However, when it comes time to re-enter the workforce, knowing what to put on a resume can be challenging. It's true that you've used specific skills keeping a home, but how do you word that so an employer will be impressed?

Order of Information

The order of information in this sample resume is created to highlight important skills. Some of these skills you've likely learned as a homemaker, but you'll want to focus on the skill and not highlight the fact that you learned these skills running a household.

While some employers may admire and appreciate the work involved in keeping a household running, others will feel that it isn't as pertinent as actual workplace experience.

Contact Information

At the very top of your resume, you'll want to include your name and contact information. Some people prefer to put their name as a header in a bold, dark font. This can come in handy when the employer is looking back through candidates coming in for a second interview as they can locate your resume quickly and do a fast review.

Stick to basic fonts, such as Arial or Calibri. Although a script might look pretty, it can be difficult to read and doesn't look as professional as industry standard type. Also, if you are emailing the resume as a .doc, .docx or rich text format, it might not translate well if the person on the other end doesn't have that exact font installed on his computer.

Check and double check that your contact information is correct. The phone number should be current and include the area code. If you have an email, include that as well as many employers communicate online.

The objective should tie into the job you are seeking. If you're trying to land a job as an executive assistant, then the objective should tie into the role an assistant plays.

  • For example, you might write: To obtain a position as an assistant for a busy executive where my management skills and organization can help the office run more efficiently.
  • You wouldn't write: To obtain a position where I can help others learn to cook.

It might seem obvious, but it is easy to forget to tailor the objective when applying to different companies. Take the time to read the job description and make sure your objective ties into it.

This is where you can list all of those wonderful skills you've picked up as a homemaker. Not only have you had to manage daily household tasks, you've likely scheduled vacations, been in charge of shopping, created budgets and many other tasks that can translate well to an office environment. Here are a few of the different skills you could list here:

  • Adept at creating and maintaining a budget
  • Making detailed schedules for multiple parties
  • Keeping financial statements and filing annual reports
  • Conflict resolution expert
  • Managed fundraising activities

Keep in mind skills you've picked up through volunteer work or participating in team sports with your children as well. You may have even used some of your time at home to learn Microsoft Office suite or basic web design skills. This is the place to list those skills or other skills you have.

Keep the descriptions short and to the point. A bulleted list is an excellent way to highlight your marketable skills.

This section of the resume is a place to list your higher education. Even if you did not complete your degree, you should list where you went to school, how long you attended and the skills you learned. You can also include certifications and specialized training in this section.

Skimmable Format

There are different ways you can format the education section. For example, you can format it like our sample, with your degree, school and year graduated or years attended on one line and any special awards or honors just under. Another way to format the education section is to list the degree on the top line with the year graduated and then the school directly under that with additional information in bullet points.

The main thing you need to keep in mind is whether your resume is skimmable. Those doing the hiring tend to be busy executives or human resources managers who want to glance at your resume quickly and make a determination if they'd like to proceed with an interview.

Work History

If you've been at home for a number of years, your work history may be lacking or show a big gap in time. One of the reasons for listing the work history further down on the resume is to keep from highlighting this fact. If you worked before staying at home, list these work experiences and the skills you learned while there. If you have a very sparse work history, you may want to focus on the next section instead.

Homemaker Description

It can be hard to know whether you should include your time as a homemaker in this section. It is probably best not to list a homemaker description here or try to be cute and call yourself an 'executive decision maker' or 'head diaper purchaser.' Instead, if the employer questions the time you've been out of the marketplace during an interview, you can just answer with a simple explanation that you stayed home with your children until they started school, entered high school, etc.

Then, go right into highlighting the skills you learned through volunteer work or other activities during this time. That will put a positive spin on the time out of the workforce. Many employers appreciate the skills needed to run a home and care for children, but some will not understand the myriad responsibilities required to stay at home with children.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer experience can be just as valuable for learning skill sets as career experiences. Some of the things you might include here:

  • Serving as secretary of the local PTA
  • Creating a newsletter for the softball league
  • Maintaining the church website
  • Starting a mommies' day out with the local preschool organization
  • Doing public relations work and creating flyers for the local animal rescue shelter

Your volunteer experience is likely as unique as you are, but whatever type of volunteering you've done, it can help highlight your skills and work ethic for potential employers.

Professional Affiliations

If you belong to organizations that are related to the type of work you're applying for, this is a good place to list them. Using the example of an executive assistant, you might include a membership in the International Association of Administrative Professionals or the Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries.

If the affiliation is more social in nature, then it probably doesn't belong here. You may be able to utilize work you've done for that organization under volunteer experience or skills, though.

This is another place where you need to pay attention to what the job description states. Some companies request references upfront. If that is the case, you should include a second sheet with a list of professional references. This doesn't mean your mom or best friend; you'll want to include references from people like:

  • Former employers
  • Organization directors for whom you've volunteered
  • Former clients
  • People you've volunteered with
  • Pastor of your church
  • Others who can vouch for your dedication and work ethic

Before you list anyone as a reference, check with that person that it is okay to use them as a reference while you seek employment. You'll obviously want to use only people who will give you a positive review.

