Sample industrial attachment letter and how to write an industrial attachment application letter

Industrial attachment also known by many as internship normally lasts for three months but the duration differs from institution to institution. Some companies pay for industrial attachment while others do not pay (in an article we had written earlier, we provided a list of companies that pay for industrial attachment).  To increase your chances of getting an industrial attachment you have to write an appealing attachment letter.

When writing an industrial attachment application letter or internship application letter be precise and ensure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors in your letter.  Company directors have no time to read very long letters.  Also, ensure that you have attached your CV to accompany your industrial attachment application letter.  Do not be worried about the content in your CV, the company directors or human resource department understand that you are a student so they don’t expect much in your CV.

How to write application letter: Formal format

  •  At the top of the application letter should be your address then followed by the address of the company or receiver. It is not advisable to write your name at the top of a letter.   (Check for the sample application letter below)
  • Thereafter the salutation .  Use  Sir or Madam if you do not know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Reference (This is the title of the application letter) example Application for internship in the engineering department
  • Opening paragraph : This paragraph should state the position you are applying to or for and how you knew of the position. It should also contain a basic introduction of who you are.
  • Body paragraph : Explain why you are interested in the position you are applying for, demonstrate your understanding of the position, talk about your qualification and skills in brief as they will be contained in your CV.
  • Conclusion Paragraph : State that you are ready to take the opportunity fairly. Thank the employer for her/his consideration in advance.
  • Closing remarks or complimentary remarks: End your letter “Yours Sincerely”  if you have begun it with a person’s title and family name. If you have begun “Dear Sir or Madam”, then end your letter “Yours faithfully”

The Civil Engineer cover letter examples above should give you a good idea of the type of content you need to include in your own cover letter, and how it should be structured.

But if you’re really looking to wow recruiters and get your CV in front of the very best employers, then check out our guidance on how to write your own effective cover letter below.

How to write a Civil Engineer cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

After you have greeted the recruiter, it’s important to state the job you are applying to.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so they need to know exactly which job you are referring to.

Be as specific as possible and use a reference number if you can find one.

Here are some examples you can use;

  • I am interested in applying for the role of admin assistant with your organisation.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 4057393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advertisement for a trainee project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your CV, you should sign off with a professional signature.

This will give your cover letter a slick appearance and also give the recruiter all of the necessary contact information they need to get in touch with you.

The information to add should include:

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Kindest regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network –  e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Jill North IT Project Manager 078837437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip: To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate documents that you could copy in.

To attract and entice recruiters, stick with the following key subjects in your cover letter – adapting them to fit your profession and target jobs.

  • Your professional experience – Employers will be keen to know if your experience is suitable for the job you are applying to, so provide a good summary of it in your cover letter.

Superior Civil 14 Main Drive, Gilford, Surrey

Dear Mr. Hollis,

I’m emailing to submit my application for the civil engineer position, which I found posted on LinkedIn. I have 6 years of experience in a public engineering firm, and my skills include site management and project planning. My experience makes me a strong applicant for this role.

In my previous position as a civil site engineer, I was responsible for leading a large team of people in the construction of the Surrey River bridge. In addition to regular communication with city officials, I had to keep a tight budget and work with changing deadlines. My strong interpersonal skills allowed me to lead an organized team, and we completed our project with a budget surplus. These experiences make me an asset to your organization.

I understand Superior Civil will undertake some large projects this year, and I’m eager to join a company with such a strong commitment to excellence. I’m excited by the prospect of bringing my expertise to your organization.

Attached is my resume, which highlights my education and professional experience. If you have any questions or need me to provide further information, please contact me by phone or email. Thank you for your consideration.

If you’re struggling to start your application letter for a civil engineer position, you’re not alone. It’s a tough task, but there are a few simple things you can do to elevate a cover letter for civil engineer jobs. Follow these tips to craft a successful civil engineer application letter.

📝 Do proper research

Before writing an application letter for your civil engineer position, research the company you applied to, to get a sense of their goals, values, and mission. Look for ways to work that research into your cover letter for civil engineers. If you can demonstrate that your values and goals are in line with the organization’s, your civil engineer application letter will be more attractive to the hiring manager.

📝 Include necessary elements

A cover letter for a civil engineering job should have the same structure and elements as any other cover letter, like titles and sign-offs. Don’t forget these components when you are writing your civil engineer application letter.

  • Information of sender and recipient

The start of your civil engineer application letter should have your name and basic contact information. You should also properly address any cover letter for a civil engineering job to the right person and include their name and title, as well as the company they work for. As you write your civil engineer application letter, if you don’t know who the hiring manager is, you can look it up online or make inquiries. Including the recipient information in your application letter for a civil engineer position is more professional and shows you made an extra effort.

