build your life resume review

BYLR stands for "Build Your Life Resume". You see, we don't believe in resumes in the traditional sense… we believe in life resumes. Doing more. Accumulating experiences. Living life for a living.

The reality is the more you experience the more you have to offer. This community was established to help people get more out of life. Period. Sure we have work, responsibilities and obligations….but we also only have one go around at life.

BYLR was founded by Jesse Itzler, a serial entrepreneur, author, endurance athlete and part owner of the Atlanta Hawks. Over the last years Jesse has amassed an amazing life resume. He built and sold multiple businesses, ran 100 mile races, was a rapper, lived on a monastery with monks, managed RUN DMC , wrote a #1 bestselling book and has raised an amazing family along the way.

In BYLR the goal is to share Jesse's best practices, mentors and advisors with the BYLR community. We want everyone to leave with winning habits, winning routines and a winning mindset.

Through our programs like 30 Days of Excellence, The Big A## Calendar Club, Camp BYLR and our foundational BYLR course (which is on this portal) we offer a variety of ways for you to start building a life of memories and accomplishments.

Thanks for being here.

9 Best Resume Builders of 2024: Pros and Cons

April 18, 2024

Building a resume from scratch can be too much work that isn’t worth the hassle. Using resume builders helps you design a beautiful resume, with the right content, and tailored for your job allowing you to land more interviews and hopefully score the offer you’ve always wanted for yourself. By using a resume builder, you’ll have access to professionally designed resume templates, AI functionality, and personalized resume feedback so you can stand out among other job seekers during your job search. This post will highlight some of the best resume builders of 2024 and includes pros and cons for each.

Want to use the best resume builder?

Sign up for Huntr to build your resume, get feedback and a little AI help, and more.

If you’re looking for one of the best resume builders of 2024, you’ll want to turn your attention to Huntr. For years, Huntr was known as one of the leading job trackers in the job search space. As of February 2024, Huntr now has a resume builder with a resume checker that grades your resume, a resume tailor that highlights keywords to match them with your job listing, and a whole suite of AI tools, like an AI cover letter generator , mock interview questions, follow up email templates, and more. Huntr is a resume builder with an entire collection of other job search tools to help you land your next role faster. Huntr’s resume templates are professionally designed to help you present your work experience in the best way possible.

  • Maximized with AI functionality to help you write your resume
  • Includes a resume checker which grades your resume based on its content, completion, and other elements
  • ATS-friendly
  • Resume designs that are beautifully designed and professional
  • Easy to tailor your resume to jobs with keyword, qualifications, job title, and responsibilities matching
  • Store countless job tailored resumes in one place
  • Easy to download your resume as a PDF in one click
  • Comes with a whole suite of other important job search tools
  • Easily import your LinkedIn job details into Huntr
  • Since designs are made to be professional, you won’t find charts or graphs in them if you needed them
  • There is a cost associated with the tool, but it’s still cheaper than hiring a resume writer and there is a ton of functionality to give you the same feedback a person would

Unlike traditional resume builders, Canva is actually a design tool that allows you to build a resume. As a result, the focus of the resume is on the design. While Canva has many resume designs to choose from, a lot of them are overly quirky, which isn’t practical to use for a professional job. You probably don’t want to use a design with flower graphics for a job as a lawyer. The resume designs on Canva are best for teenagers or creative industry professionals. The main value of Canva as a resume builder is that you’ll be able to drag and drop your content anyway you want, allowing you to truly customize your resume your way. If you’re competent in Canva design, you might even choose to use the platform to design your own resume from scratch.

  • You can print your resume design using Print with Canva
  • 100% customizable
  • Easy to download as a PDF
  • Countless tacky resume designs to sift through
  • Many resume templates include photos, which isn’t recommended for use in the US, UK, and Australia
  • The designs aren’t rigid so it’s more likely that you’ll make formatting mistakes
  • Many of the designs focus on the visual elements rather than work experience, making it less practical for a professional with a ton of experience under their belt
  • Hard to sift through the collection of resume templates to find a standard resume template
  • Finding icons that match the aesthetic can be hard if wanting a different icon
  • There’s no page two design in the same aesthetic in case the content carries over to a second page
  • The best designs are gated under a paid plan
  • Can’t download as a Word Doc

3. LinkedIn

The LinkedIn resume builder is an easy way to create a resume. Since you use LinkedIn to add all your job details, you’ll be able to click a few buttons for a ready-made resume to be created. The main downside is that it looks more like a print out of a LinkedIn profile rather than a professionally-designed resume, so while it can be helpful in desperate situations, the format isn’t ideal. It also doesn’t add your phone number to your resume, which is kind of unhelpful if you’ve got to do phone interviews. You’ll need to do a ton of modifying on it to remove most of your work history because it adds all of your jobs you’ve ever had posted about on LinkedIn. It also draws attention to your LinkedIn profile, which is helpful if you’re active on the platform, but could be negative if you aren’t an active user or post critical content in comments.

  • Free to use
  • Adds all your LinkedIn content into a resume, such as work experience, education, and skills
  • Has a small keywords list you should add to your resume if applying for a specific role
  • Only one resume template and it’s unattractive
  • Includes company logo on resume, which isn’t a standard practice
  • Adds your entire LinkedIn profile history, which isn’t ideal for a resume, so you’ll need to modify a lot
  • Adds your most common skills, which might have been upvoted in a previous job or a different kind of role and so is irrelevant to the current job
  • Lacks a cohesive design for multi-page resumes, only adds your name to the footer

One of the best resume builders is Zety. As it has AI functionality, it’s a go-to choice for a ton of people. However, a quick look at customer reviews shows that customers often feel “scammed” by Zety financially. People often create a resume during a free trial trying to cancel the subscription, only the subscription button doesn’t work and they end up stuck paying for a subscription they thought they canceled months earlier. As a resume builder, their tool works great. Their customer support, on the other hand, could use some work which ultimately creates a bad user experience despite having a good selection of resume designs that are color-customizable.

  • Color customizable in 24 different colors
  • Many resume designs
  • Only have a 14 day trial, with no warning of trial expiring
  • Doesn’t accept some popular forms of payment, such as CashApp
  • Can’t download your resume until you pay
  • Many customers complain about cancellation button not working and needing to contact support to cancel plan
  • Must complete your resume in a predetermined order
  • Automatically adds AI content to your resume that might not be the best fit
  • Some of the AI bullets include placeholder text when the information is already provided
  • The resume builder is a bit buggy and sometimes crashes (it crashed during testing)

5. My Perfect Resume

My Perfect Resume has a very similar resume builder to Zety. Reviews about being “scammed” aren’t unusual with My Perfect Resume. People find themselves getting hooked onto a monthly subscription after downloading their resume and completing their use of the product. Support often feels unreachable, as one review in March 2024 claimed, “I have sent 100 emails to explain [to] me why they have charged me they are not even replying to me.”

  • Color customizable
  • Can select templates with or without photos
  • Can select templates with one or two columns
  • Uses same resume builder tool as Zety
  • Too easy to make a 100% AI resume, which might get overlooked by recruiters
  • No resume grading or tailoring features
  • Expert recommended doesn’t appear to be tailored to your own experience
  • Asks to add languages to your resume, which isn’t a standard practice

As a popular job board, Indeed is known for helping people find jobs by showcasing popular jobs online for them to apply to. They’ve built a pretty simple resume builder that has an easy to use design, includes professional templates, and that people can use to apply to jobs. The interface is a little wonky to use, but usable. Some functionality like asking to include the years of experience for skills, just takes up valuable keyword space, and the color customizations include a weird selection of colors like browns, baby blue, and gold whereas they don’t have many feminine colors.

  • Easy to use
  • Professional resume templates
  • Connected to a popular job board
  • You need to fill in placeholder information making the design more rigid
  • Skills section asks for years of experience
  • Some designs have icons on them which take up too much space
  • Color customizations includes a strange selection of colors that lean more masculine

7. Chat GPT

Some people are turning to Chat GPT as their go to resume builder. And while you might be able to create some AI suggestions for your resume to help you improve the flow of your resume, you won’t be able to find any resume templates, job search tools, or specific features for job seekers that a more traditional resume builder would give you. If you’re looking for a quick check to bounce ideas off of or looking for resume synonyms to use instead, Chat GPT can be a great alternative to use to help you write your resume . It’s one of the best resume builders despite not being a traditional one.

  • Can help you brainstorm bullets for your resume
  • Easy to customize the resume format you want
  • Doesn’t come with resume templates
  • Some experience with prompting required to ensure you don’t get generic responses that’ll get overlooked by recruiters
  • Doesn’t come with a selection of job search tools, like job tracker, job tailored resumes, resume grade like a resume checker, doesn’t provide job search data based on your individualized experience
  • Can’t help you apply to more jobs faster
  • You won’t be able to store countless resume documents on it, you’ll only have access to the text
  • Doesn’t give you feedback on your resume length
  • Won’t tell you if you’re overusing buzzwords

Jobscan is one of the oldest resume builder products on the market. They’ve spent years building trust with job seekers. With limited AI functionality, Jobscan is slowly transforming into an outdated tool. Their designs are simple and professional. And their tool is pretty user-friendly. But there are some quirks and hiccups you’ll need to get over to play around with to ensure you create a resume design that looks its best.

  • Simple, professional designs
  • Allows you to skip certain sections if necessary
  • Has an ATS scan (though it has limitations)
  • Limited AI functionality, making it more outdated
  • Formatting uneven when not completing all sections
  • Skills asks for proficiency, which isn’t common or standard practice

Blog image

With a similar look and feel to Zety and My Perfect Resume, JobHero is another popular resume builder tool with AI functionality. Since it uses the same technology, it has more or less than same pros and cons as the other two tools, so while it’s not perfect, it’s still a common choice people turn to when building their resumes.

  • Color-customizable
  • Various templates to choose from
  • Reviews mention that JobHero “are not upfront about how they go about their billing.”
  • Can’t download resume until payment is made
  • No built in resume checker or grader in the resume builder
  • Too easy to make an 100% AI resume, which might not be helpful for job seekers looking to land interviews

When you create a resume, it's always a good idea to get a second opinion. Having a professional look at your resume before sending your job application can prevent you from making a detrimental mistake. The last thing you want is a typo-filled resume that costs you an interview.

If you don't trust your friends' or family members' proofreading ability, you can always turn to the online community of professional resume reviewers. Send your resume to one of these resume review sites and land your dream job.

1. ZipJob Resume Review

ZipJob Resume Review Tool

ZipJob provides you with an in-depth resume-checking tool that can benefit your job search. Start by uploading your resume to the site. Enter your email address and submit your resume.

In the next 48 hours, you'll get a reply from a resume expert who has fully reviewed your resume. All of ZipJob's experts are certified through the Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches, so you can expect a trustworthy review.

The reviewer will provide feedback on your resume's design, formatting, as well as presentation. ZipJob will also run your resume through the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that most employers use to filter out job candidates. To make this tool even better, it's completely free!

Jobscan Resume Review Site

In case you don't have the time to wait for a real-life reviewer to look at your resume, you can always use Jobscan's AI-powered tool. Jobscan analyzes your resume and shows you how you can improve it.

When you access Jobscan's tool, you'll notice two boxes: one for your resume, and one for a job description. After you paste (or upload) your resume, you'll have to paste the description of the job you're applying for. Hit  Scan  and Jobscan will present you with a detailed report in a matter of seconds.

Here, you'll see if your resume matches up to the job description you entered and whether it can make it past the ATS. Unfortunately, the free version of Jobscan limits the number of times you can use certain features (like the job match rate and keyword comparison tool), but it's still worth trying.

3. TopResume Resume Review

TopResume Resume Review Tool

Not only does TopResume offer paid resume writing services, but it also features a free resume review tool. After uploading your resume to the site, you can expect a reply within 48 hours.

TopResume's experts will then read through your resume, and highlight the portions that you need to improve on. In addition to getting constructive criticism on your resume's design, organization, mechanics, and writing, you'll also see how well your resume did in the ATS.

That said, it doesn't hurt to submit your resume to TopResume. If you're feeling frustrated with the number of errors that your resume wracks up, you might want to consider starting over and rebuilding your resume on a free resume maker .

4. Resume Worded

ResumeWorded Resume Review Tool

ResumeWorded is one of the best resume review sites on the web. Once you get past the hassle of signing up for the website, you can finally upload your resume. As soon as you upload your file, you'll see a page of changes that you should make to your resume.

ResumeWorded scores your resume from zero to 100, with 100 being the perfect resume. At the top of the page, you'll see how your resume ranks in four different categories: impact, brevity, style, and skills. Mousing over any of these areas displays helpful hints on how to improve your score in each category.

When you scroll down the page, you'll see the top three changes that you need to make to your resume. If you want to see even more specific advice, ResumeWorded provides you with a line-by-line analysis. Several helpful features are available with ResumeWorded's free plan, but you'll have to upgrade to the Pro version to get full access to the site's tools.

5. RezScore

RezScore Resume Review Site

For a quick reality check on your resume, upload it to RezScore's review service. This site will flat out tell you if your resume desperately needs help. It's not the most thorough of the tools listed here, but it definitely can give you an idea of where you've gone wrong.

Upon uploading your resume, RezScore will provide you with a very honest score of A through F. Click the Resume tab at the top of the screen to see how your resume ranks in brevity, depth, and impact. RezScore will also give you some pointers on what exactly needs fixing.

