2019 Cricket World Cup

When was the game of cricket invented?

Cricket is believed to have begun possibly as early as the 13th century as a game in which country boys bowled at a tree stump or the hurdle gate into a sheep pen.

The first Test match was played between Australia and England in Melbourne in 1877, with Australia winning. When Australia again won at the Oval at Kennington, London, in 1882, the Sporting Times printed an obituary notice announcing that English cricket would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia, thus creating the “play for the Ashes.”

When was the International Women’s Cricket Council formed?

The International Women’s Cricket Council was formed in 1958 by Australia, England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and South Africa, and later included India, Denmark, and several West Indian islands.

How many players are there on a cricket team?

Cricket is played with a bat and ball and involves two competing sides (teams) of 11 players. As there are 11 players on a team and 2 of them must be the bowler and wicketkeeper, only 9 other positions can be occupied at any one time.

cricket , England ’s national summer sport, which is now played throughout the world, particularly in Australia , India , Pakistan , the West Indies , and the British Isles .

presentation of cricket games

Cricket is played with a bat and ball and involves two competing sides (teams) of 11 players. The field is oval with a rectangular area in the middle, known as the pitch , that is 22 yards (20.12 metres) by 10 feet (3.04 metres) wide. Two sets of three sticks, called wickets , are set in the ground at each end of the pitch. Across the top of each wicket lie horizontal pieces called bails. The sides take turns at batting and bowling (pitching); each turn is called an “innings” (always plural). Sides have one or two innings each, depending on the prearranged duration of the match, the object being to score the most runs. The bowlers, delivering the ball with a straight arm, try to break (hit) the wicket with the ball so that the bails fall. This is one of several ways that the batsman is dismissed, or put out. A bowler delivers six balls at one wicket (thus completing an “over”), then a different player from his side bowls six balls to the opposite wicket. The batting side defends its wicket.

There are two batsman up at a time, and the batsman being bowled to (the striker) tries to hit the ball away from the wicket. A hit may be defensive or offensive. A defensive hit may protect the wicket but leave the batsmen no time to run to the opposite wicket. In that case the batsmen need not run, and play will resume with another bowl. If the batsman can make an offensive hit, he and the second batsman (the nonstriker) at the other wicket change places. Each time both batsmen can reach the opposite wicket, one run is scored. Providing they have enough time without being caught out and dismissed, the batsmen may continue to cross back and forth between the wickets, earning an additional run for each time both reach the opposite side. There is an outside boundary around the cricket field. A ball hit to or beyond the boundary scores four points if it hits the ground and then reaches the boundary, six points if it reaches the boundary from the air (a fly ball). The team with the highest number of runs wins a match. Should both teams be unable to complete their number of innings before the time allotted , the match is declared a draw. Scores in the hundreds are common in cricket.

Matches in cricket can range from informal weekend afternoon encounters on village greens to top-level international contests spread over five days in Test matches and played by leading professional players in grand stadiums.

Discovering cricket: From the “Timeless Test” to T20

Cricket is believed to have begun possibly as early as the 13th century as a game in which country boys bowled at a tree stump or at the hurdle gate into a sheep pen. This gate consisted of two uprights and a crossbar resting on the slotted tops; the crossbar was called a bail and the entire gate a wicket . The fact that the bail could be dislodged when the wicket was struck made this preferable to the stump , which name was later applied to the hurdle uprights. Early manuscripts differ about the size of the wicket, which acquired a third stump in the 1770s, but by 1706 the pitch—the area between the wickets—was 22 yards long.

The ball , once presumably a stone, has remained much the same since the 17th century. Its modern weight of between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces (156 and 163 grams) was established in 1774.

The primitive bat was no doubt a shaped branch of a tree, resembling a modern hockey stick but considerably longer and heavier. The change to a straight bat was made to defend against length bowling, which had evolved with cricketers in Hambledon, a small village in southern England. The bat was shortened in the handle and straightened and broadened in the blade, which led to forward play, driving, and cutting . As bowling technique was not very advanced during this period, batting dominated bowling through the 18th century.

The earliest reference to an 11-a-side match, played in Sussex for a stake of 50 guineas, dates from 1697. In 1709 Kent met Surrey in the first recorded intercounty match at Dartford , and it is probable that about this time a code of laws (rules) existed for the conduct of the game, although the earliest known version of such rules is dated 1744. Sources suggest that cricket was limited to the southern counties of England during the early 18th century, but its popularity grew and eventually spread to London , notably to the Artillery Ground, Finsbury, which saw a famous match between Kent and All-England in 1744. Heavy betting and disorderly crowds were common at matches.