  • A clear subject line (for emails)

If you are sending a civil engineering job application letter by email, make sure your subject line is clear. Let the recipient know that you are submitting a cover letter for a civil engineering job with words like ‘application’ or ‘job posting.’ Include the position you are applying for, and the positing number if there is one.

The greeting of your civil engineer application letter should be formal, professional, and polite. ‘Dear’ is tried and true!

  • Body paragraph(s)

Use the body of your civil engineering job application letter to highlight your relevant skills and experience. Keep the body paragraphs concise and avoid summing up your entire work history. In the body of the cover letter for the civil engineering job, choose specific examples of your skills in action and direct results of your work. Making the body of your civil engineer application letter brief and clear will keep the reader’s interest.

In the closing paragraph of your cover letter for a civil engineering job, let the manager know how they can reach you, and show your interest in a meeting and excitement for the position. Finally, thank the manager for their time and attention to your civil engineer application letter.

Like the greeting, the sign-off of your cover letter for civil engineering should be professional and polite. Sincerely, warm regards, or respectfully are safe choices. Don’t make your civil engineer application letter sign-off too familiar or informal.

  • Your contact information (for emails)

After your sign-off, write your information to finish your civil engineering application letter. Include your phone number and email, even though your recipient will already have it. Repeating this information in a cover letter for civil engineers will make it easier for the hiring manager to contact you.

📝 Showcase relevant skills

What's The Best Structure For Civil Engineer Cover Letters?

After creating an impressive Civil Engineer resume , the next step is crafting a compelling cover letter to accompany your job applications. It's essential to remember that your cover letter should maintain a formal tone and follow a recommended structure. But what exactly does this structure entail, and what key elements should be included in a Civil Engineer cover letter? Let's explore the guidelines and components that will make your cover letter stand out.

Key Components For Civil Engineer Cover Letters:

  • Your contact information, including the date of writing
  • The recipient's details, such as the company's name and the name of the addressee
  • A professional greeting or salutation, like "Dear Mr. Levi,"
  • An attention-grabbing opening statement to captivate the reader's interest
  • A concise paragraph explaining why you are an excellent fit for the role
  • Another paragraph highlighting why the position aligns with your career goals and aspirations
  • A closing statement that reinforces your enthusiasm and suitability for the role
  • A complimentary closing, such as "Regards" or "Sincerely," followed by your name
  • An optional postscript (P.S.) to add a brief, impactful note or mention any additional relevant information.

Cover Letter Header

A header in a cover letter should typically include the following information:

  • Your Full Name: Begin with your first and last name, written in a clear and legible format.
  • Contact Information: Include your phone number, email address, and optionally, your mailing address. Providing multiple methods of contact ensures that the hiring manager can reach you easily.
  • Date: Add the date on which you are writing the cover letter. This helps establish the timeline of your application.

It's important to place the header at the top of the cover letter, aligning it to the left or center of the page. This ensures that the reader can quickly identify your contact details and know when the cover letter was written.

Cover Letter Greeting / Salutation

A greeting in a cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • Personalized Salutation: Address the hiring manager or the specific recipient of the cover letter by their name. If the name is not mentioned in the job posting or you are unsure about the recipient's name, it's acceptable to use a general salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team."
  • Professional Tone: Maintain a formal and respectful tone throughout the greeting. Avoid using overly casual language or informal expressions.
  • Correct Spelling and Title: Double-check the spelling of the recipient's name and ensure that you use the appropriate title (e.g., Mr., Ms., Dr., or Professor) if applicable. This shows attention to detail and professionalism.

For example, a suitable greeting could be "Dear Ms. Johnson," or "Dear Hiring Manager," depending on the information available. It's important to tailor the greeting to the specific recipient to create a personalized and professional tone for your cover letter.

Cover Letter Introduction

An introduction for a cover letter should capture the reader's attention and provide a brief overview of your background and interest in the position. Here's how an effective introduction should look:

  • Opening Statement: Start with a strong opening sentence that immediately grabs the reader's attention. Consider mentioning your enthusiasm for the job opportunity or any specific aspect of the company or organization that sparked your interest.
  • Brief Introduction: Provide a concise introduction of yourself and mention the specific position you are applying for. Include any relevant background information, such as your current role, educational background, or notable achievements that are directly related to the position.
  • Connection to the Company: Demonstrate your knowledge of the company or organization and establish a connection between your skills and experiences with their mission, values, or industry. Showcasing your understanding and alignment with their goals helps to emphasize your fit for the role.
  • Engaging Hook: Consider including a compelling sentence or two that highlights your unique selling points or key qualifications that make you stand out from other candidates. This can be a specific accomplishment, a relevant skill, or an experience that demonstrates your value as a potential employee.
  • Transition to the Body: Conclude the introduction by smoothly transitioning to the main body of the cover letter, where you will provide more detailed information about your qualifications, experiences, and how they align with the requirements of the position.

