Kindergarten Math Problems, Worksheets & Games

Kindergarten Math Problems, Worksheets & Games

These kindergarten math problems will help you teach early math skills in a fun, interactive way! In this blog post, you'll find printable worksheets, task cards, and games to make math hands-on and engaging.

Kindergarten is one of the most critical years for young learners. This is where we build a strong foundation in number sense, teach the most basic operations, and give names to the shapes in the world around us.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Because this time is so important, we must use evidence-based instructional practices that genuinely support our students' growth while also providing them with exciting, engaging activities to get them thinking and moving! These kindergarten math problems and resources were designed to be easy for you to prepare, developmentally appropriate and engaging for kids, and aligned with your state or national instructional goals.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Although many of the resources are available in my shop or Freebee Library, they are all included as part of The Hive!  The Hive  is an all-in-one digital teacher planner with thousands of printable resources, videos, and interactive digital learning tools which you can schedule into your day or pull up at a moment's notice. It's teaching smarter, not harder!

If you're teaching primary math this year, you'll also love the mathematics learning programs we have created for K-2! You'll find carefully designed lesson plans with differentiation strategies, matching resources, and activities. Just log in, search for the skill you're covering, and use it instantly!

Sound dreamy? Try it for free today with our 7 day free trial!

Printable Kindergarten Math Problems & Activities

Our kindergarten kids have a lot of learning to do this year. These printable and interactive resources are the perfect tools to support them in that process.

Number Recognition

This is where it all starts! One of our first steps is to help our kindergarten students understand that each numeral represents a specific number of units. I recommend leaning heavily on manipulatives, like dominoes, bear counters, the place value chart, ten frames, dice, and more.

The more representations, the more deeply your students will understand how numbers work. The following printable kindergarten math worksheets are a great place to start!

Number Printable Worksheets - These print-and-go worksheets are perfect for kindergarten!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

There are several different levels, so you can make them more complex as students learn. They can even be used as play dough mats or tracing pages!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Number Match - There are four spaces on each numbered mat, and students find images matching each number from a bank of cards. I love these for small groups or independent practice!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Number Hexagons - These task cards are perfect for a math center or maths rotations! Just match the numeral with the corresponding image.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Number Match Ice Cream Game - In this game, the cones show the number, and students must find that number of scoops with different representations of the number. It's so helpful for consolidating both number identification skills and counting skills at the same time!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Swat the Fly Number Templates - This freebie is a fun, hands-on way to help students practice identifying numerals. I like to print these out and place them around the room, and have students say the name of the number as they swat it.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Get even more kindergarten number writing practice with these templates and activities! They're great for preschool, too.

One of the most important concepts young students learn is the idea of place value, which requires plenty of meaningful opportunities with number recognition and counting. Although many of the activities above can be used for counting, too, these ones focus on this specific skill.

Disappearing Digits - Kids fill in the missing numbers on these math charts. I like to put these in pocket sleeves to use them again and again!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Monster Eyes Counting - These free kindergarten math worksheets so much fun! Have your kids add the correct number of googly eyes to the monster bodies. They'll love arranging the eyes in different ways, which is a great way to practise those fine motor skills, too!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Build a Fence - Students line up the popsicle sticks in number order to complete the fence. It's simple, but it works!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

I Spy & Count   - Students will love playing I Spy and consolidating their early number skills with these I Spy and Count Mats!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Numbers Before & After   - This open-ended activity can be used to consolidate early number and counting skills, as students identify the number/s after a given number. Students roll a dice and write the 4 numbers that come after. You can further differentiate by the number of dice used, or the number of sides on the dice.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Simple Addition

We spend a lot of time focusing on addition skills in the early years, as this concept is the foundation of subtraction and multiplication in later years.

We have created units for every element of K-2 math in The Hive, so you can easily pull up any of the lesson plans, slides, games, videos, and printables to support your instruction any time you need them! There are also loads of digital learning tools for your maths lessons, such as digital counters, manipulatives, ten frames, place value charts and more.