In case the site-generated review isn't specific enough for you, you can hit the Get a Human Review button. With this tool, you can submit your resume to the RezScore community and get some feedback from real people.

6. Ladders Resume Reviewer

Ladders Resume Review Site

Unlike the most popular job search engines , Ladders focuses solely on high-paying jobs---however, it does much more than track down six-figure opportunities.

Head to Ladders' free resume review tool, and you can upload your resume for an instant review. While you have to sign up for an account to get access to the review, the insight you receive is worth it.

On the resume review page, Ladders will let you know what you did well, and what you could make better. Any red block in the lefthand column signals something that you need to add or improve on. Click on these boxes to expand them, and you'll see a detailed explanation of how exactly you should fix your resume.

Ladders will provide you with a list of recommended jobs based on the contents of your resume, but you'll have to pay for a Premium account to get the most out of the site's job search tool.

Improving Your Resume With a Resume Review Site

Using one of these resume review sites will only improve your chances of landing a job. Having a second pair of eyes (or a computer) read your resume can help you recognize and fix your mistakes.

Need more help in creating a noteworthy resume? These top resume builder sites can help you create a resume that actually gets read.

The 5 Best Resume Builders of 2023 | Pros & Cons + Prices

One of the fastest ways to create a resume is by using a free resume builder. These days, the best resume builders are far more advanced than most people realize.

Modern resume builders can:

  • Write your bullet points for you (using AI)
  • Give you smart recommendations on improvements
  • And even check that your resume has the right keywords

If you’re wondering whether you should use a resume builder, consider this:

According to surveys, 47% of people say they struggle with showcasing their best experience on their resume. Even more surprisingly, most people ( 56% ) said they’ve seen very few resumes that really shined.

Like with many job search topics though, the problem isn’t a lack of choice, it’s that there are too many choices.

If you search for the “best free resume builders,” you’ll get dozens of lists and hundreds of choices. The problem is that most of these lists are written by the resume builder companies themselves.

If you look at Zety’s best free resume builders you’ll find that they recommend…Zety.

If you look at Resume Genius’ best free resume builders you’ll find that they recommend…you guessed it, Resume Genius.

As the saying goes, don’t go to a surgeon and ask if you need surgery.

So, which resume builder is actually best? And are they truly free?

At GHYC, we don’t have a resume builder. In fact, I often recommend people build their resume the old fashioned way, with a simple Google Docs template.

But there are times when a resume builder can be helpful and actually help you land your job faster.

In this post, we’ll explain:

  • Is it worth paying for a resume builder?
  • What should you look for in a resume builder?
  • What are the best resume builders currently available?
  • Which resume builder is right for your particular situation?

I've also managed to chat with some of the Founders of these resume building tools and secure discounts ( up to 20% off! ) on some of their premium features for our readers.

If you’d like to jump straight to the resume builder reviews, here are our recommendations for the 5 best free resume builders of 2023:

One way you can support our efforts, however, is by using the links in this post if you choose to use one of the resume builders. There is no additional cost to you, but it helps us keep our site free to all job seekers).

is it worth paying for a resume builder?

When you’re job seeking, every dollar counts. I understand this more than most. When I was job seeking, I ended up having $60 left in my bank account and actually became an Uber driver to make ends meet.

What most people don't know, however, is that most of the features on most resume builders are free to use.

Some resume builders do have some premium features that may or may not be worth it, depending on your particular situation.

So, before you go out and spend money on a resume builder, first we need to answer, “is it worth paying for a resume builder at all?”

There are 3 ways to approach job seeking, so let’s break down each one real quick here:

1. Write your resume yourself

The cheapest way to put together your resume is to do it yourself. While this may be a tempting option, it can have its drawbacks. The biggest drawback is that you might spend more time on formatting your resume than actually honing its content.

When I was applying to jobs, I fell for this trap. I literally spent dozens of hours fixing broken formatting. It was a constant distraction and made my job search much longer than it needed to be.

If you are on a super tight budget, however, there are ways to improve this. You can, for example, use ChatGPT to write your resume .

We also offer a 100% free resume course to help guide you . Pair that with these 2 ATS-friendly resume templates and you can most definitely write your resume on your own.

2. Use a resume builder

If you’re in need of a job sooner rather than later, using a resume builder can be a great shortcut. Not only will a resume builder save you hours on formatting, but it will also make sure your resume is compatible with applicant tracking systems .

In addition, most of the resume builders on this list also offer writing suggestions and even done-for-you bullet points using AI (my how times have changed!).

And, best of all, a lot of the free resume builders don’t charge you anything until you actually want to download the resume. The price points are also very reasonable, from just $3 to $9 depending on which option you choose. We’ve also included a resume builder on the list that is 100% free (even to download your resume too!).

3. Hire a professional resume writer

This last option is best if you’re trying to make a bigger career move, such as earning a promotion or making a career pivot. In that case, hiring a professional resume writer may be very worthwhile. We have a list of some of the best resume writers (and their prices) here.

So, is it worth paying for a resume builder?

In most cases, yes.

The three reasons I personally like using a resume builder are:

1. Use a resume builder to give you ideas for your resume.

Many resume builders now offer AI writing suggestions that are super helpful. You’ll still need to do some work to refine the suggestions, but a resume builder can help accelerate your resume writing process a lot.

2. Use a resume builder to customize your resume quickly.

Instead of sending off one version of your resume and waiting to hear back, a resume builder allows you to try different formats quickly. With the recommended resume makers below, you can literally build 5 different resumes in minutes instead of hours.

3. Use a resume builder to check that your resume is ATS-friendly

If you’re applying to competitive jobs, there's a chance that recruiters are searching within their applicant tracking systems using keywords. To make sure your resume shows up in these searches, you can use a resume builders built-in resume checker. This is a great add-on feature to have as insurance.

what to look for in a free resume builder

What To Look For In A Resume Builder

There are a LOT of factors that go into choosing the right resume builder. In our opinion, some factors are far more important than others.

When we evaluated these top resume builders, we focused on:

Speed & Ease of Use

The entire point of a resume builder is that it makes your life easier. After all, you don’t want to spend weeks tweaking and messing around with your resume. The #1 job of a resume builder, in our opinion, is to remove the headaches of building a resume so that you can concentrate on the actual content of your resume.

Encourage Best Practices

We disqualified a lot of resume builder websites because they offered a lot of templates that didn’t follow resume best practices. Many of these templates encouraged notoriously bad resume mistakes like adding graphics, self-scoring your skills, and other issues that turn off both recruiters and applicant tracking systems.

Price & Value

When you’re in a job search, the last thing you want is to be nickel and dimed constantly. We don’t mind if a resume builder charges a reasonable price, but we disqualified resume builder websites that kept charging you over and over again in sneaky ways. All of the resume builders on this list are completely free to use and only charge a few dollars to export your resume when you’re ready.

If you want to look at resume makers that didn’t make this list, that’s totally fine. We just recommend you stay away from:

  • Resume makers that provide thousands of templates. When it comes to templates, the simpler, the better.
  • Resume makers that don’t use ATS-friendly resume templates . This includes templates with lots of graphics or strange formatting.
  • Resume makers that use templates that will be off putting to recruiters. This includes self-rating systems and resume fonts that aren’t easily readable.

Alright, so now that we’ve covered the criteria for the list, let’s get into the 5 best free resume builders we recommend:

best resume builders my perfect resume

Best All Around Resume Builder | My Perfect Resume

One of the resume builders that surprised us the most was My Perfect Resume. Out of all the free resume builders we tested, this one had the best balance of features.

While My Perfect Resume didn’t score the “best” in any one category, it scored highly pretty much across all categories. It was pretty easy to use, it had excellent templates to choose from, and it’s AI recommendations were top notch.

My Perfect Resume was founded in 2013 and has since helped create over 43 million resumes.

They also have 4.6/5 stars on Trust Pilot with a solid 6,858 reviews .

What We Love About My Perfect Resume

My Perfect Resume made our best resume builder list because it checks off a lot of boxes really well. Some of the best features of My Perfect Resume were…

Great Onboarding Process

By far my favorite feature when using My Perfect Resume is how the great step-by-step nature of the platform.

While most resume makers will have you input your data in the same way, My Perfect Resume took this approach to the next level.

A unique step that My Perfect Resume had was that it first asks you how many years of experience you have:

my perfect resume best resume builder

Based on this, it will actively suggest resume templates that will best fit your years of experience. I can’t tell you how many times in our resume workshops, I’m asked, “will this resume template work for me? I have X years of experience.”

I played around with different inputs for the number of years and I have to say they’ve done a great job with this.

The templates My Perfect Resume chose for me were super clean and worked great for what I needed.

As a bonus, the platform also let you preview the color of your template before you chose it. This was really nice in helping me visualize what my resume would end up looking like before I choose a template:

Combinational And Functional Resume Templates

Depending on your job search goals, this feature could be the one that sells you on My Perfect Resume over other resume builders.

My Perfect Resume offers both “Combinational resumes” and “Functional resumes.” For those who aren’t familiar with these, let me explain:

When to Choose a Combinational Resume Template

A combinational resume template is one that creates two distinct focus areas:

  • Your skills
  • Your experience

A combinational resume will allow a recruiter to focus on both of these areas, since it breaks both of them up into separate sections.

A combinational resume is particularly useful:

  • If you’re switching from one career field to another
  • If you’re trying to move up in seniority in your current field
  • If you’re returning to the job market after a hiatus

The combinational resume helps you with all 3 of these scenarios by focusing on your transferrable skills rather than just your work history.

combinational resume example

When to Choose a Functional Resume Templates

A functional resume template is one that focuses solely on your skills and not on your work experience.

A functional resume template is best:

  • If you’re a first-time job seeker or don’t have much experience
  • If you’re shifting to a new career
  • If you have large employment gaps

The functional resume template helps with all 3 of these situations by ignoring the traditional “work experience” section and replacing it with “Qualifications” and “Skills” section.

functional resume example

It should be noted that other resume builders do also offer combinational and functional resume templates. However, My Perfect Resume has a special selection of these templates and explains when you should use them, which is quite helpful.

Very Good AI Recommendations

Beyond the resume templates, I found that My Perfect Resume had really strong AI suggestions. These suggestions weren’t necessarily the best out of all the resume builders, but they were definitely better than most.

As you can see, not only does My Perfect Resume provide well-written AI suggestions, but it also gives you the option to add numbers to each suggestion.

As I was building my resume, the AI suggestions gave me great ideas for numbers I could include, which I never would have thought of on my own.

resume recommendations

If you want help figuring out how to write numbers in your resume, Resume Writing Expert, Gillian Kelly, made this great video explaining how to do so:

Resume Best Practices

In addition to writing suggestions, the platform also did a great job of following some resume best practices.

These included:

  • Leaving your graduation date off if it’s been more than 10 years
  • Keeping your resume brief (we recommend 400–600 words for 1–15 years of experience)
  • Using clean, uncomplicated resume templates

should you include a graduation year on your resume

A lot of the best practices that we teach in our free job-winning resume course were already incorporated into My Perfect Resume, which put a big smile on our faces.

Resume Scoring

Lastly, one of the best add-ons that My Perfect Resume offers is a resume scoring feature. After you’ve built your resume, the platform will give you a score in your dashboard.

Resume scoring tool

This score is based on how complete your resume is. The platform will show you which sections you’re missing and how you can improve your resume score.

As someone who has directly worked on our own Resume Grader, I have to say that the My Perfect Resume scoring system was very accurate compared to our own results.

Where My Perfect Resume Isn’t Perfect

While My Perfect Resume is very good, it isn’t quite perfect in some aspects. There were two areas where we felt My Perfect Resume was lacking:

One area that could use improvement is the resume editor once you’ve built your resume. While the resume editor allowed you to change your resume template, color, and layout, it was a bit hard to use.

As you hover your mouse over the templates, you can see a preview of what each one looks like, but it was hard to tell which template is which.

In addition, some of the templates had an option to change the font, while others didn’t. Some of the templates seemed to make the font way too small and some fonts weren’t easy to read.

As we’ve talked about before, choosing a good resume font is super important because a recruiter will only spend 10–30 seconds looking at your resume. TK

It felt like the editor could lead some job seekers astray by letting them choose templates with fonts that are way too small or difficult to read.

The second area that was disappointing were some of the additional features such as the Cover Letter generator and Job Matcher.

The cover letter tool was very strange to use. It asked you to choose your top 3 job skills, but the options it offered were wildly off from the job title I added.

It also asked you to choose your top 3 qualities:

resume skills

Funny enough, the cover letter it generated based on this information was exactly the kind of cover letter I recommend you do not use .

Here is the cover letter My Perfect Resume generated for me:

bad cover letter example

In my testing, this kind of cover letter isn’t useful at all. You can see a side-by-side comparison between a bad cover letter and our proven cover letter template here .

If you decide to go with My Perfect Resume, I don’t recommend using the cover letter feature or the resume summary feature as both use a lot of fluff words throughout.

Pros and Cons of My Perfect Resume

  • Excellent resume templates
  • Chooses templates based on your experience
  • Has combinational and functional templates section
  • Great AI writing suggestions
  • Follows resume best practices very well
  • Accurate resume scoring
  • Easy color customization
  • Resume editor is a bit difficult to use
  • Some templates have difficult to read fonts
  • Cover letter generator isn’t very good
  • Resume summary generator isn’t very good
  • 14-day trial goes up in price

Best User Friendly Resume Builder | Resume.io

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a resume builder is its ease of use. After all, a good resume builder is supposed to save you time over just using a word doc.