The aforementioned Hambledon Club, playing in Hampshire on Broadhalfpenny Down, was the predominant cricket force in the second half of the 18th century before the rise of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London. Formed from a cricket club that played at White Conduit Fields, the club moved to Lord’s Cricket Ground in St. Marylebone borough in 1787 and became the MCC and in the following year published its first revised code of laws. Lord’s, which was named after its founder, Thomas Lord, has had three locations over its history. Moving to the current ground in St. John’s Wood in 1814, Lord’s became the headquarters of world cricket.

In 1836 the first match of North counties versus South counties was played, providing clear evidence of the spread of cricket. In 1846 the All-England XI, founded by William Clarke of Nottingham , began touring the country, and from 1852, when some of the leading professionals (including John Wisden, who later compiled the first of the famous Wisden almanacs on cricketing) seceded to form the United All-England XI, these two teams monopolized the best cricket talent until the rise of county cricket. They supplied the players for the first English touring team overseas in 1859.

Having originated in south-east England, it became the country's national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. International matches have been played since 1844 and Test cricket began, retrospectively recognised, in 1877.v

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat (and running between the wickets), while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat and before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. When ten batters have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.

Where did cricket originate ?

How did cricket start ?

Cricket was introduced to North America via the English colonies as early as the 17th century, and in the 18th century it arrived in other parts of the globe. ... It arrived in Australia almost as soon as colonisation began in 1788 and the sport reached New Zealand and South Africa in the early years of the 19th century.

Cricket became popular in India and the West Indies because of its colonial background. British imperial officials used it as a symbol of racial and social superiority. They did not popularise the game for the masses. For the colonised, playing cricket implied being the racial equals of the British.

CRICKET 101

A formal game of cricket can last anything from an afternoon to several days. ... the cricket field consists of a large circular or oval-shaped grassy ground. ... – powerpoint ppt presentation.

  • Cricket is a team sport for two teams of eleven players each. A formal game of cricket can last anything from an afternoon to several days.
  • Although the game play and rules are very different, the basic concept of cricket is similar to that of baseball. Teams bat in successive innings and attempt to score runs, while the opposing team fields and attempts to bring an end to the batting team's innings. After each team has batted an equal number of innings the team with the most runs wins.
  • Cricket Ball
  • Hard, cork and string ball, covered with leather.
  • Cricket Bat
  • Blade made of willow, flat on one side, humped on the other for strength.
  • There are two wickets - wooden structures made up of a set of three stumps topped by a pair of bails.
  • Three wooden posts, 25 millimetres (1 inch) in diameter and 813 millimetres (32 inches) high. They have have spikes extending from their bottom end and are hammered into the ground in an evenly spaced row, with the outside edges of the outermost stumps 228 millimetres (9 inches) apart. This means they are just close enough together that a cricket ball cannot pass between them.
  • Two wooden crosspieces which sit in grooves atop the adjacent pairs of stumps.
  • Protective Gear
  • Pads, gloves, helmet, etc for batsmen to wear to prevent injury when struck by the ball.
  • Leather, usually with spiked soles for grip on the grass.
  • Long pants, shirt (long or short sleeved depending on the weather), possibly a sleeveless or long-sleeved woollen pullover in cold weather. For games played with a red ball, the clothing must be white or cream. With a white ball, players usually wear uniforms in solid team colours. Add a hat or cap to keep the sun off. There are no regulations regarding identifying marks or numbers on clothing.
  • The game is played in accordance with 42 laws of cricket, which have been developed by the Marylebone Cricket Club (London) in discussion with the main cricketing nations.
  • Other rules supplement the main laws and change them to deal with different circumstances. In particular, there are a number of modifications to the playing structure and fielding position rules that apply to one innings games that are restricted to a set number of fair deliveries.
  • A team consists of eleven players. Depending on his primary skills, a player may be classified as a specialist batsman or bowler. A balanced team usually has five or six specialist batsmen and four or five specialist bowlers. Teams nearly always include a specialist wicket-keeper because of the importance of this fielding position.
  • Two on-field umpires preside over a match. One umpire will stand behind the wicket at the end from which the ball is bowled, and adjudicate on most decisions. The other will stand near the fielding position called square leg, which offers a side view of the batsman, and assist on decisions for which he has a better view. In some professional matches, they may refer a decision to an off-field 'third' umpire, who has the assistance of television replays. In international matches an off-field match referee ensures that play is within the laws of cricket and the spirit of the game.
  • The team batting always has two batsmen on the field. One batsman, known as the striker, faces and plays the balls bowled by the bowler. His partner stands at the bowling end and is known as the non-striker.
  • The fielding team has all eleven of its players on the ground, and at any particular time, one of these will be the bowler. The player designated as bowler must change after every over. The wicket-keeper, who generally acts in that role for the whole match, stands or crouches behind the wicket at the batting end. The captain of the fielding team spreads his remaining nine players the fielders around the ground to cover most of the area. Their placement may vary dramatically depending on strategy. Each position on the field has a unique label.
  • The different types of shots a batsman can play are described by names
  • Block - A defensive shot played with the bat vertical and angled down at the front, intended to stop the ball and drop it down quickly on to the pitch in front of the batsman.
  • Drive - An offensive shot played with the bat sweeping down through the vertical. The ball travels swiftly along the ground in front of the striker. A drive can be an on drive, straight drive, off drive, or cover drive, depending in which direction it goes.
  • Cut - A shot played with the bat close to horizontal, which hits the ball somewhere in the arc between cover and gully.
  • Edge, or Glance - A shot played off the bat at a glancing angle, through the slips area.
  • Leg Glance - A shot played at a glancing angle behind the legs, so that it goes in the direction of fine leg.
  • Pull - A horizontal bat shot which pulls the ball around the batsman into the square leg area.
  • Sweep - Like a pull shot, except played with the backmost knee on the ground, so as to hit balls which bounce low.
  • Hook - Like a pull shot, but played to a bouncer and intended to hit the ball high in the air over square leg - hopefully for six runs.
  • French Cut - An attempt at a cut shot which hits the bottom edge of the bat and goes into the area behind square leg.
  • WICKET KEEPER
  • SECOND SLIP
  • EXTRA COVER
  • DEEP BACKWARD SQUARE