The following activities are just some of the hundreds of activities included in The Hive's K-2 mathematics units.

Finger Addition 1-10 - The kindergarten worksheets are a great bridge between finger counting and using symbolic representations! They can even count along with their own hands.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Counting On Task Cards - These cards make it easy to practise counting on, which is one of many addition strategies which we teach to our kindergarten students.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Addition Towers - Give your students a pile of unifix cubes to solve each of the math problems. Since this task is open-ended, they'll naturally find several different ways to solve each problem. These would be wonderful for math talks!

Number Line Addition Task Cards - The number line is such a useful concept to teach early on, especially as it connects to telling time and measurement later on. These free task cards use the jump strategy to practise addition up to 20.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Our Hive members can also use our digital number line to explicitly teach this concept too!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Addition Stories - These open-ended worksheets are one of my favourite activities! Kids can use these kindergarten worksheets as a backdrop to create their own story problems or you can fill out the sheet yourself and see how many different word problems your students can come up with based on the image.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

This would be great for a daily math discussion! You can even  have your student of the day create their own custom scene.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Part Part Whole Activities

Students create different totals using the legs of characters from the book. See if they can find different ways to make the same total!  Print multiple sets of the picture cards for students to combine to create different totals:

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Number Bond Activities

Students can demonstrate their understanding of number bonds to 5, 10 and 20 with these differentiated number bond task cards.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Simple Subtraction

Once students understand addition as combining parts to find the whole, they're ready for subtraction. These highly visual examples will give them great practice!

Takeaway Trash - This game highlights the idea that subtraction is about taking numbers apart. Students must "sweep" the subtracted part into the recycling bin to see what's left. Great for stations!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Finger Subtraction Templates - These templates are much cleaner than colouring on your fingers but achieve the same effect.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Hungry Shark Subtraction Mats - I love that these sheets model how to complete subtraction word problems and use the horizontal form at the same time. The repetition will really help reinforce these skills!

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Counter Subtraction - The counters are a great next step after counting with fingers. The counters are still visual, but they're a little more abstract. Since these worksheets are open-ended, they can be used over and over with different numbers.

KINDERGARTEN MATH PROBLEM SOLVING

Organize your routines to promote plenty of kindergarten math problem solving.

It’ll help children make sense of math concepts as they solve problems using real life objects and everyday situations that they can relate to.

When children learn to recognize a problem, try a few problem solving strategies, suggest a variety of solutions to solve the problem, and finally, test their ideas. They will gain confidence and have a chance to use skills that they have learned previously.

Keep Math Problem Solving Activities Simple

kindergarten_problem_solving

  • Jars from pasta sauce and other products work well also.
  • Ask parents to save clean jar lids that are large enough to hold 3 one-inch blocks. Check there are no sharp edges.
  • Cups are too deep for the following activities as the children cannot easily see how many counters they have put into each cup.

Literature based problem solving games…

kindergarten_problem_soving_Rabbit

Game – Birthday party across the river

Set up the problem by reading a book such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

After reading it, talk about:

  • What was the little girl’s problem?
  • What did she do to solve it?
  • How did Mr. Rabbit help?
  • How did they solve the problem?

Boats and River Game

  • Boats – One jar lid per child (such as the ones that pasta sauce comes in) that hold 3 one-inch Unifix™ cubes. The lids represent the boats.
  • Presents – Ten one-inch Unifix™ cubes for each student. These represent the presents. Vary the number of blocks, depending on the children’s abilities.
  • 1/2 sheet of blue construction paper cut lengthwise – this is the river
  • Recording sheet and pencils
  • Introduce the problem – Tell your students that you are pretending that all ten of Mr. Rabbit’s  presents (cubes) have to get across the river for a birthday party. The presents will have to go in the boats (jar lids) but can not be stacked on top of each other or they will fall in the water. Only 3 presents can fit into a boat but all the presents have to get to the party.
  • How many trips across the river does your boat need to take?
  • Each child loads their boat with 3 cubes and take them across the river then unloads their boat
  • Children record each trip with a tally line.
  • Vary the number of blocks with each game

