PhD (Analytical Biochemistry) - Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre

Opportunities are available to suitably qualified graduates to carry out research in analytical biochemistry which involves different fields of study, such as food biochemistry, environmental biochemistry, proteomics, genomics, lipidomics, glycomics, metabolomics, environmental toxicology, forensic toxicology and biochemical analysis. Transdisciplinary research is encouraged within the centre and with other schools within the university. There are also opportunities to be involved in research projects which are carried out in collaboration with other universities, institutions, industry and community in Malaysia, as well as abroad.

The Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre offers the degrees of MSc and PhD by research in the following fields of specialization:

Expertises available in research centre are as follows:  ABrC Organizational Chart

Applicants should possess one of the following:

A. Master's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, biomedical or other related fields

  • A Master's degree in research mode; or
  • A Master’s degree with CGPA 3.00/4; or
  • A Master’s degree with CGPA 2.50-2.99/4 with additional requirements; or

B. Bachelor’s degree  in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, biomedical or other related fields  with minimum CGPA 3.67/4 (fast-track to PhD)

(Applicable for International Applicants Only)

The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

  • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
  • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
  • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 154; or
  • A minimum score of 47 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
  • A minimum of Band 107 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
  • A minimum of Band 3.5 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Exemption is given to candidate if:

  • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
  • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
  • Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
  • Part-time: Min 6 semesters / Max 15 semesters

A high-dimensional microfluidic approach for selection of aptamers with programmable binding affinities

Generating aptamers for use as affinity reagents in analytical applications is important, but SELEX, the standard method for aptamer generation, is unable to select for pre-defined binding affinities. Now, by combining efficient particle display, high-performance microfluidic sorting and high-content bioinformatics, the method ‘Pro-SELEX’ can afford the quantitative generation of aptamers with programmable binding affinities.

Detection of Intermolecular Interactions Based on Surface Plasmon Resonance Registration

Methods for registration of intermolecular interactions based on the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) have become one of the most efficient tools to solve fundamental and applied problems of analytical biochemistry. Nevertheless, capabilities of these methods are often insufficient to detect low concentrations of analytes or to screen large numbers of objects. That is why considerable efforts are directed at enhancing the sensitivity and efficiency of SPR-based measurements. This review describes the basic principles of the detection of intermolecular interactions using this method, provides a comparison of various types of SPR detectors, and classifies modern approaches to enhance sensitivity and efficiency of measurements.