By following these guidelines, your cover letter introduction will make a strong first impression and set the stage for the rest of your application.

  • Summary of Interest: In the conclusion paragraph, summarize your interest in the position and reiterate your enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the organization or school. • Appreciation and Gratitude: Express appreciation for the reader's time and consideration in reviewing your application. Thank them for the opportunity to be considered for the position and acknowledge any additional materials or documents you have included, such as references or a portfolio.
  • Call to Action: Conclude the cover letter with a clear call to action. Indicate your availability for an interview or express your interest in discussing the opportunity further. Encourage the reader to contact you to schedule a meeting or provide any additional information they may require.
  • Complimentary Closing: Choose a professional and appropriate complimentary closing to end your cover letter, such as "Sincerely," "Best Regards," or "Thank you." Ensure the closing reflects the overall tone and formality of the letter.
  • Signature: Below the complimentary closing, leave space for your handwritten signature. Sign your name in ink using a legible and professional style. If you are submitting a digital or typed cover letter, you can simply type your full name.
  • Typed Name: Beneath your signature, type your full name in a clear and readable font. This allows for easy identification and ensures clarity in case the handwritten signature is not clear.

Importance of a Civil Engineer Cover Letter and Resume

Having a strong civil engineer cover letter and resume is one of the best ways to secure a job in the industry. They allow employers to learn about who you are, what qualifications and relevant experiences you have, why you’re ideal for the position, and how you can contribute to their company.

Civil Engineer Cover Letter and Resume FAQ

It is not always mandatory to submit a cover letter, but it could give you a competitive advantage. As civil engineering is a competitive industry, your cover letter will often be your only means of convincing employers that you’re the most ideal candidate.

Unless requested otherwise, your cover letter and resume should be submitted together. This way, the recruiting team can easily refer to either document throughout the hiring process.

Your cover letter should include essential components like an introduction, work experience, educational background, skills, and accomplishments. You should read the job description and design your cover letter to suit the job role and company.

Your cover letter should be one page long. It should be brief and to the point. A cover letter that is longer than that might deter hiring managers from reading it as they often receive a large volume of applications and are pressed for time.

Civil Engineer   Cover Letter

Civil engineer cover letter (with examples).

Civil engineers work to design and oversee major infrastructural construction projects. Depending on their position and areas of expertise, they may work to build roads, bridges, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, or systems for water supply and sewage treatment. The job requires both great management skills and great technical know-how.

Civil engineers act as a link between the technical elements of a project, and the logistical elements of managing that project. They are important for ensuring that projects are well designed and well prepared on all fronts. The job can net a great salary, but these roles can be highly competitive .

Employers want to work with civil engineers who have a strong knowledge within their discipline and good designing instincts. In pre-planning for time, labor, and resources, civil engineers must have the ability to take a broad look at projects while still paying attention to the details .

While you may have the experience, the training, and the passion required for the job, it all comes down to how you explain and present these assets to future employers. The employee who can apply their skills and experience in the most convincing and impactful way will always have the upper hand.

During the job search process, individualized cover letters are the best way to show off how good you are at presenting yourself and applying your experience. In writing a cover letter, you get an opportunity to explain upfront how exactly you fit into this specific role, and what makes you a great civil engineer more generally.

In this article, we’ll talk about the steps to writing a perfect cover letter for a civil engineer position. We’ll run you through the parts you need to include, skills to emphasize for civil engineers, and some helpful examples to aid you in your writing process.

Parts of a Civil Engineer Cover Letter

Every cover letter, regardless of the position, will need to utilize this same standard format and include all of the following parts:

Salutation/greeting. After your header format, which will include your full name and contact information, your greeting will be the first words written on the page . Almost always, this will look like “Dear,” followed by an honorific such as Ms., Mr., or Mx. and the receiver ’s last name.

If you are on friendly terms with the receiver or if you are applying to a less formal workplace, you may choose to address the receiver by their first name.

Opening. When you’re writing the actual content of your letter, always begin with a statement on why you are writing . Your opening should clarify which position you are applying for, and perhaps mention how you found out about this open position.

Speak on your qualifications for this position in a more generalized way and emphasize why you would like to work at this specific position in this specific organization.