Sharing type problem solving …

  • Counters, blocks or crackers
  • Small paper plates – 4 per child
  • Lids and blocks as above

Focus on different ways of solving the problems. Vary the games and materials each time:

  • Game #1 – Say to the children – “You have 4 plates, one for each friend, and 12 crackers. How can you make sure that all your friends get the same number of crackers?”
  • Game #2 – Each child gets 4 lids and 12 blocks. “How you can put the blocks into the lids so all the lids have the same number of blocks?”
  • Game #3 – Each child gets 2 plates. Goldfish type crackers are in bowls near the children. “How can we figure out how many crackers we will need if each plate has 10 crackers?”

Seating & PE equipment type kindergarten problem solving …

One group of children watches while the other group acts out the problem.

Prompt with suggestions as necessary. E.G. How could we figure that out? All the children can contribute ideas to solve these types of problems.

#1 – Four children can sit around each table. We have 12 children. How can we figure out how many tables we need so everybody can sit down?

#2 – We have 6 balls and 12 children. How can we share the balls so all the children get to play with the same number of balls?

#3 – This group has 4 children. If each child jumps 3 times, how can we keep track of how many jumps will they jump all together?

Extra tips for educators

Tip – Save these types of problems for after the children have had plenty of activity and are ready to sit and rest for a while.

Spatial type problem solving

  • Pattern blocks

Ask questions such as the ones below.

1. How many ways can you make a bird (or flower or star…) using only 5 pattern blocks? Children spend 5 minutes making birds. Have them count the number of pattern blocks in each bird as they sometimes get carried away and end up making a bird with many more blocks!

kindergarten_math_problem_solving

2. Show me how you can make 3 different stars can with your pattern blocks?

kindergarten_math_problem_solving

Recording problem solving activities

Prompt students to record the results of most activities, even if they are only able to make a simple picture.

problem_solving_bird

Many opportunities for math problem solving will arise in a regular preschool or kindergarten day.

  • Keep problem solving simple and age appropriate
  • Focus on problems that have open-ended results
  • If children get frustrated, give them the option of leaving the problem and coming back to it later

Therefore, if you are also looking forward to helping your kid fall in love with math, try out the kindergarten math activities we’ve picked.

15 Best Math Activities for Kindergarten

A hand tracing the shape of zero

1. Shape Hunt

The first math activity for kindergarten is a shape hunt. The agenda of this activity is to help kids learn different shapes and their names. This is one of the most fun hands-on math activities for kindergarten, perfect for children who find it difficult to remember shapes. It also forms a foundation for geometry, which kids encounter in higher grades.

What you’ll need

For this activity, you will need colored cutouts of different shapes and a notebook.

You can hold a cutout of any shape and tell your child the name of that particular shape. Then, ask your kid to color or mark the shape in their notebooks.

2. Color Matching

Color matching is one of the most effective activities for teaching counting to your little one. The bonus in this activity is that your kid learns to count and memorizes the names of different colors effectively.

For this activity, you will need colorful balls and matching buckets.

Ask your kid to match the colors and put balls in the bucket while counting them. For example, if there are five red balls. Then, ask the child to put it in the red bucket while counting the balls.

3. Button Counting

The button counting game is one of the most fun activities for kindergarten. This activity helps improve a kid’s analytical skills from a young age.

Colorful buttons of different shapes and cups of different colors with cutouts have a width that allows the buttons to pass through.

Ask the child to sort the buttons according to color and put each pile into the cups that match the color. Ensure the child notes down the number of buttons while putting them inside the cups.

4. One Bowl Two Fish

This math activity is full of fun as it involves using thinking skills. Also, this is the first step toward simplifying math problems. The core value of this activity is to teach kids to break numbers in various ways.