Out of the dozens of resume builders we tested, Resume.io by far stood out as the easiest to use. In fact, I was able to recreate my full resume in less than 8 minutes with all the sections I needed.

It’s no surprise that Resume.io is so well thought out either. The company was founded back in 2012. It’s based out of the Netherlands and you can definitely feel that stereotypical Scandinavian thoughtfulness in this great resume builder.

Resume.io also has 4.7/5 stars on trust pilot with an amazing 43,149 reviews .

👉 Price: Free to build. 7-Day Trial for $4.70 ($25/month after that)

👉 Best Deal: $44 for 3 months (less than $7.50/month)

try resume.io for free

What We Love About Resume.io

Where Resume.io really shines is in how user-friendly every aspect of the product is. Not only is it quick to pick up, but it also lets you build a complete resume faster than most other resume builders out there.

Here are our favorite features about Resume.io:

Free Resume Builder Features

Unlike many other resume builders, Resume.io gives you access to a lot of features for free.

Some of those free resume builder features include:

  • Full access to their resume template library
  • It’s free to download a .txt file of the resume you build so you can copy it into your own template if you want
  • Free access to their AI suggestions
  • Free Cover Letter templates you can download for free
  • Free shareable link of your resume

Basically, if you were really on a tight budget, you could use Resume.io completely free and get a lot of value from it.

The only time you’ll need to pay is if you want to download a PDF of your resume straight from the platform. This is highly convenient, but like we mentioned above, you could also just download the .txt file for free and then recreate the resume in either a Word doc or Google doc.

AI Suggestions As You Build

One of my favorite features of Resume.io is how they integrated AI suggestions into the platform.

For example, as you fill out your work experience, the AI will offer suggestions for bullet points based on the job title you’re writing about.

best resume builder features resume.io

As you can see, some of these suggestions were a little strange, like how it suggested, “Served as a helpful assistant to all office staff,” for a Content Marketing role.

But, other suggestions were spot on. Such as, “Analyzed past marketing initiatives and revamped the company’s marketing efforts to keep readers engaged.”

Overall, the AI for Resume.io was better than some of the other resume builders on this list, but it still required some finessing.

One of the best AI features of Resume.io, however, was the suggestions it generated for my skills section. As you can see in the video below, when I clicked on skills, it continued to provide more suggestions.

This feature alone makes Resume.io worth it, since this can greatly help you with improving your results with applicant tracking systems (ATS) .

Really Fast Customization

Another feature that makes Resume.io one of the best free resume builders available today is how easy it is to customize.

Beyond the usual work experience and skills sections, Resume.io allows you to add several additional sections to your resume. You can add courses, languages, internships, references, hobbies, and even a custom section to your resume.

resume.io example

The other customization feature that I really liked was how easy it is to change my template even after I’ve entered my info.

With just a couple of clicks, I could go from using the London resume template to the Amsterdam resume template.

In our resume classes, I’ve seen so many people spend the majority of their time futzing with the design of their resume instead of with the actual content, so this feature is super useful.

Another important thing this feature lets you do is A/B test different resume templates.

Imagine you’re applying to jobs for 3 months and getting no replies. With the click of a button, you can change your resume template and try out a completely different look.

As often explain in our resume workshops, small things like having the right resume color and good resume fonts can make a big difference when applying to jobs.

Where Resume.io Isn’t Ideal

From what I’ve seen, there are only two real concerns to look out for with Resume.io.

The first thing to look out for are some of the more creative templates available in the platform. I recommend staying away from the “creative” category of templates since they may not be recruiter or ATS-friendly .

This is easily avoidable though, since they have 3 other categories available: simple, professional, and modern.

The other place to look out for is with the pricing model. Resume.io offers great pricing options:

best resume builder resume.io pricing

The place where a lot of people get confused though is with the 7-day trial. The trial costs only $4, which is fantastic value. After the 7 days, however, the price goes up to $24 per month.

As long as you’re aware of this change, it’s not a big deal, but good to know before you buy.

If you do decide to try Resume.io, I recommend just springing for the $44 for 6 months option just so you don’t have to worry about your billing changing.

Pros and Cons of Resume.io

  • Free cover letter builder
  • Free use of their resume templates
  • Free AI suggestions
  • Free .txt file downloads
  • Super useful skills suggestions
  • Instantly check keywords
  • Instantly change templates
  • Flat fee for unlimited use for 6 months or 12 months
  • Paid version includes free critique by an HR expert
  • 4.7/5 stars on Trust Pilot from 43,140+ reviews
  • Over 24 million resumes built by over 15 million users
  • AI suggestions can be hit or miss
  • Some templates may not be recruiter or ATS-friendly
  • 7-Day trial goes up in price steeply

best free resume builders teal

Best Innovative Resume Builder | Teal

As we were testing resume builders, a pattern emerged that was hard to ignore: most resume builders are very isolated from the job search process.

Well, then we discovered Teal.

Teal is a company that is trying to take a wholistic approach to job searching. Instead of just focusing on your standard application documents (resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, etc), Teal wants to be the hub for your entire job search journey.

Not only is Teal a great resume builder, but it also helps you organize your job search, research job openings, and keep you focused during your journey.

Founded in 2019, Teal is very new to the resume builder category. But, because it’s so new, it offers a very fresh approach that is worth considering.

In addition, it should be noted that Teal is the only free resume builder on this list that lets you download your resume for free as well.

👉 Price: Free to build & download your resume ($9/week for premium features)

👉 Best deal: $79 for 3 months of Premium

teal resume free trial

Teal also has great customer service and some really nice tutorials. Here is a video that the CEO of Teal, David Fano, sent to me to show me the platform:

Even though Teal is a relatively new resume builder, they already have great reviews for their tools.

They have an incredible 5/5 stars on Google reviews with over 412 reviews already!

teal resume builder reviews

What We Love About Teal

Where Teal really shines is in all the job search support features it offers in addition to its free resume builder. Here are the features that should make you consider choosing Teal as your resume builder…

Super Useful Job Tracker

I’ll talk about the actual resume maker function of Teal in just a moment. Where Teal really stands out from every other resume builder, however, is in the job search tools it has built right into the platform.

Teal markets itself as your “personal career development platform,” and this idea is carried out throughout the platform incredibly well.

One of the main pain points of searching for a job is the hundreds of micro activities you need to do. I’m sure we’ve all asked questions like:

“How many job applications should I be sending out?”
“What kind of positions should I apply for?”
“Wait… did I already apply to this position?”

Teal solves a lot of these problems through their great job tracker tool.

Right when you jump into the resume maker platform, Teal begins with your end goal in mind. First, it asks you what your career goal is:

best resume builder teal asks you career questions

After you've established your goal, Teal will have you download their super slick job tracker tool.

The job tracker works through a Google chrome extension you can download for free from Teal’s website.

Once you have the extension downloaded, you can save jobs to your Teal job tracker with just one click:

teal resume builder chrome extension

A feature that I personally loved is that I could also add an “excitement” rating to each job. This is brilliant because it lets me organize which jobs I dedicate my attention to. I can dedicate the most time to the jobs I am most excited about while still having others as backups.

teal is one of the best resume builders

Helpful Process Organizer

The average job search takes anywhere between 3–6 months, depending on the role you’re after. This is why it’s super important to keep track of your job search as you go along.

Not only is this important for being efficient with your job search, but it’s also vital to maintaining your mental health through what can be a difficult journey.

Teal has some really nice job tracker tools that can help you with this.

best job tracker tools

Not only does Teal let you add jobs to a central database, but it also lets you organize what stage you’re in with each company.

This functions almost like an applicant tracking system , but for job seekers instead of job posters.

teal job tracker tools

I can’t stress enough how helpful this is to maintaining your morale during a long job search. I’ve written about how to manage your job applications in the past, and I wish that I had a tool like Teal when I was on my long job search back then.

Fast, Simple Resume Builder That’s Truly Free

My first “wow” moment with Teal was when I went into the platform to build my resume.

Most resume makers offer an option to import a resume you’ve already written. Where Teal takes this to another level is that (in addition to this feature) it also lets you create a resume directly from your LinkedIn profile.

free job tracker

I personally keep my LinkedIn profile a lot more up to date than my resume, so this was a great way to jump start my resume building.

Once I imported my resume information, Teal automatically populated my resume with my bullet points, which I could toggle on/off super easily. Here’s what it looked like:

best free resume makers

A bonus feature was that it also grabbed my “certifications” and “skills” sections from LinkedIn. This meant that all my LinkedIn Learning courses were now part of my resume, which I had never thought to add before.

best free resume makers tealHQ

One of the most surprising things when I finished my resume was when I clicked “Download PDF.”

For all the other resume builders on this list, when you try to download your resume you’ll be blocked by a paywall.

Teal is different.

Teal truly lets you build and download your resume 100% free. That makes Teal the only fully free resume builder on this entire list.

Interactive Achievements Assistant

One area where Teal differs from the rest of the resume makers on this list is in its bullet point builder.

While the other resume makers offer fully written bullet points generated by AI, Teal takes a bit of a more hands-on approach.

Instead of generating bullet points for you, Teal involves you in the process by letting you construct your bullet points in a very systematic way.

resume builder for bullet points

As you can see, the bullet point creator asks you a series of questions to help you build the best bullet points.

As someone who likes to have more control of their writing process, this feature was actually quite refreshing and it helped me quite a bit.

free resume builder tealHQ

Resume Optimization

Other features that were particularly helpful were the keyword finder and resume checker.

The keyword finder lets you input a job description into the platform, and then Teal will automatically find the target keywords for you. This lets you quickly add keywords to your resume that are both recruiter and ATS-friendly.

(I used to do this process manually, so it’s great that I can now outsource this task to Teal.)

The other feature that was particularly helpful was the resume checker. I personally worked on our Resume Grader at GHYC, so I was particularly keen to see if the Teal resume checker was accurate.

I found that the resume checker was good at certain tasks, but failed at others.

The area that it was really helpful in was checking if you have all your resume sections following best practices.

Teal will check things like your:

  • Resume completeness
  • Resume bullet point length
  • Resume metrics

I was really impressed that the resume checker could spot if I was missing metrics in my bullet points or that my bullet points were too long, for example.

free bullet point generator tealHQ

Where Teal Wasn’t Ideal

Teal is definitely the most innovative resume platform we tested. But, with this innovation come a few issues.

For example, Teal’s resume checker was accurate for the most part. But, when I tried using the resume matching feature, it scored my resume as a 1% match for my target role.

Keep in mind, this resume was based on a LinkedIn profile that had already landed me several interviews for that very same role.

free resume makers

The other area that was a little lacking were the resume templates. To be clear, Teal has very well optimized resume templates, the problem is that it has very few of them.

There are currently only 4 resume templates in the platform. While each of these templates were well done, it is a little bit limiting to the type of resume you can build.

In particular, it would be nice to have a two column template for those who would like to present their information in a different way.

There were also only 7 accent colors to choose from, so that felt a bit limiting as well.

Pros and Cons of Teal

  • Helps you organize your entire job search
  • Very useful Google Chrome Extension
  • Keeps you on track with weekly goals
  • Can import your LinkedIn profile and your resume
  • Helpful bullet point builder
  • Resume templates are ATS-friendly
  • Let’s you download your resume for free
  • Resume checker gives good suggestions
  • Only has 4 resume templates
  • Only has 7 resume colors
  • Resume checker was hit or miss sometimes

Rezi best guided resume builder

Best Smart Resume Builder | Rezi

One of the most delightful resume builders we tested was Rezi. What was most surprising about Rezi was that it teaches you the best practices of resume writing while you’re using it.

Rezi is unique in that it has small video explanations embedded directly in the builder with an instructor who shares best practices for each section. In addition, we liked that it was easy to use, had excellent resume templates, and it’s one of the few resume builders that’s truly free.

Rezi was founded in 2015 and is based out of Seoul, South Korea. They have 4.2/5 stars on Trust Pilot out of 78 reviews.

What We Love About Rezi

Rezi made our best resume builder list because it not only streamlines your resume building, but actually shows you best practices in the process. Some of the best features of Rezi were…

Easy Resume Building + Resume Examples

By far my favorite feature when using Rezi was how the platform guides you through the building of your resume.

The process starts with Rezi’s great library of templates. This saved me SO much time.

I simply searched for a “Sr. Content Marketing Manager” template (my target role). This is a pretty specific job title to begin with, but Rezi had a fully written resume example to start with.

build your life resume review

I also liked that Rezi had a lot of other options with how you could start. If you already have a resume you’re working from, you can import it into the platform instead. Or, you could even start with just your LinkedIn profile.

build your life resume review

Great Resume Targeting

The other feature that was really impressive was how detailed you can get with your targeting. As I’ve written about before , having a targeted resume will dramatically increase your interview rate.

Rezi stood out in that regard because it lets you target by both role AND seniority .

build your life resume review

This is particularly helpful if you’re trying to make a jump to a higher level role or if you're trying to figure out how to make a career pivot .

They even have a “Target your resume” toggle that lets you input the exact job description or company you’re trying to go after.

If you’ve watched my free resume course , you’ll remember that I’m a big proponent of having a multi-resume strategy (using a different resume for every job you apply to).

Back when I was applying to jobs, I created different resumes for every job I applied to manually 🤦‍♂️

After seeing Rezi (and some of the other resume builders on this list) now I’m kicking myself for the hours I wasted doing this manually.

Video Tutorials & Best Practices

One of the biggest reasons we didn’t choose some resume builders for this list is because they encouraged bad practices.