Body. Your body paragraph (s) should do the majority of the work in explaining your perfect fit for the position. Tailor your experience towards the duties described in the job posting, and focus on how you can serve the organization rather than how the organization will serve you.

Closing. Your closing paragraph will end the letter strategically to both wrap up the content and reinforce your interest in the position. State thanks to the reader , include information about any additional documents, and end with a “call to action” that prompts them to move forward with the process.

Complimentary close. At the very end of your letter , following the guidelines of proper professional letter writing, include a closing phrase followed by your name and/or digital signature. Something like “Sincerely,” “Best,” or “Regards,” will work just fine.

Be sure that whatever design and formatting you choose to have on this cover letter is tasteful, minimal, and consistent throughout. Keep the letter clean, concise, and easy to read at one page, maximum. The key is to pack as much info into as little space as you can. Read on to find out how it’s done.

Civil Engineer Cover Letter Opening

The opening paragraph of your cover letter is going to serve as the “who am I and what am I doing here” paragraph.

After your greeting and header, which for most civil engineering positions should be kept formal to set the tone for your letter, you’ll use the first sentence of your first paragraph to introduce yourself. Give a general introduction, be sure to clearly state your intent to apply to the position you’re applying to, and include a small piece of info about who you are.

It’s crucial that you state clearly upfront the specific position you’re applying to as, at the end of the day, that’s the entire reason you’re writing this letter at all. Your interest in this exact position is an important point that you want to land, and have the hiring manager remember.

In your first paragraph, you can also mention briefly how you found out about this position. This may not be relevant though if it’s obvious where you found the position, such as applying directly through job boards.

However, If it’s relevant and you have a good reason to do so, you can even go into some detail about your experience with this organization, and how you found this specific position. If any mutual contacts or inside employees referred you, you can mention that for some insider support .

Perhaps the most important tip is to remember that your opening is where you draw in the hiring manager and entice them to read on. Avoid boring, or generic language like “I am writing to apply to…” and try to mix it up while still staying relevant and focused. Civil engineering positions will involve some writing, so show off your writing prowess in the first paragraph.

Here’s an example of how a civil engineer cover letter might start, after the greeting:

“As a Civil Engineer working within the private sector for almost 9 years, I was excited to come across the open Civil Engineer position at Schimmel Inc. During my years of work, I have become a master of engineering design and land development design. I have managed and overseen over 100 shopping mall and retail store construction projects, and I’m eager to bring this expertise to Schimmel Inc.’s latest project.”

Search For Civil Engineer Jobs

Civil engineer cover letter body.

The body paragraph or paragraphs are going to be your space to explore the details of why you are the perfect candidate for this position. As a civil engineer, you already know that confidence is key. So bring confidence in your work life and experience.

At the core of your cover letter is the chance to detail and explain your skills and experience. The way you choose to describe what it is you’ve done and the knowledge you hold can have a big impact on how others view your experience.

As much as you are able, re-state the requirements and qualifications listed in the job posting, and explain how you align with these. Try to use the exact language the employer used in their posting to ensure that your application doesn’t get passed over by hiring managers looking for keywords, or any kind of software they may be screening applicants with.

However, you don’t want to put every single thing you’ve done or learned in your cover letter, that’s what your attached resume and other documents are for. The cover letter serves as a highlight reel of your biggest engineering achievements as they relate to the job posting. If they need or want any further information, they will contact you.

At the end of the day, the organization has a need and they are looking for someone who can help fulfill this need for them. Focus on the organization, why they’re great, and how you can help them be even greater.

When it comes to civil engineering cover letters, you’ll typically focus on technical skills and quantifiable projects. It’s not likely that you’ll be using your letter to dig deeply into your values and story as a way of creating commonalities between yourself and the organization, but it is possible for organizations you have a strong passion for.

Don’t be afraid to flatter the organization and mention why you admire them or what makes them a great place of work. Just don’t go over the top with praise.

Here’s an example of what the body paragraphs of your civil engineer cover letter may look like:

“In my current position at Schuster-Grady, I ensure that each phase of our construction projects goes above and beyond quality and efficiency standards. I have analyzed long-range plans, optimized construction costs, and tested building materials for 57 unique construction projects. In prior positions, I have also become highly skilled at streamlining processes with AutoCAD and Civil 3D. I know that Schimmel Inc. is looking for a skilled planner , manager, and designer for the upcoming project, and I am excited to offer these skills to the position. Every one of my retail projects remains infrastructurally sound to this day due to my consistent work ethic, something I would love to bring to Schimmel Inc.’s consistent reputation.”