Cricket rights cash fight threatens lifeblood of the game

By daniel brettig, save articles for later.

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.

In The Candidate , Robert Redford's darkly satirical film about an ambitious young politician running for the United States Senate, the last line resonates more than most.

Upon winning his seat, Redford's character Bill McKay turns to his campaign manager with a panicked expression and asks, "What do we do now?"

The campaign to replace the International Cricket Council chair Greg Barclay with the BCCI secretary Jay Shah had a similar ring. It has been much more a matter of gaining power than a case of thinking carefully about how to wield it.

Shah is on the fast track to a political career in India, following his father Amit Shah, Narendra Modi’s right-hand man and a pillar of the BJP party that rules the world’s most populous nation. Having served all but a year of his maximum term at the BCCI, Shah needed another post. The ICC’s chair, previously occupied by other Indian figures such as Jagmohan Dalmiya, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar, is it.

But in the time when numerous national boards, including Cricket Australia, and its chair Mike Baird, have manoeuvred to prepare the ground for Barclay’s resignation and Shah’s election, the cricket world has been in a state of increasing ferment.

As revealed by this masthead , the ICC’s $US3 billion broadcast partner Star is chasing a discount of up to 50 per cent of that fee, a scenario of concern for India, England and Australia but absolutely life-threatening for the likes of Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies.

While their shares of that money, divvied up by the ICC last year, are minuscule next to the 40 per cent claimed proudly by Shah and India, they are the lifeblood of cricket nations that can no longer fetch big fees for bilateral tours, including those by India, Australia or England.

ICC distributions are the bedrock of those countries' cricket business models, the spinal funding reliably baked into their budgets for the next four years and used for all manner of key costs from paying players to upgrading facilities.

As one example, Pakistan’s board is using part of its ICC share to renovate its stadiums ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy, the first global event they have hosted in decades. For the West Indies, the revenue derived from World Cups is more vital than ever because the market value of inbound tours, even by the “Big Three” nations, is declining.

Pakistan, unable to play bilateral games against India because of politics, are struggling to fetch a fee of much more than about $US10 million for their matches over the next three years, including a visit by England.

For Australia, of course, the ledger is flipped. The rich deals signed with Foxtel and Seven for the home market and Star for the Indian market mean the ICC distributions don’t matter anywhere near as much for CA. But an unbudgeted reduction in the size of that pie would make for increasingly famished Test match programs for the countries that Australia sorely need to maintain that bilateral broadcast value.