For example, some of the AI resume builders we tested would create long-winded summaries, “responsible for” bullet points, and even include spelling mistakes!

This is where Rezi stood out from the rest.

As you move through each section of the builder, Rezi includes a video in the top corner with someone explaining the best way to write that particular section.

rezi video lessons

I wanted to be critical of this feature, after all, our resume course is all about sharing these best practices. But to my surprise the tips they shared were actually spot on.

For example, in the bullet point module they teach you the “What, Why, How” method for writing bullet points, which is super useful!

If you’ve been applying to jobs for awhile now and you’re not sure why you’re not getting interviews, I highly recommend just going through the Rezi videos because they’re very helpful.

( Shameless plug alert: you can also get our free resume course which will teach you even more job-winning optimizations).

Smart Optimizations

Speaking of optimizations, during my testing Rezi did a very good job of making suggestions for ways to improve my resume.

For example, has this really great audit tool to help you quickly spot your mistakes.

rezi resume analysis

What I really like about this tool, however, is that it also shows you what you’re doing well, which makes you feel accomplished as you’re building your resume.

In terms of the skills section, Rezi was unique in that it had multiple categories of skills you can add. This feature can be pretty useful to figure out your resume keywords .

resume skills

The builder also included a “Projects” section by default. This can be particularly useful if you have an eclectic work experience because it lets you highlight your best experience all in one section.

Rezi Has Great Analytics

While pretty much all resume builders these days have an analytics feature, Rezi stood out with how well organized theirs is.

Not only does the platform give you a score on your resume, but it also breaks down that score across multiple factors so you know exactly what you need to improve.

In addition, I really appreciated that I could click on each improvement and it would take me directly to that section so I could fix whatever was wrong.

Rezi Is Truly Free

A couple of freebies and extras worth mentioning about Rezi it’s one of the few truly free resume builders.

While most resume builders let you build for free, they usually charge you once you want to download your resume.

Rezi doesn’t bait and switch you like that.

With Rezi’s free plan you can actually download your resume up to 3 times at no cost.

Another nice extra is that they have a resume review service where a real person can review your resume to make sure everything is as it should be.

If you’re on the Pro plan (which I recommend) a resume review is included free of charge. I f you’re on the free plan, the resume review only costs $8.

Where Rezi Wasn’t Ideal

Overall Rezi was a very solid resume builder, but there were certain features I recommend skipping.

The first is the aforementioned skills tool. Most of the skills it suggested were very helpful, BUT, there were some skills suggestions that were not on target.

For example, the platform suggested “Trafficking” as a keyword for a Content Marketing role 😆

This isn’t a huge deal, but definitely be careful when you’re adding skills to make sure they are indeed what you want to add.

Another place where Rezi falls short is with its Cover Letter Generator. The cover letter template that Rezi uses is exactly the type of cover letter that we don’t recommend.

If you are going to use a cover letter, I recommend grabbing our more modern cover letter template which looks like this:

best cover letter template

You can get this template for free (along with video instructions on how to fill it out) in our 15-Minute Cover Letter Course.

Lastly, Rezi has an option to add a profile picture, which I don’t recommend using. Some companies may disqualify you if you have a profile picture (because they’re afraid of being sued for discrimination), so it’s best to not use this feature.

Pros and Cons of Rezi

  • Video tutorials with best practices
  • Multiple ways to start a resume
  • Can target by role and seniority
  • Very easy to build & good UI
  • Great analytics & suggestions
  • Includes excellent resume examples
  • Includes projects section
  • Improvements are easy to understand
  • Can get feedback from a resume expert
  • Includes 3 resume downloads for free
  • 4.2/5 stars on Trust Pilot
  • Skills suggestions can be hit or miss
  • Cover letter generator isn’t very useful

Another thing that we loved about Ideal Resume is the level of customer care they provide. When I reached out to Ideal Resume, their CEO, Wesley Brach , personally replied to my message within 20 minutes with this great 4-minute walkthrough video:

What We Love About Ideal Resume

Ideal Resume has 3 resume building tools, 2 resume scanning tools, and bunch of extras that can help you with everything from your cover letter to your interview skills.

Let’s break down the resume generator tools first:

Resume Bullet Point Generator

The first tool Ideal Resume offers is an AI bullet point generator. What I love about this generator is how simple it is to use. To use it, you simply:

  • Select bullet point generator
  • Select to input either a “job title” or “job title + skills”
  • Select the role you’d like it to focus on

best resume builder ideal resume

Ideal Resume will then generate 3 versions of bullet points that you can choose from. As you can see, it gives you a good amount of variety from full sentences to simple skills lists.

You can choose which ones you like the most and then simply copy and paste them into your resume whether that be in a Word doc or Google Docs.

Even though I’ve written hundreds of resumes at this point, I found this tool to be super helpful in generating ideas for the accomplishments I could focus on.

They also have a resume accomplishments generator. This works very similarly to the bullet point generator, except it includes metrics too.

Resume Summary Generator

As we’ve discussed before, a great resume summary can really make your resume stand out from other candidates. Resume summaries are, however, notoriously difficult to write.

Ideal Resume generates a resume summary through the exact same process with just 3 simple inputs from you.

best resume builders of 2023 ideal resume

Now, don’t expect that these resume summaries will be perfect, but it’s nice to have something to work with as a starting point.

To learn how to modify these resume summaries, I recommend reading our full resume summary guide here.

As a resume builder, Ideal Resume has pretty good results (although not the best). Where Ideal Resume really shines though, is that it includes several other tools at no additional cost.

In addition to being a great resume builder, Ideal Resume also offers:

Resume Scanner with Courses

All of the best resume builders we've recommened above have a resume scanning tool of some kind. What makes Ideal Resume unique, is that it also offers a unique way of fixing the gaps in your resume: skills courses.

When you use the resume scanner, it will ask you for both your resume and the target role you're applying for. When I uploaded my resume to the platform, here's what my results looked like:

resume scanner for ats

As you can see, the scanner has highlighted that my resume is pretty strong. But, there are places where my resume could use some improvement, particularly in my skills section.

When you click on the skills button, Ideal Resume will show you which skills you're missing from your resume that the job description calls for:

ideal resume skills

What's really unique about Ideal Resume compared to other the other best free resume builders is that it gives you suggested online courses to fill in your skills gaps.

When you click on a skill, Ideal Resume will send you to Udemy where you can take courses to improve your skills. As someone who is an avid fan of online learning, this was a great feature to see!

LinkedIn Summary Builder

One of the most common questions I get asked on LinkedIn is, “how do I write a great LinkedIn summary like yours?”

According to studies, a whopping 87% of recruiters find LinkedIn to be the most useful for vetting candidates.

The trouble is that writing a great LinkedIn summary can be super difficult (especially if you’re not a natural writer). Well, Ideal Resume has you covered in this respect too with an AI LinkedIn summary builder:

resume builder for linkedin summary

The LinkedIn summary builder is included at no additional cost. The results aren’t 100% done-for-you, but they will get you started quite well. I recommend generating 5–6 LinkedIn summaries with it and then taking the best parts from each one that you like.

Cover Letter Generator

Ideal Resume also has an AI cover letter generator that’s quite good actually. This generator can use the actual job description of the position you’re applying for.

cover letter generator

I plugged in a job description for a Content Specialist at Tesla, and here’s what it generated as my cover letter:

cover letter generator

As you can see, you’ll need to do some light editing to the cover letter. Instead of, “I have 1–3 years experience,” you would need to say, “I have 3 years experience,” for example.

The AI won’t build a ready-to-send cover letter for you, but it does help you get started. If you want to know how to write a great cover letter that will increase your interview rate by up to 30%, you can also try our free 15-Minute Cover Letter Course.

Other Free Job Search Tools

As though that weren’t enough help, Ideal Resume also just added several tools to help you with your interview process too. You can now use their AI generator to get practice interview questions, create an elevator pitch, and even write a thank you note.

cover letter generator

Where Ideal Resume Isn’t Ideal

As you can see, Ideal Resume checks off a lot of boxes. It offers some great ideas for your resume bullet points, accomplishments, and resume summary. Not to mention all of the extra features it offers for no additional cost.

The area where Ideal Resume lacks some finesse is in the quality of the generated text. It's nice that it gives you 3 options each time it generates ideas, but you will still need to fine tune the suggestions it gives you.

Nonetheless, we’re sure that with time that this promising company will improve their AI resume builder to take these kinds of things into account.

Pros and Cons of Ideal Resume

  • Let’s you build your resume in Word or Google Docs
  • Has multiple resume generator tools
  • Has LinkedIn generator tools (included at no additional charge)
  • Has Interview practice tools (included at no additional charge)
  • Let’s you test your resume for ATS compatibility
  • Has great customer service
  • Super easy to use
  • Pay as you go model TK
  • Bullet point generator doesn’t use strong verbs
  • AI generation tools need your help to fine tune language
  • No templates included

Overall if you’re looking to have maximum control of your resume, but you want a little writing help, Ideal Resume is a great choice.

Build Your Life Resume, Jesse Itzler Course Review

April 9, 2019 by Shiv Aiyar

build your life resume review

Jesse Itzler developed Build Your Life Resume to help people stuck in the 9 to 5 grind to find more meaning with their lives.

Basically, the program builds a “life resume” which is kind of like a normal resume except it’s filled out with meaning accomplishments that are actually important to the one accomplishing them.

These accomplishments are suppose to be things that will help said person find success in their personal lives, business and other professional settings.

Jesse wants every person out there to break free from the chains of society. The majority of people are guilty of falling into society’s trap.

Wake up. Go to work. Get home at night. Eat. Go to bed. Rinse and repeat.

For 50 damn years.

This is society’s norm and Jesse doesn’t want that to happen to everyone. He wants to make sure you live a fulfilling life, doing something that truly makes you happy.

And once you find that thing that truly makes you happy then you can start to monetize it.

When you stop focusing so heavily on your professional life and instead focus on your purpose, only then will you be truly happy.

Jesse has a pretty exciting story himself about the resume he’s working on building in his own life.

Who’s Jesse Itzler?

Believe it or not, Jesse was an ex rapper and he’s now a very successful entrepreneur.

In the past he was a speaker on Ted Talk, he’s spoken internationally as well, he’s an adventurer and a very respected business person.

His wife, Sara Blakely, is actually the founder of her own company Spanx. They have four kids together.

Jesse has also become a vegan.

On top of those accomplishments he’s also a best selling author. He wrote “Living with a Seal” which is a book about how he had a former navy seal stay in his home to personally train him.

It’s a true story by the way.

Everything that he does is done for increasing his bank account, building his resume or adding some skills that will help him grow as a father, husband or business person.

And on top of all that he has founded a handful of multi-million dollar companies.

He was the co-founder of Marquis Jets before him and his business partner eventually sold it to Berkshire Hathaway. It’s now know as Berkshire Hathaway/NetJets.

He also co-founded Zico Coconut. A water product that he and his partner eventually sold to Coca-Cola.

Ya think this guy knows how to build a profitable business yet?

I mean come on.

Build Your Life Resume Course Summy

build your life resume review

Build Your Life Resume is an eight week long course that Jesse designed to help others hit goals and live their life to the fullest. These goals include personal, relationship and business.

So what should you expect to get out of this thing?

  • applicable advice and problem-solving from Jesse
  • all tools needed to break free of the chains/mindsets that have kept you from hitting goals
  • work closely with Jesse and people he learned from
  • eight weeks full of insights, tips and formulas/plans

In the first week of the program, Jesse helps students build their life resume. Basically you’ll be creating an outline of what you can expect over the next eight weeks and helps you to get the most out of his training.

Week 2 is all about developing the “won’t stop mentality.” Jesse credits this mentality for all of his achievements to this point in his life.

For the next few weeks Jesse focuses on helping students to grow their influence and business. On top of that you continue to build the winning mindset as well as tuning your mind and body to stay energized.

In week 6,7 and 8 the students begin to use practical solutions to start breaking the norm in their lives. The idea is for them to get a good look at how far they’ve come since day 1 and understand what the next steps are to continue to get the most out of what they’ve learned.

Jesse is very hands on with the coaching program. He makes himself available to students whether it be in the exclusive FB group, IG or YouTube.

The students can stay in touch and motivate each other through mailing address.

I think Jesse offers something really cool here and I just really like the guy. Seems like a really cool dude.

But now it’s up to you, are you ready to build the life resume that will leave you feeling fulfilled?

The Right Business For A 6 Figure Income In 2019

IMO Build Your Life Resume is a great course, it motivates to crush life goals and reach the potential that we have as human beings.

But in order to accomplish it you need time. It takes time.

We don’t have much time, we need to work.

How do we work less so we have more time for ourselves?

Residual/passive income.

I was able to do exactly then. I began to learn the high income skill of local lead generation to start making serious money online.

I’ll go to my grave saying that this is the best online business opportunity in 2019. It allowed me to crush six figures in very short order.

I was able to leave my 9 to 5 in just a few short months.

Below you can check out one of the sites I built back around the same time I left my job. It’s a pool site that’s been bringing in $650/mo for me on auto-pilot.

Listen, this business has completely changed my life. My friends and family don’t even look at me the same anymore.

I went from struggling to make $30k/year at my job, to a six figure salary in just over 6 months. And it’s passive.

I quit my 9 to 5. I’m my own boss. I make my schedule.

I take vacations when I want, where I want.

I can talk all day about what this business has done for me but let’s talk about what it can do for you. The cool thing is that we teach others to do the exact same thing.