If the job description does not ask for references, then you should use the standard that is on the sample, which is "References available upon request."

How to Write Your Stay-at-Home Mom Resume

Title and contact information.

Start with your name, phone number, email address, and city and state of where you currently reside (or where you plan to reside if you are relocating) at the top. Consider adding a LinkedIn profile if you’ve got one. LinkedIn is used by the majority of companies to recruit new employees. Having a detailed and keyword-rich profile will help you stand out as an applicant and will also help you get noticed by more employers.

Regarding email, I suggest creating a free Gmail account if you don’t already have one. Using email accounts like Yahoo or AOL can make you appear like you are not current with technology.

Professional Summary

Write a compelling professional summary that highlights your skills, experiences, and goals as they relate to your targeted job. This section is your elevator pitch. Here is a stay-at-home mom resume summary example:

“Accomplished finance professional with over 10 years of both professional and volunteer experience in budgeting, financial analysis, and project management. Adept at developing and implementing financial strategies to achieve both short and long-term objectives. Proven track record in managing complex, multi million-dollar budgets, reducing costs, and increasing efficiency. The stay-at-home mom skills on your resume should highlight both your soft and hard skills. Think about the skills you’ve developed that are transferable to the workplace:

Deciding to return to the workforce

So – you took a break from your career to be a stay-at-home parent and you’re thinking about returning to the workforce. This might be a return to your former career or perhaps your interests and values have changed and you are interested in something completely different. Whatever you choose, know that you have developed some incredible skills during your time away from the workforce and those skills are in demand in the workplace!

When the time comes, you might be feeling overwhelmed given the amount of information available. A quick Google search for “ how to write a resume ” yields 2,010,000,000 results. Who has time to go through all those results, much less decide what is valid information? Not a stay-at-home mom! That’s why we’re offering four top tips on what to include on your stay-at-home mom resume.

1) There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all resume

You cannot create one resume and use it for every application. You must customize each one and target it to the position. Use the job posting as your guide when writing your resume . Pull out the keywords and skills and incorporate them into your resume. Otherwise, your resume will get lost and overlooked by applicant tracking systems . It might sound like a lot of work, editing your resume for each job you apply to, but it is critical to do this so your application will catch your reader’s attention.

2) Identify the skills you gained while taking care of your kids

Everyone has something to offer. Everyone. Not only that, but every experience is marketable. It’s all in how you present it. As a stay-at-home mother, you didn’t necessarily get a paycheck each week, but that doesn’t make your experience any less valuable. 

Being a stay-at-home parent is one of the hardest jobs you will ever have, and the skills you gained are incredibly transferrable. Some of these skills include multi-tasking, communication , persuading, listening, research, organization, managing people, collaboration, and the ultimate mom skill—negotiation. The list does not stop there.

Consider ALL aspects of your life—organizing schedules, managing a household, managing finances, helping your child with schoolwork, volunteering, being on a board, involvement in your community, etc. Ask yourself and make a list: What do I do and how do I do it?

To demonstrate this, I would like to introduce you to one of my clients. Laura left her career to stay at home and raise her two kids. When they were in school, she volunteered for the school playground project. This experience included fundraising, research, community presentations, and collaborating with the school, parents, and the company that was contracted to build the playground. 

After the project was finished, the company approached Laura to see if she would be interested in a part-time role. They were so impressed with the work that she did and the skills that she demonstrated. At the time, she didn’t think much about her involvement in the project, other than ensuring a fantastic space for her kids to play. In retrospect, it was amazing to identify the tasks she did and the skills she gained.

If you are uncertain about your skills and need help identifying them, evaluate yourself. Get help from a career development professional or do some self-assessment on your own. Try reviewing these employability skills from the Conference Board of Canada to see what skills you have.

3) Address the gap in your stay at home mom resume

A resume that has a gap in employment can be a red flag for a recruiter . It is important to include employment dates, as this is information that employers look for. You will likely create a resume that contains information about the job(s) you had prior to taking time away from the workforce. Treat your experience as a stay-at-home mom as a position you held. Give it a title, include dates, and outline the activities, skills, and accomplishments you acquired during this time.

Having said that, avoid tongue-in-cheek titles such as “Chef,” “Domestic Engineer,” “Chauffeur,” and “Housekeeper.” It’s true you have done all these roles but using them as your job title on your resume will do you a disservice, confuse recruiters and applicant tracking systems, and not sell your transferable skills very well. To be blunt—you won’t be taken seriously. Instead, try something like “Career Sabbatical to Take Care of Children.” Your bullet points can include the skills you gained in your role as a stay-at-home parent that easily transfer to the position you are applying to. These are known as transferable skills.

4) Does it add value?

As you curate and compile all the content for your resume, a couple of things to keep in the back of your mind are, “Does this add value for my reader? Does it demonstrate my skills and accomplishments for the position I am applying to?” In general, it is recommended that you avoid including the following on your resume, as many of these practices are not only dated, but they are taking up valuable space on your resume:

  • Objective statements
  • References, and the term “References available upon request”.
  • Avoid including information about your sexual orientation, religious and political affiliation, marital status, age , social security number, and physical characteristics

Include activities such as volunteer or community involvement, continuing education courses , freelance projects, professional development, or self-employment you may have had during your break from your career.

