which your public abstract is written, use a readability formula to see whether the writing is suitable for a general audience.

Requesting Bound Copies of Your Thesis or Dissertation

Library Copies

Roesch Library and the University Archives no longer keep paper copies (bound or unbound) of theses or dissertations. Access to these papers will be provided electronically via the library catalog, the OhioLINK catalog, and the OhioLINK ETD Center. Manuscripts submitted to the OhioLINK ETD Center are electronically archived.

Personal & Departmental Copies

Although your official thesis or dissertation will be submitted electronically, some schools and departments may still require a bound copy. Students should check with their departments to see if a thesis or dissertation needs to be bound for the school or department. If you are submitting paper copies to be bound, please make sure a copy of the Graduate Academic Affairs-approved signature page is included.

Graduate Academic Affairs will facilitate the professional binding of personal and departmental copies. Three copies may be bound at no additional charge as part of your graduation fee. There will be a nominal fee for each additional bound copy. Contact Graduate Academic Affairs for the bindery's scheduled dates for campus pickups and deliveries of bound theses and dissertations.   Note :   The student is responsible for supplying a paper copy for each bound copy requested.  Paper copies submitted for binding must be single-sided .

More information can be found on the following tabs: For Students in the College , For Engineering Students , and For Education Students .

Ordering Dissertations & Theses

Depending on the dissertation or thesis desired, UTD-affiliated users should first check the appropriate dissertations and theses database for availability. If a full-text digital copy of the dissertation or thesis is not available, the user will have several options to obtain the document:

  • Sometimes, dissertations and theses of outside universities are available to borrow via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) . Fill out the form and we will let you know if the document in question is available.
  • In the case of UTD-only dissertations and theses, a paper or microfilm copy may be your only option. Search the catalog to find out the document's availability and call number. The library has equipment for viewing, scanning, and e-mailing or printing paper and microfilm documents.
  • In some cases, it does not hurt to contact the author of the dissertation or thesis. You will likely have to conduct a web search for the author's contact information. If the author in question has a digital copy, it is not uncommon for him/her to share the document.
  • Non-UTD-affiliated users may purchase a copy of the dissertation or thesis through  ProQuest's Dissertations Express   service. If a UTD-only dissertation or thesis is available only in paper or microform format, the user must come to the library to view and digitally scan or copy the document. The Eugene McDermott Library cannot scan/digitize and transmit its paper- or microform-only theses and dissertations to remote users.