If you’re interested in learning more about it, just click here .

You can learn more about how to use this skill to generate free web traffic and rent the local leads out to small business owners.

Writing Your Life Résumé

build your life resume review

I've spoken before about how HR departments cracked the meaning of life and success  by optimizing professional growth within their organizations. In there, I linked to the  life résumé template  for folks to create their own. Today, I'd like to talk a little bit about when, how, and why you should create your own "life résumé" to plan your own success.

Let's start with why: why should you create a life résumé? Three use cases:

  • You want to plan out everything that you need to do to be successful in your life
  • You want to build belief in what you have done that makes you capable of future success
  • You want to identify new directions and where to go from here

In the first case, you are working back from your desired outcome—in résumé parlance, an Objective—to the experiences you need to have to work up from it. Most résumés are in reverse-chronological order, so it's a nice way to work back from where you want to be in 5, 10, 20, or 30 years and trace back experiences to where you are now. However, you can work from where you are up to the outcome—either way works.

In the second case, you take your ultimate goal or objective and then document the experiences that you have already had that make you qualified and capable of achieving your goal (similar to what a real résumé aims to do). This allows you to feel like you are progressing toward your goals and will shake off feelings of frustration and depression if you are not feeling like you're making progress.

The third use case helps you focus on what's next from where you are in the mid-point. It will likely build off of the second use case, as once you work from where you started to where you are, you then want to figure out what to do next—i.e., what is the most logical next step.

The "how" to do this was hinted at in the above explanation of why, but the approach is near-identical every time:

  • Objective: A résumé often has a stated objective as to what the goal of your career is or your objective for the position you're applying for. Here, you're putting in your desired outcome(s) in life.
  • Experience: This is where you would put experiences you've had (if you've started toward the goal or have made related progress to date) and then experiences you'll need to have had to succeed (since this is an exercise to help you visualize your path and not an actual résumé, you can insert future experiences).
  • Education: You don't need to separate this like most real-world résumés do, but you're welcome to document qualifications here like degrees, licenses, etc.
  • Skills: Here, you'll want to document whatever skills you'll need to have to be effective.
  • Accomplishments: Best for the belief-building use case, you can list things you have done that show that you are capable of succeeding going forward, but you can also use this to list future milestones you'll want to have on your road to success if mapping out your future path.

When you define your goals, experiences, skills, and milestones, you'll have a nice roadmap of how to get from where you are/were to where you want to be in your life.

Finally, the "when" you should do this:

  • If you are lost and know that you won't proceed until you have it all figured out, this is a great way to come up with a definite aim and a concrete roadmap.
  • If you believe that something is impossible and so you know that you'll give up before you even try, this will change your beliefs to be more supportive and constructive.
  • If you have made progress but either experienced a setback or ran into trouble, this will help you to reassess how far you've come and where you need to go from here to get around these problems.

If you decide to complete this "life résumé" exercise, then hopefully this guide will help you as you try to make the most of it. It'll help you understand what you can get out of the exercise and how each element helps you to figure out your life direction. If you were wondering when it might come in handy, the details on the use cases might provide guidance as to times in your life where this exercise could be useful.

Remember that the goal in your life is always to continue growing and improving as a person toward better outcomes for yourself and your loved ones. All this exercise does is reinforce what you already know that you have to do, but it is useful when you are uncertain of the direction of that growth and improvement. It can be easy to lose your way when setbacks, problems, and adversity come into your life. This will hopefully help you to respond and continue forward toward success, happiness, and fulfillment.

How To Write a Resume Profile in Five Steps

Jacob Meade

Profiles vs. Objective Statements

The five steps to a profile, tying it all together, frequently asked questions about writing a resume profile.

The resume profile (or summary) describes your main credentials for your target job. Appearing at the top of the resume, it’s the first section hiring managers read and strongly influences whether they call you for an interview .

You may feel lost when developing your profile, especially if you’re just starting your resume. But it’s best to work on the profile after you’ve already drafted your professional experience, education, training, and other relevant areas. Then, you can develop your profile with a broader understanding of your career so far.

For a long time, the standard resume intro was an objective statement that would appear above or in place of the profile. Rather than describing an applicant’s key qualifications, the objective would state their end goal for their job search. An example is “Seeking a sales role where I can work on building win-win relationships with clients.” In recent years, the objective has fallen out of favor since it speaks to the job seeker’s needs rather than the hiring manager’s. So avoid using an objective and instead begin your resume with a profile summary of what you offer.

When you’re ready to start your profile, follow these steps:

Step 1. Write a simple statement of your job title and years of experience

For example, say you’re a sales manager who has risen through the ranks over 10 years. Start your profile with a line like:

Resourceful sales manager with over 10 years of advancement and experience.

But if you’re changing careers, use a more general intro statement that still relates to your goals and reflects your background. For instance, say you’d like to stay in sales but no longer in a leadership capacity. Use a broader line like “Resourceful sales professional with over 10 years of experience” to position yourself for the switch back to direct sales.

Step 2. Pinpoint and develop a common theme

Look over all your other resume sections and select three to five details that strike you as especially impressive or relevant. Then, review them all together. Does a common work theme or strength emerge? Write one or two profile sentences on that theme. For instance, if your highlights point to your expertise in engaging and collaborating with clients, that’s a great area to write about further.

Step 3. Avoid clichés by way of action verbs

At this stage, you may run into the problem of profile clichés. For instance (continuing the above example), you might describe your collaborative streak as “Excellent communication and collaboration skills.” But terms like this are overused and won’t add much value to your profile.

To avoid clichés and liven up your profile language, use complete sentences with action verbs. Think about what you actually do at work – the actions (or verbs) you take to generate results. This approach can turn a static word like “collaboration” into a specific, verb-powered phrase like “Collaborate with clients to find win-win product solutions.”

Step 4. Cite a specific achievement

If one or more of your highlights is a quantified achievement from your work history, you can repeat it in your profile to make the description more compelling and specific to you. Say one of your highlights is “Surpassed quota by 10% in 2013, 18% in 2014, 20% in 2015, and 22% in 2016 and 2017.” Consider adapting it to your profile with a phrase like “Achievements include surpassing quota by over 18% on average for five consecutive years.”

Putting together the steps so far, we have the basis for a strong profile:

Resourceful sales professional with over 10 years of experience. Collaborate with clients to find win-win product solutions, driving consistent revenue and profit growth. Achievements include surpassing quota by over 18% on average for five consecutive years.

Step 5. Plug in other key credentials

You can then round out your profile with one or two more statements on your other top qualifications. If one of your other highlights is an advanced degree or certification, that can give your summary a strong outro. Also, note that foreign language ability is often viewed as a key asset by employers, so if you have it, feature it in your profile.

After following these five steps, you should have a viable resume profile of your own, something on par with this finished example:

Resourceful sales professional with over 10 years of experience. Collaborate with clients to find win-win product solutions, driving consistent revenue and profit growth. Achievements include surpassing quota by over 18% on average for five consecutive years. Offer well-rounded business acumen and expertise, drawing on a recently finished MBA degree. Bilingual: fluent in English and French.

But then consider: Are you missing anything important? Have you left out a work highlight or skill area that’s key to your next job? If yes, add a sentence or two on those missing areas and take heart that you’re gaining an ear for the type of information a winning profile calls for.

Do I need a profile summary on my resume? -

Yes. Virtually any job seeker can improve their resume by adding a profile. A strong profile section catches a hiring manager’s attention by giving the key reasons you’ll thrive at their organization. In seconds, it assures the reader that you’re a strong candidate whose application is worth a closer look.

How long should my profile be? -

Many resume experts give strict parameters for profile length; three or four lines of text is the standard order. But profiles are more flexible than that. Don’t worry if your own profile comes in shorter or longer, given you’ve followed this process. And never add fancy language to your summary for its own sake.

What experience areas should I cite in my profile? -

Any, as long as they help present you as a strong candidate for your target job. Most job seekers will derive at least some profile content from their work experience. But you could also use details from your education, volunteer experience, or any other section of your resume.

Whether you’re a senior in college applying for your first full-time job or you’ve been in the biz for years and are looking to segue into a different role, we rounded up the top online resume writing services you can use to help get your application in tip-top shape. Plus, we’ve enlisted Shannon Conklin, director of career and leadership development at The College of New Jersey to help!

Hop to her picks below or check out our FAQ for more details on things to look for when picking the right resume builder for you.

TopResume

  • Packages with unlimited resume revisions
  • Free resume review
  • 60-day interview guarantee
  • Several customers who wrote reviews on Trustpilot mention having poor communication with their resume writers

TopResume is a beloved favorite — and for a good reason. It has four different packages depending on your career goals, some of which include unlimited revisions, a LinkedIn makeover, a cover letter and two interview prep sessions.

“TopResume continues to be a solid option,” Conklin shared. “It has strong descriptions, where the website and interface are easy to navigate to understand its process, its three packages, as well as testimonials.”

She also loves TopResume’s FAQ section, coupled with the various packages, that make its process clear and timeline. “There is also plenty of mention about AI and ATS technology,” she added. “If you need a resume quickly, one that accounts for technology, and a budget of only about $150, it looks like this service would be one to strongly consider.”

With TopResume, you’ll also get a 60-day interview guarantee. If you don’t get twice as many interviews, the platform will rewrite your resume for free. It’s pretty top tier, to say the least, and is a minimal investment for those hoping to find free resume-writing services.

Resume Companion

  • Self-directed service
  • Template-based
  • Must renew a subscription to edit resume in the future

“Resume Companion is a clean website with a clear message — build a resume quickly!” Conklin highlighted. “It offers templates, examples and advice on how to craft a resume, as well as a cover letter, as a self-directed service within about 15-minutes.”

What’s more, the service also makes it clear it offers a variety of templates based on industries and functions. “This can really help if you are trying to transition to a new field or your resume needs to be updated to reflect the latest in your industry,” she added.

With Resume Companion, you’ll be able to build your resume step by step, from selecting a professional template to answering a few simple questions to have your experience and skills added directly to your digital file. Namely, if you’re not much of a writer, you’ll appreciate its pre-written work experience bullet points to craft your resume in minutes and then apply away.

Not to mention, it’s only $8 a month, so if you want a one-and-done service, this one’s your best bet. Keep in mind that you will have to renew your subscription to edit in the future, but it’s a great budget-friendly option to pursue if you don’t want to be completely in the dark.

Resumeble

  • 4-day turnover on resume drafts
  • Three free revisions with standard resume package
  • Only the premium resume package includes a job guarantee

Resumeble is not only has a fun name, but it includes a resume and cover letter in its baseline package. If you’d like to upgrade, you can receive a LinkedIn write-up, a second resume version, thank you and follow-up notes and cold emails to recruiters.

“Have you applied to dozens of jobs, only to never get through?” Conklin questioned. “If this resonates because your resume is not optimized for ATS platforms, Resumeble might be the choice for you. Mention of ‘ATS,’ as well as their outcomes and ROI, are weaved throughout its site.”

Conklin told The Post that she’s seen many clients apply to dozens and dozens of companies, only to be vetted out due to ATS. “When that happens, I often advise networking to complement a revised, ATS-optimized resume.” she tipped off. “This brings me to one other noteworthy element to their various packages, they support your full professional profile; resume to LinkedIn to recruiter communication support.”

For those who want to spend less than $200 for online resume writing services, this all-in-one option is fairly priced, making it one of the best affordable resume writing services. If you’re only looking to refresh your LinkedIn, you’ll just pay a one-time $99 fee. For just your resume, it’s a one-time purchase of $129 for the service.

Best Customizable: BrandResumes

BrandResumes

  • Has a self pace job search course
  • Helpful step by step resume building guide
  • Some customers who reviewed the service on Trustpilot report time delays in receiving their resume

BrandResumes made the cut as one of our top choices for online resume services for a few reasons: it’s one of the platforms best for ATS keyword optimization and formatting for interviews, LinkedIn branding and a customizable interface. If you buy the deluxe package, you’ll have your resume distributed across the 60 top job boards (including industry-specific ones), so you’ll spend less time applying.

“Learning the fundamentals of resume writing is a skill that will carry you throughout your career, and BrandResumes offers courses and resources to accomplish just that,” Conklin highlighted. “Once you understand how to format a strong bullet point, or the style you find reflects your story and values, you can start crafting various resumes to appeal to different audiences and fields.”

BrandResumes also offers resources to launch your own resume writing business — a tool that can be valuable for career experts seeking professional resume writing services. “If you’re seeking to dig into how to revamp your resume, or you find yourself (like many in HR or career services) consistently asked to help a friend or family member with their materials, this service will align with your goals,” she added.

Best with Career Consulting: TopStack Resume

TopStack Resume

  • Pay only after you’re satisfied with the resume
  • According to TopStack Resume’s site, resume complete takes up to 2 weeks

TopStack Resume is a force to be reckoned with in the career development sphere. Notably, it’s one of the only services that provides career consulting. So, in addition to resume and cover letter formatting, you have the option to partake in one-on-one sessions with a career advisor.

“Five steps is all you need to follow for your resume review by TopStack,” Conklin put it simply. “The simplicity of this service and the range of offerings (from a resume for $139 to career consulting for its Premium Package ) can be valuable for any job seeker or career explorer.”

Moreover, if you find yourself in need of more career support, maybe you’re changing fields or returning to work after time off, this is a strong contender. “Be mindful of your budget and timeline, so you take full advantage of a career consultant; a solid service should focus on the process, as much as a strong career outcome,” she added.