Remember, a stay-at-home parent has an incredible skillset, both from their experiences as a mom, as well as her past experiences in other areas of life. By taking the time to identify the value you bring, it will make it easier to communicate this on your stay-at-home mom resume and to demonstrate your value to your next employer.

COVID-19 and stay at home moms

COVID-19 wreaked havoc on women in the workforce, forcing as many as 4,637,000 women to lose their payroll jobs according to The New York Times . One of the main reasons is because there is now so much uncertainty when it comes to their children. Schools have had to switch back and forth between having students work from home or go to class—or a hybrid of the two.

Because of this, moms are needing to stay home. Either that or they take on additional expenses that come with childcare. But unfortunately, childcare is simply not in the budget for most. In fact, The New York Times also reported that 32 percent of women between ages 25 and 44 blamed childcare for their unemployment. 

Below are a few additional statistics when it comes to stay-at-home moms and the pandemic:

  • Nine percent —that’s the drop in the labor force participation of unpartnered mothers. This is also the largest among all of the groups of parents. ( The New York Times )
  • 66 percent of mothers reported being responsible for the childcare when it comes to “partnered parents.” ( Los Angeles Times )
  • 80 percent of mothers have reported being primarily responsible for doing housework since the onslaught of the pandemic. ( Los Angeles Times )

Working mothers are also twice as worried as working fathers that they are being judged on their performance due to having to care for their children during the pandemic, according to The New York Times .

If you’re getting ready to jump back into the workforce after taking a break to care for your kids, you’re likely eager to use your professional skills again, make some new acquaintances, and, of course, collect a paycheck. One thing you may be less excited about? Writing a cover letter.

Creating a letter that eloquently and succinctly expresses your interest in the position and promotes your skills may seem especially daunting if you’re out of practice. But there’s no need to panic. Instead, think of it as an opportunity to tell your story—because you are worthy of consideration even if there’s a gap in your employment.

While it never hurts to review general cover letter advice and read through examples , your situation is unique and should be treated that way. The following cover letter tips are a great place to start and will help put you on the path to restarting your career.

1. Don’t Hide It

When hiring managers look at your resume, chances are good they’ll notice that you’ve been sidelined for a bit. That’s all the more reason not to leave it out of your cover letter.

“It’s always better to call the gap out, rather than wait for someone to read it on a resume and ask about it,” says career coach Megan Crawford, founder of Your Job Search Coach. “The recruiter or hiring manager will relate more if the person is direct about it in the letter.”

As for where you should address it, Crawford advises working it in close to the top, after you’ve explained your interest in the position and why you’d be excited to join the company.

2. Be Confident, Not Apologetic

When parents who’ve been at home for a few years come to see Crawford, many start the conversation feeling burdened by the need to address their employment gap. But, she says, “You should be proud of the fact that you took care of your kids. If that confidence comes through in your cover letter, it’s going to come through in your interview, and the more success you’re going to have.”

Crawford cautions parents to resist the urge to apologize or overcompensate by writing four paragraphs when a simple sentence will suffice. “People want to write a biography, and the reality is that recruiters don’t have time to read that,” she says.

Instead, keep it brief and keep it straightforward. It can be something as direct as, “I spent the last five years raising my kids and I’m excited to join a new organization.” From there, move on to talk about your skills and how they align with the company’s needs.

3. Shine a Spotlight on Transferable Skills

When Neely Raffellini, a career coach and the founder of 9 to 5 Project , meets with clients transitioning back to the workforce, she brings out a transferable skills worksheet and asks them to write down any skills they’ve used during their time at home. “You can count volunteer experience, the Junior League, continuing education or courses,” she says. “Many people believe that just because those things are not in a professional environment that they don’t count, and that’s just not true.”

As Crawford puts it, “Mention any experience that’s not paid, as long as it relates to the job you’re going after.” For example, if you’ve spent any time volunteering—whether it’s for the PTA or a local charity—you could talk about how you took a leadership role in fundraising or event planning. Or if you work in marketing and recently took an online course about best practices for how to market a business on the latest social media platform, include that.

As for whether or not you should give a nod to the skills you used at home with the kids—say, multitasking, conflict negotiation, or successfully running a household—proceed with caution. “You need to use your judgement,” Raffellini says. “If the company is conservative, it won’t come across the right way—but that may not be the case with a startup or a company or position where you’ll be working with children.”

At the end of the day, employers just want to know how you can help them and why you’re right for the position, so be careful not to force a connection that doesn’t exist. “To take them down another path of irrelevant skills is not a good choice,” Crawford says.

4. Don’t Overthink It

We know that this is easier said than done, but don’t get too hung up on writing the perfect cover letter. “I try to encourage my clients not to put so much pressure on themselves,” Raffellini says. “Just tell your story, show how you can help the company, and then let your resume speak for itself.”