Civil Engineer Cover Letter Closing Lines

Use the closing of your letter to tie everything together and explain how you’ll follow up. You’ve gotten past the hardest part, which is getting them to read the contents of your letter, so it's time to show your professionalism and good attitude with your closing paragraph. You know they are at least interested, so now you can put a little pressure on them to take the next steps.

In your final paragraph include a “call to action”, which is a request that you make for them to take some sort of action. This could be something like asking them to call to schedule a meeting , or telling them you look forward to hearing back from them. Anything that lets them know you are eagerly awaiting (and expecting) response without being over-confident or pushy.

Make sure to thank the hiring manager in your closing paragraph for taking the time to read your letter. They likely have a lot of reading to get through, and it shows some real politeness to recognize the labor they are putting in on your behalf and show gratitude for it.

After you’ve written the body of your letter, include an appropriate, professional, complimentary close to end things nicely. Attach any additional documents, and you’re ready to send them in. Civil engineers may want to attach portfolios detailing their projects.

A good closing for a civil engineer cover letter will look something like this:

“I would appreciate the chance to further discuss Schimmel Inc.’s upcoming construction project, and show how my prior successful projects will serve this position well. Please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can further discuss this position. Thank you for your time.”

Example of a Civil Engineer Cover Letter

When you put together all of the different parts and pieces of your civil engineer cover letter, it’ll look something like this:

March 26, 2021 Edward Smith Schimmel Inc. 8631 Job St. Business, CA 93033 Dear Mr. Smith, As a Civil Engineer working within the private sector for almost 9 years, I was excited to come across the open Civil Engineer position at Schimmel Inc. The Significance of a Cover Letter

A cover letter is not just a 400-word document that you add to your job application documents. Instead, you should have it with you when you apply for the engineering position. The letter helps to highlight your skills and experience, which aids in convincing your potential employer that you are a qualified candidate for the job.

It is also a personal yet professional way of explaining to the hiring manager the abilities, attributes, and personality that make you a great civil engineer. It is meant to introduce you; hence, making it easier for you to land an interview. The best way is to structure your cover letter in a way that tells the hiring manager a story as you are having a face-to-face conversation with them.

Writing a Cover Letter for a Civil Engineer Job

Just like your line of work requires and observes a proper structure, so does writing a cover letter. You will need to follow the step-by-step guide provided below to ensure you write a proper and effective one to apply for the civil engineering job.

The essential information includes:

The first part of the letter is the header, and it contains the information mentioned below. The header is meant to provide your potential employer with your contact details to make it easier to reach you.

By following the proper format given below, you will be able to grab the hiring manager’s attention from the start:

  • Date: You must include the date when you send the letter for official purposes.
  • Your name and contact details : You should also include your full official name and your contact information.
  • Recipient’s name and contact details: Apart from your details as the sender, you should also include the name and contact information of the letter’s recipient.
  • Subject of the letter: This is like the title. It should be brief and clearly state the letter’s purpose, i.e., applying for a civil engineering job.

The letter should have an official greeting or salutation like “Dear.” This greeting makes the letter professional and sounds respectful to the letter’s recipient. The best way to write the greeting is “Dear Mr. /Ms. /Mrs. (Last Name).”

You can either address the recipient by their first or last name. However, only use their first name if you know them closely. Ensure that you try and find out the hiring manager’s name, as it shows that you pay attention to details, helps to set a proper tone, and increases the chances of getting an interview.

Introduction

When it comes to the introduction part, try to focus on grasping the recipient’s attention. The introduction is all about introducing yourself, mentioning that you are applying for this job, and including information that presents you as a qualified candidate for the job.

You need to have an introduction, as it is meant to inform the hiring manager of your interest in being a civil engineer at their company or field. Therefore, the introduction should capture your background, passion, and what encourages you to look for this job.

For the body paragraphs, you should focus on the vision and projects you have once you get hired and how you plan to execute them. Again, try to focus on how you will benefit the company and how the company will benefit you. The body, or middle section, is also where you expound on your skills, experience, and qualifications.

Experience details

It is very important to add job experience to your cover letter, which will increase your chances of getting hired. You will need to share your experience details with the hiring manager to convince them of your expertise.

The best way to achieve this as a job candidate is by focusing on your work record. For example, mention all the places you have worked before and include the number of years you spent working there. Also, focus on the achievements and projects you had during those periods. In this case, ensure you use numbers and facts to explain your achievements.

Ensure that you also include the challenges and hardships you faced. As you explain these challenges, always include how you overcame them and successfully achieved your goals. The best way is to use a story to share your experience details.

