'Jarugandi' review: This action drama starring Jai is let down by poor writing
Jarugandi directed by AN Pitchumani stars Jai, Daniel Annie Pope and Reba Monica John in the lead. The film is Pitchumani’s directorial debut and has been produced by Badri Kasthuri and actor Nithin Sathya who was seen in films like Chennai 28, Vasool Raja MBBS, etc.
Jarugandi, an unusual choice of name for this Tamil film, is an action-comedy drama. The film is off to a shaky start with inadequate character establishment. Jai plays Sathya a smart, young “lower-middle class” man with a knack for stealing cars. The film begins with Jai’s voiceover explaining how lower-middle class people have it hard in the society. How he overcomes life’s challenges to make it big forms the rest of the story.
Daniel plays Paari, Jai’s friend who helps him make a quick buck with the help of a fraudster. The film’s plotline lacks a proper story. It travels all over the place with too many characters introduced during its first half. If you’re able to sit through this portion, then you might be able to get through its second half which feels a tad bit better.
Jarugandi like the meaning of its name (move on), feels very rushed. The first half especially makes little sense with too many knots that seem unnecessary.
Sathya and Paari get muddled up in a trafficking plot that involves the film’s heroine, Keerthy (played by Reba Monica). Robo Shankar plays Gajendra whose character was primarily written to elicit a few laughs, which it barely manages.
The songs in the film do not blend in so well. There’s also the cliched travel montage song. The comedy in this action-comedy drama is very feebly done. The gender queer bartender has been written solely for crass jokes and double-meaning lines, and it is high time Tamil movies stopped writing such characters.
Cinematography in this film might make you feel like you’re watching a television soap. The action blocks, however, have been done well.
The film leaves no moment for you to connect with its characters. You do not empathise with their problems mainly because all of it seems superficially done. Poor writing is its undoing.
Thankfully there are no deliberately done duets or drunk dancing songs. Jarugandi’ s villains are not smart enough either. The film’s dialogues too lack imagination. Jarugandi is a film you can actually skip.

'Jarugandi' review: A taxing comedy of errors
A film that meanders with little purpose.
Updated - October 26, 2018 06:51 pm IST
A still from the movie “Jarugandi”.
Jai is certainly not the best of performers in our cinema, but he does have a certain helplessness in his look and demeanour that still fetches him roles. In Jarugandi , he is cast as Sathya, an ordinary lower middle-class youngster who desperately wants to come up in life. He’s an expert in breaking open cars and scooting away with them, but that isn’t going to get him too far. In order to earn more money and, as they say, “settle in life”, he borrows a loan from an unscrupulous money lender that lends him in all sorts of trouble.
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Jai, Reba, Robo Shankar, Daniel Pope, Ilavarasu
- Storyline: A middle class youngster wants to make quick money and lands in a mess
The attempt in Jarugandi is to make a Kalakappu -like comedy of errors but it ends up falling flat. That’s because director Pichumani takes on too many things; he wants to tell us about an interesting bank loan scam that takes place, but has to quickly move on to the laughs. And so, we have to sit through a love track between Robo Shankar and (yes, you read that right) and supposedly-menacing villains whose agenda we have no clue about.
Things get more taxing than engaging in the second half as the film veers into some needless romance and song-and-dance. There are more unwarranted sequences, which includes a fight at a hospital. And the heroine (Reba Monica John) wails: “ Enna suthi enna nadakarthunu terila ” (“I don’t know what’s happening around me”). Staring at the big screen, we’re tempted to say the same.
The comedy works only in a few places, largely thanks to Paari (Daniel Pope). It’s a typical hero’s friend role, but Daniel has you grinning with his over-the-top expressions and funny T-shirts. In a largely-aimless film, those are among the minor things that manage to keep you amused.

Jarugandi Review: A film that lacks the sense of urgency its title has
Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).
It looks like certain tropes of Tamil cinema are still held on to dearly by filmmakers. One of the lead characters will be an orphan who is raised by a trust, while another is put into a situation which will make them do life-changing things only to come back unscathed, and then there's the template friend character who puts himself in harm's way for the hero. Jai -starrer Jarugandi has all of this, and this predictability is one the major issues with the film. Cast: Jai, Reba Monica John, Daniel Annie Pope, Robo Shankar Director: Pitchumani
Sathya (Jai), is the typical Kollywood protagonist -- a middle-class guy with a family to take care of, who wants to achieve something big and needs money for it. Thanks to his best friend Paari's (Daniel Annie Pope) contacts, Sathya forges documents to get a loan a la Irumbu Thirai . If Tamil cinema has taught us anything, it's that you cannot get away with something wrong -- unless you're the hero, in which case there will be repercussions but they will be 'taken care of'. One of these repercussions lead the men to Keerthy ( Reba Monica John in her Tamil debut) and the cat-and-mouse game that follows, fills up the rest of the runtime.
What's disquieting about Jarugandi is the fact that the line between right and wrong is extremely blurred. There isn't a single scene wherein the main characters repent going against the law, but the audience are forced to root for them anyway because they're left with two sides that can only be defined as bad and worse. Situations make Sathya and Paari extort money from Gajendra (Robo Shankar) and when that doesn't go per plan, they turn to kidnapping. The journey of Sathya from a young man who wants to make an honest living to becoming a wrongdoer is rather unconvincing.
As far as the performances are concerned, Jai sports an uninterested look throughout the film, mirroring our feelings as an audience. While this is meant to be a thrilling entertainer, the flow of events doesn't really put the protagonist in a tough spot and even when it almost does, the lack of emoting from Jai ruins it. Thankfully, Reba Monica does a decent job, despite her limited role, and doesn't simply end up as a damsel-in-distress.
Robo Shankar and Daniel Annie Pope, who are in charge of the humour department, don't bring much to the party. That said, some of their one-liners do evoke laughter. For instance, in an interrogation scene, the interrogatee tries to gain the upper hand by saying, ' kuruka kuruka pesuna, na mothalenthu aramipen ' to which Robo Shankar says, ' ennake va ' in a reference to his Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran comedy routine.
Despite an interesting premise, the screenplay of Jarugandi doesn't really do justice to the story. For a thriller, the film doesn't really have any nail-biting moments. The stakes never feel real and so the excitement of seeing the protagonists save the day is just not there. And let's not even talk about the antagonists of the film. It's those behind the camera that salvage Jarugandi to some extent at least. RD Rajasekhar's cinematography adds a sense of urgency that is missing in the screenplay. And while his songs are not particularly impressive, Bobo Shashi's background score elevates the quality of the film.
On the whole, Jarugandi is a mediocre film which can't be saved by the rare smile-worthy scene it gives us here and there.

Jai delivers an illogical thriller
If Pichumani had concentrated more on incorporating some interesting sequences, Jarugandi could have been more engaging. Director Pichumani's Jarugandi starring Jai and Reba Monica John is a commercial thriller with illogical sequences, says our review. (more)

A better screenplay, with gripping characters and thrilling moments, would have made the movie more interesting.
With a wafer-thin plot, which is developed through a slew of characters, Jarugandi has some engaging moments, but that isn't enough to hold your attention completely. We hardly empathise with the troubles that the characters face. The lead pair, Jai and Reba, play their part well, and so does Daniel... (more)