Plus, TopStack Resume is unique in that it has a team of well-qualified writers to ensure your one-pager is the best it can be. At a fair price point, you can always upgrade to add on more benefits in the future.

Best for Quick Hiring: ZipJob

ZipJob

  • Fairly priced for the quality and swiftness of deliverables
  • Optimizes for ATS so you’ll have better odds of visibility before your resume lands in human hands
  • May be more difficult to ask for revisions if need be, due to the service’s robust turnaround time and automation

While no resume writing service can guarantee you landing your dream job, ZipJob has a unique offering in one of its packages that makes it a standout from the rest.

Ideal for candidates who are rapidly seeking their next role in a flash, ZipJob combines expert resume writers with the exact same tech employers to optimize your one-pager. The kicker? Its most popular plan, Fast Track, includes a professionally written resume, ATS optimization and direct writer messaging — but that’s not all.

Impressively, the Fast Track package for $189 also includes a cover letter and a 60-day interview guarantee. That’s how confident ZipJob is that you’ll get hired, and get hired quickly.

For $299, its Premium package includes a LinkedIn profile update to help maximize your chances and expedited delivery for super speed. If you want swiftness but don’t wish to compromise the quality of your application, you won’t have to worry with ZipJob.

Best One-on-One Collaboration: Upwork

Upwork

  • Several projects to choose from with unique writing strengths you may desire
  • Typically budget-friendly
  • Some options will have your resume written in only one business day
  • Price points vary and quality of work varies depending on which project provider you select, so take caution and read reviews before working with a given person

Individual-driven platforms like Upwork allow you to shop around for a resume writing service that matches your specific needs and budget. Similar to platforms like Skillshare where talented, qualified creators host a course offering or a service, Upwork allows you to select from a variety of different projects where you’ll have one-on-one attention. Consider it akin to being matched with an online counselor.

Generally budget-friendly, most of Upwork’s providers only take one business day to deliver. The majority of providers also have thousands of positive, near-five-star reviews, so it’s surely a service to consider.

The one downside to Upwork is that quality of work may differ slightly, though that’s a given with its platform structure. This differs from some other services like TopResume where the company at large has its own writing structure, so it’s just something to take note of. However, for its affordability and speed, it’s a great dip into the pool of resume writing and related services, without spending more on a professional-grade platform.

Best for Cover Letters: ResumeSpice

ResumeSpice

  • The baseline package offers a lot more than competitors, including phone consult, optimized draft and two edits
  • Cover and thank-you letters are added to packages at an additional charge

ResumeSpice is ready to add that much-needed spice to your resume. It doesn’t just provide three different package options, but it specifically tells you which one would work best for you. For example, if you have no more than two years in the workforce, you should select its baseline package ($449). This package includes a phone consultation, an eye-catching resume format, keyword optimization, a personalized draft, two rounds of revisions based on your feedback and finalized versions in both Microsoft Word and PDF formats.

“Solid service is evident across ResumeSpice, and its focus on Executive Resume stands out from others,” Conklin pinpointed. “If you find yourself wanting to get to that next level in your career, you really do need to consider an executive coach with an eye towards that goal for your materials.”

You might, for example, realize you have decades of experience and are unsure where to start to consolidate — Conklin offered. “This is one of the most frequent concerns when making this transition, and a third party like ResumeSpice can be an invaluable resource and sounding board,” she added. “Finally, its site is clear in terms of turnaround, which shows they value your time and manage expectations — a positive sign on what you can expect service-wise.”

ResumeSpice offers other à la carte services, too, including cover letter help, LinkedIn profile revamping, interview preparation and career coaching.

Best Budget: Craft Resumes

Craft Resumes

  • Unlimited revisions
  • 5 day delivery
  • Some reviewers mention time delays

Craft Resumes has an engaging, user-friendly interface that makes resume-building a fun, less stressful process. With ATS keyword optimization and a dedicated writer on your resume, rest assured that it will be in a healthy state to pass along to recruiters and job posters.

“Craft Resumes cleary focus on the ‘craft’ and design of writing resumes, where a distinguishing factor that caught my eye is their unlimited evaluation ‘at any reason’ for four days,” Conklin said, recommending the service. “This is valuable for job or graduate school seekers and career explorers, as you’ll likely have questions once you find an opportunity of interest.”

Similar to other services here, there is a one-on-one aspect that can be quite valuable, especially if you have the time. “There are also a variety of services and prices, not just resume writing,” she noted. “This is helpful for you budget, and evolving needs. Often times once you get a resume underway you start to realize that you’ll want other materials to be updated and aligned with your personal brand.”

For its most popular package, The Basic, you’ll have access to a single writer and unlimited revisions (which is a score compared to some other services on this list), strong and optimized words, unique formatting and a cover letter to increase your chances of landing an interview. However, Craft Resumes has other great packages worth exploring.

Best Resume Writing: Let’s Eat, Grandma Resume Service

Let's Eat, Grandma Resume Service

  • Consultation included with every package
  • Executive Concierge Service that includes 10 days of unlimited revisions
  • Quality writers and customer service, based off reviews
  • No academic CVs or federal resumes

Humorous name aside, resume service Let’s Eat, Grandma has a laser focus on punctuation (as you can tell because nobody intends to write that they’d like to eat their grandmother on a professional document) — as well as resume formatting. What’s great about this platform, specifically, is its vast packages, ranging from drafting your resume to offering cover letters and networking services to help boost your career trajectory.

“Let’s Eat, Grandma hones in immediately on its ‘custom-tailored’ approach,” Conklin said. “While every resume review should be tailored to account for your story (as mentioned above), it’s clear this is a value of this service. Client outcomes are also front and center, where a mix of employers and schools are listed; this is notable if continuing education is a goal of yours.”

With four packages available, and FAQs on the homepage highlighting its range (i.e. academic, federal government and more), Conklin appreciates how it’s clear that this service is distinguishing itself from others, especially given the range of specialty materials they can help you create.

What’s more, you’ll be assisted by a team of highly skilled writers who create targeted documents to help boost your chances of getting an interview. They’ll also speak to your unique strengths — and, therefore, amplify them on your resume — to tie your entire professional portfolio of experience together. They also have a package tailored for executives, making the platform a solid option for those needing executive resume writing services.

Which resume service is best?

The golden question, right? This depends mostly on your career goals. A range of services are available, and many are now even offered through LinkedIn.

“When considering a resume service, it is important to consider the extent of guidance you are seeking,” Conklin, who has 15 years of experience in higher education — told The Post.

“Are you overhauling your resume? Are you transitioning industries and need to consider a different format or approach? What are your financial resources to pay for one, or should you explore services offered from your alma mater or current institution if you are a current or graduate of higher education?,” she questioned.

You’ll also want to consider the resume services’ reputation, Conklin suggested: Are there reviews or endorsements of a service, especially if you are paying for one? What is the background, and is the resume service aligned with your industry of interest?

Is it worth paying for a resume service?

“It depends on the service and one’s circumstances as to whether it is ‘worth’ paying for the service,” Conklin said. “There are very reputable services out there, especially for more experienced career seekers. If you’re transitioning to a new field, or you are seeking to move to a senior or executive level, it could definitely be worth the cost.”

As a preliminary step, Conklin advised to really make sure you are an informed consumer when considering a resume service, and if you should pay or if you have a network or connections you can leverage for advice first.

How much does it cost to have someone write your resume?

“When an individual pays for a resume service, there may be a flat rate, or it is calculated on an hourly rate and requires at least two sessions,” Conklin explained. “For example, it could cost $150 for a single session.”

However, there are resume services that can significantly exceed that rate and are part of a package that might include a quick return and other support, from LinkedIn to interview coaching, that is over $600, she highlights.

What to include on your resume, according to an expert

“Your story is the focus of your resume, and it is critical to be honest and reflect on how you want to tell that, ultimately,” Conklin noted. “The order also depends on the stage of your career (early, mid, senior, executive) and the industry you are seeking.”

In academia, for example, you’ll see a curriculum vitae (CV) that is pages long to reflect one’s research, publications, and roles held. In financial services, you would have a one-page resume until you have significant work experience. Or, in the creative fields, you may have a one-page resume and then an online portfolio or website that exhibits your work to complement your resume, she explains.

“No matter the field you are pursuing, you always want to make sure you list your experiences in reverse chronological order, you include your education/training, think of the keywords and skills (and make sure those are prominently displayed and included), and also think of what is most relevant,” she listed. “The most relevant should be at the top.”

It is also key to consider Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), automated review systems that scan resumes as part of an organization’s vetting process. “The format could align or cause issues with an ATS system,” Conklin added. “This is why it’s important to do your research, leverage any connections you have to gain insights into a field and their preferred format and get advice on keywords, skills and experiences to include.”

“If you do your homework, you should find clues to answer the questions above and guide your resume writing approach,” Conklin shared.

How we chose resume services

At Post Wanted, here’s what we keep in mind when researching and hand-selecting resume services:

  • Customization : The best online resume services offer tailored resumes with personalized resume writing, in contrast to generic templates you can find for free.
  • Consultation : Some services offer a one-on-one consultation with your writer so they can scope out your specific attributes, career highlights and other aspects to your curriculum vitae you want to spotlight.
  • Comprehensive Packages : In addition to resumes, some services offer cover letters, LinkedIn profile optimization and career coaching. To some, this is worth the investment, though it may come with a higher price tag.
  • ATS Optimization : A great benefit to online resume services is the focus on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), as human recruiters typically use this software use these screening systems before it lands in their hands.
  • Turnaround Time : For some, there’s no time to be wasted when it comes to hunting for a new job. Looking at flexibility and speed is important; some services offer rush options for individuals who need a complete and optimized resume quickly.

How to Build a Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Life Here's how to build your 'life' resume, not just your 'business' resume.

By Lewis Howes Edited by Dan Bova Jun 17, 2018

This story originally appeared on Lewis Howes

There's one resource in this world we all take for granted: time . We're only on this planet for a small amount of time, and we tend to build routines in our lives that make the days roll by.

The next thing we know, we look in the mirror and we're 70. When you look at that face do you want to see a life of missed opportunities or one filled with experiences you are proud of? If you want the latter, you need to make sure you schedule time for you. Take the time to build your life resume, because that's what makes our lives much more interesting.

When you talk about someone, do you talk about how they clock in to work on time everyday at 9 a.m. and work late hours? Or, do you talk about the places they've been to and the experiences they've had?

On this episode of The School of Greatness, I bring you back someone who has decided to build their life's resume: Jesse Itzler.

Itzler enjoys living life "out of the box." In fact, he doesn't even have a box. The author of The New York Times bestseller, Living with a Seal , co-founded Marquis Jet, the world's largest private jet card company which he and his partner sold to Berkshire Hathaway/NetJets. Itzler then partnered with Zico coconut water, which he and his partner sold to The Coca-Cola Company.

He's also the kind of person that, when he wants something, he grabs onto the opportunity without delay. He recently decided he needed to detox his mind from electronics and the constant multitasking of today's world. So he ended up living with monks, in a room as small as a table, unable to communicate with his family, just to find himself.

The lessons he learned most were about the need to make time for yourself and the people around you that you care most about. In the end, that's where you'll have the most impact and where your true legacy will come from.

Learn more lessons from Jesse's isolation and time with the monks, on Episode 652.

45+ Best Communication Skills for Your Resume (Examples)

Discover the best communication skills for your resume. From verbal to written communication, learn how to list and describe them to make a lasting impression.

build your life resume review

When adding communication skills to your resume, focus on tailoring them to the job ad and using specific terms from the job description. Highlight achievements showcasing your communication strengths, whether it's leading a project, resolving conflicts, or using digital tools like Slack and Zoom. This not only aligns you with what employers are seeking, but also boosts your chances with applicant tracking systems. Always back up your skills with examples to show you can deliver results and work well with others.

Soft skills often get a bad rap for being less important. But they hold serious value — these skills are innate and not always teachable. Yet, simply stating “communication skills” in your resume is too vague to show off your strengths to a recruiter.

Solid communication is key to building relationships, expressing needs, and sharing information — it’s everywhere, including the workplace. The trick is to show your communication skills in a way that highlights what you can achieve and the potential you bring to the company.

And you can do this through your resume. This article will tell you:

  • All the top communication skills to include.
  • How to list your communication skills on a resume.
  • The best ways to improve your abilities for future job opportunities.

What Are Communication Skills and Why They Matter on a Resume?

Communication skills are how you share ideas, listen, and respond to others, whether verbal, non-verbal, visual, or written. We use these skills every day, so I’ll spare you the full textbook definition — it’s basically how you get your point across and understand others.

Here’s how the main types of communication can translate into a resume:

  • Verbal communication. We all learn to talk early on, but clear and confident communication is a skill that takes practice. On your resume, you can highlight cases where you led a meeting, conducted a presentation, or explained complex ideas to a colleague.
  • Non-verbal communication. This includes body language, eye contact, and facial expressions. Ever noticed how a smile can make someone more approachable? That’s non-verbal communication in action. Demonstrate this on your resume by mentioning roles where you engaged with clients face-to-face, showing approachability and confidence.
  • Written communication. Writing emails, reports, or even messages in a chat all fall under written communication. If you’ve ever written a LinkedIn post, a persuasive email, or a detailed report, highlight these experiences on your resume. Show your impact with examples of increased engagement or positive feedback.
  • Visual communication. Using visuals like graphs, charts, or slides to communicate is a great way to get your message across. On your resume, you can mention creating PowerPoint presentations or designing infographics to convey complex ideas or data.