It is laudable on a theoretical level that Baird, Shah and England's chair Richard Thompson have discussed the introduction of a Test match fund to cover the travel costs and match fees of countries with weaker cricket economies . But then again, the matter of who pays for it leads back to many of the aforementioned problems.

Part of the ICC rights carve-up agreed by Barclay and his chief executive Geoff Allardice was a multimillion-dollar “strategic fund” from which numerous growth projects could be addressed, including the sustainability of Test cricket. But that money, too, was predicated on Star paying full freight, as agreed in 2022.

As Star and ZeeTV wrestle through arbitration about how the latter backed out of sublicencing a portion of the ICC rights and therefore balancing the cost, cricket administrators will be looking very carefully at the fine print of the ICC contract.

While CA successfully warded off a similar fight for a discount by Seven in 2020-21, a battle with Star would come with considerable danger, since it has long been cricket’s most reliable south Asian broadcaster. Fracturing that relationship to preserve the contracted money would risk taking a major player out of the rights market in the medium term – in other words more money now but much less later.

A “blend and extend” compromise with Star would strike a balance between money and partnership, but also leave cricket’s smaller economic powers with some potentially ugly balance sheets.

Baird, then, may be required to follow through on these words in January: “We need to support, retain and grow Test cricket, and we’re going to have to think through our priorities and part of that is how we distribute funding.”

With ICC dollars now in question, Shah and his acolytes in England and Australia have much to do. Unlike Redford’s character, this movie doesn’t end with the taking of power – now it is a case of wielding it wisely.

The Hundred: A 'bigger and better' future lies ahead for the competition, says Eoin Morgan

The fourth edition of The Hundred concluded in a brilliant fashion with a tense finish in the women's final between London Spirit and Welsh Fire and defending champions Oval Invincibles retaining the men's trophy.

The tournament has continued to grow, particularly on the women's side, with seven of the competition's eight venues breaking the record for women's attendance, including a crowd of 22,000 at Lord's for the final.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also announced that 540,000 tickets were sold for this year's competition, with a total of over two million being sold across the four years.

"The hope is that it gets bigger and better and I think that is inevitable," said Sky Sports' Eoin Morgan.

"With private investment that will bring a bigger scale, even better and more consistent players across all eight teams.

"Over the last four years we've watched crowds just streaming. We still have kids queuing round the corner at the end of the game waiting for photos, selfies, autographs.

"We want to see this for longer periods up and down the country, not just in London. There will always be crowds in London but my hope and expectation is that it will get bigger and better."

LONDO SPIRIT REACT TO VICTORY 19/08/24

The ECB has agreed to sell stakes in the eight Hundred teams later this year and, according to the ECB chief executive Richard Gould, private investment will strengthen the position of women's cricket.

The eight hosts of the teams will be given a 51 per cent stake, which they can sell or keep, with the remaining 49 per cent in each team sold by the ECB.

Money raised from selling the 49 per cent stakes in each team will be distributed between the 18 first-class counties, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the recreational game.

According to England seamer Kate Cross, talent across the women's side was distributed more evenly, making the competition more open.

"That was something that the draft intended to do. The Southern Brave and Oval Invincibles were really strong competitors in the tournament and the draft aimed to displace a bit of the talent and move it around," Cross said.

London Spirit vs Welsh Fire in the Hundred final

"That's what happened this summer. There was one point between play-offs and missing out. It goes to show just how close it all was and every game literally mattered.

"The Oval Invincibles have been pretty been pretty dominant in the last four years in some way or another. The women won it the first two years and the men have won the last two. They have created something quite special at The Oval.

"That's what I have loved about The Hundred. It's the affinity that some teams have created now. When it started, there was some people not being that positive about it, but what it's shown now is that people are going to watch."

The game went down to the wire in the women's final as London Spirit edged Welsh Fire by four wickets to claim their first Hundred trophy after Deepti Sharma smashed a six off the penultimate ball of the final set.

presentation of cricket games

"There were so many times in the women's game where I thought the game was over but it still went down to the last ball of the final five and it felt like you were never out the game," said former England seamer Stuart Broad.

"In the women's game, it's been very tight and created pressure and a lot of tension. The atmospheres around the grounds have also been lifted. It was awesome. It was a real spectacle.

"The game was on the line and it was knockout cricket. I think it had a real international feel to it."

The exciting finals at Lord's were a testament not only to how The Hundred has expanded over the last four years but also the growth of the women's game, and with private investment on the cards in the near future, the tournament will be getting "bigger and better."