Qualification overview

You also need to include your academic qualifications. As mentioned earlier, a candidate looking for a civil engineering job needs to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

It is also best to mention any other academic achievements and internships you had while in school. Having a professional license is also essential and should be included.

Highlight your technical skills

The final part of the body paragraph highlights your technical and soft skills. Again, a hiring manager needs to know that they are dealing with a qualified individual and a deserving candidate for the job.

That is why, in your cover letter, you will need to mention all your skills. For technical skills, you can mention skills like developing blueprints, technical plans, and models, Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook), ArcGIS, Civil 3D, MathWorks MATLAB, HEC-HMS, and Geographic Information System (GIS software.

You will also need to highlight your soft skills, including time management skills, problem-solving skills, leadership skills, communication and non-verbal skills, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and project planning.

This is the final part of the cover letter. It is meant to inform your potential employer why you are the best and most suitable candidate for the job while thanking them and requesting an interview.

Below is the information you should include:

Thank the recipient

After you make your last statement about how and why you are the most suitable job applicant, go ahead and thank the recipient for their time. Appreciate them for reading your letter to maintain courtesy and remain professional.

Call to action

You also need to indicate a call to action. Your call of action is meant to inform the recipient that you are waiting for their response. You can also suggest or request an interview.

The last part is to sign off using phrases like “Sincerely” or “Best regards.” These phrases are polite and professional, as required in an official letter.

Your signature

Remember to include your name and your signature. It is a formal way of ending your letter.

As you write and format your cover letter, keep in mind how you formatted your résumé. These two documents should have similar styles to show that you are professional, coherent, and consistent. Therefore, ensure you use the same font, font sizes, and formatting styles you used in your résumé.

How do I compile?

Remember to show your professional side. An engineering cover letter is technical, but you must remember that the hiring manager is a human being whom you must convince using your personality. Therefore, ensure you maintain both a rational and emotional tone.

Hiring managers will be more interested in hiring you if they understand your technical skills and passion for being a civil engineer. Therefore, as you write the cover letter intending to secure the job, make sure you establish a balance between your personality and expertise as you compile all the needed information.

Do’s and Don’ts

Whether you are applying in the private or government sector, remember and follow the essential elements to write a compelling and convincing cover letter for a civil engineering job.

Here are some tips that you should observe and follow:

Consider the letter as a sales pitch

Write your cover letter as you prepare a sales pitch. That means that you should make it enjoyable in a way that will grasp their attention from beginning to end. Focus on why the company should hire you, how you would benefit if hired, and the qualifications you have that make you an excellent candidate.

Research the company properly

You also need to express your passion for the company you are applying to, which is only possible if you have done your research. Ensure that you find out about the job, the person in charge of hiring you, and any other relevant information about the company. You can also research the company’s culture by looking at its website. This way, you will be able to shape your cover letter to suit the company’s expectations.

Show your dedication

Try to find out more about the company, as that will also attract the attention and interest of the hiring manager. Show the hiring manager that you are a dedicated individual and will benefit the company by creating a link between your skills, expertise, and qualifications and the company’s operations and goals.

Use suitable keywords

In the case of large companies, you will need to use the right keywords to ensure that those automated applicant tracking systems select you. These systems help hiring managers sort out piles of applications easier and faster. Without the right keywords, you are likely to be eliminated from the pool of potential job candidates.

Use data in numbers

You can demonstrate your expertise and describe your skills better if you give examples with numbers. In addition, providing your potential employer with statistics increases your chances of getting hired, as it shows them that you are beneficial to the company.

Your cover letter should be brief and straight to the point. Find a way to trim your details and compile your information into an effective one-page. It is all about grasping the hiring manager’s attention, and that can be effectively done by writing a brief and concise letter.

The following are some things that you need to avoid:

Typing and other mistakes

Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes. Such mistakes make you look unprofessional and might decrease your chances of getting hired.

Irrelevant information

Avoid including information that does not relate to the job you are applying for, and mention only relevant facts and details.

Use of fluff and generic words

Your cover letter should not have complex and useless wording. For example, professional and technical terms are expected; however, do not include phrases and terms that do not have a clear meaning.

Unattractive formatting

Ensure your letter is attractive and appealing to the reader by using correct formatting. With the correct formatting styles, you will be able to convince the hiring manager of your creativity and ability to design.

Mass mailings

Avoid using the same cover letter for different job applications. Every company has its own expectations, and that means you should customize your letter to suit that particular company instead of mass mailing. It should always be unique due to the competitive nature of the job.

As a candidate looking for a civil engineering job, the best way to increase your chances of getting hired in this competitive industry is by writing a cover letter. You will be able to pitch yourself and your experience to the hiring manager successfully. The best way to write one is by crafting it the same way you would prepare a sales pitch. It is all about convincing the recipient of the letter to hire you by showing them that you are a qualified job applicant. Use the template and sample given here as a guide.