Many communication skills are considered soft skills because they are personal traits that largely come from everyday experience—think active listening or body language. But many others are hard skills because they require specific knowledge and, usually, on-the-job training—for instance, negotiation techniques or even presentation skills.

With that said, all communication skills are precisely that: skills, not talents . And skills you can learn and improve. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a natural-born communicator, you can take steps to get better at both “hard” and “soft” types of communication skills.

Why do communication skills matter to employers?

Employers want candidates who can clearly express themselves and work well with others — would you really want a Dwight in your office? Good communication can prevent misunderstandings and frustration, making the workplace more productive.

Communication skills are also crucial across many areas of professional life. You can apply them in business meetings, team projects, customer interactions, or those “networking” sessions in the office kitchen. Showing recruiters you’ve mastered the art of communication is showing them your versatility.

Here’s a round-up of the top communication skills to include  on your resume:

Communication skills chart.

Top Communication Skills Examples

Once your resume grabs the recruiter’s attention, be prepared to discuss all those impressive skills during the interview. Make sure you genuinely understand each skill you’ve listed and how it relates to your experience.

Here’s a rundown of the top communication skills and how they play out in the workplace:

Verbal communication

Verbal communication skills are basically about how good you are with the words and sounds that come out of your or other people’s mouths — about how well you articulate your thoughts and how well you understand what others say. These skills include expressing your ideas, dealing with customers, or persuading your boss to upgrade the office coffee machine.

Strong verbal communication tells employers you can articulate information, suggestions, and feedback. For roles involving customer interactions or leadership, having solid speaking skills shows you can convey messages clearly and lead with confidence. But remember, verbal communication (like any other form of communication) is a two-way street. Active listening is just as important as speaking clearly.

Most of us can hold a conversation, so be specific on your resume.

Here are some examples of how to list verbal communication on a resume:

  • Interpersonal communication
  • Listening skills
  • Outbound calling
  • Body language
  • Foreign languages
  • Presenting skills

Written communication

Written communication skills are about how well you convey information through messages, emails, reports, and notes. You don’t need to be a literary genius, but you should be clear and concise to avoid misunderstandings.

One key thing to note: even if your job title doesn’t immediately bring “writing” to mind, strong writing skills can still be an asset on your resume.

When you write well, you can inform and persuade through your words, whether drafting reports, creating social media posts, or sending emails. And with so many of us working remotely, knowing how to communicate professionally (without overusing emojis or exclamation marks) is always a plus.

Check out these valuable writing skills for your resume:

  • Sending emails
  • Proposal and report writing
  • Spelling and grammar
  • Editing skills
  • Paraphrasing
  • Translation

Giving and accepting feedback

Giving and accepting feedback helps improve performance and productivity by showing employees and managers what’s working and what needs to change.

Employers want to know you can handle constructive criticism without feeling like you’re under attack. Including this skill on your resume highlights that you’re committed to growth and can push others to do the same, making you a strong collaborator and proactive learner.

Here’s how to frame those skills on a resume to show you’re dedicated to your development:

  • Constructive feedback
  • Active listening
  • Accountability
  • Willingness to learn
  • Open-mindedness

Team-building and collaboration

Team-building and collaboration involve working well with others to solve problems and achieve common goals. Effective team builders can delegate tasks, communicate clearly, and help team members grow.

Teamwork makes the dream work, so being able to share ideas and listen to others tells employers you can work harmoniously in a group. Highlighting team-building and collaboration on your resume also shows you can motivate and support your team toward success.

Here are some more skills to show you work well in a team:

  • Team communication
  • Delegation
  • Goal setting
  • Adaptability
  • Taking ownership
  • Inclusivity

Leadership skills

Leadership skills involve firing up your team, setting goals, training employees, and running operations. A successful leader can push their team to their full potential while making them feel valued and appreciated.

Trust is key, and people work better for managers they believe in — so your ability to build rapport and guide teams in a positive working environment is a must. Nobody feels inspired by a micromanaging boss breathing down their neck, right?

Here are some phrases that will make your leadership abilities shine on a resume:

  • Management abilities
  • Employee training
  • Motivational feedback
  • Planning and organization
  • Interviewing skills
  • Customer relationship management

Digital communication

Digital communication skills are essential in today’s remote and hybrid work environments. Knowing your way around Zoom, Slack, Asana and Microsoft Teams ensures easy collaboration and interaction.

Nobody wants to be the person who accidentally sends a private message to the entire team. Including this skill on your resume shows your ability to keep up with the times, especially handy for remote workers, or in areas like customer support or social media.

Consider listing these skills on your resume to show your technical communication prowess:

  • Online meeting etiquette
  • Remote collaboration
  • Professional branding
  • Customer support
  • Digital messaging
  • Social media networking

Conflict resolution

Conflict resolution skills help navigate and settle any disputes to maintain a positive workplace. Whether you’re negotiating tough deals, dealing with customer complaints, or deciding on the office AC temperature, you can apply these skills to a range of situations.

But it’s not just about settling disputes. Adding conflict resolution to your resume tells employers you value workplace harmony, which can boost productivity. It shows you have solid listening skills and that you consider others’ perspectives and respond thoughtfully.

Check out these examples of how to frame conflict resolution on a resume:

  • Mediation skills
  • Trust building
  • Employee relations
  • Problem-solving
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Impartiality

Negotiating skills

Negotiating skills are about reaching mutually beneficial agreements through formal contracts or verbal agreements. Skilled negotiators adapt their communication styles to fit the listener’s requests and avoid misunderstandings.

Pulling off a successful negotiation requires problem-solving, persuasive communication, and reading the room — all abilities that will make you an impressive candidate for future employers.

Negotiation skills aren’t limited to the bargaining table, though.

Take a look at some more specific ways to describe them on a resume:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Persuasive speaking
  • Assertive attitude
  • Rapport-building
  • Contract negotiation
  • Business negotiation

How to Find the Best Communication Skills to Put on a Resume?

Googling “communication skills” and copy-pasting the first result won’t cut it. Recruiters have seen “listening skills” way too many times.

To make an impression, you need to be smart with your word choice, understand what the employer is looking for, and show exactly how your skills make a difference.

Check the job description

Tweaking your resume to match the job description might seem like extra effort — but it’s an easy way to get inspiration on what skills and experience the employer wants from you.

Will you be working with a global team? Mention how your remote collaboration skills have helped you build connections. Are they looking for someone with growth potential? Outline your experiences in accepting and acting on feedback.

Using similar terms from the job description shows recruiters you’re the right fit for the role and boosts your chances with applicant tracking systems (ATS) when scanning resumes for keywords.

Check out this job ad for a product manager position:

product manager job description.

This company’s looking for someone who can communicate in group discussions, so mention times you led projects or regularly contributed to meetings to show you’re a team player. They also emphasized data visualization, so include your knack for explaining complex ideas to non-technical clients.

You don’t need to quote the job ad word for word — just outline your relevant experiences, and your skills will speak for themselves.

Research skills relevant to your industry

Every industry has its own communication style — whether it’s interviewing in recruitment, content creation in marketing, or interacting with customers in sales. Some working environments require online collaboration, while others have you mingling with your colleagues.

Recruiters look for candidates who understand the core skills of your chosen industry and can show proficiency in those areas. Doing your homework on industry-specific communication tells employers you have the skills to address the unique challenges and needs of that field.

Consider your achievements

If your skills list is still looking pretty thin, think about your accomplishments and how you’ve applied your skills in real-world scenarios.

Look at your past achievements and identify the communication skills that played a key role. Have you successfully led a team project? Emphasize your abilities in team communication, delegation, and even conflict resolution.

If you’re short on work experience, think about your days in education. Did you navigate a year of online learning during the pandemic? Perfect — you can list skills like remote collaboration, online messaging, and a great deal of patience on your resume.

Still stuck on inspiration? Check out our AI Skill Explorer to dig deeper into any key skills you may have missed.

How to Put Communication Skills on a Resume?

You’ve pinpointed your skills, but you can’t just list them on your resume and call it a day. Recruiters only spend a few seconds on each resume, so your skills must stand out and prove you’re a top-notch candidate.

Let’s dig into where you should include your skills and how to use them to show off your accomplishments.

Tailor to the job description

Job postings spell out exactly what they want — so use that to your advantage.

Start by digging into the job ad and highlighting any specific communication skills listed as requirements. But avoid copying and pasting generic terms like “client support.” These phrases are bland and don’t tell the recruiter what you bring to the table.

Focus on real wins — if they need someone to handle customer interactions, highlight your successes in customer service. You can also use action verbs, such as “presented” and “collaborated” to make your resume more dynamic and easier to scan by ATS systems.

You don’t need to overhaul your resume completely for each application. Just tweak your word choice and skill selection to match what each employer is looking for, and show how your skills translate into success.

Mention top skills in the resume summary

Your resume summary is your elevator pitch and how you’re going to grab a recruiter’s attention right off the bat. Make it concise, relevant, and interesting by focusing on the communication skills that make you a standout candidate.

Include the communication skills that are most relevant to the position. If the job requires strong verbal skills, emphasize your expertise in delivering engaging presentations or negotiating with stakeholders. Always aim to link these communication skills to your achievements to show the impact of your abilities.

Here’s an example of an eye-catching summary with a focus on communication skills:

Customer service specialist with a knack for effective verbal communication and problem-solving. Skilled in handling customer inquiries, resolving complaints, and presenting product features. Recognized for maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and maintaining positive client relationships.

Showcase skills via your work experience

Listing skills in bullet points is neat for summarizing, but it’s just that — a summary. Recruiters need to see how you put those skills into action and how they benefit the company. Saying you’re great with phone calls doesn’t mean much if you prefer leaving long voice notes (guilty as charged)!

When describing your work experience , pick specific examples that show how you’ve used your communication skills. Think about times when your communication skills were pivotal and delivered real results.

Did you lead a successful project meeting? Or negotiate a deal that brought in significant revenue? These are gold for showcasing your abilities. And you can add more weight to your accomplishments by using real numbers to back up your claims.

Here’s how to show your skills in your work experience section with measurable outcomes:

Administrative Assistant | ABC Company March 2019 — Present • Managed office communications, including emails, phone calls, and scheduling meetings, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. • Coordinated travel arrangements and itineraries for executives, managing detailed records and expense reports. • Developed and maintained filing systems, boosting data retrieval efficiency by 30%. • Assisted in preparing presentations and translating complex data into clear, concise information for team meetings. • Acted as a liaison between departments, encouraging effective communication and collaboration across the organization. • Organized company events and meetings, ensuring all logistics were handled seamlessly and attendees were well-informed.

Through these experiences, the jobseeker is demonstrating key skills, like conveying complex information, teamwork, and leadership abilities. It's not about cramming “communication” into every sentence, but strategically emphasizing how strong communication skills helped you deliver results.

Summarize with a list of skills

Once you’ve woven your abilities into your work experience, you can summarize them in your skills section. Including a bulleted list lets recruiters and ATS scanners quickly identify your strengths.

Here’s an example of how to outline your skills:

• Presenting data. Excellent at presenting complex information and ideas in meetings and client interactions. • Team Collaboration. Effective in working with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals. • Data Visualization. Adept at explaining data insights to non-technical stakeholders. • Analytical Skills. History of identifying issues and implementing practical solutions. • Project Management. Expertise in planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure successful completion. • Technical Knowledge. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software, like Asana and Trello.

But remember, recruiters will only glance over this section — they might even use it to determine if the rest of your resume is worth investigating. So make sure you tailor your skills to match keywords in the job description.

While it’s handy to cover the basics, avoid using too many generic terms. Instead, opt for specific skills and tools, such as “Project Management,” “Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Software,” or “Digital Marketing Campaigns.”

Spotlight skills using the right format

Many assume that a functional or combination format is the answer to drawing attention to your skills. However, using a functional or combination resume is a risky departure from the standard, recruiter-approved reverse-chronological resume format, which places your work experience front and center.

Here’s a rundown of the main resume formats:

  • Reverse-chronological format . This widely used format highlights your work history, starting with your most recent position and working backward. Recruiters favor this layout because it clearly showcases your career progression and makes it easy to find key information. I highly recommend this structure to boost your chances of getting noticed.
  • Functional (skills-based) format . The functional format places your skills front and center, but can often lead recruiters to make the wrong assumptions and wonder what you have to hide. This outdated format also doesn’t perform well with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), so I wouldn’t recommend going down this route.
  • Hybrid (combination) format. Combining these two formats can be effective if you want to highlight your extensive skills upfront with extensive work experience. This format is a good choice if you have plenty of work experience, numerous accomplishments, or a diverse set of technical skills.

My go-to choice would be the reverse chronological format or the hybrid structure, where you place your skills up top with specific examples or achievements that show how you’ve used these skills in real situations.

Here’s an example from a combination resume:

Customer Service:

• Resolved an average of 30 customer inquiries per day, with a 95% satisfaction rate. • Implemented a new customer feedback system that improved response times by 50%. • Improved retention rates by over 25% by designing and implementing customized cancellation surveys. • Trained and onboarded 22 Junior Customer Service Representatives.

Organizing your skills like this shows employers exactly what expertise you bring to the table. But you can demonstrate your skills just as effectively using a reverse chronological format — you just need to make sure that your descriptions of past jobs reflect whatever skills you listed in the skills section.