You will need an activity book or notebook with one bowl and two fish patterns.

Teach your kid to get the number five by doing 2 + 3 or 1 + 4. Make them practice this technique for different numbers. However, always begin with single-digit numbers having fewer combinations.

5. What Comes Next?

These math activities for kindergarten can be done very easily and help in testing children’s memory. The simple logic behind this activity is to check kids’ memory by asking them what comes next when counting.

Colorful cutouts of different numerals.

Arrange the cutouts of numbers in different orders and ask them what comes next. For example, put four or five numerals in front of your child and ask them what comes next in the order.

6. Stacking

Stacking is one of the finest fun math activities for kindergarten. It is very simple to do and, therefore, is one of the most preferred activities that most preschools add to their curriculum. The major aim of this activity is to improve the child’s analytical ability in a fun way.

Colorful blocks with different numbers written on them in bold.

Divide the kids into small groups and ask them to stack the cups while reading out the numbers written on them.

7. Number Hunt

Engaging your child in hunting numbers in newspapers is a fun math activity for kindergarten. This activity helps in increasing the thinking ability of kids and persuades them to think out of the box.

A newspaper or magazine and colored pencils

Say a random number and ask your child to search for it in the newspaper or magazine and circle it with their pencil.

8. Number Bingo

Number Bingo is next on our list of kindergarten Common-Core math activities. This activity is for those kids who have learned numerals up to 20 or 25.

A square board, pen markers, and colorful buttons

Take a board and cut it in the shape of a square. Next, write numbers randomly on it. Now, ask the kid to put the buttons on the number that has been read out.

9. Board Game

If you are looking for hands-on math activities that kindergarten students can do, then board games can be a good option. With the help of this game, kids can improve their identification skills and learn how to do simple mathematics.

Any board game with numbers printed on it and a dice

Ask the child to roll the die on the board and then make them move their token to the number that has appeared on the dice. For example, if the current position of your kid’s token is 4 and on rolling, they get 3. Then, help them in moving 3 spaces forward to 7.

10. Monster Eyes

Kids easily lose interest in anything they find boring. Therefore, the teachers have to regularly add an element of fun in online math activities for kindergarten. Monster eyes are one such activity that is fun-filled and promises to improve the kid’s observation skills.

A worksheet with drawings of monsters and small monster eyes.

Draw a monster in the child’s worksheet and write some numerals on the top or bottom. You can also include signs of addition or subtraction to make it more learning oriented. Now, ask the child to add the numerals and fill the activities with the number of eyes they have calculated.

11. Number Line

The main aim of this kindergarten math activity is to introduce mathematical operations, i.e., addition and subtraction on number lines in the most amusing way. Participating in this activity makes them grasp the basics of these operations easily.

A sheet of paper with printed numerals, small toy cars

Take the sheet and ask the learner to place their toy on any number, say 4. Now, direct them to add 2 to their current position, i.e., 4, and move the car to the number that is obtained as the sum.

12. Learning with Balloons

Learning math with balloons—isn’t that just one of the most fun-filled activities you have heard of? It’s a great activity to indulge in with your child while helping them learn to count.

Colorful balloons with different numerals written on them.

Hide the balloons in the room and ask the kid to find them. Next, ask the kid to read out the number aloud. Another way to indulge the kids in this activity is to read out a random number and then ask them to pick out the balloon matching the number.

13. Building Blocks

This super fun math activity for kindergarten helps the kid develop organizing skills. It is also helpful for those kids who struggle to remember the names of colors.

Different colored blocks

Ask your younger one to build a tower with a fixed number of blocks. For example, ask them to build a tower with five blocks.

14. Hopscotch

Colorful hopscotch pattern on a sidewalk

Hopscotch is one of the traditional games known to polish a child’s recognizing skills.

Colorful chalk, cutouts of shapes

Draw the hopscotch pattern on the floor and write numbers and shapes. Now, ask your kid to jump on a number and follow the directions.