How to address hiring managers in your entry level civil engineer cover letter greeting

Goodbye, "Dear Sir/Madam" or "To whom it may concern!"

The salutation of your entry level civil engineer cover letter is how you kick off your professional communication with the hiring managers.

And you want it to start off a bit more personalized and tailored, to catch the recruiters' attention.

Take the time to find out who's recruiting for the role (via LinkedIn or the company page).

If you have previously chatted or emailed the hiring managers, address them on a first or last name basis.

The alternative is a "Dear HR team" or "Dear Hiring Manger", but remember that a "Dear Ms. Simmons" or "Dear Simon," could get you farther ahead than an impersonal greeting.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Team,
  • Dear [Department] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear Ms./Mr. [Last Name],
  • Attention: [Position Title] Search Committee,
  • Dear Human Resources Director,

How to start your entry level civil engineer cover letter introduction

The opening paragraph of your entry level civil engineer cover letter can seem like a real enigma.

Where do you start writing ?

In your entry level civil engineer cover letter introduction, focus on yourself by stating what:

  • gets you motivated and excited about the role;
  • you like best about the company, from culture to awards.

Write no more than two sentences, which are both authentic and show your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

What comes next: your entry level civil engineer cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your entry level civil engineer cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

Remember that when writing your entry level civil engineer cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Closing paragraph basics: choose between a promise and a call to action

You've done all the hard work - congratulations! You've almost reached the end of your entry level civil engineer cover letter .

But how do you ensure recruiters, who have read your application this far, remember you?

Most entry level civil engineer professionals end their cover letter with a promise - hinting at their potential and what they plan on achieving if they're hired.

Another option would be to include a call for follow-up, where you remind recruiters that you're very interested in the opportunity (and look forward to hearing from them, soon).

Choose to close your entry level civil engineer cover letter in the way that best fits your personality.

Addressing limited to no experience in the entry level civil engineer cover letter

There's nothing to worry about if you lack professional experience .

Your entry level civil engineer cover letter could bridge the gaps in your professional history by focusing on what matters most to recruiters, that's either:

  • skills - focusing on transferable ones you've gained, thanks to your life experience (e.g. volunteering, certificates, etc.);
  • achievements - select the most relevant and noteworthy one from your history (e.g. education, projects, etc.);
  • motivation - describe how you envision your professional growth in the next up to five years, thanks to this opportunity.

  • Within the introduction, describe what you like best about the company in no more than two sentences;
  • Use your entry level civil engineer cover letter body to tell a story of your greatest achievement, backed up by job-relevant skills and technologies;
  • If you have no professional experience, be honest about it in your entry level civil engineer cover letter, but also write about your unique talents.

During my time at University, I have had the opportunity to work on a project in which we were tasked with designing a sustainable solution for the erosion of a local riverbank. Working closely with my team, we developed a plan that utilized environmentally friendly materials and techniques, ultimately winning first place in a regional competition. This experience not only solidified my dedication to civil engineering but also provided me with valuable teamwork and project management skills that I believe will be beneficial in this internship role.

In addition to my academic achievements, I have had the privilege of volunteering for a local non-profit organization focused on improving infrastructure in underserved communities. This experience has taught me the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by different communities and has further fueled my desire to make a positive impact through my work in civil engineering.

I am eager to join your team as a Civil Engineering Intern and contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for our communities. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further.

How to write an attachment letter (with samples)

Are you in the process of applying for an internship? You will need to submit a cover letter as part of your application, just as you would do when applying for a job. However, applying for internships is quite different, as chances are that you have limited or no experience and limited qualifications. The question of how to write an attachment letter without experience is one that most people applying for an internship have a hard time answering.

How to write an attachment letter (with samples)

Fortunately, even without experience, you can still be able to write a great cover letter the employers. If you are wondering how to write an attachment letter or you're looking for a sample letter that will guide you on how to draft yours, this guide is meant for you.

So, how do you format your application? Which style of writing is acceptable when addressing a potential employer?

How to write an application letter for employment

1. Use a formal writing style

Even though you are not getting paid, an attachment is just as important as an actual job. Therefore, you should place the same importance when applying for an attachment position. You should thus write your attachment placement request in a formal style, just like you would with a job application or any other business letter. At no instant in the application should you use informal style (the kind you would use when writing a personal letter).

2. Make your cover letter unique

For some people, an internship application is the first instance they will be writing a formal letter. With little experience writing such a letter, combined with the limited experience and qualifications, some of them might be tempted to use a sample letter right off the internet, change a few details to personalise it, and then send it to their prospective employers.