Focus on positive outcomes

You’ve got the gist by now — whenever you mention your skills or experiences, highlight the positive outcomes. So, you wrote social media posts for your company; did they boost engagement? Did your powers of persuasion close any deals?

Focusing on positive outcomes means you’re not just listing responsibilities — you’re showing employers the real impact of your communication skills and your ability to deliver results. Talk about how your clear communication helped finish a project ahead of schedule, or how your presentation skills secured a new client.

Use numbers and metrics whenever you can. Instead of saying you improved customer satisfaction, say you increased it by 20% through adaptable communication strategies.

If you’ve received awards or recognition tied to your communication skills, flaunt them. Mention specific achievements like winning a speech competition or receiving praise for a successful presentation.

Be clear and concise

You can’t claim to be a master communicator if your resume isn’t clear. Your grammar skills, writing style, and ability to tell your story will be under scrutiny — you don’t want to miss an opportunity because of a few typos.

When crafting your resume, go through it with a fine-tooth comb and remove any unnecessary details or wordy phrases to keep it to the point. Remember, recruiters take less than ten seconds to scan your resume — you want them to focus on the good stuff.

Space on your resume is precious real estate, so make every word count. Highlight your communication skills and other abilities concisely. Use bullet points to list achievements and skills — it’s easier to read and quickly grabs the recruiter’s attention.

Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills

You’re probably itching to send out your resume and land that job, not spend more time tweaking your skills. But trust me, sharpening your communication skills is worth it. These skills are versatile and can open up all kinds of doors in any industry you choose. Plus, those improved skills will eventually shine on your resume.

Improving your communication skills is easy. It just takes a bit of self-reflection, a fresh perspective, and a genuine desire to get better. Simple steps that can lead to big results down the road.

Master active listening

The tech boom has made our attention spans shorter — how many times have you glanced at your phone mid-conversation? Start by putting away your phone, closing your laptop, and giving the person your full attention.

Resist the urge to jump in with questions or solutions prematurely. We’ve all been guilty of planning our response before the other person finishes — and people notice. Let them complete their thoughts to show you’re genuinely listening and understanding their message.

Once they’ve wrapped up, take a moment to summarize what you’ve heard. You might say, “So, what I’m hearing is…” This shows you’re paying attention while clarifying any potential misunderstandings.

Show interest and ask questions

Small talk easily makes it on the list of things I prefer to avoid. You’re not exactly showcasing your communication skills if your go-to topic is the weather.

Try asking open-ended questions in discussions that get people talking more. Skip the yes or no non-starters and go for open-ended questions like, “How did you tackle that problem?” or “What do you think about this plan?” It shows you’re genuinely curious about their perspective and opens the conversation.

Don't be afraid to dig deeper into topics that interest you or where you need more clarity. Asking follow-up questions shows you’re really processing what’s being said and want to learn more, leading to more engaging chats and stronger connections.

Go out of your comfort zone

Fun fact: Back in my early 20s, I moved to a foreign country by myself — no job, no friends, and no grasp of the language. Did it make me a more confident and self-assured person? Absolutely.

There’s a reason people tell you to venture out of your comfort zone — and honestly, it’s never as scary as you imagine.

Challenge yourself with new communication tasks regularly. It could mean stepping up to lead a meeting, speaking up in group discussions, or presenting ideas to a larger audience. Each challenge (whether big or small) adds to your confidence and broadens your skills, making future interactions less daunting.

And you don’t have to dive in headfirst. Let’s say you have a presentation coming up — take some time to outline your points, anticipate questions, and consider how best to get your message across. Practice and preparation are key to making you feel more at ease.

Build relationships

Good communication starts with getting along with the people around you. Take time to connect with your coworkers on a personal level. Ask about their weekend plans or what they do for fun outside of work.

Approach conversations with a friendly and positive attitude. No one wants to talk to someone who looks like they just had a sour glass of milk. Smile, make eye contact, and use a polite tone to create a welcoming atmosphere where communication flows naturally.

As you build deeper relationships, your confidence will grow, giving you more room to improve your communication skills. Who knows? It might even lead to a promotion or an interesting networking opportunity.

Change your mindset

Changing your perspective is easier said than done, right? When I first entered the professional world, I wasn’t great at taking feedback. I’d get frustrated and defensive whenever someone pointed out areas for improvement.

But then I realized, how does getting defensive serve me? It doesn't help me learn or grow; it only holds me back. So, I decided to shift my mindset. I started seeing feedback not as criticism, but as valuable insights to help me get better.

Surprise, surprise — once I started embracing feedback and thinking about how I could use it to improve, things got a lot smoother. Those negative feelings I used to have? They faded away.

Feedback is your golden opportunity to learn and grow. When someone gives you feedback, they are ultimately trying to help, so listen with an open mind. Everyone’s got their perspective, so take the time to understand where they’re coming from. And don’t be afraid to challenge your own beliefs — sometimes, our mindset can hold us back without us even realizing it.

Learn from the experts

We all know someone who can stroll into any room and strike up a conversation with ease. Pay attention to how they talk — their tone, facial expressions, and body language. What makes their communication so smooth and engaging? Reflect on this and apply those techniques to your conversations and presentations.

If your job relies heavily on customer service or client interaction, you can even check out platforms like Coursera and Udemy, which offer a range of courses on communication skills.

Here are some top recommendations:

  • Successful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills (edX)
  • Finding Your Professional Voice: Confidence & Impact (Coursera)
  • The Complete Communication Skills Master Class for Life (Udemy)
  • Winning Communication Skills for Telephone & Conference Calls (Udemy)
  • Effective Communication: Writing, Design, and Presentation Specialization (Coursera)

Look for courses that align with your interests and career goals. Whether it’s nailing public speaking or polishing your writing chops, structured courses can dish out some great tips and techniques.

But I'd only recommend shelling out for a course if your job hinges on strong communication skills. If not, there are tons of freebies out there, like TED Talks and documentaries on communication styles and tricks. Take notes on how top-notch speakers grip their audience, organize their messages, and use language to get their point across.

Here’s a recap of all the tips and tricks you need to know when adding communication skills to your resume:

  • Don’t just say “excellent communication skills.” Instead, mention specific skills like “negotiation,” or “public speaking,” to add clarity and show recruiters what you can offer the company.
  • Match your communication skills to those listed in the job description. If they value teamwork, emphasize specific collaborative skills or your experiences working on successful team projects.
  • Start bullet points with action verbs like “presented,” “collaborated,” “mediated,” or “negotiated” to show practical application and boost your chances with ATS scanners.
  • Include numbers to quantify your positive impact. For example, “increased customer satisfaction by 20% through effective communication strategies.”
  • Mention specific situations where your communication skills made a difference, such as closing a deal or delivering a key presentation to clients.
  • Focus on positive outcomes of your communication efforts, like “secured a new client” or “resolved conflicts efficiently,” to demonstrate results and achievements.
  • If you have many communication skills under your belt, consider a dedicated skills section to list them clearly — just avoid generic statements.
  • Be clear and concise in your descriptions to keep your resume easy to read and impactful, ensuring it grabs the recruiter's attention.

How do you describe communication skills on a resume?

First, include your most important skills in the skills section. But don’t stop there. Describe your communication skills by outlining your experiences and any positive outcomes. For example, “Negotiated contracts with vendors, resulting in a 15% cost reduction.” By focusing on your accomplishments, you’re telling the recruiter how your skills have a tangible impact.

What is considered an extensive communication skill?

Extensive communication skills cover a broad spectrum of abilities, including verbal (public speaking, storytelling), written (emails, reports), listening (active listening, empathy), and non-verbal communication (body language, eye contact). Mastery in multiple areas, such as conflict resolution, persuasive communication, and digital communication tools, also falls under this category.

How to say you have good communication skills on a resume?

Simply saying you have “good communication skills” is generic and doesn’t tell recruiters what you can bring to the table. Instead, use specific skills to showcase your achievements. For example, “Authored and edited newsletters that increased readership by 40%.”

What is another word for communication?

“Interaction” or “dialogue” can serve as alternatives for communication. Depending on the context, terms like “correspondence” (for written communication) or “engagement” (for interactive communication) could also be appropriate.

Other synonyms for communication skills include “people skills”, “social intelligence”, and “interpersonal skills”.

What is a good sentence for communication skills?

A good sentence demonstrating your communication skills should focus on specific abilities and how they contributed towards your accomplishments. You could say, “articulated complex ideas clearly, boosting team productivity through improved understanding and collaboration.

  • Cost-There isn’t a decent free option with MyPerfectResume. A trial period usually indicates free trial usage, but that is not the case here. You can build your resume and download it, but the only free choice is to download your resume in .txt format. That is a waste of your important time since the professional format is generally what you want with a resume builder!
  • MyPerfectResume provides a lot of help and suggestions but you are still in charge of the end result. Their resume builder tool is still just a tool and can’t compete with the originality and experience of professional resume writers. Resume Writing Services are best if you want to place the decision making in the hands of professional writers.

Resume writing services are another tool in the resume creation arsenal that can help give job seekers an advantage. A resume writing service will typically gather information from you and the existing resume you have to then create a new resume for you. They will also take your current resume and give it a fresh look and feel, but it can come at a higher cost.

These services typically facilitate conversations with industry-specific, professional writers. They take your input, your skills, and create the resume for you. It takes the bulk of the work off of your plate so that you can focus on the job search.

Resume builders help job seekers to create a professional resume quickly. The big differentiator with the resume builder is that the job seeker is making all of the data and format decisions themselves. They plug information into a selected interactive online template and build a resume from the data pieces they choose to include. A user can also upload an existing format and the service will incorporate it into a selected template.

MyPerfectResume offers an entire suite of services for job seekers whether they are just looking to build their resume themselves or want to leave the decision making to the pros and utilize resume writing and cover letter creation services. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has decided on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate in her bid for the White House. The 60-year-old Democrat and military veteran rose to the forefront with a series of plain-spoken television appearances in the days after President Joe Biden decided not to seek a second term. He has made his state a bastion of liberal policy and, this year, one of the few states to protect fans buying tickets online for Taylor Swift concerts and other live events.

Some things to know about Walz:

Walz comes from rural America

It would be hard to find a more vivid representative of the American heartland than Walz. Born in West Point, Nebraska, a community of about 3,500 people northwest of Omaha, Walz joined the Army National Guard and became a teacher in Nebraska.

He and his wife moved to Mankato in southern Minnesota in the 1990s. That’s where he taught social studies and coached football at Mankato West High School, including for the 1999 team that won the first of the school’s four state championships. He still points to his union membership there.

Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard, rising to command sergeant major, one of the highest enlisted ranks in the military, although he didn’t complete all the training before he retired so his rank for benefits purposes was set at master sergeant.

He has a proven ability to connect with conservative voters

In his first race for Congress, Walz upset a Republican incumbent. That was in 2006, when he won in a largely rural, southern Minnesota congressional district against six-term Rep. Gil Gutknecht. Walz capitalized on voter anger with then-President George W. Bush and the Iraq war.

During six terms in the U.S. House, Walz championed veterans’ issues.

He’s also shown a down-to-earth side, partly through social media video posts with his daughter, Hope. One last fall showed them trying a Minnesota State Fair ride, “The Slingshot,” after they bantered about fair food and her being a vegetarian.

He could help the ticket in key Midwestern states

While Walz isn’t from one of the crucial “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where both sides believe they need to win, he’s right next door. He also could ensure that Minnesota stays in the hands of Democrats.

That’s important because former President Donald Trump has portrayed Minnesota as being in play this year, even though the state hasn’t elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006. A GOP presidential candidate hasn’t carried the state since President Richard Nixon’s landslide in 1972, but Trump has already campaigned there .

When Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton decided not to seek a third term in 2018, Walz campaigned and won the office on a “One Minnesota” theme.

Walz also speaks comfortably about issues that matter to voters in the Rust Belt. He’s been a champion of Democratic causes, including union organizing, workers’ rights and a $15-an-hour minimum wage.

He has experience with divided government

In his first term as governor, Walz faced a Legislature split between a Democratic-led House and a Republican-controlled Senate that resisted his proposals to use higher taxes to boost money for schools, health care and roads. But he and lawmakers brokered compromises that made the state’s divided government still seem productive.

Bipartisan cooperation became tougher during his second year as he used the governor’s emergency power during the COVID-19 pandemic to shutter businesses and close schools. Republicans pushed back and forced out some agency heads. Republicans also remain critical of Walz over what they see as his slow response to sometimes violent unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.

Things got easier for Walz in his second term, after he defeated Republican Scott Jensen , a physician known nationally as a vaccine skeptic. Democrats gained control of both legislative chambers, clearing the way for a more liberal course in state government, aided by a huge budget surplus.

Walz and lawmakers eliminated nearly all of the state abortion restrictions enacted in the past by Republicans, protected gender-affirming care for transgender youth and legalized the recreational use of marijuana.

Rejecting Republican pleas that the state budget surplus be used to cut taxes, Democrats funded free school meals for children, free tuition at public colleges for students in families earning under $80,000 a year, a paid family and medical leave program and health insurance coverage regardless of a person’s immigration status.

He has an ear for sound-bite politics

Walz called Republican nominee Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance “just weird” in an MSNBC interview last month and the Democratic Governors Association — which Walz chairs — amplified the point in a post on X . Walz later reiterated the characterization on CNN, citing Trump’s repeated mentions of the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter from the film “Silence of the Lambs” in stump speeches.

The word quickly morphed into a theme for Harris and other Democrats and has a chance to be a watchword of the undoubtedly weird 2024 election.