15. Learn with Snowballs

The last in our kindergarten math activities list is learning with snowballs! This activity can be performed by the kid alone. Alternatively, you can also organize it as a friendly match. The major aim of this math activity is to improve your child’s counting and motor skills.

Paper or cotton balls and a bucket

Crumple the paper into the shape of a snowball or cotton ball. Read out a random number, say 5, and ask the kid to throw the same snowballs in the bucket until the count goes to 5.

Helpful Tips to Make Math Activities Fun for Kindergartners

Small child playing with building blocks

Whenever we talk about kids’ activities , the materials must be colorful and engaging, as kids tend to lose interest easily.

Now, as you have learned about the top fun math activities for kindergarten. Let us learn how you can encourage your child to participate regularly.

  • Help your child perceive math as not complex; it is as easy as any other subject. For this, you can always talk to them about your learning days and ways you made math a very easy subject for yourself.
  • Include math in their everyday life. For example, ask them to do simple calculations while buying groceries. In this way, they can relate to the concepts more easily.
  • Introduce your child to visual learning. Numerous online math activities for kindergarten present these concepts and activities visually, thus giving it a new twist.
  • Use art to teach math to your kid. Take the help of paintings or sculpting such that they can grasp the concepts easily.
  • The last tip to encourage your child to try out kindergarten math activities is positive support whenever they fail or are stuck somewhere.

5 kindergarten problem solving activities your kid will love.

problem solving activities kindergarten math

Want to Improve Your Child's Problem Solving Skills?

Enroll your child for the Atlas Mission – the ultimate learning companion for kids.

Ohhh, problem solving skills. It’s one of those, you know, really, super, important things that all kids are supposed to be learning, or else, they are doomed for life.

I mean, at thirty-one years old I still haven’t figured out how to keep things from spilling everywhere or how to make sure evil Legos aren’t out and about just waiting to deal those excruciating blows to my feet.

I know you’ve been there – i.e. stepped on a car and almost broke your back – and thought about throwing all the darned things in the trash.

But before you do that, here are 5 kindergarten problem solving activities for kids that will make you feel a little better about keeping them around… at least for a little bit longer.

1. Free Building Play

So after I resist the urge to whip into a crazy, toy-trashing whirlwind come across toys the kids have left out, I put them in a building box.

If you don’t have something similar, you can just let your little darling gather up any and all safe objects around the house he would like to use to build something with.

It can be anything. We have had conglomerations of Legos, boxes, wheels/fixtures from random, old pieces of furniture, PVC piping, etc. The point here is to foster open-mindedness… to see random objects in new ways.

Don’t be afraid to frame the problem for him to stretch those skills – “Oh, you built a house?  Wow!  What if more people needed to fit in it?” Or, just thinking out loud here, “What if Mommy needs a spa room?”

Pro Tip: Help Your Child Become Better at Problem Solving

Enroll your child for the Atlas Mission and let your child play with this award-winning educational program. Your child will become better at problem solving without even realizing it!

2. Rolling Dice

One of my other favorite things to step on in dark hallways.

Kids love to roll dice. I would just feel like a jerk if I didn’t say there are a ton of games kids make up and play with dice that are great for problem solving and general math skills, so let them play freely with them.

Here is one of the best ones I’ve found specifically for problem solving skills.

First, write down a few categories of things – colors, animals, places, people, etc. – on some index cards, or if you are always missing cool school supplies like index cards, card-sized pieces of paper will do just fine. Put them in stack face-down between you and your kid.

Now, for the fun part! Tell your kid to draw a card and roll the die – probably just one die for this game… really… you don’t want any nervous breakdowns here.

He has to think of that number of things that fit into the category he drew. So if he drew the card “Animals” and rolled a three, he might say, “hippo, dog, and rooster.”

This encourages a different kind of open-mindedness that is solution-oriented, rather than going in all directions.