You should, however, avoid this tactic if you are looking to make an impression on the employers and increase your chances of getting an attachment. Instead, you should craft your cover letter from scratch and make it as unique to you as possible. Make sure that the tone of the writing, education experiences, skills, and everything else you include in the application describes you – and not hundreds of other people.

On top of that, you should make your attachment request is unique to each company you are applying to. Therefore, instead of writing one letter and changing a few details (such as the company name) you should consider writing a separate letter for each company. You can achieve this by researching each and every company you are applying to, more so the department you are looking to be placed. You should then include the skills, abilities, experiences, and qualifications that would make you a valuable asset to the company.

3. Place emphasis on your academic experience

How do I write a cover letter with no experience and impress the employers? This is something that most people have a hard time figuring out when it comes to internship application. Fortunately, there are several ways you can impress employers, even with limited work experience. One of these ways is by placing emphasis on your academic experience, which will help to show employers that you have valuable skills.

Therefore, instead of just listing your academic qualifications, go deep and show how they make you a valuable prospective employee. For example, you can list academic projects you have worked on or led, academic competitions you have engaged in, and so on.

READ ALSO: Different styles used to write letters

When adding your academic experience, you should also list all experiences, even outside your field of study. For example, you can include short courses, online courses, education boot camps, and other experiences you have. These will help to show employers that you are determined to do more than just the bare minimum.

4. Include your extracurricular experiences

Extracurricular experiences are another way you can be able to impress employers even with limited or no work experience. Therefore, you should include experiences such as sports participation, volunteer work, club membership, student government, university societies, art and music classes, hobbies such as photography, religious classes, paid and unpaid jobs (no matter how informal they were), and so on.

And just like with the academic experiences, you should do more than just listing them. Make sure you provide specific examples and explain how they make you a valuable prospective employee. For example, if listing debate club membership as an extracurricular activity, you can name debate competitions you participated in, how you contributed, and so on.

5. Include your skills and abilities

Skills and abilities are another way to impress employers when writing an attachment application letter. Good skills that can impress employers include communication skills, leadership skills, project management skills, computer skills, language skills, creative thinking skills, and so on.

When listing your skills and abilities, make sure to identify the strongest ones, and include the ones that will make you perfect for the company you are applying to. And just like with the other experiences, be sure to provide specific examples. For example, when listing leadership skills, you can mention the leadership roles you hold or have held in the past. You should also include certificates, awards, experiences, and other qualifications you have to support the skills you have listed

6. Proofread and edit the letter

Internship positions are usually very competitive, and as a result, employers have to use various methods to thin out the applicants. Any errors in your letter can thus result in you not getting the position you are applying for, regardless of how qualified you are. Therefore, before sending your letter, make sure that you thoroughly proofread it for any spelling and grammar mistakes it might have.

Other mistakes to look out for when proofreading and editing your letter include wordy sentences, complex phrases, and anything else that can make your letter hard to understand. In the end, your letter should be free of any grammatical errors, clear, brief, and to the point.

What is the format of an attachment application letter?

Writing an attachment letter

Nowadays, most companies use online applications for both jobs and internship applications. In some of these cases, applications include forms that you only have to fill and submit. However, there are still companies that prefer the traditional letter writing style. And even where an online application is used, you might find some companies requiring you to upload a cover letter. In these cases, you will need to write a letter and get the format right – formal business letter format.

  • Your name and address - Write your name, phone number, email address, and postal (or physical address) at the top right side of the page
  • Business/employee name and adress - Write the business name and the contact person/department (where your application letter will be received) at the left side of the page – below your name and personal information.
  • Salutation - salute the contact person, preferably with their name and in the format of “Dear Mr. X or Dear Mrs./Ms. Y”. Try researching the company you are applying to find the name of the contact person. In the event that you do not find the name, you can use the salutation “Dear Hiring Manager”. However, you should refrain from using “Dear Sir/Madam” and “To Whom It May Concern” as the former is very generic, while the latter might be taken to mean that you have no regards as to who receives your letter.
  • Subject line – this is where you state the reason for the letter
  • Introduction – start the letter with a brief introduction of yourself and why you are writing the letter (seeking internship position).
  • Body - Provide information about your program of study and other relevant academic experiences that relate to the position. You should also provide your skills, abilities, and extracurricular activities that make you perfect for the position
  • Conclusion – end the letter by thanking the hiring manager for their time. You can also include a contact number where you can be reached for interview scheduling.
  • Signature – complete the letter by signing, followed by your name.