3. Build a Racetrack

Yep, I know. It’s always right in the middle of the way, right? Well, stuff down that gut reaction to “accidentally” knock it over (totally kidding, I know you would never do that, right? Right? :-)), and let them build it (safely) however they want.

After they are done racing their cars down it for a bit, encourage them to actually talk about what they like and dislike about the track.

And then let them build it again… and again. Wait! Don’t run yet – there’s a good reason, promise!  While building open-mindedness is a vital first step, experimentation is just as important.

This is where they learn to make predictions and test them to make adjustments.

4. Make a Mosaic

If your brain is frazzled just reading about the previous three activities, this one’s for you! If you already have some of those math pattern/shape blocks, this is the easiest (though it might not get the Legos off the floor, sorry!).

Just give your little one a prompt for a picture, and let her go to town creating it with the pattern blocks. Boats, flowers, houses, and monsters are all good prompts for kindergarteners.

If you don’t have pattern blocks or you want a more permanent creation, you can cut shapes out of construction paper. If you can match the typical pattern block color/shape, it will familiarize your kid with them if she hasn’t seen them in school yet.

Then, go on the same way, letting her create to her heart’s content, finishing with glue if she wishes!

This is about helping her understand that not only are there multiple options to consider when solving a problem, but also sometimes there are actually multiple possible solutions.

5. Roleplaying

Don’t neglect the need to practice problem solving skills for social situations. Most of the problems adults deal with are ones that involve some social aspect, after all. So bust out those costumes (or sheets, old curtains, whatever), and do some roleplaying.

If your kid has a bent for imaginative play, you might be able to just follow along with her plot and ask questions at the right moments, but otherwise, you might have to search your inner-child for a problem that your kid would be interested in enough to make the play effective.

“I want to have a tea party for all the little children in the land, but I don’t know how to do it. What do you think we should do first?”

“There’s a dragon in a cave nearby, and everyone is afraid he might hurt them. What do you think we should do first?”

What? My inner-child is pretty typical, don’t judge!

So put your mind (and feet!) at rest – these kindergarten problem solving activities can keep kids thinking for hours over a variety of different problem solving situations.

It’s even more awesome if brothers, sisters, or friends can participate, so you can just keep an ear on things… while eating chocolate away from prying eyes. (Hey! A problem I did solve!)

Kate Douglass, a statistics graduate student and the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year in two Olympic swimming events, has always been good with numbers. But before she enrolled at the University of Virginia, she never considered that swimming itself was a math problem that she could try to solve.

That changed when she realized the concepts she was studying in the classroom could be used in her sport. These days, Douglass often gets into the pool while wearing a belt that holds an accelerometer, the same device found in smartphones and fitness watches. As she swims, the sensor measures her movement in three spatial directions 512 times per second.

“That’s helped me to figure out areas of my stroke where I can be more efficient,” said Douglass, 22. So far, so good: On Saturday, she began a busy Olympics schedule by winning a silver medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

The swimmers at the Paris Olympics all have the same challenge: to swim as fast as they can by moving through the water in a way that maximizes the force propelling them toward the finish line, while minimizing the force that slows them down. Elite swimmers use familiar tricks to reduce the resistance known as drag, like shaving before big meets and wearing swimsuits made from the same material as Formula 1 racing cars.

Dr. Ken Ono, in a blue print shirt, Todd DeSorbo, in a Virginia Cavaliers T-shirt, and Kate Douglass, with wet hair and wearing a hoodie, talking on the deck of an indoor pool.

Though the sport has long relied on a swimmer’s feel in the water or a coach’s eye from the pool deck, Douglass and several of her U.S. Olympic teammates are exploring a new competitive frontier. Under the direction of a Virginia mathematics professor, Dr. Ken Ono, they are measuring and analyzing the forces they create as they swim, to optimize the way they move through the water. Details as seemingly small as Douglass’s head position in her underwater breaststroke pullout, or how her left hand enters the water on her backstroke, have been focal points as she has worked to trim the hundredths of a second that make the difference between medals in the sport.
